Carrier-locked Galaxy Z Flip gets September 2021 security update in the US

Samsung has released its latest security update to the carrier-locked version of the Galaxy Z Flip in the US. The update is currently rolling out on Sprint’s network, but it could soon expand to more carriers over the next few days. The unlocked variant of the phone hasn’t received the update yet.

The carrier-locked version of the Galaxy Z Flip is getting the new update with firmware version F700USQS4EUI1. It includes the September 2021 security patch that promises to fix more than 50 privacy and security-related vulnerabilities. The update might also have some device stability improvements, but don’t expect any new features or design changes.

Unlocked Galaxy Note 10 series in USA gets September security update

The Galaxy Note 10 series began receiving the September 2021 security update in the first week of September. It was among the first Galaxy smartphones to receive it, but the rollout was limited to South Korea. A couple of weeks later, Samsung is now ready to release the September update for the unlocked Galaxy Note 10 series in the USA.

Galaxy Note 10 users in the USA can identify the new update by firmware version N97xU1UES7FUH7. It appears to be a routine update with the September 2021 security patch included, but the firmware number indicates that the update doesn’t bring any significant changes or additions.

Fortunately for Galaxy Note 10 series owners, they will eventually enjoy an upgrade to Android 12, most likely next year. Until then, the series will continue to receive security updates regularly.

The September 2021 security patch itself was detailed a couple of weeks ago, and it addresses 23 Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposure items. As usual, you should be able to download the new update from the Settings app on your phone by accessing the Software update menu. Or you can download the latest update from our firmware database and install the Galaxy Note 10 update manually.

You can save up to 25% on the Galaxy Watch 4 series bundle in the USA

The Galaxy Watch 4 series is arguably the best so far, but if you’ve yet to purchase one of the brand-new models, waiting for a deal to come up, then wait no longer. Amazon is now selling the Galaxy Watch 4 series bundles in the USA at their lowest price yet.

The bundle includes the Galaxy Watch 4/4Classic and the Samsung Wireless Charger Pad Duo (2021 model), which works with Galaxy smartwatches and smartphones alike. Amazon is now offering a 20-25% discount on the Samsung product bundle, which means the price can be as low as $229.99. On the other hand,  the bundle can cost as much as $409.00 (down $79,99) if it includes the LTE 46mm Galaxy Watch 4 Classic.

The offer is available for a wide variety of color options, but since you won’t be buying the bundle from Samsung’s online store, you won’t have the option of choosing a different strap style before placing your order.

If you’re unconvinced about the Galaxy Watch 4 series, perhaps due to the transition from Tizen OS to Wear OS, you can check our hands-on videos and reviews linked below to learn more about how it’s like using these new wearables. In a few words, they’re fantastic, and the switch to Google’s smartwatch OS was seamless and beneficial for the most part.

September security patch is out now for the Galaxy Z Fold 2 internationally

Samsung is now rolling out another firmware update for the Galaxy Z Fold 2, and in the process, the company’s bringing the September 2021 security patch to the international model. The new firmware update is rolling out around the world, with Galaxy Z Fold 2 owners in dozens of countries now being able to download it OTA, or from our firmware database.

The firmware update is accompanied by a relatively standard changelog that mentions the usual potential stability improvements, bug fixes, and other enhanced features. For the Galaxy Z Fold 2 in Russia, the update also includes a handful of (bloatware) apps that are now required by the Russian Government.

The new firmware update weighs a little under 200MB

The update includes the September 2021 security patch, which was detailed by Samsung a couple of weeks ago. The September security patch actually began rolling out for the Galaxy Z Fold 2 in Europe, specifically Germany, earlier this month, but now it’s rolling out internationally.

The new update (F916BXXS2EUI) isn’t as feature-packed as the previous one, which already brought several features from the Galaxy Z Fold 3 to the Galaxy Z Fold 2. Nevertheless, improved security is nothing to sneeze at.

