T-Mobile Galaxy S4 receives new update to fix Stagefright vulnerability

T-Mobile is rolling out a new software update for the Galaxy S4, it’s not a major update which brings any new features to the handset, but it’s a very important update nonetheless. The carrier has finally rolled out the Stagefright fix for this device so it’s imperative for users to download and install this update as soon as it lands on their handset.

Stagefright is the name of a security vulnerability that was discovered in Android recently, it can allow hackers to gain access to a target’s device only by sending a video clip with embedded malware through a MMS message. Google and Samsung have already rolled out the fix but carriers have held it up for several devices, it’s good to see that T-Mobile has now pushed it out for the Galaxy S4. This update moves the device up to baseband M919UVUFOH3 and weighs in at around 15MB. T-Mobile is rolling it out today and it should go live for all users across the United States soon enough.

Samsung Gear S2 will be available from all four major US carriers

A little while back Samsung finally unveiled its new smartwatch, the one with the round design which we have been hearing about for quite some time now. The Gear S2 has now been officially launched, we now know what it really looks like and what it packs under the hood. Samsung has not yet confirmed availability and pricing details for this wearable device because that important bit of information is likely to be provided at IFA 2015. One of the company’s carrier partners in the United States has confirmed though that it will be carrying the smartwatch.

Verizon has just tweeted that it will sell both the Bluetooth and 3G-enabled variants of the Gear S2, it says that details about pricing and availability will be provided at a later date. It’s not the only major carrier in the United States to offer the smartwatch to its customers, SamMobile can confirm that all four major carriers in the country will sell the smartwatch in the near future. Expect to hear more details about pricing and availability after IFA 2015 later this week.

Here’s the difference: Samsung Gear S2 vs. Gear S2 classic vs. Gear S2 3G

Samsung has just unveiled its next-genearation smartwatch, the Gear S2, today to compete with the likes of the Apple Watch, the LG Watch Urbane, the ASUS ZenWatch 2, the Huawei Watch, and the successor to the Motorola Moto 360.

The Gear S2 comes with high-end features such as a pixel-dense circular Super AMOLED display, a rotating bezel and two dedicated buttons for navigation within the UI, and a bevy of connectivity options as well as sensors. However, the smartwatch comes in three variants; the Gear S2, the Gear S2 classic, and the Gear S2 3G, and there are slight differences between these variants.

The Gear S2 is thinner than the Gear S2 classic, but both of them have similar connectivity options and battery capacity. Also, the Gear S2 is targeted towards those who like minimalistic design, while the Gear S2 classic is targeted towards consumers who like traditional watch-like smartwatch designs. Both of them have 250 mAh batteries than can be charged wirelessly and can last upto 2-3 days.

The Gear S2 3G is similar to the Gear S2, but comes with cellular connectivity, thanks to an e-SIM. It comes with a microphone so you can carry out voice calls and even connect to the Internet to receive notifications and all forms of updates. To support this extra form of connectivity, the Gear S2 3G has a larger 300 mAh battery, and Samsung claims that it can last upto 2 days after a single charge.

To look at the differences between these three variants closely, have a look at the comparison table on our specs comparison page below.

Samsung unveils Gear S2 and Gear S2 classic smartwatches with circular Super AMOLED displays

Samsung has finally unveiled its next-generation smartwatch, the Gear S2, today after teasing it during the announcement of the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+. The Gear S2 is the company’s first smartwatch with a completely circular display, and Samsung has focussed a lot on the appearance of the watch without letting go of hardware and software features. Unlike the past few years when Samsung was one of the few brands to experiment in the smartwatch space, the smartwatch market is quite crowded this year, thanks to the grand entry of brands like Apple and LG.

This year, the Gear S2 will be the company’s weapon to compete with the likes of the Apple Watch, the LG Watch Urbane, the ASUS ZenWatch, and the successor to Motorola’s Moto 360. Samsung’s flagship smartwatch will be offered in two variants, the Gear S2 and the Gear S2 classic, with the only changes between them being design and materials, each targeting different tastes and preferences. The 11.4 mm thin Gear S2 is targeted towards consumers who love minimal and modern design, while the 13.4 mm thin Gear S2 classic is for consumers who like a more traditional watch design approach. The Gear S2 will be offered in a dark gray case with a dark gray band and a silver case with a white band, while the Gear S2 classic will be available in an elegant black case with a matching genuine leather band.

Coming to the display, both the smartwatch variants feature 1.2-inch circular Super AMOLED displays with a resolution of 360 x 360 pixels. How is Samsung differentiating the Gear S2 from its competitors? Well, the company has invented a brand new way of interaction with the smartwatch: a rotating bezel, which we exclusively reported about earlier this year. Also, there are two additional buttons, home and back, which helps a user in accessing notifications and applications in a quicker, more accurate, and most importantly, a more comfortable manner. The watches are IP68 certified, so they are dust as well as water-resistant.

On the software side of things, these smartwatches run a Tizen-based wearable platform that is customised to be used on wearable devices with circular displays. Users can view at-a-glance notifications for calendar events, emails, messages, news, weather, and notifications from other apps with ease. They can even type or narrate custom replies using the inbuilt keyboard and the voice recognition system. The Gear S2 can receive notifications and can carry out voice calls, thanks to cellular connectivity. NFC can be used for carrying out mobile payments through Samsung Pay, and the watch can also be used as a smart car and room key or a remote control that can manage connected devices and appliances at home.

Pre-installed apps include S Health, Nike+ Running, S Voice, Weather, Calls, Contacts, Notifications, Messages, Email, Maps & Navigation, Music Player, and Gallery. There’s a Healthy Watch Face and a widget that displays your activity throughout the day. Fitness functions on the Gear S2 encourage users to stay healthy and active, and gives them a 24-hour activity log with activity progress and patters. Auto activity recognition system motivates users to be active and fit.

There are a bunch of watch faces that come pre-installed on the Gear S2 that change the information displayed on the screen depending on time, place, and occasion, and Samsung states that it is working with partners to offer a range of apps, watch faces, and bands helping the users in showcasing their style and mood. The apps will include ones for glancing news, sport scores, stocks, trending tweets, and those that show near-by places and restaurants, through a custom circular user interface.

