TikTok artists, Samsung and Billboard want Charli XCX to be your mentor

Samsung is partnering with Billboard — the American music and entertainment magazine — to create a first-of-its-kind competition that leverages TikTok to “find the next unsigned superstar.”

The concept is not entirely new, as a similar online competition through TikTok was launched by Samsung Australia in partnership with Amplify earlier this summer.

This time, however, Samsung is teaming up with Billboard and is inviting music artists in the USA to create and share a 60-second cover song of “Out Out” by Joel Corry & Jax Jones, featuring Charli XCX and Saweetie, and share it on TikTok along with the hashtag #BillboardNXT.

Billboard will select twelve contestants to participate in various challenges and showcase their creativity and live performance skills over the course of several weeks. The challenge videos will be captured with the Galaxy Z Flip 3.

Charli XCX, who helped fine-tune the Galaxy Buds 2, will be mentoring

Billboard will rank the contestants weekly on a custom chart, and the Top 3 performing artists will advance to compete in the Grand Finale, which will be livestreamed at Billboard.com.

Each of the three finalists will be mentored and prepared for the finals by a celebrity. The first Billboard NXT mentor is Charli XCX; the other two mentors will be revealed at a later date.

Charli XCX recently collaborated with Samsung for the development of the Galaxy Buds 2. Specifically, the artist was brought in as an expert to assist in the calibration of the bass boost and fine-tuned equalizer.

Anyway, back to Billboard NXT, the event kicks off on September 28 and will be open to artists in the USA. It’s unclear when the finals will be livestreamed, but more details should be announced over the next weeks. The grand prize consists of: a Billboard cover, a music video, studio time to record a first single, and tickets to the Billboard Music Awards.

Does Samsung care that it doesn’t have enough devices to sell anymore?

The past two years have been unusual, to say the least. The world literally shut down early last year as the COVID-19 pandemic got out of control. Stepping out of the house became the difference between life and death. Many businesses couldn’t recover from the economic fallout and countless people lost their jobs.

Even some of the world’s top companies weren’t immune to the devastating effects of the pandemic. In particular, it upended supply chains across the globe, leading to a shortage of critical components that prevented them from getting their products out to the market.

As the world reopens to a new normal, the supply chains have yet to fully recover, and there’s no better example of this than the global chip shortage. There has been incredible demand for chips over the past year and there’s just not enough capacity to fulfil it.

That’s one of the main reasons why you still can’t go into a store and walk out with a PlayStation 5, why scalpers are still selling GPUs for the price of a kidney, and why some of Samsung’s much-loved devices are nowhere to be found.

Not only does the Galaxy A series include some of the best Samsung phones, but these models are also among some of its best-selling devices. However, the semiconductor shortage has disrupted the production of Samsung’s 2021 Galaxy A models.

For example, even though it was launched alongside the Galaxy A52 earlier this year, the Galaxy A72 remains unavailable in the US. Some Galaxy A models also remain in short supply in other markets across the globe.

There’s also the fact that Samsung chose not to launch a new Galaxy Note flagship in 2021. The company said that the chip shortage was a big reason why it decided to let down some of its most loyal fans this year.

While it hasn’t said anything about the device, chips being in short supply might be a reason why the Galaxy S21 FE has been delayed to the point that when/if it’s launched, it’s going to be dead on arrival.

That’s ironic because Samsung’s reason for launching the Galaxy S20 FE last year was to provide customers battered by the pandemic a near-flagship experience at a lower price. The great response that it received for the device encouraged the company to promise that it would release a Fan Edition version of its Galaxy S flagships every year.

It’s rare for Samsung’s carrier partners to make their frustrations with the company public. So it was surprising to hear CFO Peter Osvaldik of T-Mobile, one of the largest carriers in the US, say that Samsung has “fallen behind” other OEMs on the global supply chain issue.

T-Mobile’s frustrations stem from the fact that a large percentage of its customers tend to prefer Samsung smartphones. So the carrier isn’t happy that it doesn’t have a new Note flagship to sell to them. Osvaldik even mentioned that Samsung’s Galaxy S series devices are also in “very short supply.”

It begs the question why a company that makes most of the chipsets used in its devices, even flagships, doesn’t seem to have enough devices to sell. Could it be that Samsung is prioritizing the foundry business over mobile?

