Analyst expects Samsung to ship 12 million Galaxy Note 7 units this year

The Galaxy Note 7 is finally official and Samsung can now get down to the business of selling this flagship smartphone. This means that analysts can now get their predictions in for the year and forecast how the handset is going to perform in the market. The first such forecast comes from an analyst at Hyundai Securities who believes that Samsung could ship as many as 12 million units of the Galaxy Note 7 in the second half of this year.

If this figure is anything to go by it suggests that analysts might not expect the Galaxy Note 7 to perform as well as the Galaxy S7 edge did. Recent market data estimates that Samsung shipped an impressive 13.3 million units of the Galaxy S7 edge in the first half of this year making it the best selling Android smartphone in the world during this time. Sure enough, the Hyundai Securities analyst Kim Dong-won expects the Galaxy S7 to continue selling strong and also suggests that we might see a modest decline in Samsung’s overall smartphone sales for the remainder of 2016 even as he agrees that the Galaxy Note 7 will occupy demand for premium smartphones because Apple’s new iPhone is released next month. He has also forecasted a 10 percent decrease to 3.9 trillion in the third quarter operating profit of Samsung’s mobile business.

[Poll] What Galaxy Note 7 color shoud you pick?

The Galaxy Note 7 is an impressive smartphone, chock full of the latest technologies and software features. A lot of you are probably waiting for the moment you can pre-order Samsung’s latest flagship in your country; some of you might already have decided on the color you want, but we’re sure some of you are wondering which Note 7 color would be the best to go with. Well, we’re here to help.

The Galaxy Note 7 will be available in silver, gold, black and blue. Let’s start with black. This is probably the most traditional color option for any smartphone; I’m not sure about others, but I find black to be the sexiest color of them all. Plus, with a device like the Note 7, which many will use for watching videos, black is the only color that will recede into the background and let you put full focus on Samsung’s beautiful Super AMOLED panel. Since there is no white color option this time around, black is also the best bet to make sure those fingerprints on the phone won’t be easily visible.

Gold and silver are the worst when it comes to showing you your fingerprints in all their glory, and blue is probably going to be similarly bad. But while the black can be sexy, gold, silver and blue are what you should get if you want a phone that looks beautiful (of course, what is sexy and what is beautiful can be a subjective thing). In fact, that Blue Coral Note 7, which comes with a golden metal rim, is just amazing to look at when you talk about the beauty factor. For those who want their phone to look both stylish and a thing of beauty, the silver color would be the right pick.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 - 14

What about scratches, those little annoyances that Samsung’s glass and metal build picks up quite easily? Well, the black Note 7 should be the worst at bringing those scratches to the fore, but conventional wisdom doesn’t always work when it comes to phones. The black Galaxy S7 edge was less impervious to visible scratches than the silver, and that will probably be the case with the Note 7 as well. Of course, no color will let you hide those scratch marks if light is hitting the phone at the right angles.

Choosing the right color for a new phone can be confusing, and in the end it all comes down to your preferences. But each color has its own pros and cons, so here’s the basic gist: Grab the black Note 7 if media consumption is your top priority, Blue Coral if you want a unique color that really brings out the beauty of Samsung’s premium glass design, or the silver for a futuristic look. I’m not sure what to say about the gold version. It will make for a flashy color as tradition would dictate, but I think the blue Note 7 makes the case less compelling for the gold Note 7.

There’s also the fact that some of these colors might not launch in every market. This actually makes the choice easier; if your favorite color doesn’t show up in your region, you will, however, have to first get over the disappointment that would bring. We have heard the Blue Coral option will launch worldwide, but at this point we’re not going to be too happy unless Samsung confirms the same.

What do you think? What paint job will you be going with when you buy the Galaxy Note 7? Let us know through the poll and do leave a comment down below.

Galaxy S7 edge ruled the Android smartphone market in the first half of this year

Everything has been about the Galaxy Note 7 today and rightly so, it’s one of the best Note flagships that Samsung has ever released, but I would ask you to turn your attention to the Galaxy S7 edge for a moment. You may have already heard that the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge performed spectacularly well in the market after launch and allowed Samsung to post its most profitable quarter in two years. Latest data shows that the Galaxy S7 edge actually ruled the global Android smartphone market as it was the best selling Android smartphone in the first half of this year.

