Does the Galaxy Fold work with Verizon and Sprint?

Verizon may have exclusivity over the Galaxy S10 5G but it’s not one of the carriers selling the Galaxy Fold. Samsung’s first foldable smartphone is only available from AT&T and T-Mobile in the United States. This has led many to wonder if the Galaxy Fold will work with Verizon and Sprint?

Samsung doesn’t seem to be selling unlocked units at this point in time. So the aforementioned carriers are the only two options available to customers right now. Samsung hasn’t said anything about expanding availability to Verizon and Sprint.

Does the Galaxy Fold work with Verizon and Sprint?

The Galaxy Fold will be able to work with Verizon and Sprint even if the unit is purchased from AT&T or T-Mobile. The device should have no problem connecting to their networks unless Samsung actively blocks it.

The folks at Droid-life dug through the FCC listing for the Galaxy Fold and highlighted the fact that the Galaxy Fold is capable of running on all major US carriers. It has full support for Verizon’s CDMA and LTE bands as well as Sprint’s. This is the kind of network support that we normally see in an unlocked flagship like the Galaxy S10, for example.

This information is of note since Samsung isn’t listing band/network support on the US site for the Galaxy Fold. It only mentions that the handset works on AT&T and T-Mobile. Since the devices will be carrier locked, it remains to be seen if they will allow Galaxy Fold owners to use them on rival carriers. Both AT&T and T-Mobile do have unlock policies so it may be possible for users to unlock it and then use the Galaxy Fold on Verizon or Sprint after jumping through a few hoops.

Samsung hasn’t said anything about an unlocked Galaxy Fold at this point in time. Given that the phone is already well equipped to run on all four major US carriers, it should be a no-brainer. Interested in picking up the device? Do check out our Galaxy Fold hands-on to learn more about Samsung’s first foldable smartphone.

Watch some big stars get their minds blown by the Galaxy Fold

What do Mario Götze and Millie Bobby Brown have in common? They’re some of the big stars that received early access to the Galaxy Fold from Samsung. As part of a clever marketing campaign, Samsung recorded their initial reactions to the foldable smartphone. It’s safe to say that they had their minds blown by the device.

We can understand why. We were equally impressed with the Galaxy Fold after being allowed to handle it for the very first time. Do check out our Galaxy Fold hands-on for more of our thoughts about this game-changing device from Samsung.

Galaxy Fold is mindblowing

Game streaming superstar Ninja features in this video as well and he highlights the mobile gaming possibilities with this device when on the move. He has worked with Samsung previously to promote gaming on devices like the Galaxy Note 9 as well. Another YouTube superstar Casey Neistat was positively impressed by the Galaxy Fold. He has a long history of working with Samsung as well, including a stint at the Oscars.

American DJ Steve Aoki and Parisian designer/blogger Jeanne Damas were similarly awed by the Galaxy Fold as well. Coisa de Nerd and Unbox Therapy have also been featured for good measure. The verdict is the same: all of them were blown away by the Galaxy Fold.

Sure, it’s a marketing video, so it’s meant to be favorable in every aspect. However, it has to be said, this would likely be the reaction of most people who see the Galaxy Fold in person for the first time. That’s largely because there’s nothing like it on the market right now. That’s also partly because it really is well made and appears to be quite a powerful device.

Samsung will be releasing the Galaxy Fold on April 26 in the United States. We’ll be sure to bring you a full review of the Galaxy Fold in the not too distant future. Tell us, are you excited about buying Samsung’s first foldable smartphone?

Can’t afford to shell out $1979 for the Galaxy Fold? AT&T has the answer

AT&T has started accepting pre-orders for the Galaxy Fold, as part of which it’s offering customers the option to split the $1979.99 asking price into 30 more affordable chunks of $66, debited from their bank account every month. And to make the deal even more tantalizing, it’s waiving its upfront free.

Market rival T-Mobile won’t start accepting reservations for the handset until April 25 and there’s been no word of an installment agreement, so the chance to snag such an expensive device on a repayment plan could be enough to force some of its customers to make the switch over to AT&T.