Is it fine with using more of its production capacity to make chips for others during a global supply shortage instead of ramping up production of its Exynos line? Or to supply new Exynos chips to competing Android manufacturers instead of using them in its phones?

Since the finer details of Samsung’s corporate strategy remain a mystery, there are no easy answers to these questions. One can understand that if the foundry business has existing contractual supply obligations then it has to utilize whatever production capacity it has to meet them. Even if that comes at a cost to its mobile shipments.

Samsung sees the foundry business as an engine for future growth. As companies struggle to find capacity at other foundries, Samsung stepping up and accepting new orders during a global supply crunch could help it win goodwill from new customers that might choose to contract its manufacturing services in the future as well.

Let’s not forget that it’s all about money in the end. All of the divisions under its umbrella contribute to the billions that Samsung Electronics makes every quarter. With margins on smartphones already being slim, if Samsung can make more money supplying chips to others when they’re willing to pay top dollar due to a global shortage, does it make a difference if it has enough devices to sell when it ends up making more money?

Samsung shipped roughly 255 million smartphones in 2020, almost 50 million fewer units compared to 2019. The 2021 shipments may come in below that. The Galaxy S21 sales have been poor and as previously discussed, the Galaxy A units remain difficult to find in key markets.

New Galaxy Note series handsets have consistently sold more than 20 million units but we aren’t getting one this year. Samsung is even believed to have cut its Galaxy S21 FE sales expectations by three million units since the delayed launch will have quite a few customers just wait it out for the Galaxy S22.

Granted, the new Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 foldables are selling quite well. They have outperformed all of Samsung’s previous foldable sales to date. However, they won’t achieve the sheer numbers that a new Galaxy Note would have.

There’s no saying when this global chip shortage will ease up. Samsung is investing heavily to expand its existing production capacity and even building a new factory. However, it’s going to be a couple of years before its planned $17 billion factory in the US starts production.

What that means for the future of its mobile business remains to be seen. Will there be improved supply in the coming year? Samsung has some important product launches coming up. The 2022 Galaxy A series is crucial for its competitiveness in the mid-range sector.

The Galaxy S22 series has to recover the market share that its predecessor lost. There are signs that Samsung may have killed the Galaxy Note series altogether. The company is going all-in on foldables and perhaps may even launch a more affordable third model next year.

Perhaps there’s going to be a wider shift in Samsung’s strategy going forward that we’re not privy to right now. Fans can only hope that if they have their heart set on a new Samsung phone, they’ll be able to buy it whenever they want.

Galaxy A52s 5G is available in Brazil in two color options starting now

There wasn’t much Samsung could do to improve the Galaxy A52 5G six months after its release, but the company had done it with the launch of the Galaxy A52s. And now, the refreshed model is available in another market, namely Brazil.

Starting today, September 20, Samsung fans in Brazil can buy the Galaxy A52s 5G in black or white for BRL 3,499 ($656). The phone has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of built-in storage, expandable via microSD by up to 1TB.

Premium features meet one of the world’s best mid-range phones

The Galaxy A52s 5G is one of the very few mid-range phones on the market to boast an IP rating, 120Hz refresh rate, stereo speakers, an in-display fingerprint sensor, Gorilla Glass 5 display protection, and 25W super-fast charging, though it ships with a 15W charger. The standard Galaxy A52 5G has similar characteristics, but the A52s ships with the updated Snapdragon 778G chipset.

The Galaxy A52s 5G also introduced a green color option that replaced blue; however, in Brazil, the device is available only in two color options: black and white. Flipkart may have sneakily revealed the exact Galaxy F42 5G release date

Flipkart is getting ready to launch the Big Billion Days sales event, and the website may have clued us in on the release of the Galaxy F42 5G. A promotional banner posted by Flipkart in anticipation of the “Big Bang Reveals” tells us that a new phone from Samsung is coming to India on September 29! The name of this upcoming device is unmentioned, but the chances of it being the Galaxy F42 5G are very high.

The Galaxy F42 5G will be a Flipkart-exclusive smartphone. Samsung hasn’t announced this yet, but it doesn’t have to. The answer is in the “F” moniker, which always has been a representative of a Flipkart-exclusive Galaxy smartphone. And since the Galaxy F42 5G is the only unannounced F-branded phone that we know of at the time of writing, it’s very tempting to assume that Flipkart and Samsung will launch it on September 29.

