Galaxy S7 rumored to feature 20-megapixel camera with RAW support

There have been conflicting reports recently about the Galaxy S7 camera, it was even reported at one point that Samsung is in talks with Sony to get the camera module it has used in the Xperia Z5. Another report has claimed that Samsung will go with a 12-megapixel rear camera but with a larger 1/2-inch sensor, that coupled with the larger pixel size would enable the new flagship to perform beyond expectations, a new trademark application from Samsung seemed to corroborate that theory. Now we’re hearing that the Galaxy S7 will instead feature a 20-megapixel camera on the back that’s capable of shooting in RAW format.

This information hasn’t been backed up by multiple sources as yet so it should be taken with a grain of salt. It’s claimed that the Galaxy S7 will have a 20-megapixel rear camera with RAW support. A Pro mode may also be onboard that offers advanced options for folks who like to tinker with the settings before they take a picture, and it may even have a new video recorder mode with advanced functionality. Aside from the obvious software improvements all this rumor tells us is that Samsung might consider moving up to a 20-megapixel camera. There’s no confirmation from the company on this matter just yet, it may not reveal the truth until February 2016 when it’s expected to unveil the Galaxy S7.

Leaked pictures of the Galaxy A3 and the Galaxy A5 2015 edition show off a new design

Word on the street is that Samsung will soon launch the successors to the Galaxy A3 and the Galaxy A5, two smartphones which really signalled the company’s intent to bring premium construction to its mid-range lineup. The latest leak suggests that the Galaxy A3 and the Galaxy A5 2015 edition will feature improved specifications as well as a new design.

The design changes are quite obvious, new handsets have the speaker grill at the bottom and the shape of the rear camera and LED flash as well as the positioning have also been changed. From the looks of it Samsung may have gone with a glass back for the two new handsets which will contribute to the premium feel that these smartphones shoot for. The Galaxy A3 2015 edition is believed to feature a 4.7-inch HD display, a 1.5Ghz quad-core processor with 1.5GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, a 13-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front camera. On the other hand the Galaxy A7 2015 edition may feature a 5.2-inch 1080p display with an 1.6GHz Exynos 7 Octa processor under the hood coupled with 2GB RAM and the same camera setup. Both handsets are likely to be powered by Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. A fingerprint sensor might be onboard as well which would mean that these devices might even come with support for Samsung Pay. Samsung has not yet revealed when it intends to launch the Galaxy A3 and the Galaxy A5 2015 edition.

Here’s another user-friendly change Samsung has made to Android

Android has always been like a desktop operating system in many ways, when you look at how it allows you to customize your experience as you like it. One of the best things about Android is how it allows users to set a default app for various actions, if a device has multiple apps installed that can carry out a particular action. Have two different video players installed? The OS will show you a popup when you click on a video to allow you to select which of those video players you would like to use. Users get an option to either use a particular app once, or set it as default for the action that brought up these options.

With the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, Samsung made its software a tad more user-friendly by replacing icons with text to make it easier for users to understand what a particular icon does. With the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+, the company has made yet another change that makes the devices slightly easier to use for the average Joe.

On the latest version of TouchWiz, you will no longer see the OS offering you an option to set an app as default for any action. Instead, the app you choose the first time will be set as default forever. If you install another app that supports that action, the popup to select a particular app will come up once again, letting you set a default for the next time you install a compatible app (or uninstall it.) In some cases, a default app never gets set (for example, selecting the Photo attachment in a WhatsApp chat will always bring up the app selection popup), but for the most part it happens the very first time.

For the power user, this might see like a bad change for one of Android’s best features, but for the general consumers, it’s a pretty good move. There have been too many times when I’ve noticed that some of my friends and family have never ticked the “Set default” (or “Use as default”) for any action. They simply select one of the compatible apps every time the popup shows up, instead of taking the time to read what the popup says and actually set a particular app as default.

You have probably seen people around you do the same, and I personally think it’s nice that Samsung has modified this Android feature in this manner. The company makes it easy to clear default apps as well, from the Settings » Applications » Default applications menu. Again, power users will probably cry foul over what Samsung has done, but it’s all good in the grand scheme of making things simpler for users, all while keeping all the power and functionality of the operating system intact.

