Samsung and AMD’s lovefest won’t be exclusive to Galaxy phones

A lot of hype is building around Samsung’s next-generation flagship Exynos processor. And that’s primarily because it will be the first smartphone chipset in recent times to feature an AMD GPU. Everyone is excited to see how well the chipset does when it ships inside a Galaxy smartphone next year. However, the Exynos 2200 might not be limited to just Samsung’s own smartphones.

According to a new rumor floating around on the Chinese microblogging website Weibo, the Exynos 2200 processor could end up inside a high-end smartphone from Vivo. And that’s entirely possible as the Chinese smartphone brand has used flagship Exynos processors in the past in its high-end devices like the Vivo X60 and the Vivo X60 Pro. However, those devices were limited to the Chinese market. International variants of the Vivo X60 and the Vivo X60 Pro used the Snapdragon 870 instead.

It was also rumored that System LSI (Samsung’s arm that designs Exynos SoCs) was in talks with more Chinese smartphone brands, including OPPO and Xiaomi. If Samsung hopes to put its next Exynos processor into more non-Samsung phones, it needs to release a killer chipset that’s not only feature-rich and powerful but also power-efficient.

The Exynos 2200 is expected to feature one ARM Cortex-X2 CPU core, three Cortex-A710 CPU cores, and four Cortex-A510 CPU cores. It will most probably be manufactured by Samsung Foundry using its 5nm fabrication process. The AMD GPU used inside the Exynos 2200 will be based on the company’s latest architecture: RDNA2. AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su had announced that the GPU features advanced technologies such as ray tracing and variable rate shading.
