Samsung receives seven awards at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity

Samsung’s first advertisement for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, which debuted during the handset’s unveiling event on March 29, won seven awards at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity: three gold, two silver and two bronze.

The commercial shows an ostrich wearing a Gear VR struggling to fly, and is said to reflect Samsung’s support for all of its clients around the globe who strive for the impossible. It’s a little strange, but the animation is fantastic.

Check it out:

For those in need of a refresher, the Galaxy S8 ships with a 5.8-inch Infinity Display, an Exynos 8895/Snapdragon 835 processor, 4GB of RAM, a 12MP rear-facing camera, an 8MP front-facing camera and a 3,000mAh non-removable battery.

Samsung Pay now supports Discover cards

A year later than expected, Samsung has armed its mobile payment platform — Samsung Pay — with support for Discover cards. This news comes shortly after the firm added compatibility for plastic issued by three more banks in the United Kingdom: First Direct, HSBC and M&S Bank.

What separates Samsung Pay from the competition is its ability to process both MST and NFC transactions, which means you can use the service to pay for goods in brick-and-mortar stores even if they aren’t equipped with the right hardware to accept contactless payments.

Samsung Pay is available on a whole host of devices, including the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 edge, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge, though support varies region by region. It’s also set to make its way to mid-range smartphones, like the Galaxy A3 (2016) and Galaxy J7 Pro.

Galaxy J7 (2017) to launch in the US as the Galaxy Halo

The Galaxy J7 (2017) will launch on Cricket Wireless in the United States as the Galaxy Halo, according to reliable tipster Evan Blass. There’s no word on whether the handset will sport any changes on the inside, but it looks like there are a number of cosmetic differences, including a redesigned camera configuration.

If the Galaxy Halo turns out to sport the same internals as the Galaxy J7 (2017), we’ll be looking at a 5.5-inch Full HD display, a 1.6GHz Exynos 7870 Octa CPU, a Mali-T830MP2 GPU 3GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable internal storage, a 13MP rear and front-facing camera, and a 3,600mAh non-removable Li-Ion battery.

It’s safe to assume that the Galaxy Halo will be available in four colors — black, blue, gold and pink — and will carry a price tag of approximately $380 when it hits the shelves later this year. Unfortunately, there’s no telling exactly when that will be, but we’re guessing some time before the end of July.

Samsung took the number-two spot in the wearable market for Q1 of 2017

Samsung was the second-largest global wearable vendor during the first quarter of this year with a total market share of 12.8 percent, reports The Korea Herald. However, that figure doesn’t seem half as impressive when you take into account that Apple topped the table with an eye-watering share of 53 percent.

As you’d expect, the Gear S3 classic and Gear S3 frontier made up the majority of Samsung’s sales during the January-March period, though several promotions, which include awarding a free Gear Fit 2 to every customer who picked up a Galaxy S7 after the Galaxy S8 hit the shelves, also contributed to the firm’s success.

The main reason customers have been picking up the Gear S3 frontier, and now the Gear S3 classic, instead of the Apple Watch is because they feature cellular capabilities — so users can leave their phone at home and still receive phone calls and text messages on their wrist.