Data from Strategy Analytics shows that Samsung shipped more than 13.3 million units of the Galaxy S7 edge during the first half of 2016. That’s not all. Samsung handsets actually took the top three positions with the Galaxy J2 coming in second place with 13 million units shipped and the Galaxy S7 coming third with shipments of 11.8 million units. The Galaxy S7 edge remains popular in countless markets across the globe even though it has been out for over six months now. Samsung forecasted in its earnings release that the Galaxy S7 series’ momentum will continue in the second half of this year and that its mobile business will also be aided by the Galaxy Note 7 which may very well prove to be one of the best selling Android handsets in the second half of 2016.

Samsung and Amazon make Galaxy Note 7 the first smartphone to support HDR streaming

The Galaxy Note 7 is a phone of many firsts. It’s the first handset to feature Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5 and it’s also the first Note that’s completely water resistant. That’s not all though as the Galaxy Note 7 is also the first smartphone to support content streaming in High Dynamic Range or HDR. To make this possible Samsung teamed up with Amazon which owns and operates one of the few online streaming services that offer HDR content streaming.

Content streaming is one of the biggest uses of smartphones these days and customers keep demanding a better viewing experience on mobile. Even though HDR is the gold standard for TV picture quality it’s still limited to expensive TVs like the ones Samsung makes. To make this possible, Samsung took its powerful TV chipsets and adapted them to mobile. Samsung’s new mobile DNIe chip optimizes battery life while HDR video is being played on the Galaxy Note 7 and powers Samsung’s most advanced imaging processing engine to date. With hardware out of the way, Samsung needed a partner that could provide HDR content streaming and it found that in Amazon. The retail giant’s Amazon Prime video streaming service has a growing library of HDR content which can be streamed on-demand by Prime subscribers in all its HDR glory on the Galaxy Note 7.

Galaxy Note 7′s Galaxy Game Pack features four Vulkan API-ready games

The Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge happen to be the first smartphones in the world to support Vulkan APIs from the get go. Samsung did a good job in tuning its flagship smartphones for mobile gamers and has often reminded the public just how good this year’s flagship handsets are at mobile gaming. This is why it’s not surprising to find out that the Galaxy Note 7 supports Vulkan APIs as well and that the Galaxy Game Pack being offered with this handset features four Vulkan API-ready games.

The Galaxy Game Pack is being offered exclusively to all buyers of the Galaxy Note 7 from August 20 all the way up to January 2017. The pack includes games and in-app purchases worth $400 in the Google Play Store, it features more than a dozen titles. Need for Speed No Limits, Hit, Vainglory, Olympus Rising, Nonstop Knight, Empire: Four Kingdoms, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, MARVEL Contest of Champions, Asphalt 8: Airborne, Hungry Shark World, Angry Birds Pop Bubble Shooter, Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes, Sims City Free Play and Clash of Kings are included in the Galaxy Game Pack.

Only Need for Speed No Limits, Hit, Vainglory and Olympus Rising are the Vulkan API-ready titles. Users will immediately notice the improved graphics quality and performance as well as the stability of frame rates in these games as opposed to the others.

Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2016 live stream replay now available on YouTube

Samsung talked about all of the different ways people could tune into the Galaxy Unpacked 2016 event in a blog post yesterday with one of the easiest being the live stream on YouTube. However, when the event kicked off a few hours ago, the live stream crashed. Quite a lot of people were unable to follow the proceedings live in New York because either they could not get the live stream to work at all or they just kept seeing an error soon after the stream start playing. Social media was awash with complaints from Samsung fans who just couldn’t tune in. Well, you’ve probably heard about everything that was announced at the event by now, but if you’re still curious to see how the Galaxy Note 7 was announced you can now watch the replay of the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2016 live stream on the company’s official YouTube channel. Samsung will open up the Galaxy Note 7′s iris scanner to third-party apps soon

The Galaxy Note 7 is Samsung’s first consumer handset to feature an iris scanner. It’s currently used to control access to the device and to the new Secure Folder which lets users protect their data, media, documents and apps behind this additional layer of security. Samsung is also working with major financial institutions to provide a safer mobile banking experience to users but soon the iris scanner will become more useful when it’s opened up to third-party developers.

