Samsung’s foldable smartphone still expected to arrive next year

We exclusively reported that Project Valley is the codename for Samsung’s first dual-screen and possibly its first foldable smartphone nearly two years ago. The company hasn’t said anything about such a device at this point in time but multiple reports have suggested that the handset might arrive in a year or so. Hyundai Securities Kim Dong-won predicts in his latest report that Samsung is going to release its foldable smartphone next year, he also expects LG to follow suit in 2017 as well.

“The year 2017 will be the first year of foldable smartphones for the mass market,” he predicts in the report, adding that once Samsung and LG release their foldable smartphones, it’s likely that global rivals such as Apple and Google will come out with their own foldable smartphones. Samsung Display is predicted to start manufacturing the sixth-generation flexible OLED panels from the second half of 2017 which means that the company’s foldable handset might not arrive until late next year. Korean display manufacturers like Samsung Display and LG display are expected to dominate production of foldable OLED panels over the next three years.

Samsung hasn’t officially confirmed anything as yet about when it’s going to release a foldable smartphone so take this with a grain of salt for now. We’ve been hearing about this device for almost two years now and it’s yet to materialize.
