Galaxy S5 Neo Blueborne fix has been released

The Galaxy S5 Neo Blueborne fix has been released today. Samsung rolled out a similar fix for the Galaxy S5 recently. Samsung updated the handset to Android 7.0 Nougat just last month. The August security patch for the Galaxy S5 Neo also arrived last month.

This latest update only brings the Blueborne fix for this handset. The security patch level has been retained at August 2017. No new features and tweaks are included in this firmware update.

Galaxy S5 Blueborne fix

Blueborne is a Bluetooth-based vulnerability that was recently discovered. It affects Android, Windows and some iOS devices. Samsung has spent the last few weeks rolling out Blueborne fixes for its most popular models.

The Galaxy S5 Neo Blueborne fix will prevent attackers from exploiting this vulnerability. They can do that to gain access to the device without the user even knowing. The vulnerability can be used for malicious code execution which means data can be stolen from the device.

Samsung is now rolling out firmware version G903FXXS1BQI2 for the Galaxy S5 Neo. It’s rolling out over-the-air and is also available for download from our firmware section.

There’s still no clarity on the Nougat update for this handset in Europe. Samsung has released Nougat for the Galaxy S5 Neo elsewhere but it’s not out in Europe yet.

PSA: LibreLink is no longer compatible with the Galaxy S8

For some strange reason, LibreLink, the popular glucose-monitoring application for Android, is no longer compatible with the Galaxy S8 (and Galaxy S8+). The tool worked when the handset first launched back in April, but has since been disabled by way of an over-the-air maintenance update.

We aren’t sure why exactly Samsung has decided to revoke the required permissions, but some readers believe it has something to do with the handset’s NFC chip not playing nicely with the FreeStyle Libre glucose sensors. That doesn’t, however, explain why it still works on the Galaxy Note 8.

You can’t even sideload the APK. Trust us, we tried. Multiple times. Attempting to do so results in alert appearing, which instructs you to install the application from the Play Store, but seeing as it’s no longer compatible with the Galaxy S8, you can’t—so you get stuck in a vicious loop.

Hopefully compatibility is reinstated soon.

Galaxy A3 (2016) charging bug fixed by latest maintenance update

Samsung has started rolling out a much-needed maintenance update for the Galaxy A3 (2016) and Galaxy A5 (2016) in Europe, which fixes an issue that prevented the former from charging beyond 87 percent and transports a patch for a frustrating “IMS Service Stopped” bug that was affecting both handsets in the Netherlands.

It’s unclear why exactly the Galaxy A3 (2016) was unable to charge to its maximum capacity, though many online publications believe the glitch was caused by a faulty line of code in a recent update the device received that was designed to patch the nasty BlueBorne security vulnerability (more details on that here).

If you’d like to check to see if the update is ready for your Galaxy A3 (2016) or Galaxy A5 (2016)A310FXXU3CQI8 and A510FXXU4CQI9, respectively—all you need to do is open up Settings, select Software Update, then tap Download Updates Manually. You can, however, wait until you receive an alert instructing you to install the upgrade.

Verizon now rolling out Android 7.1.1 Nougat update for the Galaxy Tab E 8.0

Verizon has today released the long-awaited Android 7.1.1 Nougat update—T377VVRU1CQH9—for the Galaxy Tab E 8.0 in the United States, following US Cellular’s rollout for its carrier-branded variant of the slate, which shipped running Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, last week.

The upgrade transports all of the features you’d expect to find baked into Nougat, including enhanced notifications, stricter application permissions, additional emoji and refined battery saving tools, as well as the security patches included in August’s Security Maintenance Release (SMR).

It’s impressive that both Samsung and local carriers have assisted the Galaxy Tab E 8.0 in its jump from Android 5.1.1 Lollipop to Android 6.0 Marshmallow and now to Android 7.1.1 Nougat during its year and a half on the market, though it’s likely the last major update it will receive.

How do I install the Nougat update on my Galaxy Tab E 8.0?

We should point out that it can take up to a week for the upgrade to reach your Galaxy Tab E 8.0, so don’t panic if it doesn’t show up right away. To check to see if it’s ready for your unit, head into Settings, select About Device, then tap Download Updates Manually.

How Samsung used advertising to recover from Galaxy Note 7 recall

Samsung found itself in a world of trouble this time last year. Its new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy Note 7, would combust spontaneously. It recalled the initial batch of units and made tweaks but that didn’t do it any good. Samsung ultimately had to issue a second recall and discontinue the product.

The rumors about the future of Samsung’s Galaxy Note lineup began. Some analysts felt that the Galaxy Note 7 recall had caused permanent damage to Samsung’s reputation. Others were sounding alarm bells for the company’s smartphone business. However, Samsung bounced back in spectacular fashion this year.

Galaxy Note 7 Recall

Samsung’s head of global brand marketing for the mobile business Pio Schunker that the company was in the midst of a rebrand of sorts when the Galaxy Note 7 crisis hit. He was speaking at the ANA’s Masters of Marketing Conference in Orlando.