On the inside, the Gear S2 features a “wearable-optimized” 1.0GHz dual-core processor, 512MB of RAM, and 4GB of internal storage. It is equipped with a bunch of sensors including an accelerometer, a gyroscope, a heart-rate monitor, an ambient-light sensor, a barometer, and a microphone. Connectivity is taken care of by Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.1, and NFC. There’s a 250 mAh battery that can be charged wirelessly using the provided charging dock, and the company claims that the Gear S2 can last upto 2-3 days with normal usage. The Gear S2 3G, as the name suggests, also features cellular connectivity, thanks to an Embedded-SIM (e-SIM), and has a day less of battery life. The cellular variant of the smartwatch will be available through carriers in Samsung’s home market, South Korea, and in North America.

The availability or the price of the Gear S2, the Gear S2 classic, and the Gear S2 3G hasn’t been announced yet, but the watches will be displayed on September 3 during IFA 2015 at Berlin. What do you think about the Gear S2? Do you think that it is equipped enough to defeat the Apple Watch and other Android Wear-based smartwatches from other brands? Tell us what you think in the comments section below.

Samsung will not update the Galaxy Note 8.0 to Lollipop in the UK

If you live in the UK and own a Wi-Fi version of the Galaxy Note 8.0, you may want to listen up as we have some rather unfortunate news for you. Whilst responding to a query on Twitter, Samsung announced that it would not be rolling out the long-awaited Lollipop update to the slate.

No details were given on why the Note 8.0 will not be receiving the update, but we presume it’s due to a lack of demand. After all, the tablet wasn’t exactly a success in the UK when it first launched back in April, 2013, so it would seem that Samsung is prioritising the upgrade for more popular devices as opposed to those that are slowly dying out.

Fortunately for Galaxy Note 8.0 users elsewhere, there is a chance that the Lollipop update may still hit your tablet as it might only be scrapped for the users in the UK, and the South Korean company could have plans to distribute the firmware to other markets, but, of course, we’ll have to wait and see.

In the meantime, if you’re not happy with Samsung’s decision to can the Lollipop update for the Galaxy Note 8.0 in the UK, why not drop them a line on Twitter? If enough people do it, they may reconsider their decision, which they have been known to do on the odd occasions in the past — so it’s worth a shot!

Samsung to demonstrate new sub-titling technologies at IFA

Subtitle support has always been a tricky matter, especially when it comes to live streaming videos. However, Samsung wants to improve sub-titling support on its smart TVs to provide better and more accurate formats for the deaf and the blind as well as support new technologies.

The technology giant recently released a statement saying that they’re going to demonstrate a new HbbTV 2.0 format at IFA next month, which is the first element of the Pilot-A project. You will find the new format’s demonstration at Berlin in the ARD Digital Hall at the IRT and RBB booths, as well as IBC.

So what does HbbTV 2.0 actually do? Well, it’s going to add support for the EBU-TT-D subtitle format, which is for broadband content. With this format, it’s going to be possible to generate subtitles for live streaming, which is impressive and it’s a much-needed feature. Here’s what Mi Young Soo, Vice President (Visual Display Business) at Samsung Electronics had to say about the matter:

In order to support the work of the Hbb4All project and to be ready for this demonstration, Samsung has accelerated its implementation for EBU-TT-D based subtitles, and we are really grateful for the support provided to us by IRT, RBB and all other Hbb4All partners.

Samsung Galaxy J1 Ace to be launched in India soon as its price gets revealed

Samsung’s current cheapest smartphone, the Galaxy J1, is about to get a new variant in the form of Galaxy J1 Ace. The device might be launched in India soon as the retail units are already in stock in some brick and mortar stores. The SM-J110H, which we reported about a couple of months ago, might be released in India as the Galaxy J1 Ace. Manish Khatri, an Indian smartphone retailer, has put up a video on his Twitter profile, and it showcases specifications of the device.

It Galaxy J1 Ace runs Android 5.1 Lollipop, and features a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display, a 1.3GHz dual-core processor, 512MB RAM, 4GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot, and an 1,800 mAh battery with Ultra Power Saving mode. There’s a 5-megapixel primary camera and a 2-megapixel secondary camera. It’s a dual-SIM smartphone that will retail for with a price tag of INR 6,400 (~ $98) but doesn’t feature LTE connectivity as it relies on HSPA+ and Wi-Fi b/g/n for connecting to the Internet.

Samsung hasn’t announced the Galaxy J1 Ace officially, but we think that the announcement might happen soon as the device is ready for sale. If you want better specifications, you might want to wait for the Galaxy J2, which features a 4.7-inch display, a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 1GB RAM, and Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.

Inserted your Galaxy Note 5′s S-Pen backwards? Here’s how you can fix it!

Pengate has been a widely debated topic these days, and while it is indeed a design issue, it was blown out of proportion with all the media coverage. As you know, inserting the S-Pen backwards breaks your Galaxy Note 5. Samsung has provided a simple and decisive response to this issue a while back, but if you happen to have broken your Galaxy Note 5 by inserting your S-Pen backwards then don’t worry, there’s a way to fix it, although you should be very careful.

How2Tech has recently published a video showing how to fix a wrongly inserted S-Pen in the Galaxy Note 5, and the solution is rather simple: you need to insert a sheet of paper into the hole which you will use to pull the pen out. The video takes you through the whole process in the detail as there’s a catch with the clicking of the pen, but it’s pretty easy.

It goes without saying that this is a pretty major design flaw, but it seems that you can fix it pretty easily, and jamming it there in the first place is pretty difficult. The S-Pen has become iconic in the past few years and it’s what makes the Note series good. Do you think this scandal is no big deal, or is it something that we shouldn’t be seeing in the fifth generation of the Note series?

FCC listing reveals Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic

Two new models just passed the FCC with the model names SM-R720 and SM-R732 which could be the Gear S2 and the Gear S2 Classic. This is Samsung’s upcoming smartwatch with a circular form factor and a Super AMOLED panel which has a resolution of 360×360 pixels. The device will be powered by an Exynos 3472 SoC and 768MB of RAM along with a 250 mAh battery and 4GB of native storage. The FCC listing doesn’t reveal a lot of info hardware-wise but the fact that we’re seeing these listings suggests that we could see it on the market pretty soon. We expect the smartwatch to be unveiled next month at IFA, along with many other revolutionary gadgets.

