Samsung’s E5 LTPO OLED display panel tops performance charts

It was revealed earlier this month that Samsung has developed a new OLED panel, and it will be used on the iQOO 8 series smartphone. Yesterday, the iQOO 8 and the iQOO 8 Pro were launched in China. The display analysis of the iQOO 8 Pro published by DisplayMate reveals that its performance is the best in the industry.

The 6.8-inch LTPO OLED panel used in the iQOO 8 Pro has QHD+ resolution (3,200 x 1,440 pixels), a 20:9 aspect ratio, up to 120Hz variable refresh rate, HDR10, and Dolby Vision. The display scored an A+ mark on DisplayMate’s test and received the DisplayMate Best Smartphone Display Award. It matched or topped 14 different tests, including the ones related to brightness, color accuracy, DCI-P3 and sRGB color gamut coverage, and screen reflectance.

The tests revealed that Samsung Display’s E5 OLED panel has excellent color reproduction, coverage of 112% DCI-P3 and 140% sRGB color spaces, full-screen peak brightness of 980 nits, and low-APL brightness of 1,508 nits. The E5 display also showcased the lowest screen reflectance ever tested by DisplayMate. Seven out of the fourteen performance records of this new OLED panel were rated “visually indistinguishable from perfect.

It uses the same Diamond Pixel arrangement used in the Galaxy Z Fold 3’s Eco OLED display. Apart from improved performance, the new display panel also consumes lower power.

The iQOO 8 Pro features a 6.8-inch QHD+ LTPO OLED panel with a 120Hz variable refresh rate, a 50MP OIS+48MP+13MP triple-camera setup on the rear, a 16MP selfie camera, a Snapdragon 888+ processor, 8GB/12GB RAM, 256GB/512GB internal storage, Android 11-based Origin OS, ultrasonic in-display fingerprint reader, a 4,500mAh battery, 120W fast wired charging, 50W fast wireless charging, and 10W reverse wireless charging.

Chinese OLEDs could be coming to more Samsung smartphones

Samsung Display is the leading supplier of mobile OLED panels in the world. Samsung Electronics sources the panels it needs for smartphones from its sister company. However, recent reports have suggested that the company could start buying OLED panels from Chinese companies as well.

A new report highlights the possibility of another major Chinese display supplier joining Samsung’s OLED supply chain. That might result in more Samsung smartphones using Chinese OLED panels.

More Samsung phones could use Chinese OLED panels

Samsung’s decision to use Chinese OLED panels is linked to its desire of increasing competitiveness in the entry-level smartphone segment. The Chinese OLED panels will cost less than those from Samsung Display.

This will enable the company to bring OLED panels to more devices while remaining competitive on price. The upcoming Galaxy M phones might be one of the first to utilize OLED panels from Chinese display manufacturer BOE.

A new report out of China claims that TCL will now be supplying OLED panels to Samsung Electronics as well. Both companies already have a close relationship. Samsung sold its LCD production line in Suzhou to TCL last year and also acquired a stake in the company. TCL already meets over 15% of Samsung’s LCD panel requirements for smart TVs.

This relationship is now expected to deepen further with Samsung sourcing OLED panels for smartphones from TCL. It’s unclear which devices these panels might be used for. Could Samsung switch some of its mid-range devices to Chinese panels as well?

That could remain a possibility. However, the company is unlikely to do that for its high-end smartphones.

Samsung will soon stop showing ads in its stock apps

Last year, Samsung started to show ads and promotions in some of its stock apps like Samsung Music, Samsung Pay, and Samsung Weather. Galaxy smartphone and tablet users were pretty outraged over this move and questioned whether they should continue buying products from Samsung. Now, it is being reported that those ads might go away soon.

It is being reported that TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics, mentioned during the company’s online town hall meeting that ads will soon go away from Samsung’s stock apps. An employee-only online meeting was conducted earlier today at Samsung, and one of the employees asked TM Roh why the company’s stock apps contain ads. TM Roh replied saying that the ads will go away in future builds of Samsung Pay, Samsung Weather, and more. He also mentioned that Samsung listens to the voices of employees and users.