In fact, it’s been radio silence from T-Mobile as far as tariffs for the Galaxy Fold are concerned. It’s confirmed that the handset will cost $1979.99 and that it — like AT&T — will be offering customers a set of free Galaxy Buds and a protective cover at no extra cost. But that’s all we’ve heard to date.

AT&T is the only retailer customers can pre-order the Galaxy Fold from right now in the United States. Samsung started accepting reservations for the handset in the region last week, but was quickly forced to halt the scheme after demand for the foldable far surpassed its internal expectations.

Simple infographic details all you need to know about the Galaxy Fold

Today is a pretty good day for Samsung fans. They have finally been able to see actual photos and videos of the device other than the handful released by Samsung. We have also posted our Galaxy Fold hands-on and it’s something that you should definitely check out.

As you can probably imagine, there’s a lot of information about the Galaxy Fold to digest. It’s a completely new form factor and pushes the envelope in so many departments. To help you make sense of it all, Samsung has published a simple infographic which details all that you need to know about the Galaxy Fold.

All you need to know about the Galaxy Fold

The infographic lists out the basics. You get information about the 4.6-inch Super AMOLED cover display and the 7.3-inch Dynamic AMOLED foldable display, the pièce de résistance of the Galaxy Fold. Samsung also sets out the details about the six cameras in total that this device has.

As for what you’ll get in the box, Samsung is shipping the Galaxy Fold with a pair of Galaxy Buds and an Aramid Fiber Cover. That’s in addition to the usual suspects which include a charger, data cable, ejection pin, USB OTG connector, and a Quick Start Guide.

Customers in the United States are already able to pre-order the Galaxy Fold. Samsung will release the handset on April 26. It’s then going to be released in South Korea by mid-May before being rolled out elsewhere.

Check out Samsung’s unique marketing campaign for the Galaxy Fold

The Galaxy Fold is a unique device in the true sense of the word. Samsung has never made a device like this before and there’s nothing on the market right now that can really hold a candle to it. Samsung is celebrating the uniqueness of the Galaxy Fold with an equally unique marketing campaign.

The first video that it posted today is of a powerfully-crafted dance performance created by Amy Gardner, a world-renowned choreographer. The company challenged itself to create a marketing campaign which it felt was on par with this product.

Galaxy Fold marketing campaign makes an emotional connection

Samsung finally unveiled the Galaxy Fold to the world today outside of carefully curated press images and videos. Media outlets were finally able to get their hands on the device. As such, our Galaxy Fold hands-on is also up now. Do give it a read and find out more about our first impressions of the device (hint: we loved it).

Pre-orders for the Galaxy Fold are live in the United States where the device will be released on April 26. According to reports, more than 10,000 pre-orders have been placed for the device. That’s an impressive number considering the fact that this smartphone costs $2,000.

The first marketing film for the Galaxy Fold follows a dancer “as she breaks free from rigidity and physical constraints. She moves through a period of self-exploration and into a state of self-realization that manifests in a powerful dance sequence.” That’s how Samsung describes it.

You get to see the Galaxy Fold towards the end, clasped in the dancer’s hand. It’s set to a modern reinterpretation of ‘Tom’s Diner’ from famed artist Santigold. Samsung’s choice of music for recent videos has been top-notch. We particularly liked the choice of Que Sera Sera for the marketing video that showed its vision of the future.

Pio Schunker of Samsung’s global marketing team said that the company did not rely on a “traditional” launch idea which normally focuses on communicating product features. The idea was to effectively communicate with its target audience emotionally. It’s befitting for a category-changing device.

New Good Lock plugins enable screen recording and notification search

Good Lock 2019 was released in early March this year with Android Pie compatibility as the major highlight, and the Good Lock team had also offered details on some upcoming functionality that would arrive with new plugins at a later date. Those new plugins have now been released and are available through the Good Lock app.

