Samsung will launch the Blue Coral Galaxy S7 edge in Canada

Samsung will be bringing its recently-announced Blue Coral variant of the Galaxy S7 edge to Canada, reveals popular blog MobileSyrup. The revelation was made in an exclusive statement issued to the online publication on Wednesday. Unfortunately, the firm failed to provide a specific timeframe for the handset’s release. Although, we’re guessing that it’ll launch in the region before the year’s out.

Aside from the new color, which debuted on the now-recalled Galaxy Note 7, the device remains identical both on the inside and outside to the regular Galaxy S7 edge that launched back in March, so it continues to sport a 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display, a Snapdragon 820/Exynos 8890 Octa CPU, 4GB of RAM, 32/64GB of expandable storage, a 12MP rear-facing camera and a 3,600mAh battery.

We first heard about the Blue Coral Galaxy S7 edge a couple of weeks ago when an image of its shell surfaced online. Shortly after, Samsung’s subsidiary in Singapore confirmed that the unit would launch in the first week of November, but didn’t provide any images. Fortunately for us, however, the company’s Taiwanese division was on hand to help as it prematurely released images of the handset last week.

The device was officially announced on Tuesday, November 1.

Samsung Family Hub refrigerator launched in the United Kingdom

Samsung unveiled an unorthodox refrigerator at the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year. The refrigerator is called Family Hub and it’s unlike anything we’ve ever seen before because it has a massive 21.5-inch touchscreen display. Family Hub was first released in the United States and it has slowly been released in other markets. Samsung has now made the Family Hub refrigerator available for purchase in the United Kingdom.

The refrigerator’s 21.5-inch Full HD touchscreen display provides more functionality than you can ever hope to get from such an appliance. It can be used as an interactive whiteboard where the family can share photos, calendars, notes and doodles. It also has an online shopping app through which users can place orders for groceries. Family Hub will soon have access to Samsung Pay in South Korea as well. Samsung’s Family Hub refrigerator is available from John Lewis, AO.com and Currys in the United Kingdom. You can be sure that it’s going to cost a pretty penny, it was priced at $5,600 in the United States. The full-sized version costs £4,499.99 while the single-door fridge freezer version costs £3,000.

Samsung showcases improved 14nm and 10nm technologies for future chipsets

Samsung has been pretty competitive in semiconductor market for quite some time now. The company’s foundry arm already produces 14nm FinFET-based chipsets for the likes of AMD and Qualcomm. Samsung recently announced that it has already started the industry-first mass production of 10nm-based SoC (probably the Exynos 8895 and the Snapdragon 830 which would be used in the Galaxy S8). Now, Samsung has showcased improved 14nm and 10nm fabrication technologies to its customers and partners.

Samsung Electronics is expanding its semiconductor manufacturing technology offerings with the introduction of fourth-generation 14nm (14LPU) and third-generation 10nm (10LPU) to its customers. These new fabrication processes will be used to manufacture next-generation chipsets that are meant to be used in products ranging from smartphones to automobiles. The company presented these new technologies during the Samsung Foundry Forum at its Device Solutions America headquarters earlier today.

The South Korean electronics giant claims that its new 14nm LPU technology delivers higher performance at the same power compared to its third-generation 14nm LPC technology. The company said that its new 14nm technology would be better suited for high-performance and compute-intensive applications. Coming to Samsung’s 10nm LPU offering, the technology will provide area reduction compared to previous generation (10LPE and 10LPP) processes, which means that 10nm LPU-based chipsets would be even smaller in size.

Ben Suh, Senior Vice President of foundry marketing at Samsung Electronics, said, “Samsung is very confident with our technology definitions that provide design advantages on an aggressive process with manufacturability considerations. We have received tremendous positive market feedback and are looking forward to expanding our leadership in the advanced process technology space.” Process design kits for 14LPU and 10LPU technologies will be available to customers during the second quarter of 2017.

Samsung also updated its customers at the event regarding its plans to offer chips based on 7nm EUV technology and showcased wafer based on the new process. Samsung’s rival TSMC is currently offering 16nm FinFET technology to customers including Apple (for A10 Fusion SoC), but it has already promised that it would start offering 10nm-based chips by the end of 2016 and 7nm-based chips in 2017. ARM has even announced 10nm-based Artemis CPU core and a single-core GPU based on TSMC’s 10nm technology as a proof of concept.

Samsung shutting down OnCircle next month

Samsung added a new feature to People edge on the Galaxy S6 edge+ called OnCircle. It allowed users to send images, pokes and emoticons to People edge contacts but we simply found it to be a useless feature. The initial setup process required users to be on a cellular connection so that their phone number could be activated for OnCircle and the actual process of sending all of them to contacts was long so users would have found it easy to interact with them through conventional chat apps. It appears to have finally dawned on Samsung as the company has confirmed it’s going to shut down the OnCircle service next month.

Samsung has rolled out a new update for People edge today, the changelog confirms that this update adds a service expiration notice popup for OnCircle. The popup confirms that OnCircle is going to be shut down on December 16 and that this is being done due to “a change in internal policy.” Even though OnCircle will no longer be supported, users can keep using People edge they way they always have.

