Samsung says Galaxy Z Fold 2’s foldable display has world’s smallest curvature

The Galaxy Z Fold 2, which was fully detailed earlier this month, comes with a new and improved foldable screen. It is not only larger compared to the screen used on the Galaxy Fold, but also comes with better screen protection. Now, Samsung Display, Samsung’s display manufacturing arm, has announced that its new-generation foldable OLED panel has the world’s smallest curvature.

According to Samsung Display, the curvature of its new OLED panel is just 1.4R. Its curvature is the lowest among all the curved displays that have been commercialized to date. The company has managed to reduce the curvature even further using proprietary foldable display optimization technologies. It is a 7.6-inch OLED panel with a resolution of 2208×1768 pixels, and it is covered by Ultra Thin Glass (UTG).

When a display folds, its outer layer experiences contraction stress, while the inner layer faces extension stress. This collective stress is called ‘folding stress’, and it can impact the overall structure of the display panel. A lower curvature results in higher stress, so displays folding inwards face higher stress than displays folding outwards. To minimize folding stress, Samsung has used special material for the display, the panel design, and the module assembly to act as a cushion when the screen is folded.

The new foldable OLED panel used in the Galaxy Z Fold 2 has the folding area that is 1.7x the folding area of the Galaxy Z Flip. According to Samsung, the new display can be folded up to 200,000 times, which means it can last for more than five years without any problem. It also received the ‘Eye Care Display’ certification from Switzerland-based testing firm SGS (Société Générale de Surveillance) as its blue-light emission is the lowest in the industry at just 6.5%.

Galaxy Z Fold 2 pre-orders reach record 80,000 units in South Korea

We had reported earlier this week that pre-orders for the Galaxy Z Fold 2 reached 50,000 units in South Korea. While it might not seem like a substantial number, it is surprising to see that many people wanting to drop $2,000 on a smartphone with a new form factor. Now, it is being reported that the second-generation Galaxy Fold’s pre-order numbers have reached a new record.

Samsung announced earlier today that it has received over 80,000 pre-orders for the Galaxy Z Fold 2. That’s an amazing achievement, especially considering that industry insiders were only hoping the South Korean firm to receive 60,000 pre-orders. Due to higher-than-expected pre-orders, Samsung has decided to postpone the official launch date of the foldable smartphone in its home market. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 was originally scheduled to launch on Friday, but it will now launch on Wednesday next week.

The company has also planned to extend the device activation period for customers who pre-ordered the foldable phone. The activation period was supposed to end tomorrow, but carriers will now provide services for the device until next Tuesday. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 costs KRW 2,398,000 in South Korea. In other countries, the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 will go ahead as planned.

Samsung said, “We want to thank people’s great interest and support for the Galaxy Z Fold 2. We will do our best to minimize inconvenience for customers who pre-ordered the device.

Samsung fits world’s largest-in-sports LED videoboard at SoFi Stadium

Samsung’s LED display technology is now beating at the heart of the SoFi Stadium, the latter of which has become the world’s first stadium to feature 4K end-to-end video production. Samsung has been recognized as the Official Mobile, TV and Display partner of the 300-acre Hollywood Park located in Los Angeles, USA, and the inclusive SoFi Stadium now features a 70,000 square-foot dual-sided center-hung videoboard that was built exclusively using Samsung’s outdoor LED solutions.

The SoFi Stadium state-of-the-art videoboard is the largest LED content playback system ever deployed. Its largest LED panel is about 40 feet tall, while the smallest panels have a height of approximately 20 feet. The entire videoboard comprises nearly 80 million pixels, but of course, pixel density is on an industrial scale.

According to Samsung, each one of the 80 million pixels are separated by an 8-millimeter gap from center to center. The videoboard frame also features over 260 individual speakers connected by more than seven miles of loudspeaker cable.

Samsung’s LED solutions spread across Hollywood Park

The videoboard adorning the SoFi Stadium is undoubtedly the more impressive piece of technology that was created following this newfound partnership with Samsung and its subsidiary Samsung Display.

However, the Korean tech giant’s LED display technology will also be used outside of SoFi Stadium and throughout the Hollywood Park’s different districts including the residential, office, and retail areas.

