Galaxy Grand On images and specs leak through TENAA

The Galaxy Grand On has been in and out of the rumor mill quite a few times in recent weeks, and we have had a pretty good idea of its specs thanks to our sources. Images of the actual device have, as expected, managed to stay hidden, but Chinese regulatory authority TENAA has stepped in to help us out in that regard.

TENAA has posted pictures of the Grand On (SM-G550) showing it from all sides, and also listed the entire spec sheet. The device looks rather similar to the Galaxy J2, with the same textured pattern on the back. That is to say it looks rather unappealing, which shouldn’t be surprising as design is one of the first things that gets ignored when Samsung makes a low-cost smartphone.

The specs listed more or less match what we exclusively leaked a couple of months ago – a 5.1-inch 720p display, a dual-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz (this should be an Exynos 3475 chip clocked at 1.3GHz in the final version if our sources are to be believed), 1GB of RAM, an 8 MP rear camera, a 5 MP front camera, LTE connectivity, and 8GB of expandable storage. The phone runs Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, measures 142×71.9×8.5 mm and weighs 140 grams.

The Galaxy Grand On recently got through the FCC, and the certification from TENAA suggests we’re very close to an official announcement. What do you think about the device? Do you think it’s yet another unnecessary smartphone in Samsung’s repertoire, or do you think the Galaxy Grand lineup’s success is a good enough excuse for the Grand On’s existence?
