Galaxy J7 Duo Android Pie update rolling out in India

Samsung has released the Android Pie update for yet another Galaxy J series phone. The Galaxy J7 Duo was launched in very few markets and was unique for being the first Galaxy J series phone with a processor that had high-performance cores – it is powered by the Exynos 7884 SoC, an underclocked version of the Exynos 7885 that debuted on the Galaxy A8 (2018). And today, the software on the device is making the jump to the newest official version of Android.

The update is currently out in India, which was the first market where the J7 Duo was launched. It’s a 1270 MB download over the air and brings Samsung’s new One UI (version 1.1) interface. As with other non-flagship Galaxy smartphones, not every Android Pie and One UI feature has made the cut for the Galaxy J7 Duo. In fact, there’s very little to be had in terms of the big features. Other than Night mode and Android Pie’s Digital Wellbeing, it’s all mostly minor new functionality, many of which have been detailed in our One UI (Android Pie) feature focus series of articles.

The update includes the July 2019 security patch and carries software version J720FXXU4BSG7. It can be downloaded on the phone by tapping the Download updates manually option in the Settings » Software update menu. Samsung’s Smart Switch software can be used to upgrade as well as long as you are using Windows or macOS, and we’ll also have the Android Pie firmware up in our firmware database shortly.

Galaxy Note 10 VIP pre-orders include a Limited Edition bundle

VIP pre-orders for the Galaxy Note 10 series are up and running in the Philippines. This was brought to our attention by Twitter user @RigorImpossible, who was apparently invited to partake in the program. The source shared a screenshot revealing that the VIP pre-order program offers three Galaxy Note 10 models, all of which include various freebies. Option A labeled as “Limited Edition” appears to be paired with an exclusive special gift worth P29,999 ($588). The VIP pre-order program offers freebies worth up to P32,700 ($641) and will last until August 4.

Additional models labeled as Options B and C can be paired with various bundles featuring special gifts or store tokens worth P4,000 (7$8) and P3,000 ($58), respectively. All three options including A will be paired with a free wireless charger worth P2,799 ($54).

You can attempt to join the VIP pre-order program in the Philippines and secure one of the listed Galaxy Note 10 bundles by requesting a 4 digit PIN on Samsung’s official website. You should then receive an email containing the 4 digit PIN which will then be used for all of your pre-order transactions. It should be noted that customers will have 48 hours to secure their VIP pre-orders by making a P2,000 down payment ($39).

More Galaxy Tab S6 renders leak, revealing a second front-facing sensor

Another round of press renders depicting the upcoming Galaxy Tab S6 has leaked, revealing an interesting detail that wasn’t visible in our exclusive live photos or the renders that followed. As @ishanagarwal24 points out on Twitter, the tablet appears to be equipped with an additional sensor next to the front-facing camera, although its purpose is unclear. Could the iris sensor be making a return with the Galaxy Tab S6?

There’s not much else to say aside from this. The same color options as before are showcased in these renders, including gray, pink, and blue. The S Pen is also present and sharing the same color scheme as the tablet itself. The back panel carries the AKG logo, and one of the two rear-facing cameras could have an ultra-wide lens but it’s difficult to say for certain.

Given the rate at which the Galaxy Tab S6 has been leaked lately, the tablet might be unveiled along with the Galaxy Note 10 on August 7 in New York City. Preliminary specs include a Snapdragon 855 chipset, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage for the base model, and a 6840mAh battery which is smaller than the Tab S4’s. The slate is tipped to launch along with an optional keyboard cover featuring a trackpad and should become available in both Wi-Fi and LTE flavors.

Check out the evolution of the Galaxy Note series in this infographic

Samsung’s Galaxy Note series holds a special place in modern smartphone history. Its impact on the industry is almost as massive as that of the iPhone in some ways. When the Korean company launched the first-generation Galaxy Note in October 2011, it created a new category of smartphones called Phablets – a portmanteau of the words phone and tablet. Though a couple of other companies toyed with the idea of large-screen phones before, it was the original Galaxy Note that made the idea mainstream and a commercial success, despite unfavorable reviews from tech journalists.

