Samsung launches Galaxy S10+ Olympic Game Edition

Samsung has launched an Olympic Game Edition of the Galaxy S10+ to celebrate the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. With the event being hosted in Japan, it should come as no surprise to hear that’s also where the exclusive variant of the handset is available — though customers won’t have to wait until 2020 to snag one: it’s on sale right now through local carrier Docomo for $1000.

This isn’t the first time Samsung has released an Olympic Game Edition of a smartphone. First, we had the Galaxy Note Olympic Edition in 2012, followed by the Galaxy Note 3 Olympic Edition in 2014, the Galaxy S7 edge Olympic Edition in 2016 and the Galaxy Note 8 Olympic Edition in 2018. And we should see a lot more, seeing as Samsung’s sponsorship of the event doesn’t end until 2028.

The Galaxy S10+ Olympic Game Edition isn’t all that different to the standard Prism White color variant of the Galaxy S10+ (no, not the Galaxy S10 5G), with the main difference being the inclusion of a Tokyo 2020 emblem on the rear. That same design choice has also been carried over to an Olympic Game Edition set of the Galaxy Buds, which come bundled with the handset.

There’s no word on whether Samsung is planning on bringing the Olympic Game Edition to other markets. That’s not to mean the firm doesn’t have a treat up its sleeve for other countries, however, because it does — in the past it’s launched a series of Olympic-branded applications and services, including one that allowed users to stream content in VR, and it will do the same again in 2020.