In addition, Samsung Members residing or visiting Hollywood Park will have access to a dedicated in-app section where they can take advantage of exclusive content, offers, and in-stadium discounts.

Galaxy Tab S5e and Tab Active Pro receive September security update

Samsung has released a new firmware update featuring the September 2020 security patch for two of its very different tablets: the Galaxy Tab Active Pro and the Galaxy Tab S5e. Specifically, the latest update is available for the LTE variant of the Galaxy Tab Active Pro and the Wi-Fi-only Galaxy Tab S5e. The updates carry firmware versions T545XXU2BTG3 and T720XXS1BTI3, respectively.

The Galaxy Tab Active Pro LTE is now getting the latest update in Australia and Mexico, whereas the Galaxy Tab S5e is being updated in Colombia, Chile, and Trinidad and Tobago. If you’re eligible for the update you should be able to download it by opening Settings on your tablet, navigating to Software update and tapping Download and install. As usual, you can bypass this procedure by downloading the firmware from our archive for the SM-T545 and SM-T720 tablets (click the link for each device) and installing it using a Windows PC.

The latest firmware update doesn’t seem to include any new features or additions aside from the September 2020 security patch, but the latter is supposed to address 15 vulnerabilities in Samsung’s software and over 90 vulnerabilities affecting Android OS. Both the Galaxy Tab Active Pro and the Galaxy Tab S5e were released in H2 2019 running Android 9, but out of the two, only the Galaxy Tab S5e might be lucky enough to receive three Android OS updates after Samsung changed its policy

Galaxy Z Fold 2 pre-orders in India outperform the original model 4-to-1

Samsung fans in India have had the option to pre-order the Galaxy Z Fold 2 since yesterday, September 14, and it looks like there are lot more people in India who are willing to adopt Samsung’s second-generation foldable device than they were in 2019. Samsung India has topped record pre-booking figures for the Galaxy Z Fold 2 within the first 24 hours on the market, and the company claims that demand for the second-gen model is four times higher compared to the original Galaxy Fold.

Samsung has put a lot of effort into making the Galaxy Z Fold 2 a success, not only from a technical perspective but also in regards to marketing. Customers who are willing to pre-order the Galaxy Z Fold 2 in India receive a 22% discount on Microsoft Office 365 Family Pack, 4 months of YouTube Premium for free, no-cost EMI, a one-time deductible price of INR 10,999 on Samsung Care+, and 24/7 access to Galaxy Z Premier Service.

People are warming up to foldables with the Galaxy Z Fold 2

Many people avoided the original Galaxy Fold for the simple fact that it was a first-generation device, but the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is Samsung’s third smartphone to boast a foldable display and it looks like the market is warming up to the concept.

Samsung appears to have a strong handle on the whole idea of foldable devices, and the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is proving that this emerging technology is here to stay. As a result, many foldable tech supporters who have been waiting for a Fold sequel are now joining the party, and this relatively high demand can be observed in India as well as other markets. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 had set new pre-order records in South Korea recently, and the Thom Browne Edition also exceeded expectations in various markets including Thailand, China, and South Korea.

In India, the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is available for pre-order for INR 149,999 ($2,036) but customers can drop the price by up to INR 76,340 ($1,036) with trade-in. The foldable is available with 256GB of storage in Mystic Bronze and Mystic Black. The device is in stock as of this writing but this could change at any moment.

Galaxy Watch 3 update promises longer battery life, better tracking

Yet another update to the Galaxy Watch 3 started rolling out to the global variants of Samsung’s latest and greatest wearable earlier this month. Identified by model number R8x5FXXU1BTH4, it would appear Samsung is deploying this over-the-air release in a pretty deliberate manner, so try to remain patient because this may take a while. The initial release wave has so far only been spotted in Vietnam and is ostensibly focused on the LTE-enabled versions of the 41mm (SM-R855F) and 45mm (SM-R845F) Galaxy Watch 3.

As for the contents of this OTA package, the changelog accompanying it promises everything from battery life and stability improvements to enhancements targeting specific features. The list of those includes the gadget’s sleep score system, heart rate monitoring, stress levels analytics, and VO2max/SPO2 measurements. In other words, some of the fundamental tracking services composing the Galaxy Watch 3 experience are being improved here.