The impact of the Note lineup on the industry can be gauged from the fact that large-screen phones have become so common that the word phablet has lost its relevance. Even the mighty Apple, which once mocked Samsung over ergonomics of its devices, eventually released phones with larger displays to cater to the growing demand.

Since the launch of the original Galaxy Note, Samsung has been releasing a successor every year, with the latest iteration scheduled to launch next month. As the company gears up for the unveiling of the Galaxy Note 10, folks at GadgetDeck have created a neat infographic detailing the evolution of the lineup so far. Not only does the graphic show how Samsung improved the original idea every year, but it also depicts the rapid growth of smartphone technology in the last decade.

Do you remember your first Galaxy Note smartphone? What was your experience like? Do let us know in the comments section below.

Second Galaxy Note 9 July security update rolling out in some countries

Samsung has released a second Galaxy Note 9 update with the July 2019 security patch in some markets. The new update brings software version N960FXXU3CSG3 and is available in Austria, Netherlands, Greece, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, United Kingdom, Switzerland, and a few other countries. The first July security update had software version N960FXXS3CSFC for these countries and didn’t bring anything other than the latest security fixes, but the second update may include some bug fixes.

That’s because the new software version has the letter U after ‘XX’, which usually denotes that some changes have been made under the hood. When it’s an ‘S’, as was the case for the previous July update, it’s usually just a security patch. Hopefully, this means Samsung has fixed the issues some users had faced taking pictures using Night mode, namely the failure of the camera to sometimes save pictures. Naturally, the best way to test this is to take some Night mode photos once the update is installed on your device to see if the error comes up as many times as it did before (or at all).

The new July update for the Note 9 doesn’t seem to be rolling out over the air just yet, so you will have to use Samsung’s Smart Switch software on Windows or macOS to upgrade your phone. Alternatively, you can upgrade by downloading the latest firmware from our database. We’ll let you know once the update goes live over the air and also if we find anything notably new or different on our Galaxy Note 9; you can do the same if you find anything by letting us know through the comments section.

Why you should consider buying the Galaxy Fold (and who)

The wait for the Galaxy Fold is almost over. The phone’s redesign process has concluded and Samsung is now comfortable enough to schedule the Fold’s re-release to September – albeit possibly in fewer markets and certainly through fewer carriers than initially planned.

The main concern right now is whether or not you should buy one. What makes the Galaxy Fold a device worthy of your money? Should you skip the Galaxy Note 10 and wait for the redesigned Galaxy Fold to launch instead? Ultimately, this decision belongs to you (as it should).

We’re excited about the Galaxy Fold’s return, and following yesterday’s official news of its re-release, we wanted to reevaluate and determine what makes it a worthy device. You might not feel the same, but regardless, here are a few reasons to consider buying one. Inevitably, this list also touches on who this device might be for, so if you’re unsure in which camp you reside then perhaps you might have a clearer view by the end.

State-of-the-art technology, finally made reality

Smartphone enthusiast or “tech geeks” who have been following the mobile industry over the past 5-or-more years should be aware that the idea of a smartphone featuring a flexible screen is not new. For many years, as the technology was being perfected, both Samsung and LG have teased us with flexible panels at various tech events. They were featureless, without a chassis or frame, and were attached to simple stands without offering a concrete view of how a final product might look like. They were lacking any practical utility but offered a glimpse of the future.

If you’re not new to the mobile scene then you must already know about this. Countless articles across the so-called “mobile blogosphere” have been written over the years, teasing and speculating when this incredible technology might make it into the hands of consumers. Well, the wait is nearly over, and if you think you’ve been waiting long enough then the fabled foldable screen can finally be yours by the end of the year.

It’s a fresh new form factor, and it’s unique among its competitors

The Galaxy Fold introduces an entirely new form factor to the mobile industry. If you’re one of the many smartphone enthusiasts who have gotten bored of the ubiquitous “candy bar” design that’s been defining the mobile industry for more than a decade, the Galaxy Fold must feel like a breeze of fresh air. And because the foldable form factor as a whole is completely new, it hasn’t yet homogenized. In other words, the Galaxy Fold is unique even among other foldable devices.

