Samsung Galaxy Note 4 manual download available now

Samsung’s new flagship was unveiled earlier this month at the IFA 2014 show in Berlin and a couple of weeks after that the company confirmed when the device is going to start shipping. Those who have already placed their pre-orders have to wait for a couple of week snow as shipments don’t start until mid-October. Nevertheless it is now possible to download Samsung Galaxy Note 4 manual.

The English language manual of this smartphone is available for download now online. The German version is available as well, it will be up in additional languages as well as time passes but for now only English and German are available.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 manual in English can be downloaded in PDF from here, and in German from here.

Sprint Galaxy S5 SM-G900P Android 4.4.4 update leaked

Even though Samsung has been pretty quick in rolling out the latest version of KitKat, Android 4.4.4, to its major devices yet Sprint subscribers are still waiting for the update on their Galaxy S5 units. The carrier itself has not revealed when it would be rolling out this update so there’s a bit of confusion at this point regarding the release timeframe.

If you absolutely must have Android 4.4.4 on your Sprint Galaxy S5 SM-G900P then there’s an unofficial solution. A pre-release build of this update has been leaked online by an “anonymous donor,” and while its not an official release it is said to be stable enough to use as a daily driver.

Link to the download file and install instructions are available at XDA forums. Since its going to be a full store which deletes data stored on the device it would be best to backup any and all data before proceeding with the update.

Samsung explains the ‘Edge’ display on the Galaxy Note Edge with an infographic

The Galaxy Note Edge is an important device, perhaps more so than the Galaxy Note 4. It’s a sign that we are finally approaching a time when curved displays can become more commonplace than before, even if the Galaxy Note Edge itself will be a concept device. What makes the Galaxy Note Edge so special is what Samsung is calling the Edge Screen, a curved display on the side of the phone for displaying additional content, and today, Samsung has released an infographic to talk about the features of the Edge Screen.

As we’ve already known, the Edge screen can be used to quickly launch apps, view notifications without moving away from the content on the main 5.7-inch Quad HD display, and even for doodling with the S Pen. It can also be used by apps to display special information (for example, a stopwatch can show the timer and a button to let you start and stop the counter), though it will be up to developers to take advantage of that.

Take a look at the infographic below, and let us know if you’re intending to buy the Galaxy Note Edge (despite its high price.)

Samsung’s new Galaxy Note 4 ad is extremely silly and full of forced puns

Samsung’s commercials are usually quite good and entertaining, but the new ad released by the company for the Galaxy Note 4 will probably have you tearing your hair out. At 4 minutes long, the ad is basically about two guys so taken with the Galaxy Note 4 that they decide to include the word ‘note’ into everything they say. So you have one guy going “I’d like a cappuccinote” to “the new features are really fascinoting” – it’s extremely silly, but it’s possible many will find it equally funny as well.

Don’t take our word for it, just go ahead and click the play button below to watch the new Galaxy Note 4 commercial.

Clove UK taking pre-orders for Samsung Galaxy Note Edge, priced at £650

UK retailer Clove recently said that the Galaxy Note Edge won’t be coming to the UK in its initial launch and that units of the device would be hard to come by. However, it seems Clove is pretty confident it will be able to get the device from elsewhere, something the retailer said it would try to do, as it is now taking pre-orders for the curved display Galaxy Note. Given its “limited concept device” nature, the Galaxy Note Edge has been priced accordingly high – you will need to shell out a whopping £650 in order to get your hands on one.

Even if you are ready to spend that amount though, Clove hasn’t yet mentioned when it will start shipping or stocking the Galaxy Note Edge. It will likely be a while before the retailer can do that, though hopefully users will have the choice of buying it from other retailers soon enough. For now, hit that source link to pre-order the Galaxy Note Edge from Clove, and read our hands-on experience with the device.

Samsung Gear S coming to major US carriers in the fall

Samsung’s SIM, Wi-Fi and curved display-toting Gear S smartwatch will be making its way to the US sometime later this fall, the company has announced. The Gear S will be offered by Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint and AT&T, and it’s possible the smaller carriers will also be offering it for sale at some point. T-Mobile will be releasing more information on the watch sometime in October, which will likely include pricing and a concrete release date, while AT&T has said that its retail stores will be offering “previews” of the smartwatch soon.

The Gear S sports a 2-inch curved Super AMOLED display, and is the first smartwatch from Samsung and in general that supports an inbuilt SIM card slot and Wi-Fi chip for standalone operation. Other hardware includes a 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB internal storage, and a 300 mAh battery that offers battery life of up to two days; the Gear S runs on Tizen like the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo, and you can check out our hands-on preview of the watch here.