Samsung has confirmed that it’s going to release a special API for developers within its Samsung Pass program that will enable them to leverage the iris scanner for their applications. This means that the iris scanner could then be used to protect a password managing app or their favorite video streaming service. The possibilities are endless here and it’s great that Samsung has confirmed right off the bat that it’s not going to keep the iris scanner closed. This will give developers ample time to think how they will go about integrating this new biometric security feature in their apps for the Galaxy Note 7.

The S Pen on the Galaxy Note 7 cannot be inserted the wrong way

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5 got some flak last year after some users discovered that the S Pen stylus could go in the wrong way and potentially damage the innards of the device.

It’s clear that Samsung will have none of that this year as the S Pen stylus on the Galaxy Note 7 doesn’t go in unless inserted correctly. In fact, the stylus stops at about the 2-3mm mark when you try to put it back the wrong way. So there’s very little chance of damaging the S Pen silo while using the S Pen.

We should also consider the fact that the S Pen, this time, is IP68 certified water resistant as well. This makes it even more durable compared to the predecessor. One would say that the Galaxy Note 7 is now somewhat idiot-proof.

Reports of faulty S Pen silos on the Galaxy Note 5 started making the rounds shortly after the device was released. Samsung went into damage control mode and made some simple suggestions to those affected by this issue, while some user discovered tweaks also started flooding online portals.

The issue became so widespread that Samsung started offering warning labels with new models. Following more reports of this, Samsung made some under the hood tweaks to the design of the smartphone.

AT&T to sell the Galaxy Note 7 on August 19, free Gear S2 included

AT&T has announced the sales of the Galaxy Note 7 as expected. The carrier will start taking pre-orders for the handset starting August 3 i.e. tomorrow and fulfill them on August 19. The launch date seems to be consistent with what Samsung mentioned in its press release, so we’re not really surprised.

The handset will be offered with AT&T Next Every Year in 24-monthly installments of $36.67 each. You can also get the handset for 30 monthly payments of $29.34 each using AT&T Next.

What’s interesting is that Samsung will offer the Gear S2 for free with the smartphone, although you are required to sign a two-year agreement with the device. If you’re not interested in the Gear S2 or if you already have one, you can also opt to get the Galaxy Tab E for $0.99. AT&T mentions that both devices are compatible with NumberSync, so you can pair either the Gear S2 or the Galaxy Tab E with your primary phone number.

Lastly, the carrier will also offer $695 in AT&T Next credits with the purchase of your Galaxy Note 7 to get a second unit for yourself or your loved ones. Overall, it looks like the carrier is offering pretty exciting promos to go with Samsung’s latest flagship. Of course, some buyers of the Galaxy Note 7 will have better choices of freebies, but AT&T fans will have to do the best with what they get. The handset will be available for purchase both in stores and from AT&T’s official site.

Samsung Pass enables safer mobile banking using the Galaxy Note 7′s iris scanner

We tend to do a lot of stuff using our mobile devices these days, many of us use banking applications on our smartphones and tablets on a daily basis despite being aware of the potential security issues that particularly plague Android-powered devices. Samsung wants to make those concerns a thing of the past. It announced a new security system today called Samsung Pass which will enable Galaxy Note 7 users to access mobile banking more securely using their handset’s iris scanner.

The Galaxy Note 7 is Samsung’s first consumer handset to feature an iris scanner and it’s going to use this technology for more than just unlocking the device. Samsung Pass will allow users to access mobile banking and do other sensitive tasks after being authenticated using the iris scanner. The company is working with major financial institutions like Citibank, Bank of America, US Bank and others to link the iris scanner to their mobile banking apps. That’s all that the company has revealed about Samsung Pass at this point in time, we are bound to hear more details about it in the coming weeks and months.

