Samsung releases fold test video to underscore Galaxy Fold’s durability

Galaxy S10 users in the US facing poor network strength on the device

A month after its release, problems on the Galaxy S10 have started to appear out of the woodwork. Last week, several reports popped up claiming that the Galaxy S10 fails to go into deep sleep, thus draining significant amount of battery juice. Now some new reports claim the devices are plagued with crippling signal strength issues.

Sprint appears to be the most affected carrier

The Samsung Community forum and Reddit is abuzz with complaints regarding signal strength issues on the Galaxy S10. The devices reportedly have reduced signal strength compared to other similar devices. Sprint, in particular, appears to the most affected carrier, though some AT&T and T-Mobile users are also reporting occasional reduced signal strength. Android Police did some tests and found that merely holding the phone “wrong” can affect the signal strength significantly.

Sprint has already acknowledged the issue, and said that it will be resolved with an upcoming software update. In fact, the carrier released an update for the Galaxy S10 series today. However, it’s not clear if it fixes the issue as the changelog doesn’t mention any such fix. Interestingly, a Sprint employee hinted about this update a few days ago saying if it doesn’t fix the connectivity issues, the only resolution will be to exchange the device.

Apparently, disabling Band 41 and 25 support temporarily fixes the issue on Sprint. The carrier, meanwhile, is suggesting users to do some basic troubleshooting, such as a Profile Update, a Power Cycle and a factory reset, before it will exchange the device or swap SIM cards.

Galaxy S10 lets you use Always On Display in landscape orientation

The Galaxy S10 comes with an option that lets users change the screen orientation for Always On Display (AOD). Samsung’s latest flagship was the first to come with One UI 1.1 out of the box, and compared to One UI 1.0 that we find on every device that was updated to Android Pie from Android 8.0 Oreo, One UI 1.1 comes with a couple of big new features such as Digital Wellbeing and Bixby Routines. Some minor changes and improvements to existing features are also included, like the ability to use Always On Display in landscape orientation.

On the Galaxy S10, along with devices like the Galaxy A30 and Galaxy A50 that run One UI 1.1, you can select the screen orientation for Always On Display from the feature’s settings. The option is a bit limited: You can only select between landscape and portrait and the system-wide screen orientation setting doesn’t apply to Always On Display. Also, you can’t tap on the Always On Display screen when it is active to change the orientation like you can change screen brightness; you always have to go into AOD settings to do that.

But just being able to select between portrait and landscape should come in handy for many users and in specific instances, like when you’re in bed with the phone lying next to you or the phone is being charged on a wireless charger in the horizontal position. So how do you change the screen orientation for Always On Display? It’s easy as pie (no pun intended) if you follow the steps laid out below.

How to change Always On Display screen orientation on the Galaxy S10

Step 1: Open the phone’s Settings app from the app drawer. Alternatively, swipe down from the top of the screen to access the notification shade and tap the gear icon on the top left to enter the phone’s settings.

Step 2: Here, tap Lock screen, then tap Always On Display to go into AOD settings.

Step 3: Scroll down a bit to find the Screen orientation option. Tap on it and then select Portrait or Landscape depending on which orientation you prefer.

Android Go-powered Galaxy A2 Core user manual surfaces

Samsung has been working on another Android Go smartphone which will most likely be out in the not too distant future. The Galaxy A2 Core has already been revealed in a leaked press render. The user manual for this device has now become available.

This will be the first Android Go smartphone in Samsung’s Galaxy A series. Samsung has already listed the device in the support section of its website. Earlier reports had suggested that it may be out before the end of this month.

Galaxy A2 Core user manual now available

The Galaxy J2 Core was Samsung’s first Android Go smartphone and it came out last year. It was designed to offer a lightweight Android experience with entry-level specs which include just 1GB of RAM. While some manufacturers might opt for the stock UI for their Android Go devices, Samsung did slap its custom interface on the Galaxy J2 Core. It will do that for the Galaxy A2 Core as well.

As we noted in our Galaxy J2 Core hands-on, the phone felt optimized for the specs that it has, while Android Go feels smooth. The Go versions of popular apps like YouTube and Assistant are well optimized for the entry-level device as well. You can thus expect a similar experience with the Galaxy A2 Core.