It’s probably the best interpretation of a foldable phone yet

Unlike the Royole FlexPai and the Huawei Mate X, the Galaxy Fold carries its foldable screen on the inside. This design choice differentiates it from its competitors, and more importantly, it probably represents the best implementation of the foldable screen concept yet.

In the defense of its closest rival, the Huawei Mate X’s design does result in a larger outer screen when the phone is folded. However, Samsung’s solution might be better in practice because it seems like its foldable screen is a lot less likely to being damaged. Foldable screens are generally not as well protected as standard non-flexible screens because they are not covered in Gorilla Glass or alternative solutions. These panels are simply more susceptible to damage, and the Galaxy Fold takes this into consideration more so than its rivals. It seems more futureproof, and as a result, it might be a wiser investment if you want to be an early adopter.

The practical stuff – it folds! (Hopefully without any issues in the near future)

The Galaxy Fold, folds. This isn’t a revelation, but without spending some one-on-one time with the device itself, you might not fully realize just how incredible it is to be able and turn your smartphone into a tablet in an instant.

If you’re a smartphone and tablet user, the Galaxy Fold technically makes it possible for you to abandon these devices and get the functionality of both from a single product. This is partly enhanced by App Continuity, which allows certain apps to automatically transfer from one screen to another without closing. The early version wasn’t perfect, but Samsung used the time following the phone’s delay to further improve the firmware. Yesterday the company confirmed to have improved the UX with better app compatibility, and this could mean that support for App Continuity has expanded to more apps.

Likewise, if you would like to carry a tablet around but you don’t because it’s not convenient enough, the Galaxy Fold solves this problem. Granted, it could be argued that the Fold’s smaller outer screen is not as large as the panels usually found on regular smartphones, but we think that the Fold is simply greater than the sum of its parts.

The technical stuff – UFS 3.0, great cameras and true stereo speakers

The Galaxy Fold is set to become one of the fastest smartphones on the market thanks to the inclusion of UFS 3.0 storage, which is technically as fast as an SSD for personal computers. It won’t be the first smartphone to adopt UFS 3.0 storage, and the Galaxy Note 10, too, is rumored to make use of this standard, but this doesn’t diminish the fact that the Galaxy Fold should be very fast. It does lack expandable storage, but it comes with a whopping 512GB UFS 3.0 as standard, so you probably won’t miss the microSD slot.

It also packs a great camera setup including a total of six sensors. The main triple-camera combo comprises two 12-megapixel units (one wide and one telephoto with 2x optical zoom), while the third 16-megapixel shooter has an ultrawide lens. Then there are two cameras in the upper-right corner of the large screen. One has a resolution of 10 megapixels and the other is an 8-megapixel RGB depth sensor. Finally, the so-called Cover Camera which resides above the small exterior screen has a resolution of 10 megapixels and a field of view of 80 degrees. No matter how you use the Galaxy Fold, you will have access to one or more cameras for high-quality selfies and landscape photography.

As for audio, the Galaxy Fold – unlike the Galaxy S10 – has actual stereo speakers and sports a separate, dedicated earpiece. In our early review of the first Fold version, we’ve determined that the speakers are loud and the sound quality is fantastic. This should make it a great device for multimedia consumption. The audio package supports DSD64/128 and the phone comes with a pair of Galaxy Buds included in the box.

The cool factor is through the roof

This should speak for itself. If you’re a gadget enthusiast who’s looking a bit more beyond the practical then there’s no denying that the Galaxy Fold is an insanely cool device. And it’s probably a great conversation starter too. It simply looks like nothing else on the market, and if you’ve always been an early adopter of groundbreaking technologies then you probably can’t go wrong with the Galaxy Fold.

The phone should launch in two base colors – Space Silver and Cosmos Black – but in some markets, you should be able to further customize it with different color combinations. This includes Martian Green and Astro Blue exterior finishes, which can be coupled with either a Gold or Dark Silver hinge.

