Samsung’s new mid-range phone trades headphone jack for thinner waistline

Here’s a question: What do you think those buying a mid-range smartphone will be more interested in when it comes to choosing between a headphone jack and the thickness of a device? I’m assuming most of you think a headphone jack will be the clear winner, even if it comes at the expense of a slightly increased waistline.

But apparently Samsung India doesn’t think so. The company’s new Galaxy M52 5G has gone official in Poland and Germany, and it stands out for not just being an almost exact replica of the Galaxy A52s 5G as far as the spec sheet is concerned, but also for lacking a 3.5mm headphone port.

While neither Samsung Poland nor Samsung Germany boast about the phone’s sleek profile, Samsung India does. And you know what? There’s a high chance the company will use the sleek profile of the phone as an excuse for cutting out the headphone jack, but I’m not sure too many people will buy that excuse or accept the trade-off.

Galaxy M52 5G

This wouldn’t be the first time Samsung would do this. The Galaxy M40, released back in 2019, was Samsung’s cheapest mid-range phone at the time that didn’t have a headphone jack. When we asked Samsung why such an important feature was missing, we were told the company wanted to make a sleek phone and that left no space for a 3.5mm connector.

However, this seems more like a trick to keep the Galaxy A52s 5G desirable after the Galaxy M52 5G goes on sale. After all, the M52 5G is highly likely to cost less than the A52s 5G, just like every other M-series rebrand of an A-series phone. But cutting out a feature so many buyers look for in the mid-range and budget segment could be a great way to make sure the M52 5G doesn’t completely destroy the sales of the A52s 5G.

Still, it’s the customer that ends up paying the price in the long run. Instead of just having a single device that has it all, Samsung insists on making two versions with very few differences, and it’s very frustrating. Fingers crossed the company will see sense at some point instead of continuing down this road, or those who it seeks to convert into customers might just end up converting to a different brand instead.

Samsung’s efforts to crush leaks are as weak as its update support in 2011

Those who have been Samsung users for long enough remember all too well what a mess its update support used to be. Some devices wouldn’t get any updates for months. Others would get one every month. A few wouldn’t be touched for the better part of a year.

There was no rhyme or reason to any of it. Users just had to sit back and wait for Samsung to roll the dice. If they were lucky, their device would get an update. Sometimes, even if their device did, their particular variant wouldn’t. Owners of carrier-locked units in the US know this pain all too well.

It wasn’t really until the last couple of years that Samsung overhauled its software update policy. It provides a clear list of devices that will receive updates monthly, quarterly or bi-annually. Such is the pace now that new updates are sent out even before it’s detailed what’s inside them.

We’ve really been happy with this change. It has been pointed out on SamMobile multiple times that Samsung has now been killing it with updates. The company has addressed one of the biggest pain points of owning its devices. Not only that, it’s blazing a new trail. It’s one of the few Android OEMs to offer three major Android OS upgrades and four years of security upgrades (and it’s got the highest number of devices that qualify for three major upgrades).

Samsung has the capacity to achieve incredible things. If it didn’t, it wouldn’t have been one of the biggest companies on the planet. This is why it’s just so mind-boggling to see that the company hasn’t really cracked down on leaks.

Rumors are one thing. You can’t do anything about rumors. It’s easy enough to make educated guesses by just taking history into account. For example, the Galaxy S21 Ultra supports the S Pen. So I can easily make an educated guess that the Galaxy S22 Ultra will too. Lo and behold, we have a rumor.

It’s also a fact that people talk. Someone at a company that supplies a component to Samsung might talk to a newspaper. People at carrier or retail partners that Samsung briefs on new devices might speak to a blogger. Crushing rumors is like playing whack-a-mole.

When detailed media assets start leaking out months before launch, it’s an entirely different matter. Time and again we’ve seen seemingly original renders of Samsung’s products leak online before launch. As the launch approaches, we see videos and high-def assets leak online.