Better measurements, longer battery life, and fewer sleep analysis bugs

The new software version should also address inconsistencies in how the Galaxy Watch 3 stores sleeping data. I.e. up until now, the device sometimes saved abnormal sleeping patterns in the Android version of Samsung Health as soon as it was connected to a smartphone, as per previous user complaints. While you wait for this update to reach you, you can always try deleting your latest sleeping data if score history appears stuck, i.e. refuses to update. That quick workaround is said to work quite reliably, though the actual issues with sleeping metrics haven’t been that widespread outside of the Far East.

As for the promise of longer battery life, it’s still unclear how significant of an improvement the new update brings, but it isn’t like the Galaxy Watch 3 has been lacking in this department so far, despite what the fact that the raw numbers hardly flatter its battery potential.

Samsung is selling its glass factory in Gumi as LCD production wanes

Samsung Corning Advanced Glass is closing up shop in Gumi, South Korea, but will maintain operations at its second factory in Asan, according to a recent report by The Elec. The factory located in Gumi is not shutting down per se but instead Samsung Corning Advanced Glass is reportedly selling the facility to an unnamed Chinese company for an undisclosed sum.

Samsung Corning Advanced Glass was established in 2012 and over the years, the two factories located in Gumi and Asan have been manufacturing glass panels for Samsung Display’s OLED and LCD solutions. But if you’ve followed Samsung Display over the past year, you’re aware that the company is stopping production of LCD panels by the end of 2020. Therefore, the Gumi factory’s closure is merely the result of Samsung Display’s decision to leave LCD production behind. There’s no need for LCD glass protection if no LCD panels are being manufactured; meanwhile the Asan factory will remain operational and focus solely on manufacturing glass for OLED displays.

This isn’t the first time Samsung Display sold part of its LCD business to a company from China. A couple of weeks ago reports emerged from South Korea to reveal that Samsung sold its LCD plant in Suzhou, China, to the display division of TCL, i.e., China Star Optoelectronics Technology. That deal is said to have earned Samsung around $1 billion according to industry insiders.

Newsflash: Galaxy Note series is more than just Galaxy S + S Pen

Even if we assume recent rumors about how Samsung is considering adding S Pen support to the Galaxy S21 series aren’t just correct but prophetic, do not be so quick to write off the Galaxy Note family. Because Samsung surely won’t be. This kind of speculation has been circulating the industry for years by now, and will continue to do so until the day another generation of Galaxy smartphones launches with S Pen support. Then and only then will the Galaxy Note line be in actual danger of discontinuation.

Yet even in that grim scenario, we’d rate its chances of near-term survival as decent on account of its built-in stylus slot. Which is a whole separate implementation issue independent of any digitizers. But we’re getting a bit ahead of ourselves.

The first dubious assumption on the subject people often make is that the Galaxy Note family will end the moment Samsung is able to replace it. And while its zenith may be behind us, predicting such a sudden demise of a product range that still sells millions upon millions of relatively expensive smartphones with ever-increasing profit margins year after year is… a pretty bold position to hold, to say the least.

Because while Samsung would be naive not to continuously experiment with the technological feasibility of replacing the Galaxy Note series, rushing it to its retirement would be an even more gullible decision. As such a move would be guaranteed to leave money on the table. And you don’t get to be a company the size of Samsung by leaving money on the table.

So long as Samsung doesn’t have a better candidate for moving millions of $1,000+ smartphones every third quarter of a given calendar year, the Galaxy Note brand will continue unobstructed. Alright, maybe not completely unobstructed – Samsung is bound to eventually attempt cannibalizing its sales in a controlled manner by adding S Pen support to other product ranges. Of course, given the constantly strengthening competition in this already oversaturated industry, whether such risk can even be “controlled” is another matter entirely. Yet it’s difficult to imagine all those years of rumors predicting the demise of the Galaxy Note range would amount to absolutely nothing.