There are many reasons to be excited for the Gear S2, and one of them is the elegant design. This is Samsung’s first circular smartwatch and the tech company could be onto something much bigger by using the IoT to interconnect their devices. With this project at hand you could basically use the Gear S2 to control various other electronics in your home.

Samsung trademarks Gear S2 Classic in South Korea

Earlier this month at the event for the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+ Samsung confirmed that its much awaited round smartwatch is called the Gear S2 and that it will be formally unveiled next month at IFA 2015. There had been whispers previously of the Gear S2 Classic but Samsung didn’t say anything about it during the event, the company’s trademark application for “Gear S2 Classic” has been spotted which makes it highly likely that there will be two variants of the upcoming wearable device.

Samsung did provide a hint at two possible variants of the upcoming smartwatch in the Lookbook it released recently which teased the Gear S2′s design, and the fact that the name Gear S2 Classic has already been discovered in the source code of Samsung’s website. This trademark application from South Korea serves as more evidence but unfortunately didn’t reveal much about the differences between these two models, we’ll have to wait until IFA 2015 to find out for sure.

This could be a preliminary list of Samsung devices getting Android Marshmallow

Wondering which Samsung smartphones and tablets will be receiving the Android 6.0 – aka Marshmallow – update? The folks over at SlashGear seem to have an answer from the Korean manufacturer itself and have published a list of devices that should be making the jump to Marshmallow. Naturally, the list has all the flagship smartphones from the last year and a half, including the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, and the Galaxy Note 4.

The Galaxy S5 isn’t part of the list, but it will most likely make the cut considering all Samsung flagships have gotten at least two major Android upgrades. Also, Android 6.0 doesn’t really have any feature that would be restricted by the S5′s hardware, so we see no reason why the Korean manufacturer wouldn’t bring the new version of the OS to its 2014 Galaxy S flagship.

Anyway, here’s the list of devices eligible for Marshmallow according to SlashGear:

  • Galaxy Note 5
  • Galaxy S6 Edge+
  • Galaxy S6 Edge
  • Galaxy S6
  • Galaxy S6 Duos
  • Galaxy Note 4
  • Galaxy Note 4 Duos
  • Galaxy Note Edge
  • Galaxy Tab A
  • Galaxy Alpha

Keep in mind that this list should by no means be final, and Samsung will likely make changes to its plans in the future. Most importantly, we should see a couple of mid-range and even budget smartphones getting Android 6.0, so don’t take this information as the final word just yet.

Samsung inches closer to Intel in the semiconductor business

Samsung is focussing heavily on its semiconductor business as profits from the company’s mobile device business are declining. The South Korean semiconductor giant even narrowed the gap with Intel, the world’s largest semiconductor chip maker, in terms of sales.

According to a market research firm IHS iSuppli, Samsung turned over $10.366 billion in the second quarter of 2015, representing 12 percent of the global semiconductor market. On the other hand, Intel posted $11.797 billion in sales with a global market share of 13.6 percent. This leaves a gap of just 1.6 percent marketshare between these two semiconductor giants, and this is the first time this gap is in the range of 1 percent.

This is the first time that Samsung has posted sales worth over $10 billion, becoming the second semiconductor company to surpass that number after Intel. These semiconductor sales include memory as well as non-memory semiconductor chipsets. The gap between these two companies was 6.9 percent in 2011, 6.0 percent 2012, 4.3 percent in 2013, and 3.4 percent in 2014. Samsung’s marketshare increased by 0.8 percent in Q2 2015 while Intel’s grew by 0.3 percent.

SK Hynix now holds a market share of 4.9 percent, and the company has defeated Qualcomm, which is the world’s largest mobile chipset maker. Starting this year, Samsung has increased the use of its homegrown Exynos chipsets in its smartphones, tablets, and wearables.

With new iPhones around the corner Samsung sweetens the deal for ‘Test Drive’ customers

You might have heard by now that Apple has sent invites for an event on September 9 where it’s most likely going to unveil the next generation iPhone, the device that will prove to be tough competition for Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+. Samsung is making a preemptive strike of sorts by further sweetening the deal for its “Test Drive” customers, in case you’re unaware Samsung recently launched the Test Drive promotion for iPhone users in the US allowing them to take the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 edge and the Galaxy S6 edge+ out for a spin at no charge. This promotion was well received and Samsung soon ran out of phones to ship.

Those who take part in this promotion and decide to purchase the Samsung device after their 30 days are up they will now receive $100 in Google Play credit which can be put towards the purchase of apps, games, books and other media content from the Play Store. Samsung will also provide them with another $100 if they trade-in the iPhone with their carrier or a retailer. Customers who are in the program need to visit Samsung’s promotions page when they’ve decided to purchase the device, they will need to enter the email they used to sign up for this program, answer a couple of survey questions and then fill in purchase details accompanied by a photo of the receipt as proof of purchase. Samsung will then email them a code for $100 Google Play credit, those who trade-in their iPhone will receive a $100 cheque from Samsung in the mail as well. That’s a $200 value combined, what new iPhones?

Samsung wants to remind you that its new flagships feature even faster wired and wireless charging

Both flagships that Samsung released earlier this year, the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge, come with wired fast charging and support wireless charging out of the box. Those devices don’t support fast wireless charging though and that’s one major upgrade that the company’s new flagships bring. Just in case you weren’t paying enough attention when Samsung was listing all of the features during the event, the company would like to remind you that both the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ feature even faster wired as well as wireless charging.

Samsung improved upon the fast wired charging feature of the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge by creating AFC or adaptive fast charging which enables the charger to juice up the device using higher voltage. Thus the charger discharges more power at a faster pace which is then received by the device battery and properly stored cell by cell to further speed up the charging process. All of this means that the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+ can be fully charged up in just 90 minutes despite the fact that they have 3,000mAh batteries. The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge require 180 to charge fully wirelessly but with Samsung’s new wireless charging pad the latest flagships can be juiced up wirelessly to full in about 120 minutes, that’s shaving a full hour off the charging time. An impressive feat for sure.