You can verify if the latest firmware is available for your smartphone model in your region via our firmware archive. If it is, you can either acquire it OTA update by tapping the notification once it arrives, or you can try triggering the update from the Settings app in the Software update section. As usual, you can download the new firmware from our database and install it manually on your Galaxy Z Fold 2 using a PC.

Your Samsung phone will soon have a Locked Folder for those spicy pics

Ever have that growing feeling of dread when someone’s scrolling through the photos on your phone? Perhaps you were showing them something and they took that as an invitation to keep scrolling. Next thing you know they’ve come across a picture of the spicy kind.

It’s a more common occurrence than you’d think. There should be a simpler way of keeping photos and videos on the device that you’d rather not want anybody else to see. That’s exactly what’s coming to a Samsung phone near you.

Google Photos can now do what Secure Folder has done all along

Google Photos is one of the many Google apps that come pre-installed on every Android phone. You’ll find it on your Samsung device as well. While most people tend to use Samsung’s own Gallery app, many rely on Google Photos due to the additional features that it provides.

Google announced in May this year that it’s bringing a Locked Folder feature to Google Photos. It does exactly what the name suggests. Users get a secure folder inside Google Photos that’s protected with a passcode or biometrics like a fingerprint.

So even if someone has taken the liberty of scrolling through all of your photos and videos, they won’t see what’s inside the Locked Folder. The media that’s locked in this folder won’t show up even when you scroll through other apps on the phone. Nothing that’s stored in the Locked Folder is backed up to the cloud.

The company had previously made this feature exclusive to its Pixel phones only. It has now been confirmed that the Google Photos Locked Folder will be rolling out to other Android devices soon. Expect it to become available on your Samsung phone in the near future.

There’s an even simpler way. You could just move them to Samsung’s very own Secure Folder. It’s a locked enclave on your device that’s completely shut off from the system. Any media stored in Secure Folder also doesn’t show up when scrolling through other apps.

Samsung flagships suffering from stuttery slow-motion recording?

Throughout 2021, several complaints from Galaxy flagship owners popped up on the Samsung Community website, and they all detailed similar issues. Whether it was the Galaxy S20/Galaxy S21 or Galaxy Note 20 series, a few users have highlighted some unpleasant slow-motion recording issues that seemingly affect Samsung’s flagships — or at least, a limited number of them.

Although the issue never seemed to be too widespread, it persists, at least according to some users. If you count among them, feel free to leave a comment below and share more details about the Galaxy device you’re using and the difficulties you’re experiencing while recording slow-motion videos.

We tested this camera feature on the Galaxy S21 Ultra running One UI 4.0 and the Galaxy S21+ running One UI 3.1. Slow-motion recording seems to be working as intended on both models and operating systems, and we were unable to reproduce the issue. That’s not to say it doesn’t exist — it’s just that we have yet to encounter it. Nevertheless, affected users have shared videos before, and you can check the one embedded below if you want to see exactly how this slow-motion problem manifests.

If you are experiencing choppy framerate or other visual artifacts while recording in slow motion, let us know what Galaxy phone and firmware version you’re using, and perhaps we can all help Samsung find the root of the problem. It’s still unclear if it affects only Exynos/Qualcomm variants of both, but reports seem to be leaning more towards the former chipset.

Samsung launches new frames for The Frame TV via dedicated website

Samsung UK has launched a new website dedicated to customers of The Frame, i.e., the company’s QLED 4K TV that doubles as a digital painting. The Frame can blend in with its environment by displaying thousands of artworks available from the Art Store, but through the new website, Samsung UK is giving customers another way to customize their Frames.

Quite literally, The Frame customers in the UK can now buy new frame models the smart TV with the same name from the new theframebezel.com website. Through it, customers can order standard frames or one of the ten brand-new Premium or Deluxe color options. And of course, the idea here is that frames are available for purchase separately at any time.

The Premium frames are available in Space Grey, Forest Brown, Rich Brown, Teal Jewel, and Wishful Pink. In addition, the Deluxe color options include Vision Blue, Italian Vine, Sahara Sand, Cirque Gold, and Ruby Red.