But, there’s more. This isn’t the first time we see hints of a September release for the Galaxy F42 5G, as the timeframe was leaked back in August. The end of September now draws near, and the Galaxy F42 5G seems to be coming with it. And since the phone will be a Flipkart exclusive for India, you can be almost certain it will be accompanied by various attractive deals and low EMI offers.

We’ll be talking about those in the future, so stay tuned and feel free to join our Telegram group if you wish to stay up to date with everything Samsung, interact with our community, or just earn some free SamMobile reward points.

If you’re in India, stop! Don’t buy the Galaxy A52s 5G just yet

The Galaxy A52s 5G is an excellent phone. With the Snapdragon 778G under the hood, the A52s 5G is Samsung’s most powerful mid-range phone yet, and it combines all that power with all the features that make the Galaxy A52 and A52 5G two of the best mid-range Samsung phones ever.

But, if you’re an Indian customer, I would advise you not to buy the Galaxy A52s 5G just yet and wait for the Galaxy M52 5G to go fully official.

The reason is simple: Judging by the leaks and Samsung’s own teasers, it seems like the Galaxy M52 5G will offer pretty much all of the best Galaxy A52s 5G features, such as the Snapdragon 778G processor, 120Hz display, and 12-band 5G support. And, judging by existing Galaxy M series phones, the M52 5G will have a lower price tag than the A52s.

And it won’t be the first time that Samsung has launched a Galaxy A smartphone in India only to undercut it with a more aggressively priced Galaxy M series phone a few weeks later. A recent example is the Galaxy M32, which makes the Galaxy A32 feel completely unnecessary. Last year, the Galaxy M31s similarly dwarfed the Galaxy A51 in value and effectively turned the Galaxy A21s into a slap on the face.

We could see this pattern repeat with the Galaxy M52 5G and Galaxy A52s 5G. Now, the Galaxy M52 is not confirmed to have the exact same specs as the A52s. It has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner instead of an in-display one, we don’t know if it has an optically stabilized main rear camera, stereo speakers, and an IP rating, and it’s also not known if the M52 5G will get three major OS upgrades.

And until we find out, I recommend holding on to your money if you were looking to purchase the Galaxy A52s 5G. Make an informed decision once all the information is out, which won’t take long – the M52 5G is currently set to launch on September 28. Snapdragon Galaxy S22 loses to Exynos model in early benchmark

The upcoming Galaxy S22 seemingly got benchmarked online again, and the Qualcomm-powered variant did the honors this time around. The Galaxy S22+ equipped with the Exynos 2200 chipset popped up in benchmarks last week, and it turns out that the Snapdragon model wasn’t far behind.

The base Galaxy S22 variant is listed at Geekbench with a Snapdragon 895 chipset in tow and 8GB of RAM. The chipset has one 3.0GHz CPU core, three 2.5GHz cores, and four energy-efficient cores clocked at 1.79GHz. And, of course, the device runs Android 12, which is what the Galaxy S22 series will ship with early next year.

A couple of possible explanations for the abysmal benchmark results

The Galaxy S22 equipped with the Snapdragon 895 chipset performed dreadfully in this particular Geekbench test run. It scored a lot less than the Exynos 2200 model — by more than half — in both single and multi-core tests. But there might be a few explanations for this.

The first that comes to mind is that the benchmark at hand may have been fabricated. It could be a fake entry, and the device that was benchmarked isn’t actually the Galaxy S22 with the Snapdragon 895 chipset in tow. This isn’t beyond the realm of possibility, so feel free to remain skeptical.

By the way, the Snapdragon 895 SoC is rumored to be manufactured by Samsung on a 4nm chip fabrication process, and could be launched later this year.

Other feasible explanations could be that the Galaxy S22 and the Snapdragon 895 SoC are not yet fully optimized — even less so than the Exynos 2200 models — or that the device may have been benchmarked in extreme battery-saving modes. Therefore, these early test results would hardly reflect the phone’s real-world performance levels at launch. Besides, the Exynos 2200 model didn’t set a very high bar either, presumably for the same reasons.

Samsung may plan to introduce the Galaxy S22 series in January, same as it did with the Galaxy S21 earlier this year. We’ll keep you updated with future developments, and don’t forget that you can get updates and interact with our community through the comment section below and our Telegram channel.