Galaxy Note 7 is the very first smartphone to use Gorilla Glass 5

It was reported a couple of days ago that the Galaxy Note 7 might be the first smartphone ever to use Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and that has been confirmed today. It is indeed the very first smartphone to make use of the rough and tough Gorilla Glass 5. This happens to be the strongest glass that Corning has ever created so it’s another vote of confidence for Samsung’s latest flagship smartphone.

Corning says that the Gorilla Glass 5 is capable of surviving drops from 5.25 feet on rough surfaces in up to 80 percent of cases. Samsung has used Gorilla Glass 5 to protect the Galaxy Note 7′s beautiful 5.7-inch dual-edge curved display as well as its back so you can be sure that it’s not as delicate as it looks. If you’re wondering just how the handset holds up against drops just wait for a couple of days as drop test videos are bound to show up on YouTube in the near future.

Samsung Cloud launched, Galaxy Note 7 owners get 15GB free storage

Prior to Samsung’s event today in New York City we reported many times on the possibility of the company launching a new cloud storage service called Samsung Cloud and that’s precisely what it confirmed on stage today. Now it’s not looking to rival Dropbox or Google Drive with Samsung Cloud, the service is actually more of an extension of the Smart Switch feature which makes it easy for users to transfer data to and from their Samsung devices.

Samsung Cloud will aid users by regularly backing up the device’s data including but not limited to apps, settings, files and layouts regularly to the cloud. This means that Smart Switch will have a recent copy of the Galaxy Note 7 should users ever require one. Samsung is giving all Galaxy Note 7 owners 15GB of free Samsung Cloud storage, it hasn’t said if there will be paid options but it’s likely that they will be introduced at a later date. It’s unclear at this point in time whether Samsung will enable users to access Samsung Cloud’s 15GB free storage for general usage or whether the storage will exclusively be limited to automatic device backups.

Specs comparison: Samsung Galaxy Note 7 vs. Galaxy Note 5

The Galaxy Note 7 finally became official today, after months of leaks and rumors that were sometimes true and sometimes completely off the mark. The Note 7 is a big step forward in Samsung’s Galaxy Note lineup, and even with the Note 5 just a year old, it packs in enough goodies to be a major upgrade. We will be delving deep into the Galaxy Note 7 in the coming days, but as is our custom, let’s take a look at what the newest Note brings to the table in terms of hardware specifications compared to its predecessor.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 vs. Galaxy Note 4 specs comparison: A worthy upgrade

The Galaxy Note 4 still has a lot of fans inspite of being two years old. Long time fans of the Galaxy Note series didn’t upgrade to the Galaxy Note 5 when it came out last year because it lacked a microSD card slot and a removable battery (European consumers, of course, didn’t even have the option to). However, Samsung has brought back the microSD card slot with the Galaxy Note 7.

The Galaxy Note 7 not only improves S Pen features, but it also comes with a lot of hardware upgrades. It comes with the newer Exynos 8890 (and Snapdragon 820 in some markets) processor, higher RAM and storage, and a better front-facing camera and a rear camera with low-light imaging miles ahead of the Note 4′s. The software is newer and faster and supports themes as well.

There’s no removable battery in the Galaxy Note 7, but its sealed battery has the highest capacity in all the Galaxy Note series smartphones. Moreover, it is compatible with wireless fast charging. The touch-based fingerprint sensor is quicker and more reliable, and also supports Samsung Pay.

You can have a look at the comparison table below to know all the areas where the Galaxy Note 7 improves over the Galaxy Note 4 in terms of specifications. All in all, the Galaxy Note 7 is a huge upgrade compared to the two-year-old Galaxy Note 4, and if you’ve been eyeing to upgrade from the latter, this is the time.

