Apple seeks $1 billion in damages from Samsung in patent retrial

As we reported earlier this week, the Apple v. Samsung patent infringement case is undergoing a retrial. The case is about Samsung infringing on three design and two utility patents owned by Apple. The retrial is not about whether Samsung is guilty of infringement or not, but what the damages should be. Samsung is hoping to pay a smaller amount as damages while Apple is arguing against it.

Samsung wants to pay only $28 million

The Korean tech giant is relying on the recent Supreme Court ruling which said that damages from design patents could be based on the value of the infringed components instead of the total profit from the device. Accordingly, Samsung is urging the jury to limit the damages to $28 million, while Apple is demanding $1 billion in damages for infringing its patents.

By selling millions of phones which infringed on three of Apple’s design patents, Samsung reportedly made $3.3 billion in revenue and $1 billion in profit. This is the rationale behind Apple demanding $1 billion in damages from Samsung. The Korean company, on the other hand, believes that damages should be calculated only on the value of the infringed parts and not on the entire profits earned from those devices.

In the original trial in 2012, Samsung was ordered to pay $1.05 billion as damages to Apple by the Jury. After a series of legal battles, Samsung finally paid $548 million to Apple in damages, out of which $399 million is under examination in the 2018 retrial. The case went all the way to Supreme Court before coming back to the same lower court for a retrial.

Possible new Galaxy Tab A 10.1 spotted, Galaxy Tab S4 hits Geekbench

Samsung may not be launching only the Galaxy Tab S4 this year as a new addition to its tablet lineup. A Samsung device with model number SM-T590 seems to have gone through the Eurasian Economic Commission last week along with the Galaxy Tab S4 – the SM-T590 is mentioned along with the SM-T830 in the same document. The SM-T830 is the Galaxy Tab S4, and the SM-T590 may be the 2018 variant of the Galaxy Tab A 10.1 that launched in 2016 with model number SM-T580.

Galaxy Tab S4 and new Galaxy Tab A 10.1 in the works

We don’t know anything about the SM-T590 other than the fact that it’s being tested in some capacity, and it’s possible it may not be released in the market considering we didn’t get a 2017 iteration of a 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab A even though Samsung did make an 8-inch version (a 7-inch version was recently launched in India, but it was an older variant that ran Android 5.1 Lollipop). Not that a 2018 model is out of the question, as a cheaper 10.1-inch tablet with an S Pen may be a good option for those wouldn’t be able to afford the Galaxy Tab S4.

The Galaxy Tab S4 may also see Samsung’s high-end AMOLED-toting tablet lineup make a return to a 10.5-inch screen with 16:10 aspect ratio, judging by the SM-T835’s GFXBench listing. It’s hard to say for sure without more such benchmarks as we move closer to the tablet’s official launch, and sadly, nothing about the screen is mentioned in the Tab S4’s Geekbench benchmark listing that has been spotted today (Geekbench never specifies a device’s screen size). Geekbench does, however, has the tablet running Android 8.1, while earlier appearances were with Android 8.0.

This means that the first Samsung device with the latest version of Oreo may be the Galaxy Tab S4 and not the Galaxy Note 9 (come on Samsung, put Project Treble to good use and launch the Note 9 with Android P out of the box!). Also revealed in the Geekbench listing is a Snapdragon 835 SoC and 4GB of RAM, specs that were already known, with the tablet scoring similar to the Snapdragon 835-powered Galaxy S8.

Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ get Oreo on US Cellular

Android updates are a messy affair. Buggy builds, delayed updates, carrier modifications, lack of security patches, etc. are all too common for many Android users. Even a major global brand like Samsung with millions of units in sales and billions of dollars in revenue offers a less than satisfactory experience when it comes to Android updates for its smartphones and tablets. Not just the budget devices, but even the flagship smartphones from Samsung leave a lot of fans disappointed on this issue.

Late to the party

Case in point is the Android 8.0 Oreo update for the Galaxy S8 and S8+. After months of beta testing, Samsung started rolling out the Oreo update to the Galaxy S8 duo in February. However, as with any other Android update, it was not available to all the Galaxy S8 and S8+ users around the world at once. Since then, the company has been pushing out the update to users in different regions and on different carriers around the world. Today, it’s the turn of the Galaxy S8 and S8+ users on US Cellular to receive the update.

The four major US operators – AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile – have already released the Oreo update for the Galaxy S8 and S8+ on their networks in the last couple of months. US Cellular is late to the party as it has been more than two months since the Oreo update started rolling out to the Galaxy S8/S8+. It’s now rolling out firmware version G950USQU3CRD4 and G955USQU3CRD4 for the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+ on its network.

As usual, the update will be rolling out in stages and may not be available to all the eligible devices at once. If your US Cellular variant of the Galaxy S8 or S8+ hasn’t received the over-the-air software update notification yet, you can try to manually trigger the update from the Software update menu in the Settings app. The update brings a long list of functional and UI changes that we have discussed in detail in our What’s New with Android 8.0 Oreo series.

Samsung temporarily halts rollout of Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge Oreo update

After months of beta testing, Samsung finally started rolling out the Android 8.0 Oreo update in February beginning with the Galaxy S8 and S8+. Since then, the company has gradually pushed out the update to many older devices in its lineup. Earlier this month, the company started rolling out the Oreo update to the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge – its flagship devices from 2016. Unfortunately, it looks like some Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge users who updated their phones to Android 8.0 Oreo are encountering boot loops and reboots. Taking note of these complaints, Samsung has reportedly halted the rollout of the Oreo update for the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge temporarily.