That’s exactly what happened with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3. Days before the new foldables were due to be unveiled, the detailed leaks had spoiled everything. We have seen this happen over and over again with every new launch, flagship or otherwise.

It’s not that Samsung can’t keep a lid on things when it wants to. The original Galaxy Fold was very well protected. There weren’t any substantial leaks months or even weeks before its launch. Samsung also kept the exclusive Mirror Gold finish for the Galaxy Z Flip under the wraps.

This begs the question of why the company is not doing enough to crush leaks. It invests so much time and resources in planning elaborate Unpacked events to introduce new products that have no element of surprise left.

It’s also disappointing for fans. They have nothing to look forward to at these events. Everything is spoiled by the leaks. The wow factor is severely diminished and the events become a bore.

Apple’s efforts to keep everything locked down are exemplary. Yes, there are rumors and whispers about its devices too. People create concepts and try to make educated guesses. It’s not common, though, for all media assets of its upcoming devices to leak online.

Why isn’t Samsung doing more to crush the leaks? It can’t be that it’s not interested in doing that anymore. Gone are the days when we’d get to see blurry images of new devices from the factory. It has evidently ramped up the security inside production facilities.

Shouldn’t a similar approach be taken for its digital assets? Why are they allowed to be distributed so freely months before the actual launch? The Galaxy S22 launch is still four months away. The fact that the first Galaxy S22 Ultra leaked renders have started ruining the surprise already is justification enough that something needs to be done.

As for when Samsung will do it is anybody’s guess right now. There are obvious gaps through which these assets are leaking online. Nobody’s going to buy that Samsung doesn’t know about them. It even wields the power to plug them. Will it? If you ask me, it should have done that yesterday.

BREAKING: First Galaxy S22 Ultra renders are here!

We are still months away from the launch of the Galaxy S22 series, but a lot of their features and specifications have leaked already. Now, their renders have leaked for the first time, and they look stunning. @OnLeaks and Digit have published the first 3D render images of the Galaxy S22 Ultra, revealing the smartphone’s design and some features.

The Galaxy S22 and the Galaxy S22+ are expected to have a 50MP triple-camera setup, while the Galaxy S22 Ultra could have a 108MP quad-camera setup. All smartphones are rumored to feature the Exynos 2200 chipset (Snapdragon 898 in some markets), Android 12 with One UI 4, stereo speakers, an IP68 rating, and an in-display fingerprint reader.

The Galaxy S22 has a 3,700mAh battery and 25W fast charging. The Galaxy S22+ has a 4,500mAh battery, while the Galaxy S22 Ultra is powered by a 5,000mAh battery. Both smartphones could feature 45W fast charging.

Galaxy S22 Ultra with a squarer footprint and S Pen slot!

First of all, let’s get the obvious out of the way and acknowledge the unusual design of the rear-camera housing. It’s unlike any Galaxy smartphone we’ve seen before, and it certainly highlights the square-shaped telephoto sensor.

More importantly, there’s a dedicated S Pen slot. The Galaxy S22 Ultra was rumored to sport this characteristic, and the renders at hand seemingly confirm this feature. In essence, the Galaxy S22 Ultra will be the spiritual successor of the Galaxy Note series. The overall design seems to resemble a Galaxy Note, thanks, in no small part, to the square corners.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra was the first in the series to support the S Pen, but the accessory wasn’t embedded. It was sold separately along with an S Pen case, and it was a practical, though not very elegant solution.

With rumors of the Galaxy Note series retiring, the Galaxy S22 Ultra is now seemingly on its way to fully embracing the S Pen and becoming the Note’s spiritual successor.

Galaxy M52 5G is official in Europe, doesn’t have a 3.5mm port

Amazon teased the Galaxy M52 5G earlier this week, and now Samsung went ahead and officially revealed the phone through its Polish and German portals. The Galaxy M52 5G landing pages are now live in at least these two European markets, and save for the phone’s exact launch date and price, they reveals virtually everything to know about the device.