New Galaxy Z Fold 3 drop test breaks our hearts, but not the phone

There’s nothing quite like destroying an $1,800 phone to get the Internet going. Cue this new drop test video from PhoneBuff starring the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and a lot of free-falling. Be warned: it’s going to make you nauseous, especially if you happen to own Samsung’s newest flagship.

On the bright side, the video re-confirms what previous durability tests already implied: the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is a seriously impressive engineering feat. Not least because of how incredibly durable its hinge proved to be.

Striking the right balance between durability and accessibility was presumably one of the biggest engineering challenges in designing that central piece of the Galaxy Z Fold 3. But by now, it’s safe to brand Samsung’s efforts a success.

Could the Galaxy Z Fold 4 outmatch this level of durability?

Case in point: even though the 6.2-inch cover display of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 cracked on its second drop, the hinge itself refused to loosen up. Keeping the flagship’s main display safe and sound throughout the remainder of the proceedings.

Another highlight-worthy result has to do with how the cover display took its beatings like a champ, remaining fully functional even as cracks started showing up all over the place. In effect, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 survived ten deliberately dangerous drops in total. While most of them left a mark on the device (and our hearts), none managed to kill either one of its displays. Some dead pixels and cracked glass were the worst of the visible wear-and-tear.

Ultimately, this is another significant improvement over the Galaxy Z Fold 2 – which wasn’t a badly built device, by any means. What remains to be seen is how can Samsung reasonably improve upon this level of durability next year. Assuming that’s even possible.

Samsung switching to 50MP cameras for its cheap Galaxy A phones?

Samsung is expected to make 5G smartphones cheaper than ever before with the Galaxy A13 5G. We first came to know the Galaxy A13 5G is in development back in late August, but details on its specifications were non-existent at the time. That’s no longer the case thanks to a report from GalaxyClub.

The Galaxy A13 5G reportedly has a 50MP main camera sensor, which is rather interesting. We’ve seen either 48MP or 64MP rear cameras on Samsung’s mid-range phones over the last few years, and the company’s 50MP sensors are so new that they are yet to be used in any of its own devices.

It’s not known which sensor the Galaxy A13 5G will use, but we can assume that it will not offer anything close to the performance of the 50MP camera that’s expected to be present on the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+.

2022 Galaxy A series could focus on improved cameras across the board

The switch to a 50MP camera sensor for the more affordable Galaxy A series phones may not be the only thing Samsung is doing to shake up the mid-range segment. We heard recently that the Galaxy A73 could feature a 108MP main camera, and all 2022 Galaxy A devices are rumored to support optical image stabilization.

Coming back to the Galaxy A13 5G, today’s report also reveals the battery capacity of the device: 5,000 mAh. And that’s pretty much it as far as information about this phone is concerned, though we will likely hear more in the coming weeks and months as we move closer to its launch, which may or may not happen sometime later this year.

Telegram’s feature creep continues with the latest update

After gaining lots of new users ever since WhatsApp’s new privacy policy created havoc in the instant messaging app market, Telegram is doing all it can to make sure those users stick with it by adding new features to the app pretty much every month.

Back in August, Telegram added features such as the ability to have virtually unlimited number of people join your livestreams, download trending sticker packs, new animated emojis, and unread comment counters on channels. This week, Telegram has released another update for the app that makes the user experience better.

Telegram gets better… just like it did last month, and the one before that

Personalization is getting a major boost with Telegram version 8.0.1. The app now allows you to change themes for individual chats, with eight theme options to choose from (and more on the way in future updates). You can also send interactive emoji in chats – clicking on interactive emojis, such as a thumbs up or heart, will “unleash a fullscreen effect,” as Telegram puts it.

Telegram is also bringing read receipts for messages inside groups on par with what you get in WhatsApp. Two tick marks next to a message tell you if at least one other member has read your message, and you can now tap a message to see which group members have seen it.

Finally, Telegram is further improving the live streaming capabilities of the app. Group admins can now record live streams and video chats and share them in the group for later viewing by members who may have missed the live version. There’s the option to record both video and audio or just audio, and the video’s orientation (portrait or landscape) can be selected, as well.

If you use Telegram on your Galaxy phone or tablet, you can download the app from the Play Store. The latest version (8.0.1) should already be available. Also, check out the official SamMobile Telegram channel to get uninterrupted updates about all things Samsung.