Hands-on with the Samsung Galaxy Note 7

It was only a matter of a minutes ago that Samsung unveiled the latest iteration in its Galaxy Note lineup, the Note 7. If you’ve been following our Twitter page, I’m sure you already know that we’ve been reporting live from the event and have had an opportunity to get our hands on the device, so it’s only fitting that we bring you a brief report on our initial impressions after playing around with the handset for a little bit. It’s important to note, however, that this isn’t a review by any means, and it’s perfectly possible that our opinions could change between now and the time that our comprehensive feedback goes live later this month.

So, without further ado, I present to you our first impressions on the Galaxy Note 7.

Design

Samsung has raised the bar once again with the design of the Galaxy Note 7. The device features a 5.7-inch curved screen that wraps around the aluminium side frame at almost 90-degrees, which creates the illusion that there’s no bezel. This results in the handset being perfectly symmetrical, giving it a more professional look. The South Korean firm has also managed to cut the weight of the unit by 2g when compared to the Galaxy Note 5. Although this raw figure may not seem like a lot, you can actually feel the difference when holding both units in your hand. This is something that I found to be very surprising as it’s rare to hold two generations of a device in the palms of your hands and be able to feel a contrast in weight.

Display

As I mentioned earlier, the Galaxy Note 7 sports a 5.7-inch Always On curved display. The panel itself is, just like the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, Super AMOLED, and has a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels. However, it seems like Samsung has made some changes to the screen behind the scenes as it appears to be significantly brighter and more vivid than its former flagship smartphones. The viewing angles have also been significantly improved, which is likely a by-product of the display being almost 25% more rounded. If you have the device propped up at a 45-degree angle, you can clearly see everything that’s on the screen — and that’s pretty impressive, to say the least.

Camera

The Galaxy Note 7 packs a 12-megapixel rear-facing camera with a f/1.7 aperture. It’s equipped with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and the Dual Pixel autofocus system, which uses all of the camera’s pixels to focus on a subject. Unfortunately, we were unable to extract the images we captured on the handset during our time with it, but they all appeared to be crystal clear. Colors were bright, and we’re pleased to report that it performed very well in the low-light environment that was the hands-on section at the gorgeous building where the conference was being held in Central London. We will, of course, be bringing you a more detailed overview of the shooter in our full review.

Similar to the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, the Galaxy Note 7′s 5-megapixel front-facing camera comes equipped with a flurry of different software optimizations designed to improve not only the quality, but remove blemishes in pictures you take of yourself (commonly known as selfies). I had a little play around with this feature, and was blown away by how it managed to gloss over all of the imperfections in my skin. It even matched my pale complexion perfectly, which is a task that the aforementioned handsets failed to do.

Iris Scanner

Samsung has introduced an innovative iris scanner for its latest handset in the Note range. During the event, I was a little skeptical about how this hardware would function in day-to-day life seeing as it’s a first for the mass market. However, my fears were quickly diminished once I’d configured a test unit to recognize my iris. Blazing fast is truly an understatement. It’s really mind blowing. The second you swipe up on the lock screen, the device instantly unlocks. The more curious amongst us are probably wondering if you could unlock the device using a photograph of an iris. The simple answer is no. The firm has developed an innovative piece of technology that’s designed to detect a natural glare of light that’s only present in a living eye, making it impossible to unlock the handset with a 3D render of an eyeball, let alone a 2D image.

S Pen

A new Note deserves a new S Pen, and that’s exactly what Samsung has equipped the Galaxy Note 7 with. I’ll openly admit that the Galaxy Note 5 was very restricted when it came to S Pen functionality. That’s an issue of the past now, though, as Samsung has adapted the Google API to provide users with the facility to use their S Pen to translate words from any screen. New software also permits users to create GIFs from any clip that exceeds 15-seconds in length. This can be from a whole range of sources, including movie being streamed from Netflix or even a YouTube video.

Software

The Note 7 runs Android 6.0.1 out of the box, and Samsung has built in a couple of new features that aren’t present on existing Galaxy devices (but could make their way to these devices through software updates). Secure Folder is an upgrade to Private Mode – it hides your personal files and even things like banking apps somewhere that is “not part of the OS”. We’re not sure what that means, but Samsung is promising a high level of security. The Note 7 also merges apps like Action memo, Scrapbook and S Note into a single app called Samsung Notes. Streaming videos in HDR is another new feature, and Samsung says it has also streamlined the camera interface (although we didn’t get time to see a difference).

