Galaxy S8 price in South Korea almost double that of the US

A local consumer group is not happy with the Galaxy S8 price in South Korea. It has released a new report today. The report points out that in some cases the price is actually double that of the United States. It mentions that the price of an unlocked Galaxy S8 in Samsung’s home country is far above that of the US.

The Green Consumer Network’s report says that the Galaxy S8 price in South Korea is 1.02 million won or $908 for the unlocked model. It claims that this is higher than the $780 price tag for US customers. The US price also includes tax.

The unlocked Galaxy S8 can be purchased from Samsung’s website in the US for $724.99. The Galaxy S8 costs $824.99. That’s before tax. Customers also get a free Gear VR with Controller with every purchase.

That’s not all. US customers can also get discounts of up to $300 for trading in their existing smartphones. If you take that into account, the Galaxy S8 price in South Korea ends up being almost double compared to the US.

Samsung also provides incentives like the free Gear VR headsets to customers in the US. The Green Consumer Network says these incentives are not provided to customers in South Korea.

It calls on the company to sell unlocked smartphones to the public at the same price they’re supplied to mobile carriers. Whether or not this will ever happen is another matter entirely.