Galaxy S7 Oreo update causing reboots on some devices

A moderator on Samsung’s official European help forum has confirmed this news to affected users by saying, “Following a limited number of cases where Galaxy S7 devices have rebooted unexpectedly with the Android 8.0 Oreo, we have temporarily stopped the rollout of the update. We are investigating the issue internally to ensure that the impact to the affected devices is minimized and the rollout of the update can resume as quickly as possible.”

The same information is also posted on the Notices section of Samsung’s Canadian help forum. The notice by the moderator says, “S7/S7 edge Android O upgrade is pending a fix for a technical issue discovered post initial rollout, Updates will be shared as available”. Currently, there is no information from Samsung about when it will resume the rollout of the update. In the meantime, if you are one of the affected users, you can try the following troubleshooting steps suggested by the moderator on the European help forum, though this would require a complete data wipe.

Despite months of beta testing, Samsung’s rollout of the Android 8.0 Oreo update hasn’t been smooth. Earlier this year, the company stopped the rollout of the Oreo update to the Galaxy S8/S8+ due to similar rebooting issues. The company fixed the bugs and resumed the rollout a couple of weeks later. It is disappointing to see another pair of Galaxy devices suffering from similar problems.

Have you run into reboot or other issues on your Galaxy S7 or S7 edge after updating to Oreo?

Early Galaxy Note 9 release may be due to Samsung’s accelerated schedule

Samsung released the Galaxy S9 a month before the Galaxy S8 came out last year and that move has paid dividends for the company. While it’s common for us to hear reports about an early release for upcoming Samsung flagships, it seems plausible this time around because a precedent has already been set.

Another report out of South Korea claims that there’s going to be an early Galaxy Note 9 release due to Samsung’s accelerated release schedule. It’s said that Samsung is speeding up the release schedule for its flagship smartphones ahead of the launch of the much-awaited foldable smartphone next year.

Galaxy Note 9 release

This isn’t going to the be the last report we hear about a possible early Galaxy Note 9 release. One report from a couple of months ago claimed that Samsung will release its flagship phablet ahead of schedule to make up for less-than-stellar sales of the Galaxy S9. That report claimed that the Galaxy Note 9 could be out by late July or early August.

Industry sources cited in the latest report claim that Samsung Display has started mass production of the 6.38-inch display panel for the Galaxy Note 9 in April, meaning that the company has started display production two months before it did for the Galaxy Note 8 last year. The late July and early August release timeframe has been reiterated in this report which also claims that the below expectation sales of the Galaxy S9 are one of the reasons why Samsung will make this decision.

The report also echoes recent speculation that the Galaxy S10 is going to be launched in January next year. Samsung is actually expected to unveil the handset at the Consumer Electronics Show 2019 in early January because it apparently wants to use the Mobile World Congress 2019 slot for the much-rumored foldable smartphone. It’s said that the company has accelerated its flagship release schedule for the next year in order to find a slot to debut the foldable device.

The early launch of the Galaxy S9 this year does make it seem plausible that this will play out as reported but it’s still too soon to be sure about the timeframe. Things should become more clear in the coming months. What are your thoughts on an accelerated release timeframe for Samsung’s upcoming premium devices? Let us know in the comments below.

Official Galaxy J6 renders leave nothing to the imagination

Merely a day after we exclusively leaked pictures of the upcoming Galaxy J6 in the flesh, we have come across countless renders of the new mid-range device through Dutch retailer Belsimpel which show off the handset in all its glory. The images that we leaked yesterday confirmed that this is the next device in Samsung’s lineup to get the Infinity Display after the premium mid-range Galaxy A8 (2018) and Galaxy A8+ (2018) as well as the mid-range Galaxy A6 and Galaxy A6+.

These renders reiterate that the Galaxy J6 is going to have a flat Infinity Display which means that the fingerprint sensor is now located at the back underneath the camera. Unlike Samsung’s other mid-range devices, the Galaxy J6 appears to have a plastic back so customers won’t get a metal unibody feel with this handset.

Official Galaxy J6 renders

Even though it touts an Infinity Display, the Galaxy J6 does have plenty of bezels but they won’t really get in the way of an immersive viewing experience thanks to the all-black front. Another key point to note is that even though the back is plastic, we have been told by a source that it won’t be removable so any hopes that you had of carrying around a spare battery with the Galaxy J6 have been dashed.

We have already reported on the full specs of this handset exclusively last week. The Galaxy J6 features a 5.6-inch AMOLED display with an Exynos 7870 processor coupled with 2GB, 3GB, or 4GB of RAM depending on the market. It’s also going to be available with up to 64GB of storage and a microSD card for external expansion.

The handset will also have a 13-megapixel rear and 8-megapixel front camera with an LED flash for both, LTE and dual-SIM support, a 3,000mAh battery and even facial recognition. It will be powered by Android 8.0 Oreo with Samsung Experience 9.0.

Samsung is yet to confirm when this handset is going to arrive and which markets it will be offered it. What we do know for sure is that the Galaxy J6 will be coming to Europe. Pricing and availability information should be out in the near future.