Samsung Galaxy Mega On (SM-G600) specs revealed by AnTuTu benchmark

We shared exclusive details on the specifications of the upcoming Galaxy Grand On and Galaxy Mega On, and the latter has now shown up on the AnTuTu benchmark database, which reiterates the specs that were confirmed by our insiders. The device that appeared on the benchmark has the model number SM-G6000, which means it’s the Chinese variant that was being tested.

The specs listed on AnTuTu include an HD display resolution, a Snapdragon 410 processor, 1GB of RAM, 13-megapixel and 5-megapixel rear and front cameras, 8GB of internal storage, and Android 5.1.1. Save for the RAM, which we believe will be 1.5GB on the retail unit, all these specs are the same as the ones we reported yesterday. The leaked benchmark doesn’t tell us anything about the Mega On’s launch time frame, unfortunately, so we are still in the dark about when we will see Samsung’s frankly unnecessary new Mega smartphone in an official capacity.

Exclusive: Galaxy Note 5 could come to India, Europe might not get it anytime soon

We all know the Galaxy Note 5 will launch in a limited number of markets, but Samsung hasn’t individually pointed out countries the phone won’t be available in. For the Indian market, Samsung has only announced the Galaxy S6 edge+, but it’s possible the Galaxy Note 5 could also make it to the country sooner or later.

We have come across test firmware for the Indian variant with a build date of August (the build version is N920GDDU1AOH2, where H is for August), and if work on the software is currently in progress, there’s a high chance it’s a result of Samsung’s plans to launch the device in India. Furthermore, Samsung India told us that it cannot confirm nor deny anything at this point, which is another good indication that the company is planning to release the Note 5 at some point in the near future and is simply unwilling to say anything on the matter for now.

As for European consumers, we don’t think they will have the chance of buying the Note 5 officially anytime soon, as the last firmware for the European model is from June (build N920FXXE0AOFT, with F standing for the sixth month of the year.) This doesn’t imply that a launch will not happen at all, but it’s highly likely Samsung will be waiting at least until next year before expanding the availability of its fifth-generation Note flagship to Europe.

Samsung installs solar-based mobile charging stations in India

Samsung has installed solar-based mobile charging stations in Bengaluru, India. Samsung has installed such charging stations in front of the company’s Smart Cafe retail outlets where anyone can charge their mobile phones for free. The company stated that these “first-of-its-kind in India” charging facilities require very less maintenance and the 300 KW power that it generates is enough to charge over 20 mobile phones everyday.

Even though this doesn’t appear to be a marketing strategy, it is. A company official stated that the time spent near the company store to charge mobile devices will be utilised for product demonstrations and conversions. The company has recently launched the Galaxy S6 edge+ in India, and Samsung stated that the device will be manufactured locally to serve the country’s customers.

Moreover, Samsung India’s R&D team is said to be deeply involved in development of features such as Live Video Broadcast, People Edge, Easy Share, camera, and My Profile that are used in the Galaxy S6 edge+ as well as many other high-end devices from Samsung.

Galaxy Note 5 and S6 Edge+ now up for grabs in 24K gold

There’s no denying that the recently-announced Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ are two of the most elegant smartphones currently on the market, but if they’re not quite opulent enough for you, Vietnamese gold-plating company Karalux has today taken the wraps off both models dipped in 24-carat gold to tickle your fancy.

While gold-plating is a task that requires tons of experience and precision, Karalux claims that the process for stripping down, coating and rebuilding the Galaxy Note 5 was significantly easier than its predecessor. Here’s how the Hanoi-based company did it:

First, Karalux’s engineers dismantled the twosome, both of which are constructed from 7000 series aluminium. It’s believed that this alloy is 60% stronger and one-third of the density of stainless steel, making it incredibly light and durable for day-to-day use.

Gold-Note-5-S6-Edge-Plus-Front

Once deconstructed, the individual pieces are thoroughly cleansed using an array of different high-end chemicals. A base layer is then laid to provide a clean, smooth surface for the gold to adhere to.

The next step is gold-plating. To do this, all the metal parts are submerged into a tank of liquified gold and left for a short period of time. Once the ions have attracted and the components have turned gold, they are pulled out and a protective layer is sprayed on top.

Gold-Galaxy-S6-Note-5

As you can imagine, this service doesn’t come cheap. The gold-plating process alone will set you back VND 8 million ($355), and seeing as Karalux doesn’t let you send in your own device, your only option is to purchase a made-to-order 24–carat gold Galaxy Note 5 or Galaxy S6 Edge+, which will cost you an eye-watering VND 25 million ($1110).

International Galaxy Note 4 getting the Android 5.1.1 update in Poland

Following Sprint’s release of the long-awaited update for the Galaxy Note 4, it looks like Samsung has started rolling out Android 5.1.1 for the unlocked variant of the phablet in Poland (for the SM-N910C model.) Users on XDA are reporting that the update is making its way to their Note 4′s over the air, and a full version of the firmware has also been posted online. We’re not seeing anything on Kies just yet, but this update should be the real deal and be followed by a rollout for other regions in the coming weeks.

Android 5.1.1 brings behind-the-scenes changes to performance, battery life and the overall user experience, and it should also include a fix for the Stagefright vulnerability unless Samsung is planning to patch that with an additional update. You can go into the Settings » About device » Software updates menu and hit that Update now button to see if the OTA is available, or just wait for a notification to pop up on its own. You could also try flashing the firmware available at the source link; we’re not completely sure it’s the final version of the update, but the comments suggest it works properly and doesn’t have any issues.

Exclusive: Samsung Galaxy Grand On and Mega On specifications

We broke news of Samsung working on the Galaxy Grand On and Galaxy Mega On earlier this month, and today we have the entire spec sheet of the two smartphones. Both devices will be part of the company’s new O series – or On, depending on where Samsung takes it – and will feature entry-level specifications similar to the Galaxy J lineup, but as the phone names suggest, these devices will basically be spin-offs of existing lineups.