The Galaxy M52 5G has a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED Plus display with an FHD+ resolution (2400 x 1080) and an Infinity-O cutout for the selfie camera. The phone’s back panel has a vertical stripe pattern and accommodates three rear-facing cameras.

As powerful as the Galaxy A52s 5G but lacks 3.5mm headphone port

Samsung’s new M-branded phone seems to be using the same Snapdragon 778G 5G chipset as the Galaxy A52s, the latter of which is arguably this year’s best mid-range phone so far.

In addition, the Galaxy M52 5G has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of built-in storage expandable via microSD.

The triple camera combo consists of a 64MP (f/1.8) primary shooter, a 12MP (f/2.2) ultra-wide sensor, and a 5MP (f/2.4) macro camera, while the selfie sensor clocks in at a resolution of 32MP.

Other specs include a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, NFC, USB-C, Bluetooth 5.0, and a 5,000mAh battery. However, unlike the Galaxy A52s 5G, the Galaxy M52 doesn’t have a standard 3.5mm headphone port.

When can we buy the Galaxy M52 5G, and for how much?

Amazon previously hinted at a September 28 release for the Galaxy M52 5G. And given that the device now has full-fledged landing pages in a couple of markets, that September 28 date is very likely to stick in parts of Europe.

So far, no pricing details have been revealed by Samsung, but the company is bound to spill the beans soon enough.

Biggest reason not to buy Microsoft Surface Duo over Samsung’s foldables

Instead of pursuing the foldable smartphone dream like Samsung or Huawei, Microsoft is going a different route. The Microsoft Surface Duo and the newly announced Surface Duo 2 simply join two displays together instead of having a single large display fold and unfold, and that means it’s not exactly a direct competitor to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold lineup.

Still, when you do draw comparisons, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is superior to the Surface Duo 2 in many ways, but there’s one particularly important reason why anyone eyeing the latter should think twice about actually getting one: software support.

The original Surface Duo launched back in September 2020, but to this day, it’s running Android 10 out of the box. And do you know when it is scheduled to get Android 11? Sometime before the end of this year. That’s the same ETA Samsung has provided for the Android 12 update for the Galaxy S21 series. Need we say more?

There’s also no word on exactly how long Microsoft intends to support the original Surface Duo, let alone the new Surface Duo 2. Microsoft is new to making phones that run Android so we guess we could cut it some slack, but in this day and age it’s a poor excuse to not provide crazy good software support to devices that cost upwards of $1000, especially when you have as many resources as Microsoft has at its disposal.

Of course, if you don’t care about software updates all that much, the Surface Duo could be a solid device for you, and we won’t judge if you do decide to get one. But we would recommend looking at the Galaxy Z Fold 3 instead, and our review is a good place to start if you’re looking for reasons to pick one up.

Galaxy A11 and Galaxy A12 get the September 2021 security update

Earlier today, Samsung rolled out the September 2021 security update to the Galaxy Z Flip, Galaxy Z Flip 5G, Galaxy A52 5G, and the Galaxy A32. The company has now released the security update to the Galaxy A11 and the Galaxy A12 in a few markets.

The Galaxy A11 has started getting a new software update with firmware version A115MUBS2BUI1 in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico, and Peru. The Galaxy A12 is getting a new update with firmware version A125FXXU1BUI3 in Russia and Ukraine. These new updates bring the September 2021 security patch to the Galaxy A11 and the Galaxy A12 to fix more than 50 vulnerabilities.

If you are a Galaxy A11 user in South America or a Galaxy A12 user in Russia or Ukraine, you can check for the latest update by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install. You can also download the latest firmware file for your smartphone from our firmware database and flash it manually.

The Galaxy A11 was launched in mid-2020, and it ran Android 10 out of the box. It received the Android 11-based One UI 3.1 update a few months ago. The Galaxy A12 was launched in late 2020 with Android 10 on board, and it received the Android 11 update in May 2021.