Conclusion

The Galaxy Fold is probably not going to be for everyone, for a couple of reasons. Not only will it be subjected to a more limited launch compared to a regular smartphone, but the price is a bit spicy too. Besides, as cool as it is, the Galaxy Fold had a rocky start, and the foldable concept as a whole – made by Samsung or anyone else – is not yet truly tested. Not everyone will want to risk an early adoption of a (possibly) game-changing, yet expensive device. However, if these things don’t concern you and if you’ve always been at the forefront of mobile technology, or if you’d simply enjoy the functionality of a phone and a tablet in a single convenient package, then the Galaxy Fold has plenty to offer.

Galaxy Watch Active 2 launch gets closer as demo models get certified

The demo models of the Galaxy Watch Active 2 that Samsung will use to show its new smartwatch to the public at retail stores around the world have been certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance, hinting at an imminent official launch. Model numbers SM-R820X, SM-R825X, SM-R830X, SM-R835X were certified on July 24 – the letter X usually denotes a retail demo version of Samsung’s mobile devices, and that means the Galaxy Watch Active 2 may be unveiled in the near future.

And that shouldn’t come as a surprise. Samsung will most likely unveil the Galaxy Watch Active 2 alongside the Galaxy Note 10 at its Unpacked event on August 7, which is less than two weeks away. In fact, the Galaxy Watch Active 2 models that will actually go on sale were certified back in June, so Samsung has been making preparations for some time. And for more proof that the watch is very close to a public debut, one need only look at the real-life photos of the Watch Active 2 that we leaked a couple of months ago and all the official-looking renders that have made the rounds in the last few weeks.

As we had revealed in our exclusive report, the Galaxy Watch Active 2 will come in two sizes: A 40mm version and a 44mm version. Both versions will have Wi-Fi and LTE-enabled variants. Samsung’s intuitive rotating bezel wheel will be replaced by a virtual bezel called Touch Bezel, and the watch will have multiple new health-related features. Those will include ECG and fall detection, although the former might not be ready at launch thanks to the approval it needs to get from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Samsung launches the Galaxy A80 in Brazil, sale starts on August 5

Samsung has announced the launch of the Galaxy A80 in Brazil. The newest and the most premium member of the 2019 Galaxy A family was made official in Thailand more than three months ago. It will be available in Brazil from August 5 at all major online and offline retail stores across the country.

Galaxy A80 arrives in Brazil

Samsung’s unique swivel camera phone will soon hit the streets in Brazil. Featuring a first-of-its-kind sliding, rotating camera system, the smartphone enables a notch and cutout-free display experience. The triple camera setup consists of a 48-megapixel primary sensor, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide sensor, and a 5-megapixel depth sensor.

The camera assembly can rotate 180 degrees to function as the front camera as well. However, Samsung seems to have messed up a little with this mechanism. The camera often gets stuck halfway through the sliding process, at least on the unit we have in our office. Look forward for more on this in our full Galaxy A80 review. In the meantime, you can check out our video preview and hands-on experience.

As for the rest of specifications, the Galaxy A80 features a 6.7-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G octa-core processor, a 3,700mAh battery with 25W fast charging, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of internal storage, and an in-display fingerprint sensor. It, however, lacks a headphone jack as well as a microSD slot.

The Galaxy will go on sale in Brazil starting August 5 for a retail price of 3,499 Brazilian real (~$926). The smartphone comes in Black and Rose color options.

Samsung closes the gap with Xiaomi in India’s smartphone market

Samsung is closing the gap with Xiaomi as the largest smartphone vendor in India. According to research firms Counterpoint and Strategy Analytics, the company registered a significant growth in its market share during Q2 2019. Samsung’s resurgence is driven by the huge popularity of its new Galaxy A and M series smartphones. The Galaxy A10 was the best-selling Samsung smartphone during the April-June 2019 period.

New strategies paying off

Samsung refreshed its smartphone portfolio this year to better compete against Chineses OEMs in markets like India. The company launched a new, online-exclusive Galaxy M series to penetrate deeper into the big online market. It also revamped the existing Galaxy A series to launch a handful of aggressively priced budget and mid-range phones.

