Sprint starts rolling out Marshmallow update for the Galaxy S5 Sport and Galaxy Note Edge

Following a successful rollout for the Galaxy S6 edge+ and Galaxy Note 4 last month, Sprint has today started distributing the long-awaited Marshmallow update to all its carrier-branded variants of the Galaxy S5 Sport and Galaxy Note Edge located in the United States.

As you’d expect, the upgrade transports the latest build of Android 6.0.1 to the handsets, together with the contents of this month’s security patch, which is great news for those who’ve been complaining that their devices have been left out of Samsung’s monthly maintenance releases.

It’s important to bear in mind, however, that due to the sheer size of the update, Sprint is unable to push the OTA to all units at once — so it has no other option than to roll it out in stages. The operator hopes to have the firmware available to download on all its models of the Galaxy Note Edge by May 2 and Galaxy S5 Sport by May 11.

To see if the upgrade is ready for your phone, simply head into Settings, followed by About Device, locate and select Software Update, then hit the Update Now button.

Galaxy C7 (SM-C7000) benchmarks leak with Snapdragon 625 and 4GB of RAM

We just received word some weeks ago about Samsung’s new, metal unibody Galaxy C series that the Korean giant has in the works for China (though not exclusively so). The Galaxy C5 has leaked in benchmarks, and now, it’s the Galaxy C7′s turn. The Galaxy C7, bearing model number SM-C7000 (the C5 bears the model number SM-C5000) has been spotted in Geekbench, featuring the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor and 4GB of RAM. The device seems to be somewhat more powerful than the Galaxy C5, which features the Snapdragon 617 SoC, as opposed to the Galaxy C7′s Snapdragon 625.

The Galaxy C7, as is the case with the Galaxy C5, will sport a metal unibody quite similar to the Galaxy A series, bringing a build quality to the series that some seem to never get enough of. The 4GB of RAM is a generous offer for the device, and Samsung’s generosity with RAM may be one feature that improves the multitasking experience on what may become a popular series in China. Both the C5 and the C7 will run Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow out of the box. Marshmallow will bring the popular Doze Mode feature to both of Samsung’s newest devices, which may improve battery life for both handsets as opposed to pre-Doze Android. Samsung has tailored its Power Saving Mode in Marshmallow to match that of Google’s battery saver mode, so expect to see more Google influence in Samsung’s TouchWiz going forward.

Geekbench doesn’t offer us much information here, but fortunately, Antutu leaked its Galaxy C7 benchmarks earlier this week: alongside the 4GB of RAM and Snapdragon 625, the C7 will also feature 32GB of storage, 8MP front camera, 16MP back camera, and the Adreno 506 GPU. As with the Galaxy A7 and the Galaxy A5, the Galaxy C7 will be the superior of these two devices and could offer a 5.5-inch, Full HD (1920 x 1080p) display as opposed to the 5.2-inch display of the Galaxy C5.

Possible European release date and adjusted pricing for Gear 360 surface

When Samsung introduced the Gear 360 camera, it mentioned a release in the second quarter of this year, and a European price of €420. Now, a Dutch retailer is providing a more precise shipping date, and Samsung itself seems to have changed its mind about the device’s price tag.

It is the online retailer Bol.com that isn’t shy about announcing a May 22nd shipping date for the Gear 360, which, if correct, could well turn out to be comparable in other European countries. Even more interesting is the fact that Samsung’s Dutch store now lists the device with a €349.99 price tag, which is significantly lower than the €419 originally communicated. And unlike the above-mentioned release date, Samsung has indeed confirmed this price drop.

The Gear 360 sports two 15 megapixel fisheye lenses, enabling it to capture 360-degree 4K UHD video or 30-megapixel photos. Though you can, of course, enjoy these on your phone, it is the Gear VR that is most suited for consumption of content captured with the Gear 360.

So, there we have it. The Gear 360 will be shipping in Europe for €349.99, and though not certain, we wouldn’t be surprised if it does so sometime in late May. We’ll make sure to get our hands on one so we can share our full 360-degree review of the camera.

Galaxy Note 6 should get the same accessories as the Galaxy S7

Every new Samsung flagship is accompanied by a host of accessories. Since the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge, Samsung’s accessories have become more premium and also more useful, with the addition of new options like a keyboard accessory and a fast wireless charger. According to our insiders, Samsung’s current offerings will not change with the Galaxy Note 6, which should come with the same set of accessories as the one for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge.

Samsung sold twice as many smartphones as Apple in Q1 2016

The Galaxy S7 has been lucky for the global smartphone giant Samsung. It managed to sell more than 10 million Galaxy S7 units last month. Not only did the company receive praise from experts for releasing a refined device, but it also managed to sell twice as many smartphones as Apple in the first quarter of 2016.

According to a new report from research firm TrendForce, Samsung remained the largest brand by extending its lead in the smartphone market share. The South Korean company sold around 81 million smartphones during Q1, 2016 to capture a market share of 27.8 percent. Its global rival Apple sold around 42 million handsets during the same quarter to achieve a market share of 14.4 percent.

Samsung’s market share in the global smartphone market increased 5.7 percent when compared to the first quarter of 2015 and 2.5 percent when compared to Q4, 2015. Huawei (9.3%), Lenovo (5.8%), Xiaomi (5.5%), and LG (5.1%) stood third, fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively in the global smartphone market.

The difference between market shares of Samsung and Apple was as low as 1.2 percent during the fourth quarter of last year but increased to a whopping 13 percent during the first quarter of this year. The Galaxy S7 and S7 edge were unveiled in February and launched in March. Market analysts said that Samsung made a remarkable achievement amid the slowdown in the global smartphone shipments.

Samsung Z3 gets a discount in India

Samsung launched the Tizen-powered Z3 in India back in October last year. At launch, the handset was priced at ₹8,490 but it appears that only five months after launch several retailers are selling the handset at a discount. Online price comparison site MySmartPrice lists the Samsung Z3 as available for ₹6,900 from three top online retailers in the country: Amazon, Snapdeal, and Flipkart.

Tizen smartphones were never expensive to begin with because the idea was to price them in a range that appeals to people who don’t want to spend too much on a handset or those who are purchasing their very first smartphone. At a discounted price the Samsung Z3 is an ever better deal considering the fact that it’s a decent smartphone even though it doesn’t quite have the applications that one gets on an Android device.
