Samsung SM-G450 crops up online, could be another Galaxy On series device

The Galaxy Grand On and Galaxy Mega On will soon herald the launch of Samsung’s new On series of smartphones. We’re still unclear about where this new lineup will fit considering these devices feature hardware very similar to existing smartphones; new devices in the Grand and Mega lineups could have simply been called the Galaxy Grand 4 and the Galaxy Mega 3, so the reasoning behind the odd naming is also rather confusing.

Well, to further confuse the plot, it seems Samsung could be adding a third device to the lineup soon after the Grand On and Mega On go official. An unnamed Galaxy phone with model number SM-G450 (and a 5.5-inch screen) was recently imported to India for testing; the Grand On has the model number SM-G550 while the Mega On is SM-G600, making it highly possible that the SM-G450 is another device in the same series. Samsung imported two models: an SM-G450A and an SM-G450V, suggesting that US carriers AT&T and Verizon might be selling the device as well.

If this is indeed another On smartphone, we’re guessing we could also see an SM-G500 somewhere down the line as a smartphone that slots in between the SM-G450 and the Galaxy Grand On. In any case, one thing is certain: Samsung is still not done with its tradition of flooding the market with numerous smartphones, and we can only hope the company will someday see sense on focusing on quality rather than quantity.

Samsung sends out press invites for an event in India, might launch the Gear S2

Samsung has sent out press invites for an event in India, and it is expected that the company might launch the Gear S2 in India. The event is scheduled to happen at 12:30PM IST on October 14 in Gurgaon. However, we are not too sure whether the company will launch the Gear S2 or any other smartphone.

The Gear S2 was unveiled during IFA 2015 last month, and the officials from the company hinted its towards its Indian launch when Samsung launched the Galaxy Note 5 in India. The Gear S2 is the company’s first smartwatch with a circular display, and competes with various Android Wear-based smartwatches and the Apple Watch.

Samsung Galaxy S5 New Edition launched in Brazil, is a rebranded Galaxy S5 Neo

Samsung has launched the Galaxy S5 New Edition in Brazil, which is a rebranded version of the Galaxy S5 Neo. The device has similar appearance and dimensions as the Galaxy S5 Neo, but it is rocking a new processor, the Exynos 7580. Moreover, it has a dual-SIM card slot as opposed to the international variant of the device.

The Galaxy S5 New Edition (SM-G903) runs Android 5.1 Lollipop, and features a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display, a 64-bit 1.6GHz Exynos 7580 processor, 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, a 16-megapixel primary camera with 4K video recording, a 5-megapixel secondary camera, a fingerprint sensor, a heart-rate monitor, 4G LTE connectivity, and a 2,800 mAh battery.

The device is claimed to be resistant to water and dust, but there isn’t a protective flap on the microUSB port as per the images. We wonder whether Samsung has used a technology similar to Sony as the Xperia Z5 lacks a protective flap for its microUSB port and the headphone jack. The device is available in three colors – Copper Gold, Charcoal Black and Titanium Grey –, but currently there’s no word on its pricing.

Galaxy Grand On images and specs leak through TENAA

The Galaxy Grand On has been in and out of the rumor mill quite a few times in recent weeks, and we have had a pretty good idea of its specs thanks to our sources. Images of the actual device have, as expected, managed to stay hidden, but Chinese regulatory authority TENAA has stepped in to help us out in that regard.

TENAA has posted pictures of the Grand On (SM-G550) showing it from all sides, and also listed the entire spec sheet. The device looks rather similar to the Galaxy J2, with the same textured pattern on the back. That is to say it looks rather unappealing, which shouldn’t be surprising as design is one of the first things that gets ignored when Samsung makes a low-cost smartphone.

The specs listed more or less match what we exclusively leaked a couple of months ago – a 5.1-inch 720p display, a dual-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz (this should be an Exynos 3475 chip clocked at 1.3GHz in the final version if our sources are to be believed), 1GB of RAM, an 8 MP rear camera, a 5 MP front camera, LTE connectivity, and 8GB of expandable storage. The phone runs Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, measures 142×71.9×8.5 mm and weighs 140 grams.

The Galaxy Grand On recently got through the FCC, and the certification from TENAA suggests we’re very close to an official announcement. What do you think about the device? Do you think it’s yet another unnecessary smartphone in Samsung’s repertoire, or do you think the Galaxy Grand lineup’s success is a good enough excuse for the Grand On’s existence?

Samsung gushes about the Gear S2′s timeless partners

The Gear S2 is Samsung’s first round smartwatch and it has certainly excited the wearable device industry, the smartwatch touts good hardware and an impressive suite of features which as Samsung points out is complimented by “timeless partners” that provide apps and services to maximize usability and functionality. Samsung emphasized the importance of having great partners pretty early on, it even released the Gear S2′s Software Development Kit before the product was announced.

Joohyung Jeong of Samsung’s Product Planning Team of IT & Mobile Communications Business division said: “We made sure to put in as much time as needed to optimize the applications for the new circular design and UX.” Samsung aided its partners by providing all design resources that they needed given that the new device’s shape requires all apps to be redesigned. The end result is that there are hundreds of apps available for the Gear S2 already but today Samsung is highlighting eight of the most popular. These include Nike+ Running, Twitter Trends, Line messenger, Yelp for Gear, Volkswagen, SmartThings for IoT-enabled smart devices, Kevo by Unikey and Voxer.

New infographics highlight best features of the Galaxy S6 edge+ and the Galaxy Note 5

Samsung today published two new infographics which highlight some of the very best features that the Galaxy S6 edge+ and the Galaxy Note 5 have to offer. The company recently released two new advertisements for both handsets as well, it’s making sure that the devices stay in the spotlight that has shifted a bit towards its rivals over the past few weeks. Samsung won’t be releasing another flagship handset in the near future so it’s imperative that the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+ continue to outperform their rivals in the market until the Galaxy S7 arrives on the scene, and that’s not going to happen before early 2016.

Samsung Galaxy S7 could have a single curved display

We’ve been hearing a lot of reports about the Galaxy S7 lately, including the one where we reported that it might have three versions, each with a different processor. There was one more rumour that claimed that the Galaxy S7 could tout a dual-camera setup. Now, we have a new report from SamsungViet which suggests that Samsung’s next flagship could boast a single-edge display, an interesting concept given that its predecessor has a dual-edge display, and given that the Note 4, one of Samsung’s most famous devices, also features such as design.

Part of the reason why we’ve been hearing so much about the Galaxy S7 is because of the fact that the company made the switch to Agile development methodology, a process which can shorten development time by up to two months. This means that we will be seeing the next flagship far earlier than usual, but in the meantime, reports will continue to flow through. A single curve display would certainly be interesting as it could make use of the features that make this sort of design stand out, while also retaining an ergonomic build.