Premium frames are available for the starting price of £129, while Deluxe frames cost £149 and up. Prices vary depending on the size of The Frame, and the new frame options are available in five sizes ranging from 32-inch to 65-inch.

The new service for The Frame customers is presently available in the UK and was developed in collaboration with Frame Your TV. The latter company is selling a New York Black Orange TV Frame of its own, though, for a much more exquisite price of £430 and up.

Galaxy Watch 4’s Wear OS advantage became clear to me just ten minutes in

A lot has been said about Samsung and Google’s partnership that saw the two companies work together on the new ‘unified’ Wear OS (3) platform. Many Samsung fans are angry the Korean giant switched out what they think was a superior OS, and Galaxy Watch 3 owners are disappointed that their barely-a-year-old watch will remain on Tizen instead of being upgraded to Wear OS.

Owners of other Android smartwatches are fuming, too: Google’s keeping Wear OS 3 exclusive to Samsung until 2022, and even when Wear OS 3 is eventually released for existing watches, not all of them are guaranteed to get the update.

For most customers, though, Samsung’s switch to Android/Wear OS for its smartwatches is a good move. The biggest advantage is the app support that Wear OS enjoys, and I was reminded of that advantage just ten minutes or so after I started using my newly purchased Galaxy Watch 4.

Google apps are finally officially available on Samsung watches

I picked up the 44 mm Galaxy Watch 4 at a retail store earlier today. I set it up at the store itself, and then I walked out to the parking lot to get my car, turned on navigation on my phone, and drove out. A few minutes later I felt the watch vibrate, glanced at it, and saw directions on the screen because it detected I was running Google Maps on my phone. And all Maps functionality is available right from the watch itself, not just directions.

Yes, at long last, we have access to official Google apps on a Samsung smartwatch (Google Assistant has yet to arrive, sadly). That alone is reason enough for me to support the company’s decision to ditch Tizen. App support makes or breaks any mobile operating system these days, and there’s no denying the fact that Samsung sticking to its in-house OS was a huge obstacle to app availability on its smartwatches.

That obstacle has now been removed, and with Samsung putting its custom One UI interface over Wear OS 3, we’re now able to enjoy the best of both worlds. Sure, there are some downsides, reduced battery life being one of the major ones, but I think the improved app support was well worth the compromise.

What do you think? Do you like your Galaxy Watch 4 or Watch 4 Classic, or do you think Samsung should have stuck with Tizen?

Your Samsung charger could soon charge your friend’s iPhone… charger sold separately

The European Commission announced that it’s taking an important step against e-waste and consumer inconvenience. The European Union’s executive branch wants to standardize charging ports and harmonize fast charging technologies across all brands.

The revised Radio Equipment Directive published by the European Commission proposes USB-C to be the common port for all devices, to allow customers to charge their devices using the same USB-C charger, regardless of brand.

Of course, Samsung and other Android smartphone manufacturers already use a standard USB-C port, but Apple doesn’t, which means that the European Union might soon make it possible for iPhone users to charge their phones using a Samsung charger.

The European Commission is also looking to harmonize fast-charging technology, thus preventing device manufacturers from limiting charging speeds if off-brand chargers are used.

No more USB-C chargers bundled with consumer electronics

Whether you’re for or against this practice, bundling a smartphone or a tablet with a USB wall charger is becoming a thing of the past. And it’s not just because Apple did it first.

The European Commission is now supporting unbundling the sale of chargers with electronic devices, as this could help consumers save €250 million a year (combined). Many consumers already own a wall charger, so by removing this item from retail boxes, the European Commission is hoping to reduce unnecessary e-waste.

In addition, the EU wants to keep customers well informed and is proposing methods for manufacturers to be more open regarding charging and fast charging specifications when selling their products.

Samsung already removed the wall charger from the retail box of its latest flagship phones starting with the Galaxy S21 series, but the company might soon have to remove chargers from lower-cost phones too.

