The Frame TV refreshed with works from the Royal Collection

Those with Samsung’s elegant The Frame TV are in for a treat: the firm has added a number of new works to the Samsung Art Store, plucked straight out of London’s Royal Collection — including Franz Xaver Winterhalter’s The Royal Family in 1846 and Rembrandt’s The Shipbuilder and his Wife.

Here are some of the highlights:

  • Madonna and Child in a Landscape with Tobias and the Angel — Titian
  • The Five Eldest Children of Charles I — Anthony van Dyck
  • The Royal Family in 1846 — Franz Xaver Winterhalter
  • The Shipbuilder and his Wife — Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn
  • Venice: The Molo with the Prisons and the Doges’ Palace — Antonio Visentini Canaletto

The Samsung Art Store is home to more than 1000 pieces of high-end traditional and contemporary art, curated by several international organizations, like the Tate Gallery and V&A. The Frame owners can subscribe for £3.99 ($4.99) per month for unlimited access to the entire collection.

But why would they need to? Well, The Frame is a rather unique device in the sense that it looks near-identical to a framed canvas; and thus is capable of effortlessly blending into the background by displaying artwork when it’s not in use — making it a must-have for minimalist interior design.

Galaxy A10, Galaxy A20, and Galaxy A30 get a price cut in India

Samsung has slashed the prices of the newly launched Galaxy A10, Galaxy A20, and the Galaxy A30 in India. Originally priced at ₹8,490 (~$122), the Galaxy A10 now costs ₹7,990 (~$115), a price drop of ₹500. The Galaxy A20 gets a price drop of ₹1,000, down to ₹11,490 ($165) from ₹12,490 ($180). Lastly, the Galaxy A30 has received a price cut of ₹1,500. It now costs ₹15,490 ($223), down from ₹16,990 ($245). The new prices are already live on the Samsung India website, Amazon India, and offline retail stores. Flipkart has not reduced the prices of the devices yet, but it is likely to do so soon.

To recall, Samsung launched the Galaxy A10 and Galaxy A30 in India in February, while the Galaxy A20 was launched in April. The Galaxy A10 and A20 are both powered by the Exynos 7884 SoC, coupled with 2GB+32GB and 3GB+32GB memory configurations respectively. The Galaxy A30, on the other hand, has the Exynos 7904 SoC under the hood, and comes with 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage space. All three devices run Android Pie out of the box.

Samsung revamped the Galaxy A series and merged it with the Galaxy J series earlier this year. The company has launched new Galaxy A phones at various price points since then. India already has the Galaxy A10, A20, A30, A50 and A70 in the new A series. The Galaxy A80 is slated to arrive in the country later this month.

Samsung aims to make Galaxy A India’s biggest smartphone brand, with a gross revenue of over $4 billion in 2019. And early signs are promising, as it sold over 2 million units of the latest Galaxy A smartphones within 40 days of launch.

How quick is Samsung’s 25W super fast charging technology?

Samsung introduced what it calls ‘super fast charging’ with the 5G model of the Galaxy S10 this year, finally bringing an upgrade from the Quick Charge 2.0-based fast charging it has been offering on all of its phones since 2014. Super fast charging outputs 25 watts of power and uses the USB Power Delivery standard, which can provide up to 100 watts of power to a device, as showcased by Xiaomi recently. Regular fast charging on Galaxy phones provides 15 watts of power, so super fast charging is a considerable upgrade, but how much faster is it in practice?

That’s what we wanted to find out, and while we don’t have access to a Galaxy S10 5G, we do have the Galaxy A70, which has a 4,500 mAh battery and super fast charging support like the S10 5G. We first charged the Galaxy A70 with the supplied 25W charger – we started charging it when it had 3 percent battery left and checked the charge level after 30 minutes, 45 minutes, and an hour. We then charged it with a 15W Samsung charger from an older Galaxy phone, again starting when it was at 3 percent charge and checking at 30, 45, and 60-minute intervals.

25W super fast charging has a clear advantage

How much faster was the 25W charger? Well, it didn’t turn out to be as quick as we had hoped, but it still made some noticeable difference. After 30 minutes, the 25W charger was able to take the phone up to 33 percent charge, while the 15W charger only charged it to 26 percent. The disparity was quite small at the 45-minute mark: It charged to 51 percent with the 25 watt charger and 49 percent with the 15W charger.

But an hour of charging saw the 25W charger take the lead again, taking the device to 67 percent charge while the 15W charger only charged it to 60 percent. Even the Galaxy S10+ charges to 67 percent in an hour of charging with the 15W charger, but it has a 4,100 mAh battery, so you can imagine how much faster it would be with the 25 watt charger if only Samsung had equipped the standard Galaxy models with super fast charging.

Below is a table with the charging figures if you’re getting confused with all that text. Remember that we started charging each device when it was at 3 percent charge.

samsung 25w super fast charging

Again, super fast charging on the Galaxy A70 doesn’t make as much of an impact as you might expect, but it does help where it matters most: the first half hour of charging when your phone is almost down to zero percent charge. And every little bit matters with large batteries on flagship devices, as top-of-the-line smartphones are usually quite power hungry and need constant top-ups of the battery, making charging speeds a very important factor.