Samsung brings its Milk Music streaming service to South Korea

Earlier this year, Samsung launched a new music streaming service called Milk Music to take on the streaming industry, but unlike most its product launches, Milk Music wasn’t available in the company’s home country. It looks like Samsung has now rectified that and has made Milk Music available in South Korea, according to a screenshot sent to us by one of our readers. The service should be similar to the offering in the US – you should be able to stream music from various stations, skip tracks, and create personal stations from your favorite ones.

It’s unclear if Samsung will offer the option to get a premium subscription (which costs $3.99 in the US and lets you skip unlimited tracks and listen to them offline) in South Korea just yet. It probably will at some point of time; right now, if you’re in South Korea, don’t forget to download Milk Music from the Google Play Store (or Samsung Apps) and start listening to some free music.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 could launch in India in first week of October

The Indian smartphone market might be seeing the most growth in the budget smartphone segment, but the high-end market is still quite strong for Samsung in the country, and it looks like that might lead the Korean manufacturer to launch the Galaxy Note 4 in India in the first week of October. That’s before the launch of the device in the U.S. and the UK, though unlike those regions, there is no word on what price tag the Galaxy Note 4 will carry in India. It will likely cross the Rs. 50,000 mark at launch, but as we’ve seen in the past, online retailers should be able to sell it for a lot less a week or so after the phablet goes on sale.

The Galaxy Note 4 features a 5.7-inch Quad HD (2560×1440) Super AMOLED display, an octa-core Exynos 5433 chipset, 3GB of RAM, a 16-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization, a 3.7-megapixel front-facing camera, 32/64GB of expandable internal storage, a 3,220 mAh battery, and Android 4.4.4 KitKat. It also comes with the traditional S Pen stylus, and is the first Galaxy Note smartphone to feature a metallic body.

Any of our Indian readers looking forward to buying the Galaxy Note 4?

With the Galaxy Alpha making headlines everywhere for its attractive metallic design, Samsung is taking a chance to explain just how the Galaxy Alpha “sets a new standard for smartphone design,” following an infographic that went into detail about how the phone’s metallic frame is constructed. The new infographic talks of the overall design – how the sides of the phone are diamond cut, how it has a solid grip with its mix of metal and a soft texture, and some general stuff like the different colors the phone is available in. It’s basically another infographic showing how Samsung is proud of what it has created with the Galaxy Alpha, even though it was all a bit too late, especially for a manufacturer with so many resources at its disposal.

‘Oculus Platform’ and mobile SDK for developers announced

Samsung has joined forces with Oculus to step into the world of virtual reality. Its first headset, the Gear VR, is going to be released later this fall. Oculus and Samsung have also been working on a developer device called Gear VR Innovator Edition which will be released in the coming months as well.

In order to provide developers with a platform where they can sell their applications and media content the Facebook-owned virtual reality company has announced the “Oculus Platform” store. Developers will be able to offer their content here for the Samsung Gear VR. Oculus aims to have this platform up and running across native mobile apps, desktop browsers as well as VR devices.

Some of the apps that Oculus has developed itself will debut on the new platform, these include the Oculus 360 Photos and Videos and the Oculus Cinema application. It will essentially function as a launcher for VR devices allowing users to access content and applications easily.

Oculus confirms ‘VR Quest’ game for Samsung Gear VR

The Facebook-owned virtual reality company Oculus has confirmed that its going to make a new game for the Samsung Gear VR, a virtual reality headset that Samsung built in collaboration with Oculus. The company says that the game will be released with the working title “VR Quest” after Samsung’s virtual reality headset hits the market.

There’s no confirmed release date as yet for the Samsung Gear VR. When the company unveiled it back at IFA 2014 it said that the device will ship later this fall for $199. It also requires a Galaxy Note 4 to function so users would be required to purchase a unit of Samsung’s latest flagship as well.

Oculus made the announcement for “VR Quest” during its first Oculus Connect developer conference. The game is going to be a third-person dungeon crawler which Oculus CTO John Carmack described as “Zelda-esque.” No additional details about the game were revealed at this point in time and neither was the expected release date revealed.

We’ll have to wait until the Gear VR hits the market to find out these details.

The all new My KNOX app makes mixing business and pleasure even easier

Approximately two months ago, Samsung was making news with its KNOX security software. Specifically, Samsung announced that certain components of KNOX would be incorporated directly into the upcoming Android L release. The Korean company emphasized that it would continue to develop the software, and has now released the My KNOX app targeted at individuals who use their personal phones as their work phones. KNOX Premium and KNOX Express – additional mobile security software products aimed at IT managers – were also refreshed and promoted.

