Galaxy Book S renders leak, offering a first look at the exterior design

Samsung is seemingly developing a new Windows-powered laptop referred to as the Galaxy Book S. It was certified by Bluetooth SIG last week and was also presumably spotted in Geekbench wearing a placeholder name. Now the Galaxy Book S appears to have leaked in renders by evleaks via Twitter.

The notebook looks quite thin and doesn’t seem like it has a lot of I/O ports. A USB Type-C port is visible on the left edge of the device but there is no view of the opposite side, so it’s unclear whether any other ports might be available there. The second port residing next to the USB Type-C connector is likely a power input, not a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Although the full-screen wallpaper lacks any icons or UI elements, it’s evident from the keyboard that this machine is powered by Windows OS. The power button is located in the upper-right corner of the keyboard and it likely conceals a fingerprint scanner that should work hand-in-hand with Windows Hello. There’s also a webcam located above the display.

The leaked render doesn’t reveal anything about the notebook’s internal specifications, but if the previous Geekbench listing is anything to go by, the Galaxy Book S is likely to make use of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 chipset paired with 8GB of RAM. Indeed, this is an ARM-based Windows 10 machine which means that it’s geared more towards power efficiency.

As yet, we don’t have any pricing or availability details, and the renders don’t seem to support the idea of an S Pen being included. But if the Galaxy Book S is planned to succeed the Galaxy Book 2 a year after its release, then it should hit the shelves around November. Have you been using a Galaxy Book? [Poll] Will Galaxy Note 10’s 256GB storage make you care less about the microSD slot?

When we asked our readers if they’d skip the Galaxy Note 10 if it has no microSD slot in a poll a month ago, we saw more than 50 percent voters respond in the affirmative. We published that poll just a couple of days after the first rumor about the possibility of the regular Galaxy Note 10 lacking expandable storage came out, and recent leaks and reports have pretty much sealed the deal on that front. Yes, Samsung is yet to make the Galaxy Note 10 official. Still, it does seem the microSD slot is going away, along with the 3.5mm headphone jack.

256GB base storage a good way to make up for no microSD slot?

Not all is lost, however: It’s said that both the Note 10 and Note 10+ will have 256GB of storage on the base variant. We had discovered signs of a 128GB model a few months ago, but it doesn’t look like that storage variant is on the cards anymore. Samsung has always taken the lead in the smartphone industry when it comes to equipping its flagship smartphones with higher base storage – the company made the switch to 128GB of base storage with the Galaxy Note 9, and it’s not hard to believe it is doubling that with the Galaxy Note 10.

Perhaps Samsung wouldn’t have done it if it hadn’t decided not to put a microSD slot on the smaller Galaxy Note 10 and make it more of a Galaxy-S10-with-S-Pen Note than a proper powerhouse. But it did, and the higher out-of-the-box storage means not everyone will need to use a microSD card. Which brings us to the question we’re asking today: Would the 256GB of base storage make you care less about not having a microSD slot on the Galaxy Note 10?

Galaxy Note 10 accessories break cover along with red color option

Whether we like it or not, the Galaxy Note 10 series continues to be the subject of various leaks prior to its release next week. But the latest leak, courtesy of WinFuture, is less focused on the phones themselves and, instead, it concerns new accessories and color options.

Interestingly, the leaked renders reveal a brand new case design for the Galaxy Note 10, which looks very cool in our opinion. The case has a stripe of transparent glass or plastic running across the right edge of the screen, taking advantage of the Always On Display functionality to give information at a glance. The new cover seems like a very interesting mix between the Clear View Cover and LED Cover.

Red color makes an appearance

It seems that, for the first time, the red Galaxy Note 10 has made an appearance through these renders. We were first to reveal three months ago that a red color option will be added to the upcoming Note series, and now we see a glimpse of it. Likewise, we see the blue color option, as well as pink which was extensively leaked earlier this week.