Samsung literally launched a phone at almost every price point, and this strategy appears to be working very well. It has already regained a lot of lost ground in the smartphone market in India. Samsung saw a quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) growth of 30% in its smartphone shipments in India, the latest data by Counterpoint shows. Its Q2 2019 market share stands at 25%. Xiaomi was the country’s largest smartphone vendor in this period with a market share of 28%.

Strategy Analytics, meanwhile, estimates Samsung to have a slightly bigger chunk of smartphone market share in India. The firm suggests Samsung’s share to have grown year-on-year (YoY) to 26.3% in Q2 2019. Counterpoint suggested a 4% YoY decline. It is worth mentioning here that the figures don’t match because research firms have their own methodologies.

Samsung also fared better in the feature phone segment. Its share grew from 9% in Q2 2018 to 21% in Q2 2019. In the premium segment, however, OnePlus surpassed Samsung to become the number one in India. Overall, smartphone shipments in India grew to 37 million units in Q2 2019, which, Counterpoint claims, is a new second-quarter record. Strategy Analytics estimates the figures at 35.6 million units.

Galaxy Tab S6 keyboard cover will have a trackpad

It’s already known that Samsung has a new tablet in the pipeline. A new render has now surfaced which shows that the Galaxy Tab S6 keyboard cover is going to have a trackpad. The accessory will be sold separately, as always, but it does seem to have been improved.

The keyboard covers for Samsung’s tablets have always left a lot to be desired. One can only hope that Samsung has listened to the feedback from customers and made some meaningful improvements to this accessory.

Samsung puts a trackpad in the Galaxy Tab S6 keyboard cover

We first leaked the live images of the Galaxy Tab S6 a few weeks ago. Several renders have since been leaked online as well. There will be no surprises when it comes to the design. The groove at the back is a new addition where the S Pen is going to attach magnetically. This also happens to be Samsung’s first tablet with a dual camera at the back.

Naturally, Samsung will position its new flagship tablet as a productivity device. If you do plan to take the Galaxy Tab S6 along as you live the road warrior lifestyle, you’ll most likely need the keyboard accessory. From what we see in this render posted by @evleaks, there’s going to be an actual trackpad, which should improve the user experience. You won’t have to lift your hands from the keyboard to tap the screen every single time, for example. The keys themselves appear to be a bit raised so there may be additional travel which would improve typing accuracy.

A complete assessment of the keyboard’s virtues can only be made once it’s out, though. Samsung is yet to confirm anything about the Galaxy Tab S6’s launch. The possibility remains that it may be unveiled alongside the Galaxy Note 10 on August 7.

Galaxy Note 10 trade-in value chart promises up to $600 for an old phone

Samsung has put up the Galaxy Note 10 trade-in value chart for customers in the United States. It’s being generous with the trade-in values. The company promises up to $600 for an old phone, hoping to make the $1000+ price tag sting a little less.

The company has put up its reservation page for the “next generation of Galaxy,” which obviously means the Galaxy Note 10. These are not pre-orders, mind you, just pre-registrations. Samsung does say that those who register will receive early access to select their phone color and storage options.

Samsung posts Galaxy Note 10 trade-in value chart for the US

The Galaxy Note 10 trade-in value chart provides values for Samsung, Apple and Google smartphones only. The Galaxy S10 series gets $600 and so does the Galaxy Note 9. Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 8 have been assessed at $300. Samsung will also accept the Galaxy S7 for $200.

The iPhone X, XS Max, XS and XR all have a $600 trade-in discount value. Older models like the iPhone 6S can also be traded in for $250. The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3XL get the full $600 while their predecessors get $300 trade-in value. The entire value chart is available on Samsung’s website.

Customers who trade-in their devices will be able to put the value towards the purchase of a new Galaxy Note 10. They will also get a $50 instant credit which could also be used for devices and accessories on Samsung.com. Those who pre-register now will be required to place an order within 72 hours after the device goes on sale. Do keep in mind that making a reservation now will opt you in for promotional emails from Samsung. The Galaxy Note 10 will be unveiled on August 7. It’s expected to go on sale come August 23.
