Galaxy A70 May update improves camera, fingerprint recognition

Samsung has released the first software update for the Galaxy A70 in India, three weeks after the device went on sale in the country. The update brings the May 2019 security patch and improves camera picture quality and fingerprint recognition. It also adds the ability to apply a beauty filter in real time when recording videos with the rear-facing camera.

The changelog also mentions that the update brings accidental touch protection. That feature has been present on our Galaxy A70 review unit since day one, so we’re not sure why Samsung is saying it has only been added now. For those wondering, accidental touch protection is the feature that prevents touches from being registered on the screen when the phone is in your pocket or a bag and comes standard on Samsung’s flagship and mid-range smartphones.

The Galaxy A70 update clocks in at 376 MB and is rolling out over the air in India. You can grab the update by opening the Settings app on the phone, select Software update, then tap the Download and install option. It’s unclear if a similar update is rolling out in other markets where the Galaxy A70 is available for purchase, and if it is available for you in a country other than India, do let us know by leaving a comment down below.

Our first look at the Galaxy Home Mini comes from the FCC

We were the first to reveal five months ago that Samsung is working on a smaller smart speaker. Whether or not it’s launched as the Galaxy Home Mini is another matter altogether. There’s mounting evidence that work on this device has been progressing nicely.

An image of the Galaxy Home Mini has been revealed by the device’s FCC listing. The fact that it has been through the FCC already suggests that its release may not be that far off. This leads us to ask the obvious question: Where’s the Galaxy Home?

FCC filing reveals a Galaxy Home Mini image

Yes, despite being unveiled in August last year, the Galaxy Home has still not been released. We exclusively reported two weeks ago that the Galaxy Home hasn’t been discontinued. That’s a good sign but Samsung has provided no clarity about its release.

Described as an “AI speaker” in the FCC filing spotted by CNET, the Galaxy Home Mini was tested on Wi-Fi b/g/n networks by the agency. The filing also mentions that it has Bluetooth version 4.2 which is a shame since most recent Samsung phones support Bluetooth 5.0.

The speaker will be smaller in size compared to the Galaxy Home and doesn’t appear to have a dedicated stand as well. There’s AKG branding on the top to signify that the audio has been tuned by the premium brand. Bixby will obviously be present onboard as it wouldn’t quite be a smart speaker without a digital assistant.

The Galaxy Home Mini did pick up its Bluetooth and Wi-Fi certifications three weeks ago. All signs are now pointing to an imminent launch of the device. One would expect Samsung to first release the Galaxy Home but the company’s plans in this regard remain a mystery. Will we see both speakers being released at the same time? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.

Exclusive Adobe Premiere Rush app for Samsung devices available now

Adobe today released the Premiere Rush video editing app for Android. The exclusive version that Samsung talked about at the Galaxy S10 launch is now available as well. Adobe initially launched this app for iOS late last year. It’s meant for those who want to edit videos on the go.

Starting today, users of select Samsung smartphones can download the Premiere Rush for Samsung app from the Galaxy Store. Samsung only mentions that this version is “fully optimized for Galaxy smartphones.”

Adobe Premiere Rush for Samsung is out now

Premiere Rush is quite a capable tool for video creation as it harnesses the power of Adobe’s professional grade Premiere Pro. Features include graphics creations, AI audio clean up, Motion Graphics templates, audio mixing and more. There are easy resizing options and fully customizable animated title templates so that users can create perfect videos for their social media. All videos and edits are saved to the cloud so they can work on their projects at any time on any device.

Samsung says that Premiere Rush for Samsung has a “full suite” of features optimized for its devices. The features include GPU optimization for improved editing performance. It claims that exporting videos on the Galaxy S10 is 70 percent faster than previous devices. HDR10+ and Samsung DeX support provide users with more workspace options. Galaxy users who subscribe to Premiere Rush will get unlimited video exports, 100GB of cloud storage, and a 20 percent discount for one year which takes the price down to $7.99 per month. There’s a free starter trial version which only allows export of up to three projects.

Adobe Premiere Rush for Samsung is now available for download from the Galaxy Store. You’ll need a Galaxy S10 or Galaxy S9 series device to use it or the Galaxy Note 9. Samsung says that the app will be supported on more Galaxy phones in the near future.

Samsung’s new 5x optical zoom camera is ready for its smartphones

We’ve already stressed the need for Samsung to up the ante in the camera department for its flagship smartphones. Its competitors are doing some very interesting things in this area. Samsung certainly doesn’t want to lag behind so it’s a good sign that it has been working on further improving its camera technologies.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics has announced that it’s now mass-producing a 5x optical zoom camera module. This means that the component is ready for use in smartphones. The question is, which Samsung phone will be the first to get it?