The red and blue color options are likely to be subjected to limited availability and may not be available at launch in most markets. Furthermore, there is a possibility that the red option will be available exclusively for the smaller Galaxy Note 10, while the Galaxy Note 10+ could get blue as its own exclusive. This may or may not be the case so it remains to be seen next week when the series will be unveiled in New York City.

USB Type-C charger looks familiar

The gallery of leaked renders seems to also give us a preview of the charger expected to be included in the phone’s retail box. By the looks of it, this might be the same USB Type-C charger that’s been previously included alongside the Galaxy A70 and Galaxy S10 5G. It’s a 25W fast charger which should be compatible with both Galaxy Note 10 variants.

The Galaxy Note 10+, on the other hand, is expected to support 45W fast charging, but a 45W charger might not be included in the box. Instead, it will be sold separately and will likely cost 50 euros.

Samsung teases Galaxy Note 10’s Exynos 9825 processor on Twitter

Samsung has posted a teaser on Twitter for the new Exynos 9825 chipset that will power the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+. As expected, the company isn’t naming the chip, but there’s no mistaking what’s being teased thanks to the date mentioned in Samsung’s tweet. Yes, August 7, the day the leaked-to-death Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ will finally go official.

Samsung is teasing both improved performance and a more intelligent new Exynos chip, and it’s the former that most of us will be concerned with, considering the Exynos 9820 in the Galaxy S10 series lags behind the Snapdragon 855 used in markets like the US and China. It also isn’t as efficient, and it’s all because of the 8nm FinFET process the Exynos 9820 was manufactured on compared to the 7nm process used for the Snapdragon 855.

The Exynos 9825 will be a 7nm chip that’s made using a more advanced 7nm process compared to what is used for the Snapdragon 855, allowing higher efficiency and performance. It remains to be seen if the Exynos 9825 will match the Snapdragon 855, surpass it, or still lag behind, but going by the few benchmark appearances of both the Snapdragon and Exynos Note 10+ models, the Exynos does seem to have a lead at least in single-core performance.

But only benchmarks done on retail units will tell us the true story, and we will reportedly have to wait until the final week of August before the retail units make their way into stores across the globe. We will also find out if there’s any truth to the recent rumor of the Exynos 9825 possibly powering the Galaxy Note 10 in the US, although the wait for that little nugget of information won’t be nearly as long.

256GB Galaxy Note 10+ base model might not be launched in India

A table for the Galaxy Note 10 series emerged via Twitter, acting as a guide for which Note 10/Note 10+ color options will supposedly be available in which storage configurations in India. Incidentally, the table mentions only the 512GB and 1TB storage options for the Galaxy Note 10+, suggesting that the 256GB base model might not be launched in this particular market, and possibly others.

This should not be viewed as a direct confirmation that the 256GB Galaxy Note 10+ won’t be coming to India. It may very well be that the source simply omitted this Note 10+ variant or doesn’t have information about the color options reserved for it.

On one hand, it could be argued that Samsung has skipped some storage configurations for previous flagships in certain markets so the company could do something similar for the Note 10+. On the other hand, the base model of a flagship has never been omitted. Only variants with more storage have been excluded in some countries, and doing so with the base model would be new for Samsung.

There is a fair degree of conjecture at this point so do take this information with a pinch of salt, but stick around and we’ll keep you up to speed as soon as we find out more. Bixby Routines turned out to be one of the hidden gems on the Galaxy S10 lineup as far as new features were concerned. The overall sentiment towards Bixby may not be as good as Samsung would want it to be more than two years after it was first introduced, but Bixby Routines is an excellent little feature that everyone will find useful. Based on the If This Then That (IFTTT) principle, Bixby Routines lets you automate various tasks on your phone by defining what should happen if a certain condition is met.

