Samsung essentially confirms 1TB Galaxy S10+ with new memory chip

Remember all those rumors about the 1TB Galaxy S10+? Samsung has essentially confirmed the handset today. It announced the industry’s first 1TB embedded Universal Flash Store chip for smartphones. What that means in simple words is that it can now offer 1TB of internal storage on smartphones.

The rumors have claimed that at least one variant of the Galaxy S10+ will have 1TB of internal storage. It may also be coupled with 12GB of RAM but that remains debatable for now. The announcement of this new memory chip now is a strong indication that it may debut with the Galaxy S10+.

1TB Galaxy S10+ will feature Samsung’s new eUFS solution

Samsung’s 1TB eUFS 2.1 chip comes just four years after the company launched its first 128GB eUFS solution. The company says that this new chip will provide smartphone owners with a “storage capacity comparable to a premium notebook PC.”

“Samsung is committed to assuring the most reliable supply chain and adequate production quantities to support the timely launches of upcoming flagship smartphones in accelerating growth of the global mobile market,” said Cheol Choi, EVP of Memory Sales & Marketing at Samsung, hinting that this chip will indeed be present on a Galaxy S10+ model.

The 1TB eUFS chip has the same package size as the 512GB version launched in 2017. It combines 16 stacked layers of Samsung’s 512-gigabit V-NAND flash memory with a new proprietary controller. This will enable phone users to store 260 10-minute 4K UHD videos. The chip promises speeds of up to 1,000 MB/s which is almost twice the sequential read speed of a conventional 2.5-inch SATA SSD.

The random read speed has been increased by 38 percent to 58,000 IOPS compared to the 512GB eUFS. Random writes are now 500 times faster than a normal microSD card at 50,000 IOPs. These high random speeds will allow for high-speed continuous shooting at 960 frames-per-second and allow users to take full advantage of their devices’ multi-camera capabilities.

Samsung’s memory division will obviously sell this chip to other companies as well so expect more 1TB smartphones this year. It seems like a done deal now that the Galaxy S10+ will be the first for the year.

Galaxy Note 9 Pie release for Nordic countries bring newer software build

Samsung has released the Android Pie update for the Galaxy Note 9 in Nordic countries today. The software version for the update for Nordic countries is N960FXXU2CSA7, which is a newer build than the one that rolled out to other countries when the Note 9’s stable Pie update was first released. It’s unclear if it brings anything new other than the software version, though.

The update for the Nordic region comes with the January 2019 security patch and is a 1.6GB download over the air. If you own a Note 9 in any of the Nordic countries, you should be able to grab the update immediately by tapping the Download updates manually option in the Software update menu of the phone’s Settings app. It’s not available over Samsung Smart Switch or in our firmware section just yet, but we can expect to see that change in a day or so.

Once you’ve updated to Pie, do read up on all the new features that it brings to the Galaxy Note 9 in addition to the visual upgrades offered by Samsung’s beautiful One UI. If you’re in a different country, you can keep an eye out on our constantly updated list of countries where the Note 9 Pie update has been released.

Galaxy View 2 specs possibly revealed in a benchmark

It was first reported that Samsung might be developing a successor to the Galaxy View. Now, some Galaxy View 2 specs have surfaced online through a benchmark listing. For those who forgot, the Galaxy View was a massive Android tablet that Samsung launched three years ago.

Initial reports about the successor suggested that it will have a 17.5-inch display. Some of you might remember that the original had an 18.4-inch display. The device also had an integrated book-like hinge that acts as a stand.

Galaxy View 2 specs show it will be a mid-range device

The Galaxy View didn’t really do that well and Samsung never released a successor. It might be willing to give it another go or perhaps a carrier partner has convinced Samsung to launch a new one. We hear that the Galaxy View 2 will be headed to AT&T in the United States when it arrives. Whether or not an unlocked version is released in other markets across the globe remains to be seen.

According to this benchmark listing, the Galaxy View 2 specs include an Exynos 7885 processor with 3GB of RAM. If that doesn’t seem impressive, remember that the Galaxy View didn’t have specs to write home about either. The listing mentions Android 8.1 Oreo but there’s a possibility that the device could ship with Android 9 Pie.

What’s unclear is when this device, bearing model number SM-T927A, is going to be launched. AT&T and Samsung have kept mum on the matter so far. The device did receive its Wi-Fi and Bluetooth certifications about five months ago and there hasn’t been much talk about it since then. We’ll be sure to let you know if and when more information arrives about this device.