Exclusive: Samsung working on entry-level activity tracker

Samsung has released a bunch of wearable devices over the past couple of years including fitness trackers and smartwatches. The South Korean electronics giant recently released its first smartwatch – the Gear S2 – with a  circular display and a refreshing design. While most of its wares were targeted at the mid-range or high-end segments, Samsung is now looking to make wearables available to a wider swath of audience by launching an entry-level activity tracker.

The SM-R150 is a new wearable device that Samsung is currently working on. The device is being called Triathlon internally, and this points towards an activity or fitness tracking device. We believe that the device could offer a similar feature-set as that of Xiaomi’s Mi Band, which sells for just $15 in China and India. Not much is known about the specifications of this device right now, but it might not feature a heart-rate sensor considering that its model number is lower than the Gear Fit (SM-R350).

Samsung has also released the S Health and the Samsung Gear apps for non-Samsung smartphones, so this new activity tracker might be compatible with all Android smartphones. Who knows, Samsung might even make it compatible with iPhones to increase its adoption. Right now, Fitbit, Misfit, and Xiaomi control the lion’s share of the market in the entry-evel activity tracker segment, but Samsung’s entry may change the whole segment altogether.

Samsung lets Portugese football fans watch the sport through the Gear VR

In yet another example of how virtual reality can be an extremely immersive experience for consumers, Samsung recently let select football fans in Portugal watch their favorite sport through the lens of the Gear VR. The Korean manufacturer teamed up with Portuguese cable operator NOS, SPORT TV, broadcasting specialists Mediapro and the Portuguese Professional Football League to stream the match between FC Porto and SL Benfica live, by using five 360 degree cameras to capture everything and turn it into virtual reality.

The cameras were placed at various locations in the stadium, allowing viewers to choose different vantage points throughout the match. We will have to take Samsung’s word for it, but the experience was apparently very impressive for the viewers who donned the Gear VR. To be honest, if you have the proper VR content, a virtual reality headset can make things considerably more immersive than the usual flat displays, and making the world’s most popular sport available in virtual reality is something we will see becoming quite popular in the years to come.

In addition to the football match, Samsung gave the VR treatment to a surfing event in Portugal. Catching the waves would no doubt be more interesting up close considering most of us can’t just take a surfboard and head into the ocean, though there’s no video of how Samsung managed the surfing event through their cameras. The Gear VR will become available for regular consumers by the end of this year, and it will be very interesting to see if channels and world sport organizations will be jumping on the virtual reality bandwagon anytime soon.

Samsung Galaxy Golden 3 certified by TENAA

The successor to the Galaxy Golden 2 was leaked last month, and it has now been certified by Chinese regulatory authority TENAA. The SM-W2016 could be released as Galaxy Golden 3, since the model number of the Galaxy Golden is SM-W2014 and the model number of the Galaxy Golden 2 is SM-W2015.

The Galaxy Golden 3 features two Super AMOLED displays, one on the outside and one on the inside (since it’s a clamshell device), measuring 3.9 inches diagonally with a resolution of  1280 x 768 pixels. It runs Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, and is similar to the Galaxy S6 in terms of internal hardware specifications. It is equipped with an Exynos 7420 processor, 3GB RAM, 64GB internal storage, a 16-megapixel primary camera, and a 5-megapixel secondary camera.

The SM-W2016 measures 120.4 × 61 × 15.1mm, weighs 204 grams, and comes with 4G LTE bands that are used in China. The Galaxy Golden 2 was launched last year by the South Korean smartphone giant, but it was never released outside the Chinese market, so we should actually wait till the official announcement from Samsung.

Samsung Galaxy View is available for purchase in the US

Consumers in the US looking for a device that is not a tablet and not a TV either can purchase the Galaxy View in the country. The “movable display” (yeah, we will be using quotes for Samsung’s new product category for the forseeable future) can be bought from various stores, including Best Buy, Amazon and B&H, and directly from Samsung’s website as well. Best Buy and Amazon have the device in stock at the moment, and Best Buy will also give you one if you walk into its brick and mortar stores.

As for the price, the Galaxy View will cost you $599 for the Wi-Fi model. You can’t buy the cellular model yet, but if you really want an 18.4-inch tablet with access to mobile networks, there’s no telling how long you will have to wait. Check out the source link if you wish to order the Galaxy View, and also check out our hands-on experience with the humongous tablet before you hit that buy button.