For example, you can set up your phone to start playing music and enable Dolby Atmos as soon as it connects to your car stereo, switch to vibration when you’re in a particular location, enable Always On Display when the charger is connected, or ask it to read your notifications out loud from your most-used apps when you wake up in the morning. Every ‘routine’ can have multiple parameters so the possibilities are plentiful, and since Bixby Routines already has a big list of actions and conditions to choose from, creating routines is a pretty simple and straightforward process.

[Poll Results!] Do you even care about the Galaxy Fold anymore?

Nobody will hold it against you if you don’t. Samsung botched the initial Galaxy Fold launch and arguably missed its “Apple moment.” It wasn’t just that the device wasn’t durable enough. The lack of information from Samsung after the April 26 launch was delayed did not inspire confidence.

There was never any question of the Galaxy Fold being discontinued. We knew that it would return. This was confirmed by Samsung’s mobile boss DJ Koh himself a few weeks ago. Earlier today, Samsung finally confirmed that it will relaunch the Galaxy Fold in September.

It has also made significant improvements to address the issues. The display’s protective layer has been tucked into the frame itself. The hinge gap has been reduced and metal reinforcements have been added underneath the display panel for added protection.

That being said, prospective customers will now approach the $2000 device with caution, more so than ever before. They have seen how delicate it was and may not immediately jump to purchase it come September. T-Mobile has already decided it’s not going to carry the Galaxy Fold anymore. Samsung will really have to go out of its way to convince customers that the device won’t face those issues again.

Results: It seems the Galaxy Fold’s durability issues haven’t completely turned people off from the innovative device. 34 percent of voters say they still care about the Fold but won’t buy it for the price, while 21 percent believe it’s the most innovative mobile device in decades. 27 percent voters said they never care for the Fold in the first place, while 17 percent of voters think Samsung’s foldable phone/tablet is doomed because of the botched launch. Of course, only time will tell if that is going to be the case.

Galaxy J3 (2017) starts getting Android Pie update

Samsung’s Android Pie (One UI) rollout has reached the Galaxy J3 (2017), also called J3 Pro in some markets. The two-year-old smartphone is currently receiving the Pie iteration of Android in Russia and Vietnam. It was launched with Android Nougat back in June 2017.

Galaxy J3 (2017) gets Android Pie

Samsung is speeding up with its Android Pie rollout for its older budget smartphones. The Galaxy J7 Duo, A7 (2017), J7 Pro, A8 star, and several other Samsung phones have received the update in the last couple of months. The Galaxy J3 (2017) has now joined the ever growing list.

The smartphone is receiving a new update in Russia and Vietnam with build numbers J330FXXU3CSG6 and J330GDXU3CSG7 respectively. The new firmware comes with Android Pie as well as the July 2019 security patch. While Android Pie brings tons of new features to Samsung smartphones, not all of them make the cut into every single device. How many of them made it into the Galaxy J3 (2017) remains to be seen.

The drill for upgrading your Galaxy J3 (2017) to the latest firmware is the same as ever. You should get a notification once the update becomes available for your device. You can also manually trigger the update by tapping the Download updates manually option in the Settings » Software update menu on your phone. The latest firmware is also available in our database (Russia | Vietnam) if you’re not willing to wait for the update to reach you over the air. You can download the compatible firmware and manually flash it on your phone.

Galaxy Tab S6 coming to Europe starting August 23

The Galaxy Tab S6 could release in some European markets on August 23 and others on August 30. When Samsung unveiled its new flagship tablet earlier this week, the company simply announced a late August release but no exact dates. But it has now started doing that individually for various countries: The Galaxy Tab S6 will hit retail shelves in the Netherlands on August 23 and in Germany on August 30.

The price tags for the Galaxy Tab S6 will vary according to market in Europe. The Wi-Fi-only variant is priced at €699 and €779 for the 6GB+128GB and 8GB+256GB configurations in the Netherlands, while the LTE variant (with 128GB of storage) costs €779. In Germany, the Wi-Fi model with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage will be available for €749 and the LTE variant will run as high as €899 and come with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.

