Samsung Pay predicted to clinch early lead against competitors

Samsung announced its mobile payments service back in March, so far the company has not confirmed when Samsung Pay will go live, only that it will initially be available for customers in the United States and South Korea. We did report recently on the possibility of Samsung Pay going live by September this year and so far the company has not said anything on the contrary. A new report predicts that due to its unique technology Samsung Pay might be able to clinch an early lead in the mobile payments segment as opposed to its competitors which include Apple Pay and Android Pay.

A major obstacle that prevents mobile payments from taking off has to do with merchants not rapidly upgrading to terminals that support these new technologies. Services like Apple Pay and Android Pay require merchants to have near field communication or NFC terminals in order to accept payments and while merchants are upgrading to new terminals it’s not happening fast enough, obviously there’s a cost involved and many merchants particularly those who work on a small scale are not willing to invest in them.

Samsung worked around this problem by acquiring a company earlier this year called LoopPay. The company developed a technology called Magnetic Secure Transmission or MST which Samsung Pay relies upon. This eliminates the need for NFC terminals and lets merchants accept payments using their existing credit card readers. Moreover, Samsung Pay will also allow users to pay by simply presenting a barcode which can be scanned at checkout. This means that Samsung’s mobile payments service will be readily available at almost all merchants across the United States, and even in South Korea for that matter. This is one of the reasons why BI Intelligence reports that Samsung Pay is going to play a major role to drive mobile payments in the US to more than $800 billion by the end of 2019.

Samsung explains the evolution of Galaxy S series wallpapers

If you are someone who followed the launch of every Galaxy S series smartphone, you would’ve noticed that Samsung ships every new Galaxy S series device with new wallpapers. If you thought that the company chooses some random wallpapers, think again. Samsung has explained its theory behind the wallpaper selection for each Galaxy S series smartphone launched till now.

Apparently, the default wallpaper on the Galaxy S was chosen in such a way that it displayed detailed textures, highlighting the Super AMOLED display’s capabilities. The wallpaper on the Galaxy S II symbolized strong performance and improved software, while the Galaxy S III’s wallpapers were nature-themed to match the device’s tagline ‘Designed for Humans’. The wallpapers on the Galaxy S4 tried to showcase happy moments in life, while the Galaxy S5 wallpapers were inspired by a diamond surface.

Coming to the latest Galaxy S launch from the South Korean smartphone giant, the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge wallpapers depict the futuristic and fluidic design of these devices. This infographic also reminds us that Samsung’s Android smartphone offerings have come a long way since their initial days, bringing in massive improvement generation after generation.

Samsung NX1 firmware 1.3 upgrade brings many new features and improvements

The Samsung NX1 firmware 1.3 upgrade was recently released and it brings a host of new features and improvements particularly for the camera’s video recording as it gets a major improvement in quality. Firmware 1.3 for the NX1 doubles the amount of data read by the camera’s sensor and this results into improved quality of the 60p Full HD video with more detail and significantly less noise.

Firmware 1.3 also adds Full HD 120p recording to the camera allowing for much smoother video capture, previously users had to switch to slow-motion for 120p recording but it’s now the standard option even when recording voice. This upgrade also allows the user to adjust the sensitivity of the manual focus in both still and video modes, and it enables the camera to display histogram and digital levels during standby/recording mode. Users will notice while shooting stills that the auto focus performance has been greatly improved as there’s a new Zone AF which enables them to focus on and track a moving object in a particular area.

Samsung NX1 firmware 1.3 upgrade can be downloaded from Samsung.com and copied to the camera’s SD card, or the upgrade can be applied through the iLaunch software. If the camera is connected to the internet via Wi-Fi the upgrade can easily be downloaded over-the-air on the NX1 itself.

Samsung’s ‘Ultimate Upgrade’ promotion gives customers a $100 rebate on the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge

This is shaping up to be a great week to purchase the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge if you’re based in the United States. T-Mobile is kicking off a new promotion through which it’s providing a free memory upgrade to customers who purchase these handsets and now even Samsung has launched its “Ultimate Upgrade” promotion which will provide customers with a $100 rebate should they purchase a 64GB Galaxy S6 or S6 edge.

T-Mobile’s promotion is obviously limited to customers who purchase the handsets on its network but that’s not the case with Ultimate Upgrade, Samsung will give the rebate after customers have purchased the handset at a carrier or national retailer of their choice. The idea behind this promotion is to cover the difference between the 32GB and 64GB models of the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge which it most certainly does, customers only have to purchase the 64GB model of either smartphone at full price to get $100 back from Samsung. Once the device has been purchased customers have to head over to this Samsung website to get the rebate. Samsung is running the Ultimate Upgrade promotion until July 5.

