Samsung might ship up to 40 million ODM phones in China this year

According to South Korean publication ETNews, Samsung’s ODM business approach in China might pay off by the end of the year. The source estimates that out of 300 million smartphones expected to be shipped by Samsung this year, 30-to-40 million units will be manufactured by an ODM.

Meanwhile, the publication also cites research firm IHS Markit who isn’t as confident in Samsung’s results but still estimates that the number of Samsung smartphones manufactured by ODMs will increase to 8% (roughly 24 million units) in 2019, up from 3% last year.

ODM phones may help Samsung regain lost market share in China

News that Samsung might turn to ODMs to manufacture smartphones for the Chinese market first emerged last September. Roughly one month later, the company launched its first ODM device exclusively in China under the Galaxy A6s moniker, and it appears to have been relatively successful. As a reminder, ODM phones are manufactured by companies other than Samsung in their own factories, but they follow Samsung’s designs and carry the company’s branding. They are basically phones outsourced to local companies, resulting in lower production costs and more affordable market prices.

This has been one of the strategies that Samsung has implemented to improve its dismal market share in China, one of the most lucrative mobile markets on the planet. The company faces intense competition from local rivals across all segments of the market and has quite a ways to go before it can claw back a significant share. This strategy will certainly play a role in that.

Assuming that these recent reports turn out to be correct then Samsung’s strategy may have worked, and by the end of the year, the South Korean company might be able to substantially increase its market influence in the Far Eastern country. Samsung reportedly went the ODM route last year to lower manufacturing costs and attempt to make a larger-than-1% dent into the Chinese smartphone market.

Trademarks reveal how Samsung might name the Galaxy A series in 2020

This year Samsung made a slight change to its Galaxy A series’ name by adding a second digit to it, particularly a zero at the end. Therefore, the successor to the Galaxy A5 (2018) became the Galaxy A50 this year; the Galaxy A7 (2018) was followed up by the Galaxy A70, and so on. Now the question is how Samsung will proceed with its naming scheme in 2020, and we may have gotten the answer from a series of trademarks filed with the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office).

A total of nine trademark applications have been filed with the EUIPO yesterday. They aim to secure names such as “Samsung A11,” “Samsung A21,” and all the way up to “Samsung 91.” So instead of having to add the year 2020 in brackets to their names, smartphones belonging to next year’s Galaxy A series should be easier to differentiate from this year’s lineup. At least as long as we assume that the South Korean company will stick to this particular naming scheme. As usual, trademark applications don’t always reveal the true story.

It remains to be seen if Samsung intends to give a similar treatment to the Galaxy M series in 2020, whereby the Galaxy M10, M20, M30, and M40 launched this year would be followed by the Galaxy M11, M21, M31, and M41 next year.

We have already leaked the live images of the Galaxy Tab S6 and the Galaxy Watch Active 2. There won’t be any surprises on the design front. Much has already been revealed about the new features of these devices as well.

Galaxy Tab S6 and Galaxy Watch Active 2 launch date confirmed

The Galaxy Tab S6 is Samsung’s latest flagship tablet. We have previously reported that it will be Samsung’s first tablet with a dual camera at the back. It also comes with a Bluetooth-enabled S Pen which will bring new functionality to the device. New renders offer a closer look at the pink Galaxy Tab S6

Over the past week, the Galaxy Tab S6 has been leaked nearly as much as the Galaxy Note 10. It’s not surprising that the upcoming tablet has now been spotted in a new series of leaked renders once again, so if you’re eagerly anticipating the tablet’s release then these new unadulterated pictures might satiate you for a short while.

The new renders depict the tablet from a few new angles but they don’t reveal any hardware details of which we weren’t already aware. The image gallery only showcases the tablet in rose/pink, which should complement the pink Galaxy Note 10 quite nicely. The device is also expected to launch in gray and blue.

Spec-wise, the renders give a clear look at the same rear-facing dual camera which broke cover in real photos a few weeks ago. Then there’s the color-matched S Pen that magnetically attaches to the back of the tablet in a special groove, as well as a couple of stereo speakers on the bottom edge flanking the USB Type-C port. These fresh renders also offer a slightly more legible view of the secondary sensor accompanying the front-facing camera. Its purpose is not yet entirely known but, presumably, the sensor will be used for authentication purposes.