The Galaxy Note brand isn’t irreplaceable, but not many people want it replaced, either

So yeah, while it’s not wrong to focus on the “how,” let’s not forget Samsung will also need a “why” before it seriously considers pulling the plug on the Galaxy Note brand. And looking at the near future, it’s more feasible to expect the Galaxy Z Fold range ends up being the one to replace Samsung’s cult lineup. After all, both a foldable display and a stylus dovetail nicely with the very concept of a portable productivity machine. The Galaxy S family, on the other hand? At this point, its whole schtick is that it’s not the Galaxy Note and is the first of Samsung’s series to receive the latest tech every year.

It’s hence difficult to imagine a future in which Samsung would want to combine its two biggest money makers among smartphones into a single range. Sure, the Galaxy Note 21 / Note 30 family still hasn’t been greenlit for a Q3 2021 launch but it’s likely just a matter of time before that happens.

What makes the Galaxy Note family first on Samsung’s flagship chopping block?

So, fans of the Galaxy Note series can probably rest easy for at least another year. After all, merging the lineup with the Galaxy S (or any other) range would be one thing, but outright retiring it without a direct replacement in both a functional and commercial sense seems like an extremely unlikely course of action for Samsung to take. That applies to the potential convergence of the Galaxy Note and Galaxy Z Fold series as well. This particular scenario has been the subject of countless speculation going back over half a decade, so any reasonable take on it belongs firmly in the “believe it when I see it” category. Yes, even though it makes way more sense than any hypothetical Galaxy S tie-up.

Let’s not forget Samsung continues to struggle with significant technological obstacles to merely adding a digitizer beneath a layer of Ultra Thin Glass (UTG), to say nothing of how challenging finding a way to actually holster an S Pen inside one of Samsung’s existing foldable smartphone designs would be. Could ditching the Galaxy Note series lead to great things? Is the number of flagship lineups Samsung’s currently juggling getting out of hand? “Yes” to both, but even though there are no guarantees that the Galaxy Note family has a long future ahead of it, actually killing it would presumably require some sort of motivation on Samsung’s part. And doing so in today’s circumstances would just leave the company with a giant hole in its Q3 device sales.

To expand on that last point: While Samsung may not see the Galaxy Note range as an irreplaceable part of its mobile future, its near-term flagship plans are at odds with the very concept of discontinuing it. Of course, there’s always a chance that the company simply releases one or more Galaxy S21-series devices with S Pen support, sells the stylus separately, and discontinues the Galaxy Note lineup without any other efforts to replace the experience of having it built into a smartphone. But given how much it talks up this niche every so often (i.e. every Galaxy Note launch event), not to once again mention how the Galaxy Note devices continue to sell in the millions year in, year out, this possibility will remain nothing more than a far-fetched hypothetical up until the point Samsung does something to prove it otherwise.

Best S Pen drawing apps for your new Galaxy Note 20 and Tab S7

The newly released Galaxy Tab S7 and Galaxy Note 20 series consist of some extremely capable digital drawing devices, especially given how the S Pen is just one aspect of their highly versatile feature set. Of course, in order to utilize a high-end digitizer and a long-lasting Bluetooth stylus, you still need apps, and this is where things can get a bit overwhelming as the Play Store and Galaxy Store are both filled to the brim with software of all sorts. A lot of what’s on offer is utter trash, however, because whatever review systems Google and Samsung have in place aren’t doing enough to stop low-quality submissions.

That’s why we’re here today – to provide you with a refined list of apps that will help you create everything from topical doodles to jaw-dropping digital masterpieces, whether you’re using the new Note 20 or Galaxy Tab S7 or an older S Pen-toting Galaxy smartphone or tablet.

PENUP: Best for beginners

Developed by Samsung itself, PENUP is an Android app devised to introduce you to the world of digital art. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned artist on the lookout for an online community that will help them grow their skillset, this tool will provide you with a variety of useful features conducive to creating digital art. From drawing tutorials and coloring exercises to sharing and rating pieces, PENUP is a great entry point into the world of mobile creativity. Best of all – it’s completely free to use.