Alright, so let’s get down to the specifications. The Galaxy Mega On (SM-G600) will feature a 5.5-inch HD display, a quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor clocked at 1.2GHz, 1.5GB of RAM, and a 13-megapixel primary camera. It will also have a 5-megapixel front camera, 8GB of expandable storage, and a 3,000 mAh battery, with everything packed under a 151.8×77.5×8.2 mm body that weighs 145 grams.

The Galaxy Grand On (SM-G550) will be a smaller device with a 5-inch HD screen, Exynos 3475 CPU clocked at 1.3GHz (this chip will also power the Galaxy J2), 1GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel rear camera, and a 2,600 mAh battery. The front camera and internal storage will be the same as the Mega On, and both phones will launch with Android 5.1 out of the box. The Grand On’s dimensions come in at 142×71.9×8.5 mm and it will weigh 140 grams.

The Galaxy Grand On and Galaxy Mega On aren’t much different than the Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7 in terms of hardware, so we’re guessing the design will yet again be the differentiating factor, like it is when it comes to the Galaxy J and E series. Going by Samsung’s nagging habit of launching multiple new phones in each lineup, devices with the On tag will no doubt increase in number in the future. For now, we have no clue when the Grand On and Mega On will launch, but we will be sure to keep you updated whenever we come across further details.

Samsung registers ‘Samsung Games’ in South Korea

Samsung Games Co. Ltd registered ‘Samsung Games’ today in South Korea, which indicates that Samsung wants to expand its reach all the way to the gaming industry. The database of the South Korean Intellectual Property Office now includes a new Samsung branch that could change gaming for the better with new software. We sort-of saw this coming when Samsung launched its Gear VR virtual-reality headsets along with a collaboration with Oculus.

Samsung is heavily investing in the gaming industry and wants to take things very far, which isn’t surprising given that Samsung is a major influence in many other markets. Samsung will be displaying some of its new technologies at the upcoming IFA event in Berlin, but it’s unlikely that we could see more information about their gaming service plans. Since the branch was just registered in South Korea, it’s likely that it’s at a very early stage right now, so we’ll have to wait a little longer before we have any definite information.

Samsung Galaxy S6 edge receives ‘Advanced Smartphone 2015-2016′ award from EISA

The European Imaging And Sound Association has just awarded the Galaxy S6 edge the ‘Advanced Smartphone 2015-2016′ award which is a very prestigious mark of quality. EISA has several categories for awards including ‘European Headphone of the year”, ‘European Tablet of the year’, etc. Last year the award went to the LG G3 and two years ago the HTC One took the podium. EISA has been judging phones every year starting with 2005 and they always pick true quality over anything else. They also released a promotional video for the Galaxy S6 edge which highlights the device’s primary features in honor of the award.

According to EISA, the Galaxy S6 edge is one of the best mobile phones that Samsung has ever produced and this seems to be a pretty popular opinion if you take a look at the device’s history. The ‘Ultimate Test Drive’ promotion ran out of devices within 24 hours and Samsung has reported an improvement in its financial status during Q2 due to its flagship sales. The flagship device surpassed all expectations and we hope Samsung will keep improving on it with future iterations (especially when it comes to software functionality for the Edge screen.)

Samsung outs three new wireless audio 360 speakers

Samsung has just brought three new Wireless Audio 360 Speaker models to the market: the R1, R3 and R5. These three new devices are going to be on display at Berlin next month during IFA and it’s worth noting that the tech company partnered with Qobuz, which is a music service meant to work on Samsung’s audio devices. Among the things that make the R1, R3 and R5 unique is the high resolution streaming service, an updated Multiroom App for Android and iOS which allows you to connect with your home devices through Wi-Fi, and intuitive controls. You can either change the volume, play or pause, or even select different music sources with a gentle touch or a swipe on top of the speaker. Here’s what Jurack Chae, Senior Vice President of the Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics had to say about these new wireless speakers:

With these additional models we are bringing a new kind of high quality sound to the market, with design that is simple, yet premium, and offers a more intuitive user interface

According to Samsung Tomorrow we will be able to buy the R1, R3 and R5 in both Europe as well as the U.S. with a price range of $199-$399. More information will be delivered during IFA which takes place from the 4th of September until the 9th and it’s where we will see a lot of other exciting projects.

All five Galaxy Note flagships hit the floor in this drop test video

We are currently in the fifth year of the existence of Samsung’s Galaxy Note lineup, with the Galaxy Note 5 featuring an exquisite metal and glass design that’s leaps and bounds above all of its predecessors. Not content with simply testing the Note 5′s resilience to being dropped on the floor, YouTube channel TechRax decided to put all five Galaxy Note flagships to the torture to see which one comes out on top.

A broken screen is a common element for all the devices in the drop test, with the Galaxy Note 5 actually making it out with the least damage to its front glass (though the touchscreen did stop working, something that wasn’t the case with the other Notes.) It didn’t fare so well on the back side, but we all knew this is what we were getting into when the market forced Samsung to leave plastic behind for its top-end smartphones.

It’s always painful to watch these drop tests, and seeing five smartphones being willfully destroyed is even worse. Check out the drop test in the video below; the video’s a bit too long, so if you’re only interested in the results you can skip to the 9:56 mark.

Samsung Pay nabs over 80,000 credit and check cards in its first week alone

Back in March this year Samsung announced its new payment service called Samsung Pay, a couple of months after the announcement this service was put through several beta tests to ensure that everything remains copacetic when it’s finally opened to the public. Samsung confirmed earlier this month when the service will go live in South Korea and United States, the two launch markets, and Samsung Pay is proving to be quite popular in South Korea. More than 80,000 credit and check cards have been registered on Samsung Pay in just five days since launch, the service has done a commendable job of bringing in a lot of users early on.

A report out of Korea claims that on the launch day itself, August 20, over 10,000 credit and check cards were registered on Samsung Pay with the number growing substantially in the subsequent days. One of the major reasons for this popularity is the fact that Samsung Pay is fundamentally different from many other mobile payment services, it’s support for magnetic secure transmission or MST means that the service is acceptable at almost all merchants where credit or debit cards can be used. Merchants don’t have to purchase new equipment to accept payments through Samsung Pay and users don’t have to worry about trying to find out whether or not Samsung Pay is accepted, this is likely playing a decisive role in bringing early users in great numbers.

