Samsung announces the world’s first lineup of UFS-based microSD cards

Samsung has today taken the wraps off the world’s first Universal Flash Storage (UFS)-based microSD cards, which are available in a wide range of storage capacities, including 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB. Not only are these memory cards fantastic for day-to-day use, but they have also been optimized to deliver an excellent user experience when 3D gaming and watching high-resolution movies. Playback will be faster and smoother than ever thanks the card’s extremely high read speeds (530MB/s), which are more than five times faster than that of a typical microSD chip (95MB/s).

The new UFS cards also obliterate traditional microSD cards when it comes to writing data. Take the 256GB UFS chip as an example. It has a write speed of an eye-watering 170MB/s, which is almost double the rate of a top-end microSD card. These performance statistics come together to produce a significantly reduced: multimedia data downloading time, photo thumbnail loading time and buffer clearing time when shooting burst mode. Unfortunately, the manufacturer failed to provide any information with regards to pricing or availability. However, we expect the smallest storage capacity to set you back something in the region of $50-75.