Hey, trainers: Pokemon Unite is now available on your Galaxy devices

Pokémon Unite, the latest mobile game starring the world-famous pocket monsters, is now available for download on your Galaxy device. While its release was initially scheduled for the 22nd, not everyone who pre-registered via the Google Play Store has yet received a notification prompting them to download the game. According to dozens of user reports on social media, that is.

But Play Store notifications being less than timely isn’t anything new. The point is, if you were eager to play Pokémon Unite, you should be able to download it as of right now. Even if your pre-registration notification hasn’t quite come through. No word on a potential Galaxy Store version, though.

Is is too late for another MOBA heavy-hitter?

Mechanically, Pokémon Unite is a MOBA, aka a multiplayer online battle arena. The format is pretty conservative, at that. Meaning 5v5 battles, team points… if you ever played a round of League of Legends or Dota 2, you’ll know what to expect. And if you haven’t, Pokémon Unite doesn’t seem like a half-bad introduction to the genre.

The game takes place in a new region called Aeos Island that’s more generic than what we’ve come to expect from mainline entries to the series. Its gimmick is in the name – Aeos is a sort of energy Pokémon Unite uses to explain its MOBA-like mechanics. If that sounds similar to Gigantamaxing and the like, that’s probably because it is. But it’s probably safe to say no one ever called upon Pikachu’s Thundershock expecting a political thriller’s worth of world-building. So, it’s probably best not to read too much into it.

Not accounting for the initial installation size, you’re looking at an extra download in the 550-600MB range the first time you start the game, mostly depending on your device resolution. The actual game files have bee compartmentalized pretty effectively, though. In all likelihood, by the time you’re done playing the tutorial, the download will be finished.

While not particularly surprising, we can thankfully confirm Pokémon Unite offers full support for taller aspect ratios characteristic of Samsung’s modern devices. We’re talking everything between 18.5:9 to 19.9:9. And if MOBAs aren’t your thing but you’re still in the mood for a vanilla collect-a-ton, you might be pleased to learn that Pokémon Go just got way less annoying as of earlier this month.

Galaxy A52 5G starts getting September 2021 security update in Europe

Earlier today, Samsung released the latest security patch to the Galaxy Z Flip, Galaxy Z Flip 5G, and the Galaxy A32. The South Korean firm has now released it to the Galaxy A52 5G as well. The LTE version of the Galaxy A52 had received the same security update three weeks ago.

The Galaxy A52 5G is getting a new software update in Bulgaria. It comes with firmware version A526BXXU1AUI4 and includes the September 2021 security patch. Earlier this month, the company had revealed that its latest security patch fixes more than four dozen privacy and security-related vulnerabilities. The update might also include general bug fixes and device stability improvements.

If you are a Galaxy A52 5G user in Bulgaria, you can check for this update by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install. You can also download the latest firmware file from our firmware database and flash it manually. Other European countries could get this update in a matter of days.

Samsung had launched the Galaxy A52 5G earlier this year. It has a faster processor compared to the LTE version of the Galaxy A52. The smartphone debuted with Android 11-based One UI 3 and received the One UI 3.1.1 update a few days ago.

Best sign yet the Galaxy S22 Ultra could have a built-in S Pen slot

Samsung did not release a new Galaxy Note series device this year, disappointing S Pen fans. However, it was being rumored that the Galaxy S22 Ultra could have a built-in S Pen. Now, a new sign has emerged almost confirming that Samsung’s next Galaxy S series flagship will have a built-in slot for the S Pen.

According to our friends at GalaxyClub, the Galaxy S22 Ultra has an S Pen detector. It detects the presence of the S Pen inside the device and is present on all Galaxy Note series devices. Even though the Galaxy S21 Ultra and the Galaxy Z Fold 3 are compatible with the S Pen, they don’t have the S Pen detector because they don’t have a dedicated S Pen slot.

The presence of the S Pen detector inside the Galaxy S22 Ultra points towards the smartphone featuring a dedicated silo to store the S Pen. This is great news for all Galaxy Note series fans. The report also states that the Galaxy S22 and the Galaxy S22+ reportedly lack the S Pen detector.
