New batch of Galaxy S8 case renders puts the camera flash back where it belongs

A lot of case makers have been coming out in the open with their renders for the Galaxy S8, and one has chosen to remain anonymous and tipped the folks over at GSM Arena off with yet another batch of renders of Samsung’s upcoming flagship. These images are apparently “based on accurate schematics”, but they don’t show us anything new or notably different.

Well, the flash and heart rate sensors are on the camera module’s left this time around, and there seems to be no headphone jack at the bottom, keeping alive the doubts on Samsung’s final decision about the traditional audio port. From what one of our own sources tells us, the location of the speakers – at opposite ends of the phone – is correct. Do they feature Harman audio? No one knows for sure.

But with the Galaxy S8 expected to be all-screen and (virtually) zero-bezel on the front, most of these concept images could be very close to the real deal. There is simply no way to confirm at this point in time, so keep taking these leaks with a pinch of salt. The latest renders are pasted below for your perusal.

This could be our first true look at the Galaxy S8′s design

Following a few case renders of the Galaxy S8 from various case makers, renders that seemed to be based on rumors, we could finally have the first believable Galaxy S8 cases listed online. Mobile Fun has listed the Olixar Ultra-Thin Samsung Galaxy S8 Edge Case for the device, and we believe the images of the case could be based on the actual Galaxy S8.

Samsung Group leader interrogated for over 22 hours in connection to a South Korean political scandal

Jay Y. Lee, the leader of Samsung Group, was named as a suspect in a South Korean political scandal including bribery and perjury. According to a new report, he was interrogated for over 22 hours. A spokesman for the investigation team said that the South Korean special prosecutor will decide whether to seek an arrest warrant for Jay Y. Lee. The decision could be announced on Sunday.

Prosecutors are now trying to determine whether Samsung leaders paid about 30 billion won ($25 million) to businesses and foundations backed by a confidante of the country’s President Park Geun-Hye. Choi Soon-sil’s political influence was allegedly used to force the national pension service – which owned a significant stake in Samsung C&T – to vote in favor of a merger of two of Samsung’s affiliate companies.

Samsung Electronics’ headquarter was raided two months ago in connection with the political scandal. Later, Jay Y. Lee denied his role in it. The company’s annual reshuffle was postponed due to the corruption investigation, and then the company’s leader was questioned two days ago.

Here’s a list of all the new features that Nougat brings to your Galaxy-branded smartphone

Following weeks of testing, Samsung finally started rolling out the long-awaited Nougat update for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge yesterday. Those fortunate enough to participate in the Beta Program were the first to receive the upgrade, but it’ll be making its way to other devices over the course of the next couple of weeks.

When it finally arrives on your handset, there’s a good chance (if you’ve never played around with Nougat before), you’re going to notice a lot of differences between Android 6.1.1 and Android 7.0. Fortunately, we’ve been working hard at detailing all the fresh features in our comprehensive What’s New With Nougat series.

Be sure to check everything out below:

Samsung was awarded the highest number of patents in the US last year

Sqoop, a startup based in Seattle that makes it easier for journalists to mine public records, has published a new report which suggests that Samsung and its subsidiaries were awarded the highest number of patents in the United States last year. The report follows one sent out by the IFI Claims Patent Services which suggested that it was IBM and not Samsung that received the most patents last year. This also meant that IBM remained on top of that list for the 24th year in a row.

Sqoop reports that Samsung was awarded 8,551 patents in the United States last year as opposed to IBM’s 8,062. Samsung was also found to have more pending applications, 10,695 against IBM’s 8,800 patent applications. The startup’s founder and CEO Bill Hankes mentioned in the report that their figures differ from IFI’s report because they also seek out patents awarded to subsidiaries and calculate them under one umbrella.

“A notable and symbolic result is that while longtime patent leader IBM applies for patents as a single company, Samsung applies under a large number of subsidiaries,” Hankes mentioned in the report, adding that “When these subsidiaries are combined however, Samsung has displaced IBM with the top ranking for the last two years running.”

This is what the Galaxy S8 might look like if these case leaks are true

We’ve seen a couple of renders of leaked Galaxy S8 cases this week that give us a glimpse of what the next flagship might look like. They are also contradictory in their approach as one suggests there will be a 3.5mm headphone jack and the other ditches it. It can be hard to imagine what the actual device might look like just by looking at the cases so this render that we’ve received from a loyal reader gives us an idea of what the Galaxy S8 might look like if these leaked cases are true.

Based on the Galaxy S7, this render features all of the design tweaks that we’ve tried to figure out from the leaked cases, including but not limited to the repositioned heart rate sensor and the thinner chin which bears Samsung’s logo. It goes without saying that it’s far from confirmed right now whether or not this is what Samsung’s next flagship smartphone is going to look like but the leaked cases we’ve seen so far want us to believe that this is what we’ll get for our money.

Love it or hate it? Let us know your thoughts about it in the comments below.