My KNOX – as the video below will show – is designed for those who use one phone for all of their needs, When those needs include sensitive work-related materials, My KNOX is able to securely maintain that content on your phone, by way of encryption and verification. An additional feature worth highlighting is a remote lock and wipe option for the unfortunate event in which you’ve lost your smartphone. Now, the My KNOX app is currently only compatible with the Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy Note 4, but we’d have to imagine that future updates will change that. Take a look below for a more visual understanding of how MY KNOX might fit your needs. You can download it here.

Samsung working on in-house GPU for its Exynos mobile CPUs

Back before the Galaxy S5 was launched and rumors were swirling around its hardware, we heard rumblings of Samsung working on a GPU of its own for use in its Exynos chips. Today, that rumor has resurfaced – according to reports, Samsung has continued work on the GPU and managed to hire engineers from Nvidia, AMD, Intel and other companies, most of which are well-known in making GPUs for personal computers. Development has apparently been going on for a few years; it’s not surprising that Samsung is working on developing a GPU, as using an in-house mobile GPU would free the company from having to license mobile GPUs from other chip makers (Samsung currently uses ARM’s Mali series of mobile graphics.)

An in-house chip would also allow Samsung to make its Exynos chips more and more a fully home-grown project, though given the long time it takes to design chips from the ground up, it could be a while before we see the Korean manufacturer announce an Exynos chip with its own GPU. Given the fact that Samsung is moving more and more towards using its Exynos processors instead of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chip in many countries (thanks to the inclusion of on-board LTE on the latest Exynos variants), the company will likely take its time in making sure its first mobile GPU gets everything right and is capable of going head to head with the well-established competition.

Clove says the UK won’t be part of initial Galaxy Note Edge launch, confirms Galaxy Note 4 pricing

Recently, an analyst suggested that Samsung will only be able to ship around 1 million units of the Galaxy Note Edge in 2014 thanks to the fact that the curved Edge display of the device has a complicated manufacturing process. Now, UK retailer Clove has also come up with a statement saying that when the Galaxy Note Edge launches, there will be no stock available in UK. Samsung hasn’t yet confirmed anything, but distribution channels have reportedly told Clove that the UK won’t be among the countries the Note Edge will initially launch in, and that most European countries won’t be getting it.

This doesn’t come as surprising, considering information SamMobile received recently also suggested that the UK won’t be part of the initial launch. However, Clove has said that for those looking to buy the Galaxy Note Edge, it will try to source non-UK stock, though again, given the limited regions the device will be launching in, it remains to be seen just how easy it will be for consumers to get hold of one. Pricing isn’t confirmed either, but you can be sure the Galaxy Note Edge won’t be too affordable given its unique selling point.

Thankfully, the Galaxy Note 4 won’t be so elusive, as Clove says that the first stock due to arrive in the week starting October 13. The fourth-generation Note flagship will be priced at £575, and people will likely be able to buy it for less on monthly plans.

Analyst predicts 11 million Galaxy Note 4 and 1 million Galaxy Note Edge units will be shipped in 2014

Samsung is done with the announcement of its new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy Note 4. At the event it also unveiled the Galaxy Note Edge. Both devices are set to hit the market later this fall but an analyst believes they won’t set new milestones for the company.

A Hyundai Securities analyst expects Samsung to ship 11 million units of the Galaxy Note 4 and just 1 million units of the Galaxy Note Edge. The former’s shipments won’t eclipse that of its predecessor, Galaxy Note 3, which was released around the same time last year.

As far as the Galaxy Note Edge is concerned the analyst believes that since this device’s manufacturing process is likely complicated it will result in fewer shipments, lending weight to reports that Samsung’s new device with a wraparound display will be available in limited quantities.

This sentiment is echoed by other analysts as well, which means that they don’t expect the latest Galaxy Note to perform better than its predecessor. Though it should be pointed out here that shipments don’t necessarily equal to sales. Ultimately the performance will be judged by how many units Samsung is able to sell to consumers, and those numbers are rarely released.

Samsung’s new ads take a swing at iPhone 6 and Apple Watch

On September 9th Apple unveiled two new iPhones and its first wearable device called the Apple Watch. Both iPhone 6 models come with significantly larger displays whereas the Apple Watch tries to disrupt the wearable market with something the company calls “digital crown.”

If there’s anyone out there who knows a thing or two about smartphones with large displays and smartwatches, its Samsung. Less than a day after Apple’s event the company has released a series of new ads that take a swing at the new product lineup from Cupertino.