The United States is the next launch market for Samsung Pay where the service will go live in September, Samsung plans to expand the payments service to China and countries across Europe later this year.

Samsung provides a simple solution for the S Pen insertion debacle

There’s this thing about the Galaxy Note 5 that has steadily been gaining steam online today, for some it’s a design flaw and for others it’s just something that has been blown way out of proportion. It was reported earlier today that if you were to insert the S Pen backwards into the Galaxy Note 5 and yank it free, which you would obviously do because you won’t carry around the device like that with the pointy end sticking out, this would end up damaging the mechanism that automatically detects whether the S Pen is attached or detached from the device.

Samsung was asked to comment on the matter and maybe provide a solution, and it has come up with a very simple solution. It provided the following statement to the BBC:

We highly recommend our Galaxy Note 5 users follow the instructions in the user guide to ensure they do not experience such an unexpected scenario caused by reinserting the S-Pen in the other way around.

Yes that’s precisely what the company is saying, read the user manual, it’s that thing you immediately chuck to the side the moment you unbox your new handset. The user manual does have a warning which clearly states that inserting the S Pen the wrong way can cause it to become stuck which will ultimately cause damage to the pen and the phone. From the looks of it Samsung doesn’t have any plans of fixing this at a hardware level, even when the case can be made that it’s more than possible for people who have read the user manual to insert the S Pen in the wrong way particularly when they’re preoccupied or just not paying attention to the matter at hand.

Galaxy Note 5 inboxing and unboxing video is a visual treat

Unboxing videos are very common on YouTube, countless channels basically do the same thing where they take their time to open the box, put the new device to the side and check all of the contents. There’s hardly anything new to these unboxing videos which is why Samsung’s “inboxing” videos caught everybody’s attention, the first was released earlier this year when the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge arrived. Instead of showing a box being unwrapped and its contents being put under a magnifying glass, Samsung started from the other way around by showing the new smartphone being assembled by hand. It has already published a beautifully shot inboxing video for the Galaxy S6 edge+ and now one for the Galaxy Note 5 has arrived.

The idea remains the same, a Samsung engineer approaches a table where all of the Galaxy Note 5 components are neatly laid out. The device is assembled by hand and then packaged in a box which gets unboxed in due course, there are plenty of crisp sound effects that make almost all of us love the unboxing experience. You get plenty of good shots of the Galaxy Note 5 so that it’s striking beauty can be truly admired, but I guess this will be a bit painful to watch for people who don’t live in select markets where the Galaxy Note 5 will be released.

Gear S2 smartwatch final design is very pleasing to gawk at

The Galaxy S6 edge+ provides form factor excitement in a rather boring market

The Galaxy S6 edge+ is one of coolest smartphones on the market right now. It is something fresh, something new that we haven’t seen on the market in a long, long time. And it is a testimony to the Korean manufacturer’s ability to emerge with something exciting in a smartphone market that has really gone downhill and is nothing short of stagnant and boring, to say the least.

To see the current sad and unfortunate state of the market, take a look at some recent smartphone presentations (that shall remain nameless). For some odd reason (nothing short of odd), swappable back covers have become the new style preference of some tech enthusiasts and consumers, with many online discussions going something like this: “do you like the sandstone, Kevlar, or wood back best?” If sandstone and wood are not your swappable back cover options, there are the “childish” colors like some form of neon green, neon purple (light purple, even), and bright yellow (which is an atrocity for any smartphone to model off, no matter how good-looking).

Colors and build materials are all the rage in the smartphone market now. How many times have you seen a video or read a blog post that dominates 90% of a new smartphone announcement with, specs aside, a lengthy discussion about whether or not one build material looks better than another? It’s gotten to the point where I feel like smartphones have become nothing short of paperweights or luxury bricks that we discuss because these items “happen” to have tech specs and run Android.

I’m not a person who usually gets excited about hardware build quality, since, honesty first, most smartphones have the usual “brick” look with some back cover material and a front display. Most smartphones also come with front and back-facing cameras, speakers, USB port, and so on – so these components do not surprise me. In the hardware arena, though, good looks have become a top priority for premium smartphones, and Samsung’s Galaxy S6 edge+ meets that.

Swappable back covers and wood, sandstone, and Kevlar, along with childish colors gone amok, are all testimony to the fact that the smartphone manufacturers, who are to lead the way for the consumer market, have failed in their job. Manufacturers should consume their efforts with examining and creating new approaches to mobile gadgets, looking for ways to advance the devices we cradle in our hands. The goal of selling smartphones each year is to raise money that can be spent on research and development, known in the tech world as “R&D.” When manufacturers come out with new smartphones that stuff a few chips in them that meet industry standards (and don’t cost much), with the same “brick” form factor that has persisted over the last few years, it makes me wonder what they’re doing with the money consumers give them. Additionally, it makes me wonder why anyone should invest in them at all if this year’s phone looks like last year’s phone with a few new color options and no additional experience-enhancing software to boot.

And let’s reexamine the removable back: was Samsung not criticized for the same thing in the Galaxy S5? “It’s cheap and flimsy,” they say; yet and still, Motorola does it with the Moto X Style, and OnePlus does it with the OnePlus 2 (which has a removable back but not a removable battery) – and they call them masterpieces? It’s funny how Samsung is pounded for removable back covers, but Motorola and OnePlus are praised for them by consumers (although removable back covers are criticized by a great number of tech reviewers). As the old saying goes, “What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.” If Samsung’s back covers are cheap and laughable, then so are Motorola’s and OnePlus’s – even if you happen to like them better.

Samsung’s Korean rival, LG, has had its G4 smartphone praised for its 16MP camera with laser autofocus, OIS+, and f/1.8 camera aperture, but the company’s latest smartphone (with its brown leather back cover) looks hideous. Marques Brownlee has stood out for his claim that Samsung’s Galaxy S5 looks like “a giant Band-Aid,” but it’s got nothin’ on the LG G4: the brown leather-backed phone looks like a deflated basketball with a display and two cameras. I’ll let you figure that one out on your own.