Clip Studio Paint: Best for manga artists and basic anime work

If you have a particular interest in manga, then look no further than Clip Studio Paint, the newest app on this list that debuted alongside the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Tab S7 series as a timed exclusive for Samsung’s latest and greatest mobile devices. Meaning it’s available exclusively from the Galaxy Store for the time being. Its interface leaves something to be desired if you’re used to sleek mobile experiences, but that apparent flaw is also its biggest strength as it allows the app to complement the desktop version of Clip Studio Paint in real time. Alternatively, you can run it in DeX mode while retaining S Pen functionality – even if you already have a mouse and keyboard hooked up to your device. Speaking of drawing accessories, the app even ships with complete support for Wacom tablets.

Finally, Clip Studio Paint is also a capable animation tool that comes with a massive resource database of assets and advice to help elevate your anime skills, regardless of their current level. As a Galaxy device owner, you’re entitled to six months of completely free use, after which the base app will be available for a one-time fee, whereas the premium Clip Studio Paint EX service will set you back $8.99 per month.

ibis Paint X: Best for erratic workflows and doodling

As perhaps the most versatile app on this list, ibis Paint X casts a pretty wide net, catering to everyone from doodlers to seasoned digital artists. Its promotional materials appear to focus on manga artists, but the actual tools it offers are better-suited to a more generalized workflow and aren’t nearly as specialized as those of Clip Studio Paint. So, if you’re still finding your voice as an artist, this is a great mobile creation tool that won’t make you feel chained to any particular visual style, all the while allowing you to make complete use of your S Pen. If you end up liking the app so much that you end up exploring its functional limits, then you’ll be surprised by how much there is to discover, especially if you’re willing to pay $7.99 for the full-fledged ibis Paint experience.

Infinite Painter: Best Procreate impression you’ll ever see from an Android app

Infinite Painter makes a big deal out of being its own thing, but truth be told, “its thing” is more or less being an Android Procreate clone. But we mean that in the best possible way because as any artist who tried switching from iOS to Android can attest, there are multiple aspects in which Procreate is leagues ahead of the vast majority of apps you can find on the Play/Galaxy store. Its most notable advantage is sleek UI design and seamless timelapse creation, so if intuitiveness is your main concern, then this particular S Pen app is something you really shouldn’t miss out on. Its free version is pretty feature-packed as it is, but if you want to unlock the entirety of its features, you can do so for under $8, meaning Infinite Painter is even cheaper and more accessible than Procreate.

Krita: Best multipurpose drawing app for Galaxy Tab users

Krita is the only Galaxy app on this list that’s primarily aimed at tablet users. The open-source nature of the original software coupled with the MacGyver-like circumstances in which it ended up being ported to Android  mean you’ll need a pretty powerful device with a lot of screen real estate to really make the best use of it. Meaning this recommendation is only aimed at owners of the last few generations of the Galaxy Tab S series tablets. With that said, even this Early Access version of Krita is well worth a shot due to its powerful combination of image-editing and drawing capabilities, not to mention its legitimate claim to having the best-in-class brush engine. Especially if your art workflow tends to involve a lot of Photoshop-powered manipulation, in addition to traditional drawing.

Autodesk SketchBook: Best-ever value deal

Autodesk SketchBook is hands-down the best value for money you can possibly hope to find among all S Pen-ready drawing apps out there. “What money,” you may ask? Precisely: Free as of mid-2018 and with a decade-long track record to boot, this is an absolutely marvelous app that will turn your Galaxy device into a versatile portable machine for creating everything from highly stylized art pieces to perfectly accurate designs and everything in between.

If you’re ever ready to graduate from an S Pen and a mobile display to a more professional setup involving a desktop computer and a Wacom tablet, for example, you’ll be able to do so at no extra cost as well. It’s only once you want to leverage Autodesk SketchBook in a professional environment that you’ll be asked to pay a symbolic enterprise licensing fee amounting to about $7 per month ($85 a year) for multiple users.

Concepts – Sketch, Design, Illustrate: Best for vectorized workflows

Concepts is the ultimate Galaxy app for creating vector art that offers S Pen support and a wide array of functionalities meant to help optimize your creations for further processing beyond the scope of Android. Its free version is pretty powerful on its own and should have you covered for a good long while, whereas developer TopHatch also pioneered a pay-as-you-go business model that allows users to only invest in functionalities they care about. Alternatively, you can simply unlock all of the app’s existing and future features by subscribing to Concepts Everything for $4.99 per month. A pretty great deal if there ever was one, especially when you look at how limited most competing vector drawing apps on the Play Store and Galaxy Store truly are.

