Samsung may open up Samsung Pay to devices from other manufacturers

It has only been a few months since Samsung Pay was launched, the payment service is performing nicely in the market and a major update is set to arrive in the near future which will not only add support for more financial institutions but also allow users to use gift cards for payment. For now Samsung Pay works only with a select few Samsung Galaxy devices but the company hasn’t ruled out the possibility of opening up the payments service for devices made by other manufacturers.

This was revealed by Injong Rhee, executive vice president and head of enterprise business at Samsung’s mobile division, during an interview in which he revealed several other interesting bits of information about the company’s payment service. Rhee said that the idea behind Samsung Pay isn’t to replace your wallet, rather the idea is to make your wallet smaller by replacing credit cards, adding that Samsung Pay and wallets “complement” each other. He also said that the Magnetic Secure Transmission technology which the backbone of Samsung Pay will be brought over to non-flagship devices in the future. As of last month the payment service has over one million subscribers and transaction volumes have hit $88 million.

Rhee was asked if at some point the company will open up Samsung Pay to non-Samsung devices, he said that they have considered this but are not currently working with anyone because for now all of Samsung’s energies are focused on deployment. It’s interesting to see that Samsung is leaving the door open to this possibility, bringing Samsung Pay to devices from other manufacturers would certainly go a long way in cementing its position as a leader in mobile payments.

Samsung Galaxy S7 could be 10% cheaper than the Galaxy S6

A recent report from Weibo claims that Samsung is trying to reduce the next launch price of its flagship device by 10%. This could heavily encourage sales but it comes as a response to the ever evolving smartphone market. The company’s Vice Chairman Kwon Oh-Hyun discussed the stagnating smartphone business and the difficulties that Samsung needs to embrace in order to stay afloat. He mentioned that if Samsung chooses to resist this change then it will never survive as a business, and this is why it’s crucial that they adapt to these conditions. This isn’t confirmed yet and it’s based solely on market analysis as well as Kwon Oh-Hyun’s recent statements, but it seems plausible.

Samsung’s economical future seems a pretty positive one despite the market worries, with the South Korean giant reporting the first profit growth in two years. While some analysts predict that Samsung will exit the smartphone business in 5 years, those claims seem unlikely but the truth is that the market is in a constant state of change and Samsung needs to constantly adapt if it wants to survive.

Samsung BRITECELL trademark possibly confirms large camera sensor for the Galaxy S7

Over the past week or so there have been conflicting reports about the camera that Samsung is going to use for the Galaxy S7. Some believe it’s going to be a 20-megapixel ISOCELL camera while it was even rumored at one point that Samsung was in talks with Sony for the Xperia Z5′s camera. It was reported yesterday that perhaps the company will go with a 12-megapixel camera for the Galaxy S7 that has a large 1/2-inch sensor, the camera would have larger pixels and the ability to capture significantly more light and thus be able to take much better photos.

Samsung has not confirmed anything about the Galaxy S7 just yet but a new trademark application filed late last month has been discovered today, Samsung has trademarked BRITECELL, which might very well confirm the possibility that the Galaxy S7 does indeed have a camera with a large sensor. Even the description reads “image sensor for mobile phones.” It’s expected that Samsung will unveil the Galaxy S7 in January next year but we’ll certainly be hearing more about the device before the official announcement is made.

Samsung Electronics CEO says the company needs to adapt to the new environment to succeed

Kwon Oh-hyun, Samsung Electronics CEO and vice chairman, has said that the IT industry’s growth is hitting a plateau while on the other hand there’s increased competition from new companies that are flooding the market with new technology and products. Keeping that in perspective he says that Samsung Electronics needs to significantly change to not only steady its ship right now but also become the first mover in the years to come.

Instead of sticking to its successes in the past, Oh-hyun says that Samsung needs to adapt to the new environment to succeed in the future. “I believe now is the time for us to turn ourselves into a first mover from a fast follower,” he adds. Industry watchers believe the CEO’s recent comment show that the structural organization Samsung will undertake by the end of this year might be larger in scale than currently believed. Multiple reports have already come in about Samsung cutting thousands of jobs while it persuades workers in countries where it operates manufacturing plants to enter voluntary retirement. Samsung has also said that it’s going to further address shareholder concerns about payouts, a $9.9 billion share buyback program has already been announced, and the company says it’s going to further increase payouts in the coming years. All of this goes to show that the Samsung of the future may very well be leaner with improved relations among the company and its shareholders as it looks to clinch a first mover advantage in the technologies of the future.