One ad makes fun of how Apple’s live stream of the event was unable to cope up with the traffic. Viewers around the world were complaining about an unresponsive stream, many had taken to Twitter to vent their frustration. Another deals with how long Apple has kept the iPhone out of the literal “big” leagues by not increasing the display size beyond 4-inches until now.

Each ad runs for approximately 30 seconds, it won’t take that long to go through all of them.

Galaxy S5 Android 4.4.4 KitKat update released by Verizon

A couple of months back Google rolled out Android 4.4.4 KitKat, it was merely an incremental update that brought many important bug fixes and performance improvements. The update was immediately released for Google’s Nexus devices and many OEMs then followed suit. Samsung has lagged behind somewhat and users with carrier locked devices have had to wait for considerably longer as always.

Nevertheless, there is some good news after all. The Samsung Galaxy S5 Android 4.4.4 update has been released by Verizon for customers in the U.S. The release comes merely a week after Samsung pushed out this update for Galaxy S3 Neo in Kazakhstan and just yesterday Sprint rolled it out for its Galaxy Note 3 variant.

Australian carrier Optus has also released the Galaxy S5 Android 4.4.4 KitKat update so users down under can also get on the latest iteration of Google’s mobile OS. It remains to be seen when other carriers, particularly those in the U.S., follow suit.

Samsung launches the Galaxy Tab Active, a ruggedized tablet for businesses

Water-resistant and rugged mobile devices are all too common in the consumer world, but those qualities haven’t permeated devices in the enterprise market. Samsung is looking to change that with the Galaxy Tab Active, a tablet that comes with IP67 certification for water resistance and an anti-shock covering that can withstand a 1.2-meter drop. The tablet is aimed at those working in enterprise – for example, Samsung is touting the inbuilt NFC connectivity as a great tool for transportation and logistics managers, and the rugged nature of the device as an advantage for retail auto sales representatives.

Like the Galaxy Note tablets, the Galaxy Tab Active comes with a stylus that Samsung is calling the C-Pen, something the company thinks those who have to wear gloves in their field of work can use as an alternative to standard touch input. The display on the tablet is an 8-inch unit of WXGA (1280×800) pixels resolution, and apart from the solid build, the Galaxy Tab Active sports mostly mid-range specs, like a Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor, 1.5GB RAM, a 3.1-megapixel rear camera, 16GB of internal storage and a microSD slot, a 4,450 mAh battery touted for 8-10 hours of general usage, and Android 4.4 KitKat.

The Galaxy Tab Active will be available in both Wi-Fi and LTE variants sometime later this year, and will come with the C-Pen and a Protective Cover right in the box. Samsung is only offering the Titanium Green color option; pricing hasn’t been revealed, but we’re guessing it will cost around the same as Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 4 range of mid-range tablets.

As any sensible person would tell you, Samsung’s plethora of smartwatches have little future without a good developer community to back it up, and the launch of the SDK should help Samsung see its app store for wearables grow beyond the 1,000 or so apps that it currently offers to users.

If you’re a developer, head over to the source link to grab the SDK.

Samsung SM-A500 shows up on GFXBench

One of Samsung’s upcoming A series phones, the SM-A500, is making yet another appearance in the wild, this time through a listing on the GFXBench benchmark database. The benchmark listing has revealed most of the specs of the device, which fit nicely in the mid-range. The hardware includes a 4.8-inch HD display, a 64-bit Snapdragon 410 processor, 2GB of RAM, a 12-megapixel rear camera, 4.7-megapixel front camera (this will likely be a 3.7-megapixel unit like the Galaxy Note 4′s), 8GB of storage, and Android 4.4.4 KitKat.

Some of the specs are similar to those of the Galaxy Alpha, and the SM-A500′s design will be similar as well, which means it will have some metal in its construction. With the high amount of leaks about the device in recent days, it shouldn’t be long before Samsung makes an official announcement, though it will likely be a few weeks after initial excitement about the Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy Alpha has died down.

Software talent reportedly being shifted from Android to Tizen

Samsung has already devoted a lot of time and resources to Tizen, however the nascent operating system still has a long way to go before it can become standard on Samsung’s mobile devices and replace Android. The company has already released several devices powered by Tizen, including but not limited to a smartphone, smartwatches, smart cameras and even a TV.

Rumor has it that Samsung Electronics has begun moving software resources that were previously working with Android OS for Galaxy devices over to Tizen. Apparently the move is quite a bit one and may even have resulted in more than 1000 people begin moved over from Android to Tizen. Samsung reportedly has a 5,000 strong team of developers that’s tasked with further developing and improving its operating system.

No confirmation has come in from Samsung regarding this move so it would be best to take it with a grain of salt.