In conclusion, some may find it blasphemous that a list such as this one doesn’t include a single Adobe app and truthfully, we kind of expected to feature at least a couple of them when we set out to create these recommendations. Yet the highly fragmented nature of Adobe’s Android portfolio proved to be an insurmountable barrier for any single one of its tools to deserve a mention above our ultimate picks. Of course, we had to assume the majority of Galaxy device owners who’d be reading this list aren’t already paying for a Creative Cloud subscription. If you are, then by all means, give Adobe’s apps a try before investing in any other tool(s) with overlapping capabilities; just keep in mind that there are arguably superior solutions for any particular workflow waiting for you.

Codec pioneer DivX sues Samsung for quadruple patent infringement

Established codec developer DivX filed a lawsuit against Samsung that accuses the company of quadruple theft of patented video technologies. LG and Realtek Semiconductor are the defendants in the case as well, with the American company claiming both are guilty of near-identical transgressions. In its address to a Delaware district court, the plaintiff demanded a trial to determine the trio’s guilt, seeking to win damages with interest, among other relief avenues.

Three of the four supposedly infringed patents have been registered with the USPTO last year after passing individual reviews which lasted about 18 months on average. The remaining invention was originally submitted for review at the very end of 2011 before receiving regulatory approval in September of 2014. It describes a complex system for “multiphase adaptive bitrate streaming.” The remaining intellectual property is also related to various video encoding techniques, mostly aimed at establishing secure, fully encrypted connections.

Just another day in big tech… maybe

Samsung’s Q90R 4K QLED smart TV released in the first half of this year is mentioned as an example of an infringing product. DivX listed numerous instances of the alleged misappropriation on the conglomerate’s part, making no major distinction between Samsung and LG in terms of unlicensed video technology use. Realtek’s involvement in the case appears to be tied to its role of a major semiconductor supplier of LG’s.

Formerly known as DivXNetworks, San Diego, California-based DivX was established back in 2000 and is best-known for standardizing high-definition video compression through a trio of codecs: the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC DivX Plus, High Efficiency Video Coding DivX HEVC Ultra HD, and the original DivX based on the MPEG-4 Part 2 specification. Over the years, the company certified digital television sets, DVD players, and other media playback-capable electronics. Its brand is even somewhat familiar among consumers thanks to the major role it played in enabling the DVD era of home cinema.

While getting sued by everyone and their TV repairman comes with the territory when you’re among the largest and most successful suppliers of mass-consumer goods, if this litigation is just another case of patent trolling against Samsung, then it’s a pretty unconventional one. Because in this instance, the plaintiff isn’t a nobody. In fact, it extensively collaborated with all three defendants in the past, mostly in regards to HD TV development. Not to mention that its codecs are still widely in use and the company continues to operate under the new ownership of NYC-based industry giant Endeavor Streaming.

Samsung gains $10 billion in value as Huawei goes on life support

You know what they say: one multinational conglomerate’s curse is another one’s blessing. And boy, is Samsung getting blessed hard this week. Because as of today, Huawei is officially going on life support, i.e. its chip supply chain got chipped away. Meanwhile, as the Korea Stock Exchange wrapped up Tuesday trading moments ago, Samsung gained over $10 billion in value compared to its Friday close.

To be more specific, Samsung’s current market cap sits at 407.5 trillion won – the equivalent of $345 billion. Meaning the chaebol is on the verge of fully recovering from the coronavirus losses it incurred in March. South Korean industry watchers are interpreting this week’s surge in securities as a reflection of investor confidence in Samsung’s ability to capitalize on Huawei’s rapidly deteriorating situation.

Because either the gap between Huawei’s smartphones and the Galaxy brand widens, or China’s crippled juggernaut becomes one of Samsung’s largest chip clients. Either way, the view from Seoul is improving with every extra day Huawei’s chip supply chain remains cut off at its knees.