Nowadays, when you want to look as if you’re innovating in the smartphone space, you need only create a swappable back cover with a few build materials and colors to convince everyone. If, hypothetically speaking, Samsung’s Galaxy S5 contained software “gimmickry” last year, and the Galaxy S4 the year before it, as some believe, the new “childish” colors and swappable back covers with Kevlar and sandstone are the “gimmickry” in the current market, placed under the titles of “customization” and “choice.”

While the current gimmicks are winning people left and right, with $389 and $399 price tags thrown in (or swappable covers with build materials as cheap excuses to hike phone prices), Samsung’s Galaxy S6 edge+ appeals to consumers who know what they want and who value what innovation is. Innovation is unique, distinct, separated from the batch. Anyone can add a few colors and build materials like wood, metal, Kevlar, and sandstone; however, not everyone can create a smartphone form factor that sets it apart. When it comes to Samsung, the Korean manufacturer isn’t your typical “sandstone, wood, and Kevlar back cover” manufacturer; its Galaxy S6 edge+ and edge predecessor, the Galaxy S6 edge, stand alone – in a market that has been boring for a long time.

Whatever you do just don’t insert the Galaxy Note 5′s S Pen backwards

The Galaxy Note 5 is a beautiful handset crafted from metal and finished off with curved glass back, the handset looks very nice and for the first time comes with a patented push-to-eject mechanism for retrieving the S Pen from the device. Users will certainly take advantage of the S Pen and the various features that it offers however due to a possible design flaw with this device it would be best to avoid inserting the S Pen backwards into the device, doing so could break the pen detection feature of the Galaxy Note 5.

With previous generations the worst that could happen was the S Pen getting stuck and requiring quite a bit of force to be yanked free, on the Galaxy Note 5 there appears to be almost no resistance even if the S Pen is being inserted the wrong way. Once it’s far enough in the wrong direction it will eventually get stuck and yanking it free will most likely break the feature which basically detects whether the stylus is attached or detached from the device. The folks who conducted this test report that pen detection is now completely broken on their unit, they just might be on to something here, the scribe has reached out to Samsung for a comment but is yet to hear back. In the meantime people who own the Galaxy Note 5 should take extra care when inserting the S Pen back into the device, it can be very easy to slide it in the wrong way if you’re distracted and not really paying attention to that mundane task.

Samsung Gear S2 could arrive with a nano SIM card holder

The upcoming Samsung Gear S2 is rumored to arrive with a nano SIM card slot which will enable cellular networking on it. This is a feature that could bring voice calling from your wrist or navigating the web without having to pair the wearable device with a smartphone. Speaking of connectivity it’s worth mentioning that Samsung’s upcoming smartwatch will feature Wi-fi connectivity, Bluetooth v4.1 and a fantastic AMOLED panel with a resolution of 360×360, powered by the Exynos 3472 chipset. The source also mentions that the Gear S2 could be priced at around €399 which is in line with the previous generation.

We expect the Gear S2 to be released on the 3rd of September in Berlin and we’re certainly very hyped after Samsung’s latest preview video. This smartwatch is very promising and it could certainly smash its competition, but we’ll have to wait for the official unveiling in Berlin. The Gear S2 is also known as Project Orbis and it’s been in development for a long time, judging by the fact that it’s most likely going to be released in Q3 2015. From what we know it’s also possible that the Gear S2 will come in two different versions, one for men and one for women.

Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime gets Android 5.0 in Russia

We gave you an exclusive look at Android Lollipop running on the Galaxy Grand Prime a long time ago, and Samsung has finally gotten around to pushing out the official update to the device. The Grand Prime is currently receiving Android 5.0.2 in Russia, with build number G530HXCU1BOH3 accompanying the update. Yes, the update is sadly not Android 5.1.1, and we’re guessing the latest version of Lollipop has very little chance of ever making it to the Grand Prime even with future updates.

The update should include improved performance, a slightly overhauled user interface with Lollipop-inspired colors, heads-up notifications, and better battery life. You can expect the over-the-air update to show up on your device if you’re in Russia at any moment; the firmware is available for download from our database if you don’t want to wait and wish to update manually.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ are selling much better than the Galaxy Note 4

It looks like Samsung’s latest phablet devices are selling quite well according to KoreaTimes. One of the key selling points of these devices seems to be Samsung Pay, which has already gone live in South Korea. Owners of the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+ can use this feature out of the box.

These two phablets have managed to sell over 100,000 units combined three days following their launch, which is higher than the sales figure of the Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy Note Edge during their initial launch days last September. Here’s what an SK Telecom official had to say about sales of these two phablets:

The combined average sales on a daily basis reached about 25,000. This is much more than sales of the Note 4 and the Note Edge, which were introduced in September last year. Samsung’s decision to release the new Note and Galaxy a few months ahead of their international debut has had a good impact.

It’s going to be interesting to follow the sale figures of the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+ once Samsung Pay arrives in the US starting with the 28th of September. Judging by the fact that their ‘Ultimate Test Drive’ promotion had such a big success, it’s safe to say that the tech company’s latest devices will have good amount of success.

Amazon Echo is now compatible with Samsung’s SmartThings hub

We reported last week that Samsung will start selling SmartThing’s upcoming home automation products from next month. The company also revealed that it will announce new features at the same time. Right before the announcement, the company has announced that its hub is now compatible with Amazon Echo speakers.

The Amazon Echo speaker is an internet-connected smart wireless speaker that features S Voice and Siri-like digital voice assistant Alexa. Echo and SmartThings can now talk to each other, so you can say things like “Alexa, turn on the desk light” or “Alexa, turn off the living room light” and so on. Basically, you can voice control things connected to SmartThings hub through Amazon Echo speaker. Samsung acquired home automation startup SmartThings last year for $200 million.

Amazon Echo integration will work with current-generation as well as next-generation Hubs from SmartThings. Be sure to check out the video below that showcases demonstration of controlling SmartThings-connected appliances using an Echo speaker. If you own both the devices, you can check out SmartThings’ guide that has step-by-step instructions to connect these devices.