Nice Shot enables system-wide screen recording

The first one is Nice Shot, and its primary highlight is that it enables video screen recording across the OS, along with the ability to record sounds as well. There are plenty of screen recording apps available on Google Play and you can also use Samsung’s Game Tools functionality to record the screen in third-party apps, so Nice Shot isn’t offering anything new, but it is an official solution from Samsung. Nice Shot works as an extension of Samsung’s Smart capture feature, and as a result, it first needs you to take a regular screenshot using the volume down and power keys.

Then, when you get presented with the usual Smart capture options such as editing, drawing and taking scrolling screenshots, Nice Shot simply adds two buttons on top. One is for screen recording, and the other allows you to quickly add tags to the screenshot (tags are basically like Twitter’s hashtags and can be used to list all images and photos with a particular tag). Unfortunately, you first take a regular screenshot and then tap the screen recording button to record the screen. This might be deliberate, though, so that apps like Snapchat and Instagram can notify users that someone is trying to take a screenshot of their messages.

NotiStar lets you save and search through notifications

The second new plugin is NotiStar. Android’s notification shade can be quite a mess when you have a lot of notifications pending, especially when you have to expand some of them manually, and NotiStar solves that problem by showing every notification in expanded form in a separate screen. You can search for notifications through this screen, although you have to search for a person’s name or a word from within a notification – searching for an app name doesn’t do anything, so its use is rather limited.

You can, however, set custom filters and keywords and define which apps get included in the search results. And even more useful is NotiStar’s ability to save notifications for a period ranging from seven days to forever, so unless you clear them out from within the NotiStar interface, they’ll be available for your perusal for the selected period. NotiStar can be quickly accessed on the lock screen by swiping up, but, like Nice Shot, you don’t get a quick shortcut to NotiStar outside of the lock screen, so you have to first open the Good Lock app.

Download the new Good Lock plugins now!

If you already have Good Lock installed on your phone, just open the app, look for the NotiStar and Nice Shot options in the list and tap on each to download them from Galaxy Store. If they aren’t available in your country, you can download the APK files from our database (Nice Shot | NotiStar) and sideload them on your phone. Those who don’t have Good Lock installed nor have it officially available in their country can check out our guide on how to manually install it.

Samsung Galaxy Fold hands-on: 10 minutes with this futuristic beauty

The last Friday was a big day for Samsung in the Netherlands as it opened its first Samsung Experience Store in the country. More importantly, the store’s grand opening was the first chance for the press to play with the Galaxy Fold. Samsung held its usual presentation telling us everything that we already know about its foldable smartphone before letting anyone actually touch the device, and I was able to use one of the four demo Folds for about 10 minutes before I had to pass it on to someone else and before they opened the shop to the public.

My hands-on time with the Fold was short, but I came away impressed at the end of it. And that’s despite Samsung telling us that the demo units were all pre-production models running pre-production software and that the final product would be better. First, let’s talk about the design. The Galaxy Fold is thick and quite heavy in the folded state and has a gap in the middle. But, in the folded state, it’s also very small, and it’s easy to navigate the 4.6-inch cover display. The Super AMOLED cover display is responsive and like what you expect from Samsung: bright and very nice to look at.

Of course, the magic starts when you unfold the Fold, and the first thing I noticed is how the thing suddenly snaps open. That’s the hinge in the middle of the screen doing its job; the hinge on the unit I played with had some wiggle to it, but Samsung assured me this would not be the case on the final product. And once unfolded, the device fit very well in my (rather large) hands and I never felt like I’d drop it. One thing I don’t like is how the Fold has a square form factor like the iPad, as you’ll see those hideous black bars when you watch videos. The bezels, however, are minimal, except for the part around the cameras, although I think that will be a non-issue after a few days of regular use.

And now, about that elephant in the room: the folding screen and the crease in the middle that has been talked about in recent weeks. Well, the crease was certainly there on the demo unit, but it’s barely noticeable when you look at the Fold from the front. However, you won’t be able to unsee the crease once you look at the device from an angle when the screen is off. Samsung said this crease would be less noticeable on the final product, and I certainly hope that’s the case.