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 goes official with USB Type-C, iris scanner, water-resistant body and more

Samsung has officially taken the wraps off its latest flagship, the Galaxy Note 7. The Galaxy Note 7 is a notable leap forward for Samsung’s Note lineup – it is the first Galaxy Note device with an Edge display that curves on both sides, and also the first to have a water-resistant body. At first glance, the Note 7 might look like a Galaxy S7 edge with a bigger screen and the S Pen, but it brings many new features to the table for Samsung’s smartphone lineup.

The switch to a USB Type-C port has actually happened with the Note 7, as we had exclusively revealed earlier this year. Also on-board is an iris scanner for enhanced security and for quick payments through Samsung Pay. The iris scanner has a ton of restrictions, but when it works, it works extremely quickly. Of course, the fact that the Note 7 is resistant to water and dust is a major bonus, and the S Pen will work even when the screen is wet. The Galaxy Note 7 is also the first Samsung device to come with 64GB of internal storage out of the box, with the microSD slot making a return after it went missing on the Galaxy Note 5.

The Galaxy Note 7 has a 5.7-inch Edge Super AMOLED display of Quad HD resolution. There’s Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on top for damage protection, which is a first for any smartphone in the industry. Under the hood lies an octa-core Exynos 8890 processor or a quad-core Snapdragon 820, depending on market (the US, China and Japan are likely to get the Snapdragon variant). 6GB of RAM hasn’t made the cut on the Note 7, although that might be a good thing – unless individual apps start using higher memory, 6GB of RAM is only going to be a battery guzzler if more apps are allowed to run in the background.

note-7-1

The S Pen stylus has also gained new functionality. Screen off memo, which lets you take a note simply by removing the S Pen from its slot even when the device is locked, now allows you to pin your notes to the Always On Display feature. There’s also a new translate feature in Air Command – the S Pen can be hovered over foreign text to instantly translate it to the user’s prefered language.

The Galaxy Note 7 comes with a 3,500 mAh battery. It’s a tad smaller than the S7 edge’s but considerably bigger than the Galaxy Note 5′s, and it remains to be seen what kind of battery life it will offer. That USB Type-C port means there should be support for Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0, at least on the Snapdragon model, but the Note 7 will also charge quickly through existing fast chargers. Fast wireless charging support is present as well.

On the imaging front, the Galaxy Note 7 retains the same cameras as the Galaxy S7 lineup – a 12-megapixel camera with Dual Pixel autofocus and f/1.7 aperture at the back, and a 5-megapixel camera with f/1.7 aperture at the front. The device runs Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow out of a box with a visually updated version of TouchWiz, and Android Nougat is likely to arrive sometime later this year or in early 2017.

The Note 7 will go on sale in select markets on August 19th in Blue Coral, Gold Platinum, Silver Titanium and Black Onyx color options (Blue Coral will launch worldwide, if you were wondering). Frankly, we’re rather excited about the Galaxy Note 7 despite the fact that it isn’t as big an upgrade as the rumors had said it would be. Check out our hands-on post for our initial impressions, and do let us know what you think about Samsung’s newest flagship smartphone!

T-Mobile may soon offer $200 off the Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 edge and the Galaxy Note 5

Given that Samsung’s new flagship smartphone will be out soon there will be many customers who would want to pick up one of its existing high-end handsets at a discount and that’s precisely what T-Mobile is looking to capitalize on. A leaked internal memo shows that T-Mobile is planning a new promotion in which it will offer $200 off the Galaxy S7, the Galaxy S7 edge and the Galaxy Note 5.

According to the memo, customers who switch to T-Mobile, port in their number and purchase any one of the handsets mentioned above on an equipment installment plan as well as activate it on a 10GB or higher data plan will get $200 off the device via monthly bill credit. Customers will be able to stack this promotion with T-Mobile’s Carrier Freedom promotion that promises $650 per line via trade-in credit and prepaid MasterCard for trading in an existing smartphone. The memo mentions that this promotion will go live on August 3 just one day after the Galaxy Note 7 is unveiled. T-Mobile is also reportedly going to run a promotion for the Galaxy Note 7 in which it’s going to give pre-order customers a free Gear Fit 2.

