New Galaxy S9+ hands-on video circulating online is fake

It’s not uncommon for purported images and videos of an upcoming flagship handset to leak prior to the official launch. However, they’re not always accurate. While they do provide valuable hints about the upcoming device in some cases, some of them are just without any merit. That’s the case with this new Galaxy S9+ hands-on video which is circulating online today.

Fake Galaxy S9+ hands-on video

We’re all anxious to see the new flagship smartphone from Samsung. Countless renders have already leaked online but we have yet to see a proper hands-on video being leaked ahead of the official announcement.

The only that’s circulating today features a very convincing copy of the Galaxy S9+. It does appear to be the real deal at first glance as it imitates the Infinity Display and the design language very well. It even has a dual camera system at the back. However, you can spot subtle clues that give up the secret.

For example, the bottom bezel is clearly thicker than what you’d expect on the Galaxy S9+. Moreover, the power button is excessively chunky for no apparent reason.

Look closely when the app drawer is opened and you’ll see the FM radio app which you won’t find on the real deal. You can’t spot Galaxy Apps, S Planner and Samsung Health apps. Even the camera app that’s shown in this video is different.

There’s absolutely no doubt that this a fake albeit a very convincing one. It wouldn’t be surprising if this fake starts being sold in China weeks before the Galaxy S9’s official announcement that’s expected to take place at MWC 2018 in February.

Samsung will supply hardware for Verizon’s commercial 5G launch

Samsung has been selected by Verizon to help the United States’ largest mobile network to launch its commercial 5G network. The initial site for the fixed wireless access 5G service will be Sacremento, California, and we should see commercialization in the second half of 2018.

Samsung helping to pioneer 5G in the US

Last year, the two companies began deploying commercial 5G market trials in seven cities across the United States to get a feel for the tech’s capabilities. The trials proved fruitful, and Samsung has been deemed a reliable partner to help further the carrier’s 5G ambitions.

Samsung will provide Verizon with commercial 5G hardware such as home routers (CPEs), 5G Radio Access Units as well as 5G radio frequency planning services. With the use of this hardware, Verizon will be able to bring its fixed wireless access 5G network with fiber-like speeds to residents of Sacramento. It will also roll out the service in four other US cities by the end of this year.

The broadband service reached new heights during trials, literally; 5G service was able to reach the 19th floor of a building with a single 5G radio. It was unaffected by weather and achieved connectivity with or without a direct line of sight.

Samsung has been very involved in advancing commercial 5G. Its biggest R&D lab in India is also working on 5G technology. We can expect Samsung to continue playing a major role in the advancement of this next-generation standard.

Galaxy A8 (2018) and A8+ (2018) may be launched in India next week

Samsung enthusiasts abroad are closer to getting their hands on some new hardware. While the release date and price have been confirmed for some markets, others have been left foaming at the mouth to find out when they will be able to get their hands on the newly unveiled Galaxy A8 (2018) and A8+ (2018) from Samsung.

Galaxy A8 (2018) release date in India

A new report out of India claims that these premium mid-range devices may be released in India on January 10th. Samsung is yet to officially confirm the Galaxy A8 (2018) release date in India.

Samsung has yet to confirm a release date for these handsets in markets other than Vietnam and the conglomerate’s home country of South Korea. That being said, we should expect to see release date information popping up over the next few weeks as Samsung rolls out the device in other markets across the globe.

This is a heavily anticipated handset launch because we are starting to see flagship features without the flagship price tag. Both the Galaxy A8 (2018) and Galaxy A8+ (2018)  are equipped with Infinity Displays, a premium glass and metal sandwich, as well as dual selfie cameras with Live Focus capabilities.

With the latter being a first for Samsung, they are definitely making a point to celebrate it’s capabilities as seen in their latest short film. Lastly, we will also be seeing a new conveniently placed fingerprint reader.

Keep an eye out for further information regarding the release of these devices within your market.

Samsung created a SmartSuit to help improve training for Dutch short trackers

Samsung will continue its long association with the Olympics as the worldwide Olympic partner of the 2018 Winter Games that take place in PyeongChang, South Korea next month. Samsung Netherlands is sponsoring Sjinkie Knegt and Suzanne Schulting, two Dutch short track racers, and it has created a SmartSuit for them to help improve their training.

