Looks like Galaxy S8 Daydream VR support is here, or is it?

Google announced its Daydream virtual reality platform at its annual developers’ conference last year. It announced that Samsung was among the eight companies that would make Android Daydream VR compatible smartphones.

We last heard from Google in May this year when it said that Daydream support for the Galaxy S8 will arrive this summer. The handset should get support for the VR platform soon. Samsung may have already started laying the groundwork for it.

T-Mobile released a new firmware update for the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+ yesterday. Yes, the same update that blocks the ability to remap the Bixby button again. The changelog has now been published on T-Mobile’s support website for both handsets and it mentions “Daydream capability” among the other changes.

The Daydream app can’t be installed directly on the T-Mobile Galaxy S8 from the Play Store right now so the folks at AndroidPolice sideloaded it. The app’s start screen displayed a logo that confirmed the Google and Samsung collaboration for Daydream.

However, the process of setting it up revealed a different story. The app returns an “Incompatible phone” error instead of the usual “Downloading VR components” notification that should have been displayed if the Galaxy S8 really does have support for the platform now.

It seems that even though T-Mobile has mentioned in its changelog that Daydream capability has arrived, the firmware update basically takes care of things on Samsung’s end.

Google may have the final say in when support for Daydream will go live on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. It shouldn’t be too long now, hopefully.

Thanks, Henk!

SamMobile Daily Recap: July 10, 2017 — Galaxy J7 (2017), Galaxy Note 8 and more!

[Poll] Galaxy Note 8 looks gorgeous in latest concept

A fan-made concept, which the creator claims is heavily based on recent leaks, rumors and speculation, has surfaced online showcasing what could potentially be the design of the much-anticipated Galaxy Note 8.

The renders highlight a handset that sports a near bezel-less design, with a 6.3-inch Infinity Display (18.5:9 aspect ratio) sitting pride of place on the front and a dual-camera setup enclosed in a protruding bump on the rear.

More notably, the images depict Samsung’s decision to embed a traditional fingerprint reader next to the LED flash on the back of the Galaxy Note 8, but the firm’s reportedly left some extra space to make the sensor a little easier to locate.

The Galaxy Note 8 is expected to feature an Exynos 8895/Snapdragon 835 CPU, 6GB of RAM and at least a 3,300mAh battery. It should also ship running Android 7.1.1 Nougat with Samsung’s Experience plastered over the top.

Related: Galaxy Note 8 will cost more than $1,000 when it launches in September

As for pricing, reliable tipster Evan Blass believes that the Galaxy Note 8 will be Samsung’s most expensive smartphone to date, carrying a price tag of $1,000 in South Korea and a minimum of $1,100 in other regions.

There’s no denying the fact that’s an awful lot of money to spend on a smartphone, and we’d love to know whether the extortionate pricing will stop you from picking one up — so be sure to cast a vote in the poll below.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Galaxy Note FE global launch could take place this month

As expected, Samsung announced the Galaxy Note FE last week, it’s the refurbished variant of Samsung’s ill-fated Galaxy Note 7. The company has initially released the handset in its home country of South Korea but it hasn’t ruled out a global launch for the device as yet.

According to the latest reports out of South Korea, Samsung has confirmed that it’s only going to sell a specific number of Galaxy Note FE units in the country. An official for the company confirmed to The Korea Herald that Samsung will roll out no more than 400,000 units of the Galaxy Note FE in South Korea.

While it hasn’t been confirmed at this point, the paper’s sources suggest that Samsung might launch the Galaxy Note FE in other markets across the globe later this month. What we do know is that the handset won’t be available in the United States, that much Samsung has already confirmed.

In case you’re curious, here’s everything that’s new with the Galaxy Note FE. The only major change is that instead of the original handset’s unsafe 3,500mAh battery, the Galaxy Note FE has a safer 3,200mAh battery.

It’s essentially the same phone as the Galaxy Note 7 but it’s priced almost 20 percent lower than the original handset. Samsung is selling it for 699,600 won in South Korea or $608.

W2018 clamshell spotted in user manual on Samsung’s website

Last month, we reported that Samsung may be working on a successor to its high-end W2017 clamshell smartphone, and now the handset, which has been dubbed the W2018 and carries the model number SM-G9298, has been spotted in a manual that was prematurely published on the firm’s website.

Unfortunately, the bulk of the material is written in Chinese, but from what we can tell the W2018 will come with NFC, S Health, Samsung Pay, S Voice and wireless charging capabilities. It should also sport two 4.2-inch Super AMOLED screens, a Snapdragon 821AB CPU and 4GB of RAM.

As we said when the device was spotted on TENAA’s online database back in August, it’s a pretty minor upgrade from its predecessor, with the main difference being a souped-up processor, which has led many to believe that it’s a revamped model of the W2017 for the European market.

There’s still no way to tell whether that’s the case, but demand for Android clamshell smartphones in the region certainly isn’t as high as it is in China and seeing is the manual is scribed in Chinese, it seems unlikely that it’ll ever leave the People’s Republic (unless it’s headed to South Korea).

Samsung chief becomes 45th richest person in the world

Lee Kun-Hee, Samsung Group’s chairman, reportedly became the 45th richest person in the world after the company posted impressive earnings estimates last week. The South Korean electronics giant is expected to post an operating revenue higher than Apple’s for the first time.

According to Bloomberg, Lee is valued at $18.5 billion, which is an increase of 44 percent this year alone. Lee owns $12.6 billion worth of shares in Samsung Electronics and a sizeable amount in Samsung C&T as well as Samsung Life Insurance. He was hospitalized since May 2014 after he suffered a heart attack. Lee was placed at the 68th position in the list of world’s richest persons in March 2017. Samsung is South Korea’s largest family run business (also known as chaebol).

Samsung’s earnings saw a peak last quarter, thanks to its strong performance in smartphone, display panel, and semiconductor segments. After the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco last year, the company started diversifying as it didn’t want to depend on the smartphone business alone. Lee’s only son and heir-apparent Jae-Yong (worth $7,2 billion) is ranked 199th, up from 239th place in the previous Forbes list. However, he’s undergoing a trial on corruption charges involving former South Korean President Park Geun-Hye.

Jae-Yong is the vice chairman of Samsung Electronics and has been running the company since his father was hospitalized. The father and son duo are ranked first and second wealthiest people in South Korea. Bill Gates is the wealthiest man in the world with a valuation of $89.4 billion, followed by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos who is valued at $83.9 billion.

Dunkirk movie VR experience released for Gear VR

VR movie tie-ins are a thing now. It’s not uncommon for studios to cash in on the virtual reality trend by releasing short VR experiences of their big productions. You know it’s a big production when Christopher Nolan is involved. His upcoming movie, Dunkirk, will hit the big screen later this month but you can check out a short Dunkirk movie VR experience right now.

Warner Bros., the studio behind this production, has worked with Microsoft, Dell and Intel to create this virtual reality experience for Dunkirk. Practical Magic was brought in as the production company.

While 360-degree VR videos are optimized for HD and 4K media, the production company had to stitch images 40 times that resolution for this VR experience. It was able to do that on Dell Blade servers and workstations that were powered by Intel Xeon processors.

Titled “Save Every Breath: The Dunkirk VR Experience,” the 360-degree short film will immerse the viewer in the world of Christopher Nolan’s new movie. The three tightly woven sequences offer an interesting taste of the movie in which 400,000 Allied soldiers are stranded on a beach of Dunkirk, France while the enemy closes in.

The Dunkirk movie virtual reality experience is now available on Samsung VR. The movie itself opens July 21.