Galaxy Note 5 gets July security patch in India

Following the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S7 lineup, Samsung is updating the Galaxy Note 5 with the July security patch in India. This update seems to have arrived over the weekend, and it is around 85MB in size. Other than the security patches for the month of June, the update comes with the usual batch of performance and stability improvements. As expected, the update comes with the security patch dated July 1 and does not include the patch Google released on July 5.

Like every update, this one should show up on your phone of its own accord. You can also download the update by hitting the Download updates manually button in the Settings » About device menu on your Note 5. If you notice anything new after installing the update (which carries build number N920GUBU2BPG1), do let us know in the comments!

Samsung increasing investment in memory chips

As Chinese companies make an aggressive push in the global memory chip market, Samsung is taking steps to ensure that its lead does not erode. It’s investing more resources into the semiconductor business to better compete against Chinese companies who are reportedly being backed by their government.

Samsung has already announced plans to invest $13 billion in plants located in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province. The investment will be used to produce 3-D NAND chips and will enable the company to stay ahead of the competition. The response follows Chinese conglomerate Tsinghua Unigroup’s acquisition of half of XMC – China’s state-run chip manufacturer. Industry analysts view this move as helping China to establish a name for itself in the global memory chip market. Tsinghua Unigroup is expected to set up memory chip factories in China by investing $12 billion while XMC has its own plans to invest as much as $24 billion in a wafer plant. Samsung competitor SK hynix is also boosting its investment in this sector to take on the Chinese rivals.

Samsung’s P/E ratio overtakes Apple’s for the first time

Samsung’s strong performance in the second quarter of this year has renewed investor confidence in the company. Its share price is surging to new record highs aided by its $10 billion stock buyback and for the first time ever, Samsung’s P/E ratio or price-to-earnings ratio has crossed that of its rival Apple. P/E ratio is a way of looking at a company’s value by measuring its current share price relative to its earnings per share. It reflects the dollar amount that an investor can expect to invest in a company so as to receive one dollar of that company’s earnings.

Samsung’s shares are trading at a P/E ratio of 13.41 on the local exchange today while Apple’s P/E ratio remains at about 12.23. The widest gap between the two companies’ P/E ratio was witnessed back in 2013 when Apple’s P/E ratio was 12.14, almost double that of Samsung’s 6.93. The gap has been coming down since then and now Samsung has finally crossed its rival.

Disclaimer: This is not a call on Samsung stock and should not be taken as one, it is merely a commentary on its P/E ratio.

Here’s the Galaxy Note 7′s retail box confirming the device’s specs

When rumors of the Galaxy Note 7 began earlier this year, they painted a pretty picture as far as the specs of the phablet were concerned. From a larger display to 6GB of RAM, we heard it all, until it turned out that the Note 7 wouldn’t be a quantum leap in terms of hardware. We pretty much know all of the specs of the Note 7 at this point, and a leaked picture of the device’s retail box is now offering confirmation of everything we have heard.

The Galaxy Note 7 has 4GB of RAM like the Galaxy Note 5, but on the storage front we get 64GB out of the box and microSD expansion (there might even be a 32GB variant for some markets, although that has not been confirmed). The phone is water-resistant with an IP68 rating like the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, and shares specs like a 12-megapixel rear camera, 5-megapixel front camera, octa-core Exynos processor (apparently the Exynos 8890 instead of an 8893), and Cat .12 LTE connectivity. The screen remains the same size at 5.7-inches, but as we all know, it is now an Edge display and a regular flat-screen version does not exist.

Other specs of the Note 7, which the box doesn’t mention, include a 3,500 mAh battery, an iris scanner, USB Type-C port, the S Pen stylus (which is said to work underwater), and Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. Stay tuned for more details later today as the Note 7 gets announced at Samsung’s Unpacked event in New York.
