Samsung targets field workers with the rugged Galaxy S7 Active

Samsung unveiled its ultra-rugged smartphone, the Galaxy S7 Active, which features a shatter-resistant display, water-resistant and dust-resistant body, and MIL STD-810G certification. Naturally, Samsung is targeting this smartphone towards industries with field service workers who need a rugged device on a day-to-day basis.

Chris Briglin, director of product marketing at Samsung Business, said that there’s an audience for the Galaxy S7 Active for sure. “The key industries in the U.S. for the Galaxy S7 Active are manufacturing, logistics, field services, and government,” said Briglin. Samsung is expanding its footprint in the enterprise market by bundling its KNOX security solution, which has been named as the strongest mobile security platform. The Galaxy S7 Active will reach enterprises through BYOD plans.

According to the company, the Galaxy S7 Active competes with durable voice-only feature phones, which are being used by service technicians and sales engineers in the field. The South Korean smartphone giant is already working with firms like Tri-State Compressed Air Systems as a customer to provide a smartphone that can take a beating.

The Galaxy S7 Active features specifications broadly similar to the Galaxy S7 but comes with a tougher build and a larger 4,000 mAh battery. Unlike its predecessor, the Galaxy S7 Active now comes with a fingerprint sensor integrated into its home button and Samsung Pay for easy mobile payments.

You may want to think twice before updating your Galaxy smartphone for now

Multiple reports are coming in concerning the Galaxy S7, the Galaxy S6, the Galaxy Note 5 and even the Galaxy Note 4. It appears people who are updating their devices to Marshmallow for the first time just now are facing an issue related to passwords and fingerprints, in that once the update is installed neither the password nor the fingerprint is being accepted. It doesn’t appear to be affecting all users so you may or may not have experienced this, but it appears to be widespread enough to generate some buzz online.

The easiest way to ensure that this doesn’t affect you is to remove the password and fingerprint login before installing the update. If you are locked out and your device isn’t accepting your password just go over to findmymobile.samsung.com, lock and then unlock your phone. You do need to have a Samsung account associated with your device if this method is to work, if you don’t have a Samsung account and have been locked out then you’ll probably have to take up your case with Samsung customer support.

It’s believed that this issue might be partly caused by encryption being turned on by default in handsets with a certain level of specifications. Unless the feature is turned off, users have to enter a pattern unlock, password, or pin code every time the device is booted up. It’s this feature that’s apparently distorted stored passwords and fingerprints, thus locking users out. There have been reports of this issue appearing on Android handsets from other manufacturers as well, which won’t be surprising since it has more to do with the Android update and less with how Samsung implements device unlocks in its handsets.

Samsung hasn’t commented on the matter yet. We’ll keep an ear to the ground and update you when there’s more information about this issue.

AT&T launches the Galaxy S7 Active, available June 10

We have known for some time now that the Galaxy S7 Active is going to be launched soon and today AT&T has finally made the official announcement. The Galaxy S7 Active has been launched and it will be available for purchase starting June 10. Since this smartphone was one of Samsung’s worst kept secrets, the announcement doesn’t really reveal anything that we don’t already know about the Galaxy S7 Active.

The Galaxy S7 Active features a 5.1-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display, a Snapdragon 820 processor with 4GB RAM, 12-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front camera, 32GB internal storage, microSD card support, and a positively massive 4,000mAh battery. However, that’s not what sets this handset apart from the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge. It actually features a “shatter resistant” display and touts MIL STD-810G certification, meaning that it’s more than capable of holding its own against bumps and drops. Another big difference is that this handset has three physical buttons at the bottom instead of a mixture of physical and capacitive buttons you find on the Galaxy S7. It happens to be the first Active device from Samsung to have a fingerprint sensor and thus support for Samsung Pay.

Like previous Active handsets, it’s exclusive to AT&T in the United States. Customers can purchase it from the carrier for $26.50 per month on the 30-month AT&T Next plan, or for $33.31 per month on the 24-month plan, starting June 10, in Sandy Gold, Titanium Grey, and Camo Green colors. It will be eligible for AT&T’s BOGO offer at launch.

Here’s the most interesting Samsung news from last week

Samsung was an extremely busy bee last week. Not only did it introduce us to two new fitness-orientated wearables, the Gear Fit 2 and Gear IconX, but it also launched its mobile payment platform in Spain. Understandably, not all Samsung fanatics have the time to keep up to date with all the news that breaks in a week, because, let’s face it, there’s an awful lot. Thankfully, we’re on hand to help, though, as we’ve created a magazine consisting of all the top stories we reported over the course of the past seven days.

Import data shows that the Galaxy On7 (2016) is in the pipeline

Samsung released its new budget Galaxy On lineup of smartphones late last year. The Galaxy On5 and the Galaxy On7 were released in India only and in our review, we concluded that the only reason why customers would truly want to buy these budget handsets would be because of Samsung’s brand value and after-sales support. Perhaps the successor will make us believe otherwise.

Latest data from import tracker Zauba shows that bits and pieces for the SM-G10F have been imported into India for testing and evaluation. It’s quite likely that this model number corresponds to the Galaxy On7 (2016) as the original On7‘s model number is SM-G100F. The data reveals that it’s going to have dual-SIM support like its predecessor, as well as a 13-megapixel rear and 8-megapixel front camera. A Full HD LCD display is also mentioned in the list but the size is unknown at this point in time. It may take a while before Samsung comes out with this handset so be prepared to wait for a couple of months.

Samsung announces the Galaxy J3 Pro in China

Samsung has today taken the wraps of the latest addition to its rapidly-growing Galaxy J lineup in China. We first heard about this handset, which carries the moniker Galaxy J3 Pro, five days ago when it appeared in a batch of leaked press renders showcasing its design, and we quickly came to the conclusion that it’s a slightly beefier model of the entry-level Galaxy J3. The device will be available to purchase in either Gold or Gray when it launches in the region later this month through China Telecom for just 990 Yuan ($150). Unfortunately, a specific launch date has not been provided as of yet.

Enclosed in the Galaxy J3 Pro‘s aluminium casing is a 5-inch 720p Super AMOLED display, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable internal storage, a 1.2GHz Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor, an Adreno 306 GPU, an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with a f/2.0 aperture, a 5-megapixel selfie snapper, dual-SIM compatibility and a 2,650mAh battery, which should last for around a day of intermediate use. The handset will run the latest build of Android 5.1.1 Lollipop out of the box skinned with Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface, but is expected to receive the Marshmallow upgrade over the course of the next few months.