Samsung reportedly conducting intensive testing on the Snapdragon 820

Samsung didn’t go with the Snapdragon 810 for this year’s flagship devices instead it opted for its own Exynos 7420 processor but that doesn’t mean that the company will never return to Qualcomm processors for high-end devices. It has been rumored multiple times that the company might consider using the Snapdragon 820, internally known as Jungfrau, in the Galaxy S7 next year and a new report out of Korea claims that Samsung has already started conducting intensive testing on the upcoming Qualcomm processor.

The report suggests that Samsung has still not made up its mind about whether it should stick with its own Exynos processor for next year’s flagship or go with the Snapdragon 820 that’s being intensively tested at its labs. The tests are going to provide Samsung with data that’s going to make this decision easier. As far as the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 is concerned it’s expected to feature a 64-bit quad-core CPU with 14nm FinFET which promises 35 percent improvement over the Snapdragon 810, Adreno 530 GPU, LP-DDR4 RAM support, Cat. 10 LTE modem as well as support for 4K60 fps encode/decode, UFS and eMMC 5.1 storage solutions.

Samsung is using ISOCELL camera sensors in Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+

Samsung has a habit of sourcing smartphone components from different brands to save itself from demand and supply issues. If you can remember, we reported earlier this year that Samsung has used two different camera sensors – ISOCELL and Sony IMX240 – in the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge, and we also showcased the difference between the image quality from both sensors.

Now it has come to our notice that Samsung has used its homegrown ISOCELL camera sensor instead of the Sony IM240 in its recently released phablets, the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+. You can see in the screenshots below that both the devices are using camera sensors developed by Samsung’s System LSI business. We don’t know if Samsung is using Sony’s IMX240 in other units, but if you own one of these devices, you can check out what camera sensor it has and let us know.

Samsung has already run out of phones for the ‘Ultimate Test Drive’ iPhone promotion

Looks like Samsung’s latest deal for iPhone users has been a huge hit, as the tech company has already run out of devices to give out due to the overwhelming amount of customers. For only $1, any US-based citizen with an iPhone device and an activated SIM card could visit Samsung’s promotion website and take one of the following devices for a test run: Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S6 edge+. There’s no news as to when more units will become available but for now it would be wise to keep checking their website. It’s definitely interesting to see such a huge interest in switching from an iPhone to a Samsung device, and we’re curious to see how this promotion will continue. Let us know what you think about this deal by leaving a comment.

No Lollipop for the Galaxy E7, says Samsung UK

The Galaxy E7 is a very robust mid-range smartphone that has been performing quite nicely in the market, the handset doesn’t come with Android 5.0 Lollipop pre-installed but it’s in line to receive the update later this year. It appears though that the Galaxy E7 may not receive the Lollipop update in all markets that it’s available in, Samsung UK has said that there will be no Lollipop update for this handset in the United Kingdom.

The confirmation comes from the official Samsung UK Twitter account, while they’re apologetic about disappointing customers, Samsung UK says that they have had it confirmed that the E7 is not going to be updated to Lollipop. This doesn’t mean that the Galaxy E7 won’t receive Lollipop at all, users should reach out to regional arms of the company to get confirmation, but from the looks of it Lollipop may not be released for this device in all markets. So the possibility remains that Lollipop has only been dropped for the Galaxy E7 in the United Kingdom and it might be made available to users in other countries, but for now Samsung hasn’t provided any roadmap which details when and where this update will be released.

Samsung releases a beautifully shot ‘inboxing/unboxing’ video of the Galaxy S6 edge+

I’m sure you have seen many unboxing videos of your favorite gadgets but have you ever seen an “inboxing” video? Samsung came up with this idea earlier this year when it released an inboxing video for the Galaxy S6 edge, basically it shows the device being built from scratch with each component being installed by hand. The company has released a similar video for its latest handset which also covers the unboxing of the Galaxy S6 edge+.

All of the components are laid out on a table and then they’re put together by hand, the battery goes in first followed by the fingerprint scanner and the dual-edge display. In goes the rear and front facing camera as well as the application processor, RAM and onboard storage. Finally the wireless charging coil and metal frame are attached before the device is finished off with the glass back cover, packaged in a box and sent on its way. This is where the unboxing part of the video begins, aided by some very crisp sounds that we always hear when unboxing a new device. We get a look at all of the accessories that come in the box as well as the device itself. The video is beautifully shot and worth spending 1 minute and 21 seconds of your life on.

Samsung pushing notification ads to some users

It seems that Samsung has started pushing notification advertisements to certain users according to AndroidPolice. One of the ads comes from the bundled Peel Remote App, which is interesting given their latest statement. It appears that the ads are delivered using the Samsung Push Service which is meant to deliver notification support for things such as Samsung Pay, Samsung Link and many others. The targeted ads seem to be smarter than regular advertisements, for instance Peel advertised an ad on TV and upon clicking it the owner of the smartphone was capable of setting a reminder to watch it on TV.

Regardless, this is most likely going to turn out to be a very unpopular feature among Samsung’s customers, particularly given that one of the ads was for the Galaxy S6 edge+. You should also be aware that Samsung isn’t the first company to practice push-based notification ads, after HTC used the same sort of system to advertise for the latest Fantastic Four movie.

[Poll] How much storage do you need on your smartphone?

Forget the new design, forget the industry-leading hardware – the removal of the microSD slot has been the most talked about aspect of Samsung’s 2015 flagships. Almost no one is happy with the fact that Samsung is now taking an Apple and Google-like approach and limiting users to the internal storage on their phones and asking them to opt for cloud storage should they need that extra storage space.

However, Samsung slightly made up for its “evil” decision by swapping the 16GB base model for 32GB, and also offered a 64GB version for those who can’t do with 32GB. But with the Galaxy S6 edge+, Samsung seems to have taken away the 64GB option for many consumers; the company hasn’t announced the 64GB model in various markets yet, only offering details on the 32GB model. If it is making the 64GB model limited this time around, it’s something that won’t sit well with consumers, especially after the microSD slot is already a non-existent feature on the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note flagships.

It’s possible Samsung realized that most people are content with the 32GB model (or simply unwilling to fork out the extra cash the 64GB model commands), so we thought we would put the question to our readers. How much storage do you need on your smartphone? Do you think 32GB is a fair option, or do you think the 64GB and higher storage variants should be standard and easy to obtain as well?