Something that struck me is how, glassy the screen felt. The Galaxy Fold uses a plastic display, but there’s some kind of coating on top that makes it feel like glass, and I loved that. Also impressive is how the Fold’s display opens to a full 180 degrees. I was worried that would be hard because of the book-like implementation of Samsung’s foldable device, just like an actual book can start to tear in the middle if you try to make the two sides of the book lay completely flat. But there’s no such problem on the Fold, and it feels almost magical to use.

The software also felt polished despite being a pre-release version. I opened the camera on the cover display, switched to selfie mode, and then unfolded the device, and the camera app simply resized to fit the larger screen while staying in selfie mode. I also tried this with the browser, and that worked flawlessly as well. And this device is a powerhouse when it comes to multitasking. You can have three apps open at once on the 7.3-inch screen and change the arrangement of these apps by moving them around. I tested the three-app multitasking by sending a picture from the camera app to the messaging app while also having the browser open, and it all happened without any hiccups.

I wished I had more time to play with the Fold, because it felt like a device straight from the future. I was quite surprised by how refined everything felt for a first-generation product, including the software that Samsung has worked on directly with Google. Seeing a smartphone display fold and unfold in your hands is really something else, and I feel the Galaxy Fold is totally worth the asking price. In fact, I’m regretting my decision to buy the 1TB Galaxy S10+ after my Galaxy Fold hands-on; it’s that good!

Look forward to more Galaxy Fold coverage on SamMobile in the coming weeks, including a full review.

Olixar has unique cases for the Galaxy A80 and its sliding cameras

When Samsung announced the Galaxy A80 with its sliding and rotating camera mechanism, an obvious question came to everyone’s mind: How would cases work with this phone? The top rear part of the Galaxy A80 slides up and the rear camera assembly flips 180 degrees when you want to to take selfies, and it requires thinking outside the box when designing cases for such a device. Casemaker Olixar has done exactly that with two of its Galaxy A80 cases.

The more interesting of the two cases is the “low-profile genuine leather flip case,” which uses adhesive to stick to the back of the phone instead of using a clip-on system like regular cases. As a result, this case doesn’t cover the bottom of the phone; it also doesn’t cover the sides completely nor the camera part of the device. The camera and the sliding top half are left bare in the gel case as well, but the gel case does protect the phone’s bottom and the sides of the device.

galaxy a80 cases

However, neither case offers complete protection, and we’re guessing this limitation will forever persist for a device like the Galaxy A80. Compared to competing phones like the Oppo Find X or the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3, the A80’s camera assembly is rather thick because of the three sensors, and the rotating mechanism further complicates things. Hopefully, the next phone with a pop-up camera from Samsung will have a more case-friendly design.

What do you think of these cases? Does Olixar’s solution look good enough to you, or do you think this incompatibility with regular cases is a huge issue for the Galaxy A80?

Good Lock update brings partial Galaxy S10 notification LED alternative

The Good Lock app’s EdgeLighting+ plugin has received support for the Galaxy S10 display cutout in a new update. EdgeLighting+ adds multiple new effects over the options available in the standard Edge Lighting feature on Samsung’s flagship phones, and now, with the latest version of the plugin, a new Eclipse effect allows you to make the edges of the S10’s display cutout light up for notifications and calls instead of the entire display.

Now, as the title says, this is not a complete alternative to a notification LED. While it works for all apps when the screen is on, the Eclipse effect doesn’t seem to work for notifications from third-party apps like WhatsApp when the screen is off, only for incoming calls and preloaded apps such as the stock messaging app. We’re assuming that’s for battery-saving purposes, or perhaps it’s an underlying limitation that stops third-party apps from using the cutout area for notifications when the device is locked and the screen is off.

