Samsung SDI showcases new household energy storage systems for the European market

Samsung SDI, Samsung’s storage battery manufacturing unit, recently showcased its energy storage system (ESS) products for industrial use at the Energy Storage Europe 2017 expo. The company will now showcase household ESS products at the Intersolar Europe 2017 tradeshow in Munich on May 31. Its production will start in the second half of 2017, followed by a commercial launch next year.

The company, which usually supplies batteries for smartphones and electric vehicles, is targeting the European household market with its new products. Its new high-capacity, high-energy ESS solutions can be used to collect energy generated by solar panels. Samsung SDI’s new solutions offer 4.8kWh/module, and up to 39 modules can grouped together for one unit, offering a maximum capacity of 188kWh.

Samsung says that an average European home consumers around 10kWh per day. So, the company’s new ESS solution can theoretically power up to 19 homes in a day. Samsung supplies these modules to end product ESS makers who then fit them into neat cases and sell them as finished products. The South Korean battery firm’s modules are claimed to be highly scalable, catering to diverse client needs.

Samsung SDI currently holds around 30 percent share of the household ESS market. The company has been holding the number one position in Japan since 2013, following the Fukushima nuclear disaster. It also supplies modules to Tesla, which is planning to build Gigafactories.