The Samsung SmartSuit was tailor-made for both short track racers and it features five integrated sensors. The suit was developed in collaboration with national coach Jeroen Otter and movement scientist Bjorn de Laat. The sensors transmit data via a wireless connection to the national coach’s Galaxy S8 who then adjusts the training regimen accordingly.

Samsung SmartSuit for short trackers

Short track speed skating is a form of ice speed skating. Multiple skaters skate on an oval ice track that’s 111.111 meters long in a rink that’s the size of an international ice hockey rink.

The skaters have to estimate how deep they need to get in the corners and on the straights to achieve optimum performance. Samsung’s SmartSuit relies on technology to provide accurate data down to the millimeter during the training sessions.

Since the suits were tailor-made, the system knows the upper and lower leg lengths of both Sjinkie Knegt and Suzanne Schulting. The app can thus calculate the exact body position immediately and let the coach how what the exact distance between the skater’s hips to the ice is in the bends and on the straights.

The coach can use the data to make adjustments accordingly. If the skaters are not bending enough, he can notify them at the touch of a button in the app which causes a vibration on the wrist.

“The Samsung SmartSuit makes you even more aware of how deep you are or not and you can immediately indicate whether you need to sit deeper. This keeps you alert and the improvement process will eventually go faster,” Schulting said.

The 2018 Winter Olympic Games will take place in Pyeongchang, South Korea starting February 9, 2018. Let’s see if Samsung’s high tech suit helps these Dutch competitors win big at the games. They won’t be able to use it during the actual games, obviously, but the training sessions with the SmartSuit should help improve their skills.

Samsung releases short film to celebrate diversity and the new Galaxy A8’s camera

Samsung unveiled its new Galaxy A series handsets two weeks ago. They’re not called the Galaxy A5 (2018) and the Galaxy A7 (2018) as initially expected. Samsung is calling the new handsets Galaxy A8 (2018) and Galaxy A8+ (2018). The new premium mid-range handsets from Samsung offer robust specifications at an affordable price point.

The company has released a new short film today in which it celebrates diversity. It’s also a subtle celebration, if you may, of the new handset’s camera.

Of diversity and camera features

One of the very first shots of this short film highlights the handsets’ dual front camera. The Galaxy A8 (2018) and Galaxy A8+ (2018) feature a 16-megapixel primary front camera with f/1.9 aperture coupled with an 8-megapixel secondary f/1.9 camera.

Users can switch between the two separate cameras to take regular photos or close-ups with background blue. The new handsets also have the Live Focus feature which lets users adjust the blur effect before and after the picture has been taken.

The main character in this digital film asks random people if she can take their photo. When they ask why, she says she’s taking pictures of things that she finds beautiful. This is where the diversity element kicks in all the while she is using a Galaxy A8 (2018) to take the photos, come rain or shine.

This is a bit different from the smartphone commercials that we normally see but it does get the job done, it highlights the camera functionality very well. Samsung will start selling the Galaxy A8 and Galaxy A8+ (2018) in many markets across the globe later this month.

Galaxy S9 screen protectors validate design similarities with the Galaxy S8

When rumors about the Galaxy S9 first started coming in last year it was claimed that the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ would have notably reduced bezels compared to their predecessors. That would have meant that Samsung would further improve the screen-to-body ratio and push the envelope on the look of a bezel-less display.

However, it was reported last month that the Galaxy S9 may not have slimmer front bezels because the improved design with reduced bezels failed to make the cut. Third-party accessory manufacturer Olixar has revealed its first Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ screen protectors today and they confirm that these handsets will have the same screen dimensions as the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. Even the front camera and sensor placement is said to be the same.

Galaxy S9 screen protectors

If these reports are accurate then the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will look almost identical to their predecessors from the front. They are said to feature the same 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch panels. A recent report has also claimed that the new handsets will also retain the 18.5:9 aspect ratio.

Olixar’s screen protectors for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are now available for pre-order exclusively from Mobile Fun. The product image in the listing also suggests that the new handsets will be identical to their predecessors.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing. The Galaxy S8 had one of the best designs of any smartphone released last year. I’m sure many Samsung fans will be pleased that the company is sticking to a winner.

Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ at the Mobile World Congress 2018 in February.