The Eclipse effect works for all kinds of notifications when you’re using the phone, though, so it serves some purpose. For using the Eclipse effect, you will need to install the EdgeLighting+ plugin from the Family tab of the Good Lock app (or update it to the latest version if you already have it installed). Then just open EdgeLighting+ from the app drawer, tap Effect, then scroll to the end of the list to select and customize the Eclipse effect. You may also need to separately enable Edge Lighting from the Settings » Display » Edge screen menu on your Galaxy S10.

Good Lock not officially available in your country? Just follow this guide to manually install it on your phone along with EdgeLighting+ and other plugins. Want just the new version of EdgeLighting+? Download the APK here.

Samsung Notes app gets Shared Notebooks feature in the latest update

There are many robust note-taking apps in the market, but Samsung Notes app is perhaps the best option for S Pen fans. The app harnesses the capabilities of Samsung’s stylus better than any other offering in the market, although it falls short of the company’s own S Note app that Samsung Notes replaced.

Samsung is making its note-taking app even more capable in the latest app update to version 3.0.05.13 by bringing the Shared Notebooks feature. As evident from the name, the feature allows Galaxy users to share notebooks in the Samsung Notes app. The process is straightforward and requires enabling Samsung Social features which can be done by clicking on the Shared Notebooks option in the app

While this feature is new to the Samsung Notes app, it is commonplace in the market. Many of the popular note-taking apps already offer similar or better collaboration features. Still, it is a worthy upgrade and makes Samsung’s first-party offering a good-enough option for many Galaxy users. The fact that the app is entirely free also adds to its appeal.

It is not clear which devices and OS versions are receiving the app update. In our case, the update is available on the Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy S10 through Galaxy Store but not on the Galaxy Tab S3. The Play Store version, meanwhile, is yet to be updated for any device, but that should change in the next couple of days. If you haven’t received the update yet, you can try your luck by downloading the APK from our database.

Galaxy A2 Core launches in India for the budget-conscious

Following in the footsteps of the Galaxy J2 Core and Galaxy J4 Core, Samsung has launched its third Android Go handset. This time, however, it isn’t a member of the Galaxy J series. It is instead a barebones model in the company’s Galaxy A lineup.

Being a bottom of the barrel Android Go device, the Galaxy A2 Core isn’t going to win any awards in the power department, featuring a 5-inch TFT screen (540 x 960), a 1.6GHz Exynos 7870 CPU, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable internal storage, a 5MP rear- and front-facing shooter, and a 2600mAh cell.

Priced at ₹5290 ($76) in India, the Galaxy A2 Core is astounding value for money — offering the most boiled down version of Samsung’s Android 9.0 Pie software, as well as 4G and dual SIM slots, to those on a tight budget; while also catering to those who don’t need all the bells and whistles that mid-to-high-end devices offer.

The Galaxy A2 Core definitely isn’t the handset for those looking to run intensive games, though. Android Go runs lighter versions of Google’s software suite to provide a fluid user experience on low-end hardware that would otherwise struggle to run Android, so top-tier applications are off the table.

Samsung’s latest Galaxy Tab S5e ad is a stroke of genius

Samsung has aired a new commercial for the Galaxy Tab S5e, showcasing how its latest tablet can be the centrepiece an IoT-connected household — and if it doesn’t make you want one, we don’t know what will.

As visualized in the minute-long advert, the Galaxy Tab S5e has all the software needed to control the core amenities in your house; but they’ll need to be connected to the Internet in order to do so.

If you haven’t kitted out your home with all the latest and greatest smart tech, the Galaxy Tab S5e is still a worthwhile investment, with its stunning 10.6-inch AMOLED screen and mammoth 7040mAh battery.

You can now pre-order the Galaxy Tab S5e

Samsung opened up pre-orders for the Galaxy Tab S5e in a number of countries, including the United States, on April 13. Pricing for the base 4/64GB configuration starts at a modest $400 (€420).

Orders will start shipping in most regions on April 26, the same date the slate will hit the shelves in select brick-and-mortar stores — so if you aren’t sold, we’d recommend heading over to a retailer to try it out on release day.
