Galaxy Studios help bring Samsung’s vision of connectivity to the world

Samsung has found a new medium to spread its vision of connectivity across the globe. It’s setting up Galaxy Studios in some of the most iconic places around the world. These Galaxy Studios “transport visitors to a one-stop experience of mobile connectivity,” according to the company.

Visitors at the Galaxy Studios can try out the company’s latest devices like the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, Gear VR with Controller and the Gear 360. They can try out those products and get a good sense of how far Samsung’s products have come in just a few years.

Samsung has already set up Galaxy Studios in iconic locations like the Dubai Mall, Westfield Parramatta in Sydney and the Navy Pier in Chicago. The company continues to expand them to more locations across the globe.

Since the Galaxy S8 is Samsung’s flagship smartphone right now, experiences surrounding the handset are among the highlights at the Galaxy Studios.

Visitors have particularly enjoyed the Liquid Canvas experience in which their selfie is recreated underwater in ink, oil or liquid dye as the Galaxy S8 moves over a Liquid Canvas. This experience is meant to highlight the IP68 water and dust resistant functionality of the Galaxy S8.

They can also explore some of the other features of the Galaxy S8 by placing it on an interactive smart table. The table connects to the smartphone via Wi-Fi and acts as a second screen. This provides visitors with an immersive view of the Infinity Display and an in-depth look at Bixby.

Samsung’s 360-degree experiences powered by its Gear 360 camera and Gear VR headset are highlighted as well. There are fitness stations at the Galaxy Studios where the Gear S3 smartwatch is demonstrated.

Samsung Galaxy Studios have welcomed nearly 860,000 visitors so far and they will welcome many more in the months to come.

Nougat now being tested on the Galaxy C5, Galaxy C7 and Galaxy C9 Pro

Samsung has started testing the Android 7.0 Nougat firmware for the Galaxy C5 (SM-C5000), Galaxy C7 (SM-C7000) and Galaxy C9 Pro (SM-C9000) in China, according to Twitter tipster @mmddj_china. It’s unclear when the update will start making the rounds, but based on the firm’s past, we’re guessing it will start rolling out within the next month or so.

As well as enhanced notifications, improved application permissions and a bunch of fresh emoji, Android 7.0 Nougat bundles a multitude of bug fixes and speed optimizations. It’s also said to have a positive effect on battery life, thanks to the introduction of new default power saving options, but there’s a chance Samsung’s removed them.

Galaxy C9 Pro review: Not as pro as it should be

Seeing as the Galaxy C5, Galaxy C7 and Galaxy C9 Pro have all been released in a couple of other regions, we expect the upgrade to make the rounds outside of China. That said, Samsung doesn’t have the best history when it comes to major firmware updates and it’s proved to be quite unpredictable in the past — so anything’s possible.

Samsung is bringing Tizen to even more home appliances

Samsung has been baking its Tizen operating system into its major home appliances, including refrigerators and televisions, for a while now, but a new report out of South Korea claims that it’s planning on bringing it to small-sized products, like lighting and thermometers, as well.

When you take the firm’s recent release of a SmartThings-enabled Connect Home Wi-Fi hub into account, it becomes apparent that the firm has devised a plan to dominate the smart home market: it’s going to use a universal operating system to ensure that all appliances can talk to each other.

It’s a neat concept for sure, but will it work? Probably not. In order to succeed, Samsung will need to provide third-party manufacturers with an incentive to pre-load Tizen on their products; however, with Android leading the market, there’s little reason for them to make the switch.

The report also notes that using an in-house operating system for future products is a lot more cost-effective for Samsung as it won’t have to pay a substantial amount of royalties to other OS developers (cough, cough, Google, cough) whenever it developers a new appliance.

Connect Home is the solution to all of your home Wi-Fi problems

Following in Google’s footsteps, Samsung has launched its own mesh Wi-Fi network. It’s called the Connect Home and ships with an integrated SmartThings Hub, which gives users the facility to connect a whole host of appliances to the internet, letting them automate how they work.

Like most mesh systems, the Connect Home couldn’t be easier to configure. All you need to do is attach one unit to your modem, boot up the companion application on your smartphone, then follow the step-by-step instructions to position your extenders and configure a network name and password.

Each router has a range of up to 1,500 feet, according to Samsung, and multiple extenders can be paired to the main router to extend the range. I live in a three-story house with thick walls, for example, and I’m using a mesh configuration to provide reliable Wi-Fi coverage in every room.

Priding itself on usability, Connect Home also allows users to keep track of their family’s screen time using parental controls, create network access for guests and install the latest firmware updates for enhanced security — all from a simple application that’s available for both Android and iOS.

Pricing for the Connect Home starts at $129.99 for an individual unit and tops out at $279.99 for a three-pack.

Gear S3 frontier update patches major S Voice bug

Samsung released a much-requested update for the Gear S3 frontier on Wednesday. The upgrade has been designed to patch a major bug that resulted in S Voice crashing whenever it was toggled — and from what we can tell, it’s working.

The glitch itself has been running riot since May, which is around the same time the device received a routine maintenance update, leading us to believe a faulty line of code was the reason S Voice was unable to run without breaking down.

Not all customers were affected by the glitch in the same way, though. Some noticed that the performance of S Voice suffered when asking it to retrieve information from the internet, like a weather forecast, but it never crashed.

It’s all a little strange, but it’s nice to see Samsung release an update to fix the issue. We’re just hoping we don’t have to wait too much longer for it to arrive on all compatible units, seeing as it isn’t showing up in the United Kingdom just yet.

Thanks, Marco!

Is Samsung preparing Bixby Voice for a global launch?

Bixby Voice, Samsung’s new voice assistant, was initially released in South Korea with support for the Korean language. After making users in the US wait for a couple of months, Bixby Voice was released for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in the country last month. The US is the only market where Bixby Voice has been launched with support for the English language.

That being said, there are still millions of Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ owners across the globe that have yet to get their hands on this feature. They don’t particularly appreciate that a smartphone which costs nearly $900 still doesn’t let them use one of its biggest selling points.

So is Samsung preparing Bixby Voice for a global launch? The company hasn’t confirmed anything so far, however, an interesting observation has been made. Samsung has updated its official Contacts app today and under the “What’s new” section, it has listed “Bixby English global launching.”

Is this a hint that Samsung is going to bring the English-language version of Bixby to Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ owners across the globe in the near future? Or does it just refer to the US launch of Bixby as the “global launching”?

Let us know what you think about this in the comments below. I’m sure many of you will certainly appreciate if Samsung went ahead and released Bixby for everyone.

Thanks, Abhishek!

PSA: Samsung’s Video app is still alive and available for download

At some point in the last couple of years, Samsung decided that its consumers didn’t need a dedicated app for viewing all videos on their Galaxy device and stopped loading its proprietary Video app on devices by default. But did you know that video app still exists, gets regularly updated, and is alive and kicking on Google Play and Samsung’s Galaxy App store?

Many of you probably do, and now so does everyone else. The app’s available as Samsung Video Library on the Play Store and Galaxy Apps and lists all your device’s videos in one place, with the option to see them all in a single list or categorized based on the folders in your gallery. There’s also a search option, although this works based on file names and is very basic (and, therefore, not useful unless you are in the habit of renaming the videos you capture and store on your device).

If you take a lot of videos on your phone, the Video Library app can be very useful, so go ahead and download it from either the Play Store or Galaxy Apps, or via our APK database. It should be supported on most devices running Android 6.0 and above (although only Android 7.0 users will find it on the Play Store, others have to grab it through Galaxy Apps), and Samsung keeps adding support for more Galaxy phones and tablets through updates.