Two Samsung 4K monitors with AMD’s FreeSync technology go on sale

Samsung had already launched some UHD monitors last year, but it is constantly trying to improve its monitor lineup by adding more features. Today, two new monitors – the U24E590D and the U28E590D – with AMD’s FreeSync technology, which were announced back at the company’s Future of Compute event last year, went on sale today.

The U24E590D and U28E590D are 24-inch and 28-inch monitors respectively with 4K UHD (3840×2160) resolution, 370cd/m2 brightness, HDMI 2.0, and supports 60 Hz frequency. However, it is to be noted that the 28-inch model has a TN panel (16.7 million colors) with 1ms response time, while the 24-inch model features a PLS panel (1.07 billion) with 4ms response time. Both of them feature an HDMI 2.0 port, an HDMI 1.2 port, and a Display Port 1.2. The U24E590D is priced at $399, while the U28E590D is priced at $599.

AMD’s FreeSync technology synchronizes the monitor’s refresh rates to eliminate large jumps in frame time for better screen responsiveness and reduction in screen tearing and shuttering, which is quite beneficial for gamers.

T-Mobile offering free memory upgrade for the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge

The fourth largest mobile carrier in the United States, T-Mobile, has launched a new promotion through which it is providing a free memory upgrade for customers who purchase the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge. T-Mobile actually offered a similar promotion a couple of weeks back as well, though this time around the promotion is only going to be valid for a few days so customers who have been on the fence about these handsets should make up their minds quickly if they want to pick one up from T-Mobile.

As you all know very well the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge don’t feature microSD card slots so it’s impossible to expand the onboard storage unless you heavily rely upon cloud storage services. Samsung is selling these handsets in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB flavors but the price increases with every storage tier and that’s not acceptable to some customers.

Playing on this, T-Mobile is running a promotion in which it’s selling the 64GB Galaxy S6 and S6 edge for the price of the 32GB model which translates into a saving of about $80. Same goes for the 128GB model which can be purchased for the price of the 64GB model, that’s a $100 discount off the usual price. T-Mobile’s promotion starts tomorrow and runs through Saturday, June 27th.

No new Galaxy Note Edge with the Galaxy Note 5 this year, according to rumors

Last year at IFA in September we saw Samsung unveil the Galaxy Note 4 as well as the Galaxy Note Edge, the latter has only been released in select markets and that too in limited quantities. This variant has more or less the same specifications as the Galaxy Note 4 save for the fact that it has a curved-edge display. It is widely believed that Samsung will launch a successor for both handsets this September but if rumors are to be believed we might not get to see a new Galaxy Note Edge from Samsung this time around.

Rumor has it that Samsung will only unveil the Galaxy Note 5 at IFA 2015 this September and that there’s no new Galaxy Note Edge handset in the pipeline. The Galaxy Note 5 is said to have a 5.89-inch 2560×1440 pixel resolution display as well as a 4,100mAh battery. Powered by the Exynos 7422 processor and featuring Android 5.1.1, S Pen and 4G LTE support the Galaxy Note 5 is expected to come in at just 7.9mm thick.

The question remains though, why might Samsung not launch a new Note Edge? Does it have anything to do with the larger Galaxy S6 edge model that’s going to be launched soon? It can’t really be said for sure and it’s far from confirmed at this point in time whether or not a new Galaxy Note Edge handset will make an appearance at IFA 2015.

More than 600 million Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 themes have been downloaded so far

Themes support was one of the biggest features introduced on the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge, and it seems to have become very popular with users around the world. Samsung has announced that themes for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge have been downloaded more than 600 million times, with the Avengers: Iron Man theme the most popular in the company’s home country.

Chinese users have taken a liking to the Urban theme, which is a favorite for quite a few of us here at SamMobile as well. The BMW i8 theme has been downloaded a lot over in the U.S., and Korean users have also been enamored by the themes in the Bright pastel color category. Indian users seem to have a different mindset, with Samsung saying that users in the country prefer to use clean and simplistic themes that don’t have too many design elements that can sometimes detract from the experience rather than improve it.

It comes as no surprise that Galaxy S6 and S6 users have received the themes feature well, something we have also noticed with our weekly Themes Thursday section. Quite a few themes right now are too over the top for regular usage, but with Samsung to start publishing themes from third-party theme makers in the near future, the themes collection should become considerably better as time goes by.