You can check one of our more recent reports if you wish to take a more in-depth look at what the Galaxy Tab S6 might have to offer in terms of internals specifications. But, in short, the tablet is expected to feature a slightly smaller battery than the Galaxy Tab S4 while employing a newer, more power-efficient Snapdragon chipset which should even things out. Despite, or perhaps thanks to the numerous improvements over the previous generation, the Galaxy Tab S6 is also expected to lose a bit of weight and girth.

All the major US carriers may offer BOGO deals on Galaxy Note 10

As we move closer to the launch of the Galaxy Note 10, new leaks are flooding the market at a frantic pace, revealing almost everything about the upcoming device. The leaks are not just about the device itself but include launch deals from carriers and retailers as well. Case in point is the latest tweet from Evleaks, which contains Samsung’s marketing material for Note 10 deals from major US carriers.

According to these images, it appears that Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile will be offering BOGO (Buy One Get One) deals on Galaxy Note 10 pre-orders (The leaked images don’t mention the flagship model by name, but uses the word DaVinci, which is Samsung’s codename for the Note 10, as a placeholder). We have already come across evidence about Verizon’s BOGO offer before, but this leak suggests the same deal may be available on AT&T and T-Mobile as well. As of now, there is no indication of Sprint offering a similar promotion.

There are still many details that are unclear about this tempting deal. For starters, we don’t know if customers will get one more unit of the same Note 10 version that is purchased or that they will receive a base model for free when they buy a higher-end variant. Of course, it goes without saying that these BOGO deals will require customers to opt for select monthly plans from carriers.

The leaked pictures also contain images of Wireless Charging Duo Pad, Galaxy Buds, and a Galaxy Watch Active 2. While there is no evidence yet, it’s not uncommon for Samsung and carriers to offer discounts on accessories and wearables on purchase of a newly-launched flagship. Hopefully, all these promotions will add up to soften the blow of a $1,000+ price tag for the Note 10.

Galaxy A30s specs: Triple rear cameras and more

Samsung has several “s” variants of its new Galaxy A phones in the pipeline. Devices such as the Galaxy A30s and the Galaxy A50s were spotted on benchmarking websites earlier this month revealing some key details. More details about the A30s, which should be an iterative upgrade to the Galaxy A30, have now surfaced online today.

Triple rear cameras and more

Samsung’s upcoming “s” variant of the Galaxy A30 will sport a triple camera setup at the back, 91mobiles reportsThe handset will also feature an Infinity-V display, the portal added. The regular A30 packs dual rear cameras and a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-U display.

The rest of specs of the Galaxy A30s remain a mystery as of now. However, the Geekbench listing had revealed that it’ll pack an octa-core chipset with 3GB of RAM. It may not be accurate though, as the A30 offers 4GB RAM and “s” iterations are usually meant to at least match the specs of the regular variants, if not better them.

The Galaxy A30’s dual rear cameras include a 16MP primary shooter and a 5MP ultra-wide lens. The A30s is expected to better on these megapixel counts while adding a third depth-sensing camera. In the battery department, the A30 packs a 4,000mAh battery with 15W fast charging support. There’s also a fingerprint scanner on the back panel of the Galaxy A30, which runs on Android Pie-based One UI 1.1.

Samsung has reportedly begun mass producing the Galaxy A30s in India. It could launch in the country by the end of the next month. More details about the handset should pop-up over the next few weeks as we inch closer to the release.

Sprint Galaxy S10 finally gets camera Night mode with new update

Samsung has added several new features to the Galaxy S10’s camera over the last few months. Features such as Night mode and QR scanner were pushed out along with the monthly security patches starting in April. And although we’re at the end of July, many Galaxy S10 users in the US are yet to taste these new features.

Customers of AT&T and Verizon were treated with the improvements along with the June security patch earlier this month. And finally, it has arrived for Sprint customers as well. T-Mobile’s June update, meanwhile, came sans the Night mode and QR scanner features.

Sprint Galaxy S10 gets Night mode

Sprint is rolling out a new software update for the Galaxy S10 series. The update introduces the June 2019 security patch and also includes the new Night mode and the QR scanner feature. The update for the Galaxy S10+ weighs in at 510MB and carries the firmware version G975USQU2ASG8. The Galaxy S10 and S10e are also getting a similar-sized update. Interestingly, the non-US Galaxy S10 units are already receiving the July 2019 security patch. The US units are behind schedule on that too.

