PSA: Your Galaxy S7 display might default to Full HD resolution after the Nougat update

One of the best new features that were introduced on the Galaxy Note 7 was a new power saving mode that let the user change to a lower screen resolution in order to increase battery life. This feature is now available on Nougat on the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, but as we found out after manually updating one of our devices, the screen resolution could default to Full HD on its own after the update has been installed.

There’s nothing to worry about: you can switch back to Quad HD resolution from the Settings » Display menu. The setting sticks after a reboot, so it’s more like a minor annoyance than a permanent bug. Of course, some folks might not even notice the resolution has been lowered as the screen remains plenty sharp even at Full HD, but there’s no point in using such a beautiful display at a lower-than-intended resolution, right?

Here’s a list of all the Galaxy devices that should receive the Nougat update

Now that Samsung’s finally started distributing the long-awaited Nougat update for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, many owners of the firm’s other handsets have started to question whether their unit will be graced with the latest flavor of Android. To clear up the confusion, we’ve decided to compile a list of all the Galaxy-branded devices that will be bumped up to Android 7.0.

Check it out below:

  • Galaxy A3
  • Galaxy A5
  • Galaxy A7
  • Galaxy A8
  • Galaxy A9/A9 Pro
  • Galaxy A3 (2016)
  • Galaxy A5 (2016)
  • Galaxy A7 (2016)
  • Galaxy S6
  • Galaxy S6 Active
  • Galaxy S6 edge
  • Galaxy S6 edge+
  • Galaxy S7
  • Galaxy S7 edge
  • Galaxy S7 Active
  • Galaxy Note 5
  • Galaxy Tab S2

We also expect the Galaxy J5 (2016) and Galaxy J7 (2016) to receive the Nougat treatment as its predecessors made the jump from Lollipop to Marshmallow in a relatively timely manner, though that’s not confirmed at present. The Galaxy Tab A tablets should be on the list as well, according to our sources. Unfortunately, it’s unknown whether Samsung will provide the upgrade for cheaper devices, like the Galaxy J3, as there may not be enough demand. Only time will tell.

With regards to carrier-branded smartphones, all of the major operators in the United States should roll out the firmware for handsets in the Galaxy A, Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series. However, an exact time frame remains unknown. Some of them might start pushing it out around the same time it starts arriving on international units, while some might take a few extra week — and we can only wait and see what happens.

Galaxy S8 launch date might be March 29

There have been a lot of reports these days about the Galaxy S8 launch date. Samsung hasn’t confirmed anything yet at this point in time but reports suggest that while it’s only going to unveil the device to select partners at Mobile World Congress 2017 in Barcelona next month, it will not unveil it to the public. Word on the street is that the Galaxy S8 launch date is likely to be March 29.

We’ve previously heard that the Galaxy S8 will be launched on April 15 so nothing is known for sure right now. The latest report also mentions that the Galaxy S8 will be released in the fourth week of April with prices starting from 849 euro.

As always, take this information with a grain of salt for now since Samsung is yet to confirm anything about the pricing and availability details of its next flagship smartphone. The company hasn’t even confirmed when the event will take place but at least all recent reports seem to agree that it won’t be showing off the device to the public at MWC 2017 next month.

New leaked Galaxy S8 cases hint at a familiar design

We’ve seen a slew of purported Galaxy S8 cases being leaked online over the past week giving us what might be our first glimpse at the design of Samsung’s upcoming flagship. We’ve received a handful of images that show cases for the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus from a different manufacturer. A couple of design elements are now being seen consistently in cases from three different manufacturers.

These cases appear to have the relevant cutouts for a USB Type-C port, a microphone and the standard 3.5mm headphone jack at the bottom. This is interesting given that the Galaxy S8 is widely believed to ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack. All of these leaked cases have the rear flash placed above the camera so it just might be how Samsung is going to place these components this time around.

Make what you will of these leaked cases, it obviously goes without saying that they don’t necessarily confirm anything about the Galaxy S8′s design. Samsung is expected to officially unveil the Galaxy S8 in April.

While stock lasts, you can pick up a 65-inch Samsung-branded 4K SUHD Smart LED TV for $1,697.99 (39% off). Samsung starts rolling out January security patch for the Galaxy Note 4 in Germany

Samsung has today started rolling out this month’s security patch for the factory unlocked variant of the Galaxy Note 4 in Germany. Typically, after an upgrade starts making the rounds in the region, it heads to the Netherlands, followed by Poland and then the United Kingdom.

As outlined in the changelog that was posted on the firm’s Security Blog a little more than two weeks ago, the update addresses a total of 67 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) in the Android OS and an additional 28 patches for its latest smartphones.

Like usual, this release is being pushed out in stages. To see if the OTA is ready for your device, simply head into Settings » About Device » Download Updates Manually. Alternatively, you can always wait until you receive a notification prompting you to install the upgrade.

Samsung launches the Galaxy C9 Pro in India, preorders start from January 27

We had reported last week that Samsung is planning to launch the Galaxy C9 Pro in India on January 18, but the company has launched it a day earlier. Regular Nougat rollout begins for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge in China and the UK

It seems Samsung is sticking to its recent promise of rolling out the Nougat update on January 17th, as owners of the Galaxy S7 edge (and likely the Galaxy S7) in China and the UK are seeing a 1.2GB update on their handsets. The news comes from XDA, and it looks like the regular rollout for non-beta users has now begun. The January 17th estimate was given for the European market, so it’s possible that Samsung will be making the update globally available in a matter of days.

For those who participated in the beta program, the final update doesn’t bring anything new, but for everyone else there are a lot of new features in Android 7.0 Nougat. Have you received the update on your S7 or S7 edge? Do let us know if you have, and whether you see something new or different that we might not already be aware of.

Yet another exploit found on the Samsung Smartcam HD Plus

Samsung’s SmartCam HD Plus security camera hasn’t exactly been off to a flyer since its launch in late 2015. This security camera has been found to be vulnerable to remote hacking in the past. Now, the folks at Exploitee.rs have managed to sneak into the Smartcam yet again, gaining root access to the camera. This is achieved by pushing a firmware update with the malicious file to the camera’s iWatch web cam monitoring service.

Previously, hackers were able to change the admin password on the Smartcam without actually knowing the original password. Knowing that this was a major security concern, Samsung was quick to remove the local web interface of the Smartcam. However, leaving the server wide open meant that hackers could still make their way into the system, allowing for more exploits to be uncovered.

Exploitee.rs has posted its findings online for the world to see. One can only hope that Samsung takes necessary action so as to not cause further worries for the customers.