This is definitely a good move from Samsung. Combined with its longer software update policy and frequent security updates, the removal of ads will help the South Korean firm from distinguishing itself from most other Chinese smartphone brands like Xiaomi that have been eating Samsung’s business. Almost all smartphones from Chinese brands show push notifications and ads in their stock apps.

Dog photos are stopping me from jumping to Samsung’s foldables

Samsung’s foldable phones have come a long way in a short span of time. It was only two years ago that the Galaxy Fold hit the market, and while its launch was anything but smooth, Samsung turned the ship around quickly and brought numerous refinements with the Galaxy Fold’s successor. It also launched the Galaxy Z Flip, which captured the attention of millions thanks to its compact form factor and stylish design.

And now, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 are here, and both are amazing devices in their own right. The Galaxy Z Fold 3 is especially interesting thanks to a laundry list of fancy features, including water resistance, an under-display camera, and S Pen support. Unfortunately, it doesn’t bring any improvements to the rear camera setup compared to the Galaxy Fold or Galaxy Z Fold 2, and as I’ve opined before, the lack of a modern zoom solution on Samsung’s foldables is a massive disadvantage.

However, I recently began to wonder if I really need a zoom camera and if I can’t just forget about one and make the switch to Samsung’s foldables. For a second I thought I could. Thanks to the never-ending pandemic, I’m not really stepping out of the house all that much, so I’m not getting too many chances to do anything remotely resembling serious photography.

In fact, there’s only one reason I really need a high-quality zoom camera for. Sadly, it’s quite an important one: I need it to take pictures of my dog.

Dog doing cute things? Whip out your camera and zoom before the moment’s lost

Anyone who owns a dog knows how important it is to capture all those cute things they do before the moment passes. And having access to a good zoom camera is essential for doing so, because often times they’ll stop doing what they’re doing when they see you moving closer. With a proper zoom camera, you can snap a picture from far away, and it’s an area in which Samsung’s foldables fall behind.

With the Galaxy Z Fold lineup, you’re stuck with 2x optical zoom, and the Galaxy Z Flip lineup only offers digital magnification as it lacks a telephoto camera. And that’s just sad, because I loved both the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and the Galaxy Z Flip when I got to test them out. The Galaxy Z Flip, in particular, had me captivated, despite its longer list of shortcomings (many of which have been fixed with the Galaxy Z Flip 3, like a high refresh rate display and stereo speakers).

Below are just a few photos of my dog that I captured with my Galaxy S20 Ultra. With a Galaxy Z Fold 2/3 or Galaxy Z Flip/Z Flip 2, these would come out extremely pixelated.

Seriously, if it weren’t for my dog, I’d pre-order the Galaxy Z Flip 3 right now, especially since its stylish design is matched with a surprisingly attractive price tag here in India. But it seems I need to wait another year or two before Samsung’s foldables start making sense for those who want high-end zoom capabilities on their phones. Or even just close to high-end, like a 3x telephoto camera instead of a 10x module, as we see on phones like the Galaxy S20 FE and even the mid-range Galaxy A72.

Galaxy S22+ might bring a serious battery downgrade

The Galaxy S21 lineup is very well equipped when it comes to batteries. The base Galaxy S21’s 4,000 mAh battery might not be anything special, but the 4,800 mAh and 5,000 mAh batteries on the Galaxy S21+ and Galaxy S21 Ultra do a great job at providing dependable battery life even with all fancy features (like 120Hz refresh rate) enabled.

But it seems Samsung may not be able to stick the same batteries in the Galaxy S22 series next year, or at least in the Galaxy S22+. According to our friends over at GalaxyClub, the Galaxy S22+ will feature a battery with a typical capacity of 4,500 mAh and a rated capacity of 4,370 mAh.

If this information turns out to be accurate, it would mean the Galaxy S22+ will have the same battery capacity as the Galaxy S20+. Will the other models get a similar downgrade? That remains to be seen, though a rumor from earlier this week suggested that we could see a 5,000 mAh cell on the Galaxy S22 Ultra, similar to the Galaxy S20 Ultra and Galaxy S21 Ultra.

Of course, a smaller battery doesn’t necessarily have to mean poorer endurance. Advancements in the latest silicon and Samsung’s display technology could help make up for the reduction in battery size. Still, you can’t beat physics when it comes to battery capacity, so this is certainly a worrying bit of detail about Samsung’s next flagship lineup.