Samsung had been working to revamp its image with ads that humanized the brand and connected with people on a global scale. The company’s 2016 Rio Olympics ad was cited as an example of this by Schunker.

He added that Samsung was seeing signs of success from its efforts to revamp the brand. However, it all went south due to the Galaxy Note 7 recall.

“Just when things were starting to go right, things went horribly wrong,” he said. Samsung suddenly faced its biggest challenge yet. A flagship product with a defective battery that threatened to permanently damage its business and reputation.

Samsung’s first priority was to rebuild trust. It detailed the root cause at a special press conference in January this year. It also detailed its new battery safety measures at the press conference. “Slowly, over the next few months, we saw the company trust begin to recover and then begin to stabilize,” Schunker said.

Samsung was then gearing up to launch the Galaxy S8, its first flagship after the Galaxy Note 7 recall. Schunker said that the stakes were much higher with the marketing direction. Samsung had to “recover and repair all the damage that had happened over the previous months.”

Not only did the company’s new flagship leave everyone impressed, Samsung also released moving ads that humanized its brand. They included Samsung’s award-winning ostrich ad that promoted the Gear VR headset.

Schunker mentioned that Samsung’s ads were part of the plan to rebuild its brand after the Galaxy Note 7 recall. The response it has seen so far for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 suggests that the Galaxy Note 7 hasn’t cast a long shadow.

Galaxy S8 named Phone of the Year at Mobile Choice Consumer Awards

The Galaxy S8 was named Phone of the Year at TechRadar‘s annual Mobile Choice Consumer Awards on Thursday. The handset also took home the gong for Best Camera Phone of 2017, while Samsung was awarded the title of Manufacturer of the Year—and let’s face it, it isn’t difficult to see why.

Cast your mind back to September, 2016. A revolutionary plus-sized smartphone hit the shelves, only to be recalled a couple of months later. Yes, we’re talking about the Galaxy Note 7. There’s no denying that the debacle could have had a catastrophic effect on the firm’s reputation, but it didn’t.

Samsung worked tirelessly to handle the entire fiasco professionally, introducing an extensive 8-Point Battery Safety Check to restore confidence from consumers, then later releasing the Galaxy S8, a handset that—unsurprisingly—went on to set a number of pre-order records.

What about the Galaxy Note 8?

Even though we’re a big fan of the recently-released Galaxy Note 8, we’re in agreement with TechRadar: The Galaxy S8 really is the Phone of the Year. It’s durable, innovative, powerful, stunning and, most importantly, affordable. What more could you possibly want from a smartphone?

Apple vs Samsung review request should be denied, says US DOJ

The Apple vs Samsung lawsuit has been an epic legal battle between the two tech giants. Samsung scored a win last year when the United States Supreme Court unanimously ruled in its favor. The apex court ruled that the infringement of design patents may only involve a component and not the entire product.

This means that Apple can’t claim all proceedings from an infringing device. Apple had previously been awarded $399 million in damages as an appeals court ruled that Samsung had copied key iPhone designs. That ruling was thrown out by the Supreme Court’s unanimous verdict.

Apple vs Samsung: Clash Of The Titans

Samsung approached the Supreme Court in March to review another aspect of the case with Apple. It was a 2014 verdict which had held Samsung responsible for patent infringement and awarded $120 million in damages to Apple. Samsung filed a petition for a writ of certiorari before the court. That’s when you approach a higher court to review the decision of a lower court.

It appears that the United States Department of Justice has had enough of this legal battle. It wants the Supreme Court to deny Samsung’s petition. “In the view of the United States, the petition for a writ of certiorari should be denied,” the DOJ said in a filing.

Whether the Supreme Court actually denies the petition remains to be seen. Neither Apple nor Samsung have commented on the DOJ’s position in this matter.

Galaxy S8 missing texts issue irks users

Quite a few people have complained about the Galaxy S8 missing texts issue. This has been experienced by many Galaxy S8 owners. It actually appears to be a common issue with the Samsung flagship regardless of the carrier. Galaxy S8+ owners have also complained about the very same issue. The text messages are either delayed or they don’t arrive at all.

It’s unclear at this point in time what’s the cause of this issue. There hasn’t been any clarity on the matter from Samsung so it’s anybody’s guess right now. Users are understandably irked so hopefully, Samsung will be out with a fix soon.

Galaxy S8 Missing Texts Issue

There are several threads on Reddit for Galaxy S8 users who have experienced this issue on Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint. This goes to show that the Galaxy S8 missing texts issue isn’t just limited to one carrier. It would have been easier to understand the cause behind this had it been limited to just one carrier.

Not only that, users have also experienced that this issue isn’t limited to a specific messaging app. The issue is present in Samsung’s default Messaging app, Android Messages and Textra. It’s unclear what can be done right now to fix this issue.

A suggested fix involves turning off Advanced Messaging in the default app but it doesn’t seem to get the job done. Samsung hasn’t said anything about the Galaxy S8 missing texts issue as yet. It’s unclear if and when a fix for this issue will arrive.
