Samsung loses $120 million appeal in patent lawsuit with Apple

Apple was awarded $120 million in damages in a patent lawsuit against Samsung back in 2014. A US circuit appeals court overturned that verdict in February last year in what was a minor victory for Samsung. Apple took the matter to a different federal appeals court that reinstated Apple’s victory and ruled that Samsung pay $120 million in damages.

Samsung then took the matter to the United States Supreme Court. It’s out of luck and legal options now. The apex court has refused to hear Samsung’s appeal in the case.

Samsung vs Apple

Samsung had appealed the reinstatement of $120 million in damages to the Supreme Court. The highest court in the land has refused to entertain the appeal. That means that last year’s ruling which reinstated the award to Apple now stands.

The patents in this drawn-out legal saga include autocorrect, slide-to-unlock, and quick links. Infringement of the quick links feature accounts for $99 million of the damages alone.

This is a clear win for Apple. Samsung doesn’t have many options left right now but to pay the $120 million.

Samsung did clinch a major victory in another patent dispute with Apple. The Supreme Court sided with Samsung in that one and threw out a $399 million damages award to Apple. The company had claimed that Samsung had copied key iPhone designs.
