Samsung Black Friday deals to kick off early, include $200 off the Galaxy Note 9

Black Friday deals will be the talk of the town in the US next week, and Samsung is taking a head start by announcing the various discounts it will be offering to celebrate. The Korean giant will begin offering many of these deals almost a week before Black Friday, and everything from the Galaxy S9 to the Galaxy Watch will be sold at considerably lower prices than normal.

Samsung Black Friday deals going live almost a week early

Samsung’s biggest discount will be seen on its 2018 flagships. The Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+, and the Galaxy Note 9 will be available at $200 less than their regular price. Both the unlocked models and some carrier variants will be discounted. There’s also a $70 discount on the Galaxy Watch. Some of Samsung’s 4K smart TVs will also see heavily reduced price tags, including $300 off the 75-inch NU6900 TV. Looking for a new monitor for your gaming setup or an SSD to give your PC a speed boost? Samsung has you covered there as well, with up to $200 off on various monitors and SSDs (including the latest NVMe options like the 970 EVO).

A lot more Samsung products will be part of the company’s Black Friday deals, and you can see the full list at the Samsung US website. You might want to wait a few days to see what kind of discounts Amazon and other retailers will offer, though. Black Friday is still almost two weeks away, and it would be a bad idea to jump headlong into Samsung’s official deals just because you can access them a bit early.

Samsung to produce one million units of its foldable smartphone initially

Samsung didn’t unveil its foldable smartphone at SDC 2018 this week but it did show off its foldable display. The actual device was obscured in a black box which allowed the company to show off the display without revealing its design. Samsung said that it will be able to start mass producing the Infinity Flex foldable display in a matter of months.

This means that the foldable smartphone will not be available before next year. Samsung’s mobile division boss DJ Koh has said that the company will initially produce one million units of the device. It may decide to increase production if the market response is good. He has previously confirmed that the foldable device will be released globally.

Samsung foldable smartphone will be widely available

The initial production run of one million units will enable the company to measure the market’s pulse. If it feels that there’s enough demand it can then increase production. It’s difficult to say at this point in time how customers will react to this device.

The foldable smartphone does have the uniqueness factor going in its favor. It will be one of the very few devices on the market next year that you can fold in half. However, the price is going to be a major factor. If it’s too expensive then Samsung may not find a lot of takers for the device other than enthusiasts and its diehard fans.

Samsung hasn’t revealed any information about the foldable smartphone at this point in time. It didn’t say what the specs are, how much it weighs and how big is the battery. This information will only be revealed when Samsung is ready to unveil the foldable smartphone officially.

Koh also pointed out that Samsung met with Google CEO Sundar Pichai two months ago and they create a task force to work on the unique user interface for the foldable device. Samsung will now be working with developers so that they can create apps for the device which are available on launch day.

Koh didn’t say precisely when we can expect the foldable smartphone to arrive in 2019.

Samsung’s high-end flip phone without headphone jack now official

It’s official: Samsung finally has a smartphone that doesn’t come with a headphone jack. It’s a flip phone – the W2019 – that won’t come to markets outside China or South Korea, but this is the first solid indication that the headphone jack may disappear from the company’s mainstream flagships next year. After all, the Dual Aperture camera on the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 debuted on the W2018 last year, so it’s certainly something to be concerned about if you’ve been hanging on to Samsung smartphones because of the headphone jack.

Samsung W2019 specs are flagship-grade, as expected

But let’s talk about the W2019 here. As expected, underneath that classic flip phone design is a phone with flagship specs. The W2019 has a Snapdragon 845 powering its two Full HD Super AMOLED displays, along with 6GB of RAM and 128GB RAM on the base model (just like the Note 9; there’s also a 256GB model). The rear camera setup is also the same as the S9 and Note 9. There’s a primary 12-megapixel sensor that can switch between F1.5 and F2.4 aperture and a secondary 12MP telephoto sensor for Live Focus and 2x optical zoom shots. The front camera is an 8-megapixel sensor with F2.0 aperture.

The W2019 also gets a side-mounted fingerprint sensor and a dedicated Bixby key. There’s a 3,070 mAh battery that’s charged via a USB Type-C port, and it looks like there are Type-C earphones – or maybe wireless ones – that Samsung will offer along with the phone. However, it’s unclear if Samsung is offering a dongle in the box for when you would want to charge the phone and listen to music using wired audio gear. It runs Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box, and we’re guessing it will be eligible for the One UI and Android Pie update.

And yes, the W2019 has a traditional keypad and navigation keys when you open it up; the outer display has software navigation keys like recent Galaxy phones. The device will be sold in silver and gold. The W2019 price isn’t known, but you’re easily looking at a price tag that will rival what Samsung’s foldable phone is expected to cost.
