Galaxy M01s to feature a 4,000mAh battery

We had exclusively reported last week that Samsung is developing an S-branded version of the Galaxy M01 with slightly better specifications. The phone could be launched as the Galaxy M01s, and it will feature 32GB of inbuilt storage space. It was also being expected that it could feature a more powerful processor and higher capacity battery than the Galaxy M01. However, it looks like Samsung is upgrading its battery.

The Galaxy M01s passed through TÜV Rheinland’s battery safety certification in Japan, revealing that it will feature a 3,900mAh battery, similar to the Galaxy M01. Samsung will market it as a 4,000mAh battery. The entry-level smartphone had also passed through the Wi-Fi certification process last month, revealing that it was running Android 9.0. However, knowing that the Galaxy M01 was launched recently with Android 10 out of the box, it is possible that Samsung will launch the Galaxy M01s with Android 10 and One UI 2 as well.

The upcoming affordable smartphone from Samsung had appeared in Geekbench’s database last month, and it was revealed that the phone could use the MediaTek Helio P22 processor (MT6762V/WB) and 3GB RAM. The phone will also be available in two color options: Blue and Grey. Details about other specifications of the Galaxy M01s are scarce right now, but we should know more by the time Samsung starts teasing the phone’s launch.

Samsung is also working on a trimmed-down version of the Galaxy M01, and it could be launched as the Galaxy M01 Core. The phone recently received Wi-Fi certification, revealing that it runs Android 10 and has a dual-SIM card slot.

Samsung QLED TVs with first-class energy-efficiency rating launched in South Korea

Samsung has announced the launch of its QT67 series QLED TV models with a first-class energy efficiency rating in its home market South Korea. This is the first time that the company has launched a QLED TV with such high energy efficiency ratings. Earlier, the company had introduced its Crystal UHD TVs with the same grade.

The QT67 QLED TV series is available in six sizes, starting from 43 inches and going as high as 85 inches. It is available in 50-inch, 55-inch, 65-inch, and 75-inch versions as well. The 43-inch version of the QT67 QLED TV is priced at KRW 990,000, and the 85-inch version goes as high as KRW 5,490,000 (around $4,570).

Despite offering South Korea’s first-class energy efficiency rating, all these models offer excellent image quality, thanks to the QLED panel, with the ability to reproduce 100% of the color volume and Quantum HDR. Customers purchasing this new TV during the offer period will be eligible to receive a 10% refund (up to a maximum of KRW 300,000) per person from the Korea Energy Management Corporation.

When South Korean consumers buy a 55-inch or larger version of the QT67 series QLED TV, they will be eligible to receive a discount of up to KRW 600,000, including refunds and a KRW 300,000 benefit from Samsung. According to market research firm OMDIA, the global sales of QLED TVs are expected to be 31.7 million units in the first half of 2020, up by more than 50% (22.1 million units) from last year.

Jong-Seok Chu, VP of Samsung Electronics’ Video Display Business Unit, said, “Samsung TV is trying to deliver meaningful value to consumers in addition to image quality such as recently released eco-packages and safety-grade certifications for vision protection. It will also contribute to energy savings.”

$900 Samsung Galaxy Fold Lite rumored to arrive next year

As flagship smartphones continue to get more expensive, Samsung has taken to launching “Lite” variants of its high-end devices. These are watered-down variants that bring the price down to a more palatable level for most customers. After launching the Galaxy S10 Lite and Galaxy Note 10 Lite, the company is due to launch a similar model for the Galaxy S20.

Might it do the same for the Galaxy Fold? If there was any device that needed a more affordable variant, it would be the $1,980 Galaxy Fold. According to a report out of South Korea, Samsung is planning on launching a ~$900 Galaxy Fold Lite in 2021.

What could Samsung cut from the Galaxy Fold Lite?

The dubious report claims that this device, tentatively named the Galaxy Fold Lite, was to be unveiled on August 5 alongside the Galaxy Fold 2, Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Z Flip 5G. However, Samsung has apparently decided to postpone its launch to 2021.

When it does arrive, this handset is expected to cost 1 million won which is under $900 based on prevailing exchange rates. Samsung would undoubtedly have to cut a lot of things from it if such a variant does exist in order to bring the price down to this level.

So would that mean there won’t be a cover display, complex camera setup and flagship-level internals? That could very well end up being the case as Samsung won’t be able to cut costs when it comes to the really important bits like the hinge and foldable display panel.

There’s no denying the possibility of this happening in the future. Samsung is all-in on foldable phones so a future where it offers more affordable options is very much within reach. Whether or not that happens in 2021 remains to be seen.

This is the most thoughtful camera feature Samsung has ever conceived

Every new Galaxy flagship is accompanied by new camera features. Almost all of the time, most of them are features you would only use sparingly. Of course, that doesn’t mean that these features shouldn’t exist – having a wide gamut of functionality to tackle all kinds of needs and situations is paramount on smartphones today.

And, in my opinion, one feature that debuted on the Galaxy S20 series — and has since been introduced on other devices, including the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10, with One UI 2.1 — is the most thoughtful one Samsung has ever conceived: Single Take.

Just one tap to record both photos and videos at the same time

What is Single Take? Well, it’s the answer to a dilemma almost all of us have probably faced at some point in our life: Choosing whether to shoot a video or capture a still photo in a particular moment. With Single Take, you can do both: When you press the shutter button in Single Take mode, the camera uses artificial intelligence to capture both photos and videos of whatever is in the frame for 10 seconds.

In addition to taking standard photos, Single Take also creates photos with random filters applied, ultra-wide photos (using the ultra-wide rear camera), Live Focus bokeh pictures, panorama shots, and smart crops that cut out some part of the scene for a more artistic look. It also records short clips in addition to a regular video, including boomerang clips, slow-motion clips, and hyperlapse clips. You can then choose what to keep and what to delete.

In this video, you can see the photos and videos Single Take recorded when I panned the camera around at the scene right outside my house:

Situations where Single Take can come in handy are many. You can point the camera at your friend or family member while they’re blowing out the candles and cutting their birthday cake to automatically get both videos and photos of the moment – according to Samsung, this was one of the main use cases that led to the development of Single Take. Single Take is also great for recording your kids or pets in action, or for capturing beautiful landscapes when you’re on a holiday.

While Single Take is yet another camera feature that you won’t use every day, it’s one of the more useful ones that you can’t live without once you’ve used it. It’s stuff like this that truly enhances a smartphone’s user experience, and I can only hope Samsung will continue to focus on creating more unique features like Single Take going forward.

What do you think? Do you use Single Take mode on your Galaxy smartphone?
