Work underway for global expansion of Samsung Pay

Samsung’s new payment service was unveiled earlier this year and it first went live in South Korea, just last month it also arrived for customers in the United States. Samsung has said time and again that it’s going to expand Samsung Pay to more markets across the globe, focusing on Europe and China immediately, a report out of China reveals that work is underway at the company for global expansion of Samsung Pay.

The company has reportedly transferred dozens of foreign language specialists from each division to the wireless business division planning team via personnel appointments on October 15, in order to flexibly manage its workforce Samsung does personnel appointments on the 1st and 15th of every month. Prior to being shuffled in the company these employees went through four intensive training programs related to Samsung Pay at the company headquarters in Seocho, this is certainly the first step towards eventual global expansion of Samsung Pay. Samsung is believed to be in final stage of negotiations with UnionPay, China’s largest card provider, a deal will pave the way for its payments service to launch in the People’s Republic.

Report: Samsung Galaxy S7 to be announced in January

We have been hearing rumors about Samsung announcing the Galaxy S7 ahead of its regular flagship launch schedule, as it did with the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+. Today, Korean publication ETNews is reiterating the same; according to the publication’s report, the Galaxy S7 should come out sometime in January in “premium” and “sub-premium” variants, something we exclusively confirmed last month. Google didn’t translate the report well, but it seems to suggest that an announcement could take place on January 19th.

That would be around two weeks before the start of the MWC where we usually see new Galaxy S flagships; the Galaxy Note 5 was also announced two weeks earlier than usual, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see it become the norm for Samsung’s future flagship devices. The report also talks about the S7 employing an ePoP chip which integrates all the important sensors on a single die, which helps in improving efficiency and was first seen on the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge.

The Galaxy S7 is expected to be powered by three different processors based on market, and feature a display with Apple’s 3D Touch-like technology. It will also have a USB Type-C port, and possibly a dual-camera setup with a new 20-megapixel primary sensor. No matter when Samsung plans to make the S7 official, there is still a lot of time for the company to change the device’s features and hardware, and we should be seeing a lot more information crop up in the near future.

Samsung working on robots to lessen dependence on Chinese labor

Samsung has received a multi-million dollar investment from the South Korean government in order to develop factory robots capable of replacing cheap Chinese labor in its facilities. The investment is worth roughly 16.75 billion won, the equivalent of $14.8 million, and Samsung is tasked with producing them because importing them from abroad is extremely expensive. There’s no estimate as to when Samsung will finish producing these robots but the country’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy expects the work to be completed by late 2018. Here’s what the ministry said in a recent statement:

Once affordable robots reach the market and are more widely used, it can lead to the creation of ‘smart factories’ and bring about far-reaching innovations to the manufacturing sector

The decision to replace cheap Chinese labor with robots comes in the context of rising wages in China but also as an attempt from South Korea to become a bigger robotics market. The global robotics business was worth $10.7 billion last year with China being in the lead and Japan following in second, with the US and South Korea competing for the third place. Robots currently account for about 10 percent of the manufacturing process worldwide and that figure could rise to 20 percent in the next ten years.

New Samsung patent hints at 3D Touch for the Galaxy S7

Apple’s new iPhones come with a feature called 3D Touch which offers various functionality depending upon how hard the user presses down on the display. The handset is capable of discerning the amount of force that’s applied in the tap to respond accordingly. Huawei has also brought this technology to its latest handset so it goes without saying that Samsung fans would expect the company to do something along the same lines. A new Samsung patent has been published which hints that the Galaxy S7 could have a feature similar to 3D Touch.

The patent titled Touch Input Apparatus and Electronic Device Having Thereof was submitted by Samsung back in April 2014 and has been published now by the Korean Intellectual Property Office. It’s essentially the same thing with the display being able to differentiate between the amount of force by looking at the corresponding voltage. The patent also shows that Samsung wants to use this feature to make one key perform different functions, for example one key can be used as both a space and a tab key depending upon how much force is applied when tapping it. Samsung has obviously not confirmed anything right now about the Galaxy S7 so fans can only keep their fingers crossed if they want to get 3D Touch the company’s next flagship, we might have to wait a while before we know if it’s coming for sure.

Exynos 7880 and Exynos 7650 processors will be used in 2016 Galaxy smartphones

We recently reported that Samsung is working on a brand new Exynos processor for its mid-range devices and now there’s some more information on the matter. A report out of Korea reiterates what we’ve already said, that the Exynos 7880 is a brand new processor which will be used for Galaxy smartphones next year. It’s most likely going to be used in premium mid-range smartphones such as the Galaxy A series. The 64-bit chip has 1.8GHz ARMv8A Cortex-A72 + 1.3GHz ARMv8 Cortex-A52 in big.LITTLE configuration coupled with an ARM Mali-T860MP4 GPU.

As per the report Samsung also has the Exynos 7650 in the pipeline, based on the 28nm process it’s a 64-bit chip with 1.7GHz ARMv8A Cortex A-72 + 1.3GHz ARMv8 Cortex-A53 in a big.LITTLE configuration and an ARM Mali-T860MP3 GPU. It’s expected that Samsung will use both processors for 2016 Galaxy smartphones, most likely the ones that are targeted towards the mid-range segment of the market.

Samsung will weigh its options before deciding to bid for SanDisk

Global semiconductor companies are competing to acquire SanDisk, Samsung tried acquiring it back in 2008 but withdrew its offer, this time around the Korean company is going to weigh its options before it decides whether or not it wants to bid for the US flash memory maker. SanDisk has reportedly selected an investment back to line up the disposal of its assets with Micron Technology, Tsinghua Unigroup and Western Digital believed to be interested in the acquisition. Samsung is also believed to be a possible candidate but according to reports the company has concluded that this deal won’t generate any significant profits.

Apparently this acquisition isn’t going to create much synergy for Samsung, which already accounts for 40% of the world’s solid state drive market. SanDisk also faces tough competition in memory card and built-in memory markets because Universal Flash Storage is rapidly being adopted, this new standard performs better than eMMC cards, and Samsung is a market leader in UFS. Back in 2008 Samsung bid $5.85 billion for SanDisk, the company adjusted the price it was offering after SanDisk’s share price fell rapidly but the revised offer was not acceptable hence no deal was reached. Considering the aforementioned factors it appears that Samsung will continue to weigh its options and wait till the very end before it decides to once again make a bid for SanDisk.