No such thing as stockpiling cutting-edge chips

Now, it’s worth remembering Huawei has been stockpiling chips for over a year in preparation for this day. But as Samsung can attest, sometimes not even the latest tech does the job, so expecting HiSilicon’s penultimate and third last to do so next year is… optimistic, to say the least.

Which just goes to show how big of a break Samsung caught this year, in spite of how hard it got hit by the still-ongoing pandemic, together with the rest of the world. Because with its biggest rival forcibly removed out of the picture, Samsung was gifted quite a bit of breathing room. And not just in terms of figuring out its chip designs, but also in regards to stabilizing operations in some key battlegrounds such as India.

Ouch: Galaxy smartphones drop seven spots in U.S. brand loyalty

Samsung certainly hasn’t been at the top of its smartphone game this year, and the world’s largest flagship market has been paying attention. More specifically, a newly published brand loyalty study suggests the Seoul-based tech giant lost a lot of consumer goodwill in the United States over the course of this year, dropping from third to tenth place in the grand scheme of things. Meanwhile, Apple, its largest rival in the country, went from eighth for fourth.

Meaning that right now, Domino’s Pizza and Home Depot have Samsung beat on the brand loyalty front. And whether this is more of a reflection of how merciless U.S. consumers are toward top brands or another reminder of Samsung’s 2020 struggles is beside the point; though it’s probably a combination of both. What the company will surely want to focus on instead is how to bounce back from this disappointing result as quickly as possible.

Samsung and Apple pretty much traded places compared to 2019

Not that it’s much of a consolation, but this year still hasn’t been as tough on Samsung’s brand as it was on the rest of the company’s operations. That is to say, everyone from Canadians to the majority of Asians is still pretty infatuated with the Galaxy brand as of this year, studies have shown. Samsung smartphones still being awesome is about the only thing Western Europeans and the Brexit crowd can currently agree on.

And even as its stateside consumer cred plummeted overall, Samsung did pretty well in the U.S. 5G segment so far. Well, it’s the only one that did anything, but you can only beat what’s in front of you. So, in other words, no, Samsung’s smartphone brand definitely hasn’t been free-falling globally like Brand Keys’ latest survey would have you believe.

And let it be remembered that SamMobile wasn’t lacking in hardcore Samsung loyalists even amid all the chaos of 2020. Here’s to hoping next year won’t test our loyalties as much – or perhaps you have some other wishes? Let us know in the comments!

Here’s a fashion statement: Galaxy Note 20, Z Flip turned into designer clothing

The Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Z Flip took their little turns on the catwalk as part of the latest edition of Samsung EGO, a biannual fashion show that the Korean giant has been supporting as a technology partner since 2013. The newest happening took place last week within the broader Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid (MBFWM), as is tradition. It started by shining a spotlight on this year’s winner of the Samsung EGO Innovation Project, Spanish architect and fashion designer, Paula Alegría.

Her showcase, titled “Architecture of the living and the non-living,” was a curious one, not least of all for its incorporation of several 2020 Galaxy flagships. And not just into the broader event coverage, but the actual designer clothing worn by professional models. You know, the people paid to look confident while walking in a relatively straight line across that runway thingy?

Anyway, here are some of the highlights from that opening act, see if you can spot every Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Z Flip that appears:

Even in all their telephotographic glory, these stills arguably don’t do the whole thing justice; keep scrolling if you want to see how Alegría’s attention-grabbing designer clothing look in motion.

Samsung is becoming quite invested in the world of fashion

While the most recent iteration of Samsung EGO marks the Galaxy Note 20’s debut on the catwalk, this is actually the second occasion on which the Galaxy Z Flip made fashion industry news. It originally did so with a surprise appearance at the New York Fashion Week earlier this year, immediately after Samsung’s Unpacked event in February. That particular cameo went to the Thom Browne Edition of Samsung’s second-ever foldable. Meanwhile, the one that made a foray into Spanish fashion the other day appears to have been either the regular model or the newly released Galaxy Z Flip 5G.

Samsung’s smartphone marketing stunts in the world of fashion go way back. At this point, the company has been indulging such voguish tendencies for the better part of the last decade. Its latest such move comes in the form of yet another Thom Brown collaboration centered on what happens to be its most expensive Android device to date. Of course, we’re talking about the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and its eye-watering price tag.