Yes, the storage configurations are also different from market to market, a theme we’re sure to see in countries outside the European continent as well. As for color options, Germany will get Rose Blush and Cloud Blue while the Netherlands will get Mountain Gray and Cloud Blue. Pricing for the Book Cover and Book Cover Keyboard accessories are set at €69 and €179 in Germany. The S Pen will apparently be a separate purchase as well and cost €59.

European customers getting short end of the stick?

It seems those in the US will be getting favorable treatment as far as the pricing is concerned, with the Wi-Fi-only variant to start at $649 for 128GB storage and $729 for 256GB storage. They will also be able to pick up the tablet considerably early: Amazon lists August 9 as the release date for the Tab S6 in the US, just two days after the Galaxy Note 10 will go official. It’s a good thing the Galaxy Tab S6 has a lot going for it to justify the premium price tags, even though the disparity in cost across the globe is disappointing to see.

Galaxy Tab S6 US release set for August 9, Amazon taking pre-orders

While Samsung is yet to confirm the precise release date for the Galaxy Tab S6, Amazon may have just let it slip. In fact, the retail giant is already taking pre-orders for the new tablet in the US, with the release date being August 9. The tablet is yet to be listed on Samsung’s own e-store though.

Prices start at $650

Samsung took the wraps off the Galaxy Tab S6 on July 31. The latest Samsung flagship features a 10.5-inch WQXGA Super AMOLED display, Snapdragon 855 processor, dual rear cameras, a 7,040mAh battery with 15W fast charging, super-fast UFS 3.0 storage, and a new S Pen. The tablet comes in 6GB+128GB and 8GB+256GB memory configurations.

Samsung has confirmed that the Galaxy Tab S6 price starts at $650 in the United States but no release date has been announced. However, the new Amazon listing reveals that the tablet will be available starting August 9. Amazon is currently taking pre-orders for the Wi-Fi-only variant in Cloud Blue and Mountain Gray colors options. The base model with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage costs $649.99, whereas the 8GB RAM and 256GB storage model costs  $729.99. The Tab S6 also comes in a third Rose Blush color option, but it’s not yet available for pre-order on Amazon.

Rumor: Galaxy Note 10 to come with Exynos 9825 chipset in the US

The latest Galaxy Note 10 rumor from the Twitterverse says Samsung’s upcoming flagship may be equipped with its in-house Exynos chip in the US. Other than the year 2015, which saw Samsung use its Exynos SoC in every market, the company has used both Exynos and Snapdragon chips for all of its flagships, with the latter usually making its way to the US, Japan, and China. However, Samsung is apparently going to use the Exynos 9825 inside the Galaxy Note 10 for all carriers in the US except for Verizon.

There never has been a clear answer to why Samsung continues to put Qualcomm’s SoCs inside its flagship phones for the aforementioned markets. It’s said to be because of the old CDMA technology still in use in those countries for 2G and 3G networks and the poorer CDMA performance on the modems used inside Exynos chips. Stateside, Verizon and Sprint continue to employ CDMA technology, but all major North American carriers are gearing up to drop support for 2G and 3G networks in the next year or two and shift to exclusively 4G and 5G networks.

That means Samsung may not need to keep its Exynos SoCs outside the country for much longer, and it could start making inroads with the Galaxy Note 10 later this year. Perhaps the company could have done it with the Galaxy S10 as well if the Exynos 9820 had been built on a 7nm fabrication process like the Snapdragon 855, but that was not the case. The Exynos 9825, however, will be a 7nm chip and should be able to theoretically match the SD855 in both performance and efficiency.

All of this is just a rumor for now, so we will have to wait and see if Samsung is indeed replacing the Snapdragon 855 with the Exynos 9825 on the Galaxy Note 10. The same source had earlier said Samsung might use the Snapdragon 855+ in the country but has now been told there’s the regular 855 inside the Note 10, so it’s best to keep the proverbial grain of salt handy until everything’s been officially revealed.