Galaxy S10 users on Sprint should get a notification to download the latest update over the air. You can also manually trigger the download from the Settings » Software update menu on your phone. If there’s no update available, it’s best to wait a day or two until it arrives. But if you can’t wait any longer, you can download the compatible firmware for the update from our database (Galaxy S10e | S10 | S10+) and flash it on your phone.

Galaxy A80 Blackpink Edition will be available in Singapore from August 1

Samsung has retained Kpop megaband Blackpink to promote the Galaxy A80. They were present during the launch event and have also featured in commercials for the device. The company has even been offering a Galaxy A80 Blackpink Edition in some markets. It’s now offering the same in Singapore as well.

Samsung will be releasing the Blackpink edition of this device in Singapore on August 1. Customers will be able to purchase it from Samsung Experience Stores and the official Samsung store on Lazada.

Galaxy A80 Blackpink Edition launched in Singapore

There’s nothing internally different about the Galaxy A80 Blackpink Edition. It only offers cosmetic changes. The color is black with a pink frame and matching accents. Samsung is actually offering this as part of a bundle which includes a pair of Galaxy Buds and a Galaxy Watch Active. They’re also decked out in the band’s color scheme.

This is somewhat different from the Blackpink edition released in other markets. That one just came in a different retail box with a Blackpink charging stand and a special case. Samsung has actually switched up the color scheme here which will certainly appeal to the band’s fans. No to mention the fact that they will actually get matching accessories to go with it.

Samsung says that customers will also get access to exclusive Blackpink content on this device. There’s a Blackpink boot animation which comes up when the device is powered on. This boot animation will also be present on the Galaxy Watch Active. There are also curated themes and icons, a personalized home screen photo carousel, and a set of Blackpink character stickers. Customers in Singapore will be able to purchase the Galaxy A80 Blackpink Edition bundle starting August 1 for S$1,198 (US$875).

Deutsche Telekom will offer the Galaxy Fold in Germany

While T-Mobile has given up on the Galaxy Fold in the US, its parent organization, Deutsche Telekom, seems to have different ideas for Germany. The telecom giant very much plans to offer the foldable Samsung smartphone to its customers once it becomes available. The Galaxy Fold will go on sale in September this year.

Deutsche Telekom to carry Galaxy Fold

Deutsche Telekom has confirmed to Notebookcheck that it will offer the new Galaxy Fold to its customers in Germany. Unfortunately, the largest European telecommunications company didn’t share any details about the actual release date and pricing, though the latter has been known for a while now. The original Fold was priced at a whopping 2,000 euros.

The Galaxy Fold’s new release date isn’t actually confirmed yet. The device is in its final testing stage after Samsung made some changes to its design to better tackle the issues that delayed its launch back in April. And even when it arrives in September, it may be limited to select markets initially. Germany is among those few markets where the latest firmware for the Galaxy Fold is currently being tested.

While the Galaxy Fold is finally returning, prospective customers will now approach the device with caution. However, it’s still a niche device and there are plenty of reasons why you should consider buying one. And of course, there are reasons to consider skipping it as well. Which side are you on? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below, or take this poll.

Galaxy Fold release might take place in the third week of September

Samsung has only confirmed that the Galaxy Fold release will take place in September. The company hasn’t revealed a precise date at this point in time. If reports out of Korea are to be believed, Samsung may release its much-awaited foldable smartphone in the third week of next month.

The Galaxy Fold will likely be made available in select markets initially. Even though the device was supposed to be released globally, Samsung might be more cautious with the roll out of its foldable smartphone.

Galaxy Fold release may bet set for the third week of September

Korean news outlets are reporting that Samsung is initially producing between 20,000 to 30,000 units of the Galaxy Fold for its home market. It’s also said to be finalizing the release strategy with local carriers. Samsung is expected to release the Galaxy Fold in South Korea between September 18-20.

The United States and South Korea will likely be the two markets that get this device first. It will eventually be released in markets across Europe and even India as well, where the device has already been spotted twice in the wild.

It’s said that Samsung will release 100,000 units of the Galaxy Fold in the Korean market. This will account for a tenth of the entire production run planned for this device. Samsung has previously said that it will produce a million units of the Galaxy Fold. It’s unclear, though, if the company is going to stick with the same figure now after delaying the initial release and making some big changes.

Samsung has said that it will provide more information about the Galaxy Fold release in September. It also remains to be seen if all carrier and retail partners that previously agreed to carry it will do so again. T-Mobile has already backed out in the United States.