Super fast charging needs to come to more Galaxy phones

When will Samsung make super fast charging a standard on all its phones? Well, one can hope that will happen by the end of this year and that every Galaxy phone from 2020 onwards will come with super fast charging instead of regular fast charging. We can understand the company took things slowly after the Galaxy Note 7 battery fiasco, but it’s high time it started matching the charging tech on its phones with what every competitor has been offering to its consumers for the last couple of years.

What do you think of Samsung’s 25W charging tech based on the figures you see above?

There’s a new update for the Galaxy Note 9 in Asia and Europe

Earlier this week, Samsung started rolling out an exciting new update for the Galaxy Note 9 in Germany — and now it’s being distributed to the masses, with customers in Austria, Cambodia, France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Thailand and the United Kingdom all reporting that it’s arrived on their handset.

The update itself bundles all of the patches baked into last month’s security release, as well as a couple of additional features, including the option to set a schedule for Night mode. The biggest addition, however, is the choice to switch between either a narrow or wide field-of-view for the front-facing camera.

After upgrading, the field-of-view is set to 68-degrees by default; though with the mere click of a button it can be expanded to 80-degrees to fit more in the frame. It’s a useful software tweak Samsung introduced with the Galaxy S10, then later brought to the Galaxy S9 in March, and now it’s available on the Galaxy Note 9.

galaxy s9 camera update

As we noted in our initial coverage, the update does not introduce a Night mode for the camera — like the one found on the Galaxy S10. Rather, the Night mode we were referring to earlier is a core function of Samsung’s One UI user interface, which, when triggered, dims the lights across the entire system to prevent visual fatigue.

Needless to say, the update is being pushed out in stages. To check to see if it’s available for your Galaxy Note 9, head into Settings, navigate to Software update, then hit Download updates manually. Alternatively, you can always download the firmware from our database to flash it on to your unit manually.

First Galaxy Fit e software update is rolling out

Just a day after the Galaxy Fit e, one of Samsung’s newest fitness trackers, went on sale in some markets, it is getting its first software update. At 1.79 MB, it’s a minor update, although it does add an important feature. It’s called Dim screen, and as the name suggests, it dims the screen’s brightness to extend battery life. Don’t exercise on the weekends? You can schedule the screen to be dimmed on Saturday and Sunday, and also specify for how many hours it should be dimmed. Samsung already says the Galaxy Fit e can last for a week, and this should allow for even longer battery life.

The update will also enable the band to show the heart rate icon during exercise, which we’re guessing is something it should have done out of the box, and improve general stability. The update is available for download from the Galaxy Wearable app right now and comes with software version R735XXUU0ASD2. If you have purchased a Galaxy Fit e, just open the Galaxy Wearable app on your connected smartphone, scroll down and tap on About band, select Update band software, and then tap Download and install.

Haven’t decided if you’re going to buy the Galaxy Fit e (or the Galaxy Fit)? Look out for our review of the band in the coming weeks, in addition to reviews of plenty of other devices that Samsung has launched this year.

Samsung expands its AI lab in Canada to bolster research in system semiconductor

Samsung has announced the expansion of its Montreal-based artificial intelligence (AI) lab to the Montreal Institute for Learning Algorithms (Mila). The Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) AI Lab in Montreal, which first opened at the University of Montreal in September 2017, has been moved to Mila to strengthen the fundamentals in AI research and drive competitiveness in system semiconductors, the company said.

Will strengthen collaboration with top authorities

Founded by Professor Yoshua Bengio of University of Montreal, Mila has partnerships with the University of Montreal and McGill University. “It is one of the greatest research centers in the field of deep learning” and will allow Samsung to strengthen collaboration with top authorities in the field. Samsung has been working with Professor Bengio since 2014. The company now aims of working closely with more AI communities in Mila.

The SAIT AI Lab in Mila will focus on developing new deep learning algorithms and on-device AI. Samsung has hired Simon Lacoste-Julien, Professor at the University of Montreal, to lead the research team. The company will be sending more R&D personnel from its semiconductor business to Montreal over time.

Samsung has been stepping up efforts to expand its non-memory and foundry business to once again find growth in the declining chip market. The company recently announced a $115 billion investment plan for the next ten years. Samsung had previously said that it wants 1,000 researchers working on AI by 2020.

Samsung installs another Onyx Cinema LED screen in Malaysia

Samsung has installed one more Onyx Cinema LED screen in Malaysia, the fourth in the country. The latest one has been installed in TGV Cinemas at the new Central i-City shopping mall in Shah Alam. It is a 14 meter Onyx screen, the largest in the world.

First unveiled in South Korea in July 2017, Samsung’s revolutionary cinema screens have gradually made their way into select theatres in 16 countries across the world. The largest, 14 meter Onyx screens, however, are available only in India, China and Malaysia.

Onyx Cinema LED is the future

Samsung has been pitching the Onyx Cinema LED screens to replace the traditional projector-system cinema screens in theaters around the world. Not only do Onyx screens bring larger visuals, they also offer 4K image quality, HDR capabilities, and unprecedented brightness and contrast. Paired with Onyx Sound, an innovative audio solution by Harman and Samsung’s Audio Lab, Onyx screens offer an immersive viewing experience to the audience.

TGV Cinemas at Central i-City shopping mall also has premium, adjustable auto-glide reclining chairs. The chairs can be adjusted to get the best and most comfortable viewing experience, wherever you may be seated. Samsung has also installed charging stations throughout the vicinity of the TGV Cinemas. There are several wireless charging pads as well as USB-powered charging ports around the lounge for you to charge your device while waiting for your movie.
