Galaxy Note 10 Lite support pages appear as device gets FCC approval

The Galaxy Note 10 Lite has taken a couple of steps closer to an official launch. Support pages for the upcoming Galaxy Note 10 spin-off have been listed on Samsung’s official website in Spain and a few other countries, and the device has also been certified by the FCC. Rumors peg the Galaxy Note 10 Lite’s launch in January, at least in India, and it seems everything is progressing according to Samsung’s plans.

Neither the support pages nor the FCC certification reveal anything new about the phone. However, we can look to other sources for details on what the Galaxy Note 10 Lite will have to offer. For example, Bluetooth certification revealed that the Note 10 Lite could be the first Samsung phone with Bluetooth 5.1, which can — in theory — enable features like location tracking for the S Pen. Benchmark listings, meanwhile, tell us that the device will be powered by the Exynos 9810 chipset, the one that powered the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 last year.

The Galaxy Note 10 Lite will have a battery that’s bigger than the battery inside the Galaxy Note 10+ – 4,500 mAh cell that should be able to power through a day of moderately intense use despite the 2018 processor under the hood. It will also have a headphone jack, as suggested by leaked renders, and all of this could be offered for a starting price of around €609. That’s considerably lower than the price tag attached to a Galaxy Note 10, which is to be expected given the ‘Lite’ moniker.

Shop APK teardown hints at new ‘Samsung Flex’ subscription service

Samsung might be planning on launching a new subscription service for customers called Samsung Flex. The moniker was found in a couple of strings following an XDA-Developers teardown of the latest Shop app. One string mentions a monthly price indicating that this is a subscription service, while another mentions ‘Premium Care support’ as well as ‘early upgrades.’

Samsung Flex could combine the benefits of Premium Care and Upgrade programs

The APK teardown, or more specifically, the bits of code found within the app, leave a lot of room for interpretation. We know this alleged new service should be called Samsung Flex, and the code is quite obviously hinting at a monthly subscription fee, but it’s unclear exactly how it would work and what benefits it could provide to customers.

Presumably, Samsung Flex could be a variation of both the Premium Care and Upgrade programs combined. Customers would be able to sign up for a monthly subscription service with the possibility of canceling at any time, and they would benefit from Premium Care as well as yearly device upgrades. The ‘early upgrades’ part is a bit more confusing than the rest, as it seems to suggest that Samsung Flex customers might be able to upgrade to newer hardware ahead of non-Flex customers.

Perhaps the choice of words isn’t exactly accurate and this refers to early software updates rather than hardware upgrades. Then again, paying a subscription for the privilege of getting earlier software updates could raise questions as to why Samsung isn’t treating every customer equally. It might benefit some people while turning off others, especially given the increasing number of subscription services one has to keep track of in this age.

All of this is just speculation right now, and keep in mind that bits of code found inside official applications after APK teardowns aren’t always put to use by OEMs and developers. At the very least, the strings confirm that Samsung is entertaining the idea of creating this mysterious Flex program, but as of this writing, there’s no guarantee of how it would work or even if it will be launched at all. But assuming that it will become a real thing, what benefits would you expect from a monthly subscription to a new Samsung service aimed exclusively at customers? Leave a comment below.

Samsung enters Canadian 4G LTE-A and 5G market with Videotron

Samsung Electronics has partnered with Canadian telecommunications provider Videotron to supply the company with 4G LTE-A and 5G network solutions. This new collaboration marks Samsung’s first entry into Canada as a network solutions provider. Beginning early 2020, Videotron customers in Quebec and Ottawa can expect to have access to 4G LTE-A and 5G thanks to Samsung’s network equipment.

Samsung Electronics makes its LTE-A / 5G debut in Canada

There’s been a lot of talks lately about Samsung’s position in the emerging 5G segment and how 2020 might be a decisive year for the company, especially as numerous markets are gearing up to adopt 5G. Samsung and other 5G equipment providers are in a favorable position as the 5G market is poised to flourish next year. One company will emerge victorious over the others, and so far, Samsung seems to be leading the charge.

Huawei might be its biggest rival in the 5G space, but the China-US trade restrictions have limited Huawei’s scope and possibilities of expansion in many markets. Samsung’s entry in Canada is a perfect example of what might happen next year in numerous other countries as they prepare to make the jump to 5G.

Some analysts believe that Huawei’s solutions are cheaper and possibly even more technologically advanced, but its reputation weighs heavily and numerous western countries will likely end up dealing with Samsung instead. Meanwhile, Samsung’s expertise speaks for itself as it is presently the largest 5G network equipment provider in the US and South Korea. We suspect that the company will win this title in many other markets beginning next year.

Galaxy Note 10 Lite to have location-tracking Bluetooth 5.1 S Pen

It is no secret Samsung is getting ready to launch the Galaxy Note 10 Lite, a more affordable version of its top-of-the-line Galaxy Note 10 devices. Now, we learn it will be Samsung’s first Bluetooth 5.1-compatible device, theoretically bringing location tracking to the S Pen.

Galaxy Note 10 Lite with Bluetooth 5.1 S Pen connectivity

A few weeks ago we saw that Samsung already bagged its Bluetooth 5.0 certification for the Galaxy S10 Lite and Note 10 Lite. Now, the latter receives yet another Bluetooth certification, and it is the more interesting one. As usual, the devil is in the details.

The Galaxy Note 10 Lite will be the first Samsung device to support Bluetooth 5.1. In particular, the S Pen will have a Bluetooth 5.1 connection. Now, this is where things get interesting, as the biggest upgrade in Bluetooth 5.1 is accurate location tracking. In other words: the Note 10 Lite just might be the first Note that knows where its S Pen is.

The Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ have an S Pen that recognizes gestures, but when the stylus is not close to the display, the device has no way of knowing its exact location. While gestures do provide a few fun features, we can imagine accurate location tracking creates a whole new dimension of S Pen functionality.

Of course, we do not know if the Note 10 Lite will indeed sport fresh new S Pen features. After all, it is the Lite version of its more expensive brothers. But the Bluetooth 5.1 certification shows that the phone’s hardware is capable of tricks the regular Note 10 models cannot perform.

We will have to wait until Samsung makes the device official to find out what Bluetooth 5.1 support really brings to the Galaxy Note 10 Lite. Recent rumors point to a launch in January. Just last week, we found out the phone could cost just north of €600, making it more affordable than the regular Note 10 models, but still not a very cheap phone with a stylus. However, interesting new features could go a long way to justify such a price point.