Patent application shows Samsung has dreamt up a Gear 360-like compact projector

A recently published South-Korean patent application reveals that Samsung could be working on a compact projector that resembles the Gear 360. Samsung is slowly but steadily working on expanding its Gear line-up. A possible addition to the series is a device pictured in a patent application published today. We see a compact, round body that houses a small beamer. According to the document, it can be used on surfaces like a table or a wall, but also on the windshield of a car.

samsung-gear-projector-1 samsung-gear-projector-2 samsung-gear-projector-4 samsung-gear-projector-8 samsung-gear-projector-9

Also, it is possible to combine multiple devices in order to project one larger image. These devices can be controlled from, obviously, a single smartphone or tablet, but multiple linked devices can also be managed using multiple phones. Samsung even envisions such a beamer being equipped with a small camera and an infrared sensor for the detection of hand or pen movement. This more or less turns the projection into a gesture-based interface.

Of course, as is so often the case with patent applications, the ideas showcased here are not necessarily close to being turned into an actual product. Though published today, the original application was filed back in April 2015. While we could imagine a device like this fitting neatly into the existing Gear product series, there are no indications of such a ‘Gear Projector’ becoming commercially available anytime soon.

[Poll] Is Samsung too slow in rolling out monthly security updates?

Google started focusing on providing regular security patches to Android devices ever since the Stagefright bug was discovered. Even Samsung promised that it would roll out monthly security patches to its smartphones. However, we’ve noticed that Samsung isn’t fulfilling its promise.

The South Korean smartphone giant has been releasing monthly security patches only in a few markets. In other markets, the security patches are either not being rolled out until the end of the month or not being rolled out at all. Oddly, the company is rolling out regular security patches only to mid-range devices in some markets like India, but not to the high-end ones.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Samsung starts distributing a much-needed maintenance update for the Galaxy Note Edge in Europe

Samsung has today started rolling out a beefy maintenance update for the unlocked model of the Galaxy Note Edge in Europe. The upgrade is identical to the release that the firm began distributing for the Galaxy Note 4 in the region a little over a week ago, bringing a flurry of bug fixes, stability improvements and speed optimizations to the handset, as well as all of the fixes included in the October security patch.

The full changelog can be seen below:

  • Battery optimization
  • Improved performance through efficient memory management
  • Stability Improvements
  • Bug Fixes

Some Gear S2 owners are experiencing issues with email notifications after installing the latest Gear Manager update

Samsung recently started rolling out a rather hefty update for its Gear Manager application. However, it doesn’t look like things are going as smoothly as the company would have hoped. Several Gear S2 owners have taken to the Android Central forums to complain that they’re unable to view incoming emails on their smartwatch after installing the upgrade on their companion smartphone.

Prior to installing the update, users received a notification on their watch displaying the date, time, subject and the first couple of sentences when a new email surfaced in their inbox. However, the wearable is now reportedly displaying an alert saying that it “can’t show the email for security reasons” and that users should  attempt to “view it on [their] phone” instead.

It’s currently unclear whether the glitch is affecting all email accounts. Although, one user has reported that notifications are being delivered in the standard format for his Gmail and Outlook accounts, but are not for Exchange. After having a discussion with his IT guys, he was able to confirm that “nothing has changed over the last few days on their end,” which means that it must be a problem that Samsung introduced with the update.

Galaxy S8′s intelligent assistant might be called Bixby

Samsung announced its acquisition of Viv Labs last month, it’s an artificial intelligence startup founded by the people that created Siri. Viv Labs has created a unique, open artificial intelligence platform which enables third-party developers to build conversational assistants like Siri, the platform also enables them to integrate a natural language-based interface in apps and services. It has since been rumored that the Galaxy S8 is going to feature an AI assistant powered by this startup’s technology.

The company has filed for a trademark in South Korea, it seeks protection of the word “Bixby,” the application details that this brand will be used for “computer software for personal information management,” “computer application software for smartphones, mobile telephones, portable computers and tablet computers, Namely, software used to operate voice recognition system” and “computer software for enabling hands-free use of a mobile phone through voice recognition.”

It’s obviously just speculation right now that the Galaxy S8′s intelligent assistant might be called Bixby but the timing is what makes the whole thing seem plausible. These trademark applications do have a way of tipping us about new services before they’re actually launched so I wouldn’t rule out the possibility completely yet. Samsung is due to unveil the Galaxy S8 in February next year.

Updated Gear Manager app brings improved UI and Gear S3 compatibility

Samsung recently started taking pre-orders for its newest smartwatch, the Gear S3, in some countries. To that end, the company has also released a new version of its Gear Manager app, adding support for the Gear S3. The update started rolling out today, and it also brings in a bunch of improvements as well as bug fixes.

Apart from adding support for the Gear S3, the new update brings the look and feel of the app in-line with that of the Grace UX. The app is now divided into two tabs: Info and Settings. The Info tab now shows current battery level of the connected Gear device. You can also check app-wise battery consumption since last full charge, which makes it easier to find misbehaving apps. In our case, we discovered that the Uber app on our Gear S2 was misbehaving and randomly launching all by itself.

The Settings tab is similar to the earlier version, but looks cleaner, thanks to better use of the white space and new icons. The Info tab also has shortcuts to suggested apps and watch faces. If you haven’t received the update yet, check for it manually in the Play Store or Galaxy Apps store.