The new 5x optical zoom camera won’t protrude from the back

The announcement follows Samsung’s reported acquisition of Israeli camera technology company Corephotonics. It had designed 5x and 10x telephoto solutions for companies like Oppo previously. We have talked about how this acquisition will vitalize Samsung’s mobile cameras before.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics started developing camera modules in 2003. It made the world’s first dual camera module with image stabilization as well as the variable aperture module which debuted with the Galaxy S9. Its latest creation is actually thinner than a 6mm conventional 2x optical zoom lens.

The 5x module is just 5mm thick which means that it would be able to sit flush with the body of the smartphone. It would be a significant design improvement if the module were to not protrude from the back. This was done by arranging the sensor and lenses sideways and by utilizing the principle of reflecting light in a periscope. That’s the same principle that Corephotonics had used for its designs. It allows for a longer telephoto lens to be fit inside a slim device.

So, will we get to see it in the Galaxy Note 10? Samsung’s next flagship is rumored to have a vertical rear camera setup, not unlike the iPhone. It’s within the realm of possibility for the Galaxy Note 10 to get the 5x optical zoom module. However, there’s an interesting rumor out today from @UniverseIce, who claims that “the most creative Samsung smartphone” in the second half of this year won’t be the Galaxy Fold or the Galaxy Note 10. Without revealing any specifics, he says that “you just have to wait.”

Samsung has recently developed a habit of introducing new technologies with mid-range devices. The Galaxy S10 wasn’t its first device with a punch hole display, it was the Galaxy A8s which didn’t see a wide release. Or the fact that the Galaxy A9 (2018) was not just Samsung’s but the world’s first quad-camera smartphone. So the possibility remains that there might be an entirely new device in the second half of this year with this camera module. Like many of you, though, I’ll keep my fingers crossed for the Galaxy Note 10 as well.

Samsung to soon offer a new Cardinal Red color for the Galaxy S10

It was rumored before the Galaxy S10 was unveiled that Samsung might offer the device in a Cinnabar Red color. The render that rumor was based on was fake but it appears that Samsung did have a red color up its sleeve for the 2019 flagship.

New renders have appeared online today suggesting that Samsung will soon offer a new Cardinal Red color for the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+. These renders come from a source who has been right on many occasions in the past. Hence the reasonable certainty with which it can be said that a new color option is coming.

Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ to be available in Cardinal Red

Samsung often introduces new colors for its flagship smartphones several months after they hit the market. It’s an easy way of reigniting sales momentum for a handset that those who wanted to purchase have purchased already. Case in point: the Burgundy Red option which was offered for both the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S9 after they were released.

What’s unclear right now is when the Cardinal Red Galaxy S10 will go on sale. It’s also unclear if this new color option will be available in limited markets only. Samsung often limits certain colors to select markets and that may very well be the case here. We should hear more about the availability of the Cardinal Red color in the coming days.

What do you think about the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ in Cardinal Red? Would you want to pick one up? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section below.

Galaxy M20, Samsung’s best budget phone, is headed to Europe

Samsung unveiled the Galaxy M20 earlier this year. Our first assessment based on the hands-on time we had was that it was Samsung’s most competitive budget smartphone. The handset has done quite well in India and the other markets that it has been launched in ever since.

We had reported previously that Samsung may also bring its best budget phone to Europe. Galaxy M20 firmware for markets like Spain, Germany and Italy is already available from our database. A new report now reveals that this handset will be launched as the Galaxy M20 Power in Europe.

Galaxy M20 Power coming soon to Europe

While Samsung NL hasn’t officially announced the device as yet, the Galaxy M20 Power can already be reserved at Bol.com. It’s one of the biggest online electronics retailers in the Netherlands and Belgium. The device has a suggested retail price of 239 euro but the retailer is offering it for 209 euro.

Despite having a 6.3-inch LCD display, the Galaxy M20 is rather compact for its screen size. It even has a 13-megapixel primary sensor coupled with a 5-megapixel ultra-wide sensor that has a 120-degree field of view. Performance duties are handled by the Exynos 7904 with 3/4GB RAM and 32/64GB storage variants. The biggest selling point of this device is without a doubt its chunky 5,000mAh battery.

Samsung has priced the Galaxy M20 very aggressively in India. The 239 euro 4GB/64GB variant costs the equivalent of under 170 euro. Smartphone prices do tend to vary by market but the difference here does suggest it doesn’t need to get too aggressive owing to less competition in the budget segment.

The company is yet to confirm when the Galaxy M20 Power will be officially released. Samsung has relied on online sales across the globe to sell this device. That appears to be the strategy for Europe as well. Do check out our Galaxy M20 review to find out why we feel this device is a masterstroke from Samsung.
