Samsung’s new MLCC removes high-frequency noise from 5G phones

Samsung Electro-Mechanics has developed a new multi-layer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) that’s 18% thinner than the previous solution and features a 3-socket structure designed to reduce high-frequency power noise. Why is this important? Because Samsung’s new MLCC is poised to become ubiquitous and be widely adopted by 5G mobile devices, home appliances, and the automotive industry.

MLCCs are small components designed to control the stable flow of electrical current for consumer electronics and various other products that have integrated circuits. Components have a tendency to become smaller as smart products become smarter and more packed with technologies, and Samsung’s new MLCC solution addresses the need for smaller capacitors in the 5G era.

Capacitors in general can generate noise, even if it’s not in the hearing range of humans, and Samsung claims that its new MLCC solution is not only 18% slimmer but also removes high-frequency noise that can occur from a 5G smartphone’s AP power unit. The MLCC achieves this by adopting a 3-socket design that now includes earth / ground sockets.

Samsung’s new solution is the thinnest among 1209-size 3-socket MLCCs. It measures 1.2 x 0.9 x 0.65mm. The company’s previous MLCC had a 0.8mm width but Samsung was able to decrease the capacitor’s footprint by applying independent thin layer molding technology and [a] superfine dielectric layer.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics is already supplying the global smartphone industry with its new 0.65mm ultra-slim 3-socket MLCC but it hasn’t named any clients in particular. Last year the company revealed its plans to supply MLCCs to the automotive market and has opened up a factory in Tianjin for this purpose.