If the proposal is adopted by the European Parliament, industry players will have 2 years to adapt to these changes and comply with the new regulations.

Galaxy F42 5G landing page at Flipkart confirms specs, design, launch

After Flipkart teased the launch of the Galaxy F42 5G earlier this week in an obscure banner, the online retailer went ahead and officially announced the smartphone online. A landing page for the upcoming device is now live at Flipkart, and it confirms the overall design and most important features.

The Galaxy F42 5G is a “Full-on Legend.” This is the buzzphrase Flipkart is using to promote the device, and the promotional page is sprinkled with the words “legend” and “legendary.”

Galaxy F42 5G confirmed specifications

Flipkart confirms that the Galaxy F42 5G is equipped with an FHD+ display capable of a 90Hz refresh rate, a triple-camera set up featuring a 64MP primary camera capable of night mode, and a 5,000mAh battery.

The smartphone also benefits from rich 5G support in India, as it’s compatible with up to 12 bands for uninterrupted nationwide 5G access.

Samsung and Flipkart gave the Galaxy F42 5G a slightly more unique camera housing design, but on the other hand, the screen has an Infinity-V notch, which is quite common for low-cost Galaxy phones.

Flipkart hasn’t revealed any pricing details for the Galaxy F42 5G, but it will launch the phone on September 29, so stay tuned.

Samsung is manufacturing Tesla’s next-gen HW4.0 self-driving chip for 2022

Not many Tesla owners might know this, but the renowned autonomous driving system is in part made possible by Samsung. Tesla’s first-generation self-driving chip was manufactured by Samsung, and this collaboration continues to this day. In recent news, Samsung won another contract to manufacture Tesla’s next-gen HW4.0 self-driving chip, which is expected to be installed in Tesla electric vehicles starting Q2 2022.

Previous reports indicated that Tesla could end up choosing TSMC over Samsung, but the EV carmaker reportedly decided to ink the deal with Samsung thanks to its chip design capabilities, competitive pricing, and process technology.

The HW4.0 self-driving chip is crucial for Tesla

The next-gen HW4.0 chip is rumored to be the next stepping stone leading towards Tesla’s perfect vision of a self-driving EV. And because it’s such an important piece of the puzzle, Samsung reportedly seemed like a safer bet for Tesla.

Samsung is to manufacture Tesla’s next-gen HW4.0 self-driving chip at its facility in Hwaseong using a 7nm process. In theory, the company could’ve used its latest 5nm process instead of 7nm, but the latter is proven to deliver an improved yield ratio. Tesla is also aware of reliability, and using a 7nm process is reportedly a safer bet, both technically and economically.

In other recent news, Samsung and Tesla have signed a half a billion dollars contract for camera systems for the Cybertruck, and Samsung recently completed prototyping Tesla’s 4680 battery cells.

Comcast’s Galaxy A50 picks up September 2021 security update in the US

The frequency of security updates from Samsung seemed to have gone down a bit after the company released the first Android 12-based One UI 4.0 beta for its flagship Galaxy S21 lineup, but things seem to be picking back up again.

Samsung’s released the September 2021 security update for a couple of devices this week. The Galaxy A50 was one of those devices and got the update on the international model first, and the carrier-locked variants in the USA are already catching up.

Comcast has released a new update that bundles the September 2021 security patch for the Galaxy A50. The update sports firmware version A505USQSFDUI1 and packs no changes or improvements other than the latest security fixes.

And that’s pretty much going to be the Galaxy A50’s fate going forward as far as software updates are concerned. The device has already received two major Android and One UI upgrades and isn’t eligible for Android 12. Yes, it’s unfortunate, but only flagship phones from 2019 are included in Samsung’s promise of three generations of OS updates.

As usual, you can download the new update that’s rolling out now from the phone’s Settings » Software update menu. Our firmware archive has the latest firmware ready to go if you would prefer updating your phone using a Windows PC (just make sure to backup all important data beforehand).