The user manual for the Galaxy A2 Core bearing model number SM-A260F is now available for download in English. It highlights the device layout and sheds light on the various features that it offers. What it doesn’t say is when the device will be released. The Galaxy J2 Core was priced at around $90 and that’s likely what this handset may cost as well.

Galaxy S10 pre-orders in Brazil exceed all expectations

The Galaxy S10 series is seeing a strong demand in Brazil. Samsung opened pre-orders for the series in the country on March 12, and within a fortnight the company has received twice as many pre-orders as it had received for the Galaxy S9 and S9+ last year. The Galaxy S10 pre-order period in Brazil runs until April 4.

“This result reinforces the confidence of Brazilian consumers in our brand,” said Antonio Quintas, Vice President, Mobile Division, Samsung Brazil. “Samsung has been in the country for 32 years always offering the best in products and services.”

Customers get Galaxy Buds and Galaxy Watch Active as gifts

Samsung is running a special promotional offer for the Galaxy S10 series in Brazil. During the pre-order period, customers who purchase the Galaxy S10e or the Galaxy S10 will get the new wireless Galaxy Buds at no additional cost. Those who opt for the Galaxy S10+ will get the Galaxy Watch Active. Buyers, however, will have to register their purchase on theSamsung For You website by April 7. They can redeem their gifts until May 1.

As for the price and availability, Samsung has launched only the 6GB+128GB variant of the Galaxy S10e and the Galaxy S10 in Brazil. The devices come in multiple color options and are priced at BRL 4,299 ($1,108) and BRL 4,999 ($1,289) respectively. The Galaxy S10+, meanwhile, is available in three different memory configurations: 6GB+128GB, 8GB+512GB and 12GB+1TB, with the latter two coming in ceramic back. The devices are priced at BRL 5,499 ($1,418), BRL 6,699 ($1,727) and BRL 8,999 ($2,321) respectively.

Someone got the Galaxy Fold early and they’ve shared a ton of details

Samsung fans still have a lot of questions about the Galaxy Fold. The company has carefully controlled the information flow for its first foldable smartphone. Despite unveiling the handset on February 20, it has not allowed members of the press to go hands-on with the device so far. That was also the case at MWC 2019 where the Galaxy Fold was proudly showcased in a glass boss but kept out of our hands.

With the Galaxy Fold launch just around the corner, some information is inevitably making its way to the public. Like that first Galaxy Fold video which seemingly surfaced from Vietnam and gave us a glimpse of the handset’s display crease. Now, a person who got the Galaxy Fold early has revealed some tidbits about the Galaxy Fold.

New Galaxy Fold details shed more light on the device

It’s reiterated that the device doesn’t actually fold completely flat. It’s more like a binder in that it leaves a tiny gap between the two display sides when closed. The open/close delay has apparently not been addressed so far. That’s the lag experienced when shifting apps from the external to the internal display. The example given says Chrome won’t re-render pages to fullscreen when switching sometimes. The webpage would first be rendered in the small area before its re-rendered to fullscreen after a few seconds.

As regards the display crease, it’s said to be noticeable but not too bad. It can be felt under the finger but becomes hard to notice when the screen is turned on and the brightness is over 70 percent. While the internal display can remain open at a right angle, the screen would be off. So it will not be possible to use the device in that state.

The external display is fully capable of doing everything that you would expect an Android smartphone to do. It can run games, though it would hardly make sense to play them on it. What’s more useful is having separate home screen setups for both displays which is allowed. Additional details include support for MST-based Samsung Pay, custom wallpapers and a separate 4G LTE variant as we exclusively revealed.

The person says that the general performance is comparable to the Exynos-powered Galaxy S10+. It merits mentioning here that the Galaxy Fold will use the Snapdragon 855 and not an Exynos chip as Samsung has already confirmed it has a 7nm processor. The production model of the Galaxy Fold runs One UI 1.2.

There’s a lot of interest in the storage speeds of this device given that the Galaxy Fold is Samsung’s first smartphone with UFS 3.0 storage. An AndroBench test result has revealed sequential read and write speeds of 1512MB/s and 418MB/s. That’s quite an improvement over the 950MB/s and 306MB/s speeds possible on the 12GB Galaxy S10+.

It won’t be long now before we can get our hands on the Galaxy Fold. Samsung will release the device on April 26 in the United States. The company will also start taking pre-orders for the device in Europe on that day, releasing it in 15 markets on May 3 for 2,000 euro.