Samsung might end up producing Pfizer’s COVID vaccines

South Korean President Moon Jae-in is in the U.S. this week. And while his travel plans largely revolve around the UN General Assembly, Korean media report Moon’s itinerary also includes a meeting with Albert Bourlar, the CEO of Pfizer. That would be one of the world’s top suppliers of COVID-19 vaccines.

Back in May, Moon and U.S. President Biden reached a joint vaccine development agreement between the two countries. One that’s expected to be detailed this week, following a singing ceremony which Moon will attend. Either way, the partnership is at the heart of a $2-billion investment plan meant to position South Korea as Asia’s largest vaccine production hub.

South Korea wants to become Asia’s top vaccine production hub

Unsurprisingly, Samsung is meant to play an integral role in this R&D push. And in this instance, “Samsung” refers to Samsung Biologics, a Songdo, Incheon-based biotechnology unit of Samsung Group. The Korean side of the deal also includes the manufacturing capabilities of SK Bioscience, as per today’s report.

Apart from vaccine production, the chaebol has also been involved in combating the global pandemic on other fronts. For example, it was only last month that it introduced a way for Samsung Pay users to store their digital vaccine credentials on their devices. The feature, developed alongside the Commons Project Foundation, started rolling out globally in early September.

But in order to take advantage of it, you first have to become a CommonHealth user. And judging by the latter’s abysmal Play Store reviews, many are still struggling with getting it to work.

Samsung’s self-owning Galaxy M series phone now coming on September 28

Samsung had revealed last week that it would introduce the Galaxy M52 5G on September 19, but it appears that the launch has been delayed. The smartphone wasn’t launched in India yesterday. The phone’s teaser page on Amazon’s website now mentions that the Galaxy M52 5G will be unveiled on September 28.

The Galaxy M52 5G is quite similar to the Galaxy A52s 5G, but it will probably feature a lower price tag and be a better value proposition as a result. It will feature a Super AMOLED Infinity-O display, a triple-camera setup at the rear, and a 5,000mAh battery. Samsung also claims that its upcoming phone is slimmer than previous-generation Galaxy M series devices.

M52 5G might end up being a better deal than the A52s, except in software updates

Previous leaks and rumors had revealed that the Galaxy M52 5G would feature a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, a side-mounted fingerprint reader, and 25W fast charging. At the front, the smartphone could sport a 32MP selfie camera. At the rear, it could have a 64MP primary camera with OIS, a 12MP ultrawide camera, and a 5MP macro camera.

The device will come equipped with the Snapdragon 778G processor, similar to the Galaxy A52s 5G. It could also feature 6GB/8GB RAM, 128GB internal storage, and a microSD card slot. However, the Galaxy A52s 5G could still lead in terms of software updates. None of the Galaxy M series smartphones have received three major Android OS updates.

The Galaxy M52 5G could be launched in three colors: black, blue, and white. Other features of the upcoming smartphone could include GPS, a dual-SIM card slot, 5G, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, a USB Type-C port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Hopefully the device won’t suffer from the same mysterious problem found in some other Galaxy A and Galaxy M devices.

Google is bringing Samsung-like foldable optimizations to stock Android

Samsung has made various hardware and software-related improvements with its foldable smartphones over the past couple of years. With the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3, the company introduced One UI 3.1.1, which brings multi-column UI to many stock apps and multitasking improvements. Now, it is being reported that Google could bring such improvements with the next version of Android.

According to a report from 9To5Google, Google is developing two Pixel foldable smartphones codenamed ‘Jumbojack’ and ‘Passport.’ Jumbojack appears to be running Android 12. The internet giant reportedly used the device to test various new Android APIs named ‘posture,’ ‘opened,’ ‘closed,’ ‘half-opened,’ and ‘flipped.’ All these APIs point towards a foldable smartphone’s states. The company could be adding UI improvements for such devices to take full advantage of larger displays.

The second foldable device from Google reportedly handles split-screen multitasking like the Galaxy Z Fold 3. However, these new APIs won’t be available for non-Pixel foldable smartphones until Android 12.1. It is still unclear whether Jumbojack is a Flip 3-style clamshell device or a Z Fold 3-like bigger foldable.

It appears that Samsung is at least one step ahead of Google in terms of foldable smartphones. The company has already released three generations of Galaxy Z devices and has made various improvements on the software side. With Android 12-based One UI 4.0, the company could introduce more UI improvements to its Galaxy Z series foldable devices. The South Korean firm is rumored to be working on a Galaxy Z-series tablet with two hinges.