First Galaxy A10 specifications surface in benchmark

One of the few remaining devices in Samsung’s Galaxy A-series for 2019 that had none of its specs leaked is the Galaxy A10. That is, until now, as this phone with model code SM-A105F has now been spotted in a benchmark.

Galaxy A10 specs in Geekbench

Since the naming scheme of Samsung’s next-generation A-series became clear through a series of trademark applications, we have essentially been playing a game of bingo. Several of the new devices already had some – or most – of their technical details leaked, such as the upcoming Galaxy A20, A30, A40, A50, A70, and even the Galaxy A90.

Missing was the Galaxy A10 a.k.a. the Samsung SM-A105F, but Geekbench just demystified even that phone. To be precise, we see a device running Android 9. Samsung’s own Exynos 7885 is present, running a surprisingly low clock speed, hinting at the possible use of the recently launched Exynos 7904.

The clearest indication that the Galaxy A10 will be the cheapest device in the new series, is the presence of only 2GB RAM. In 2019, this is very minimal, and it would only be properly explained by a very friendly price tag. After all, even the freshly unveiled Galaxy M10 packs 3GB (do not forget to check out our hands-on with the M10, by the way).

Launch

We do not know when Samsung will launch the Galaxy A10. The presence of Android 9 out of the box suggests we will have to wait until after the Galaxy S10 launch on February 20. In short: we are likely to see the A10 and its bigger and bolder siblings sometime in the coming spring. Though we previously could confirm some of the new A-series phones will make it to Asian and European markets, we do not at this moment have such information for the Galaxy A10. Only patience, as usual, will bring us more information.

Galaxy Buds get FCC clearance, launch possible on February 20

Galaxy Buds, the successor to Samsung’s Gear IconX (2018) earbuds, is inching closer to an official launch. The upcoming wearable was recently certified by Bluetooth SIG. The hardware has now received its certification from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States.

Samsung is expected to announce the wireless earbuds at the Galaxy Unpacked event on February 20. That’s where the company will be launching the Galaxy S10 and possibly the foldable smartphone as well.

Galaxy Buds get FCC certification

The FCC has just certified a ‘Samsung Bluetooth Headset’ bearing the model number SM-R170. It is the same device that was certified by Bluetooth SIG last week. The device has complied with the necessary standards, suggests the FCC documentation. Furthermore, the certification also reveals that the earphones will be manufactured in Vietnam, where Samsung makes many of its products.

The Galaxy Buds will be available in black, white, and yellow, and will come with Bluetooth 5.0 support. The earbuds will also have 8GB of internal storage space. This is more than on any previous Samsung wearable, be it previous IconX models or one of the many Samsung smartwatches.

Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy Buds alongside the Galaxy S10 on February 20 in San Francisco, California. The company also has a number of other wearable devices in work, including the Galaxy Fit, which received its Bluetooth certification last week. It now remains to be seen how many of them make their way out at the Galaxy Unpacked event next month.

Galaxy M10 hands-on: Infinity-V display, ultra-wide camera for cheap

With the Galaxy M10 and Galaxy M20, Samsung is hoping to get back into the running in the budget smartphone market. The Galaxy M10 is the cheaper device of the two, but it gets two of the highlight features of the M series lineup: An Infinity-V display with a waterdrop notch and a dual rear camera with an ultra-wide sensor. I’ve already talked about the Galaxy M20 and our initial impressions of the phone, and today, we take a look at its lower-priced cousin.

Samsung Galaxy M10 hands-on

The Galaxy M10 may be cheaper than the Galaxy M20, but its design and construction are pretty much the same as far as look and feel are concerned, with the key difference being the lack of a fingerprint sensor and the presence of a speaker grill at the back of the M10. The notched display is nearly the same size as the M20’s as well (the M10 is 6.2 inches, the M20 6.3 inches). But the M10 is noticeably lighter, as it gets a 3,400 mAh battery instead of the M20’s 5,000 mAh battery. It’s made entirely of plastic, but it doesn’t feel cheap to the touch when you first pick it up.

The best thing about the M10 is that its dual rear camera setup is identical to the M20’s, so you get a regular 13MP snapper and a secondary 5MP lens that can take 120-degree ultra-wide shots. I can’t comment on the imaging performance just yet, but as I said in our M20 hands-on, just the presence of an ultra-wide camera makes the Galaxy M10 unique among everything that’s on the market.

And while the M10 gets lower basic specs in other departments, it’s hard to notice them at first glance. The display has HD+ resolution instead of Full HD+, but you won’t find the screen to be too pixelated – it’s the larger fonts that give away the lower pixel density. Even an ambient light sensor is part of the package. Performance seems fine as well. The M10 gets Samsung’s old Exynos 7870 SoC, which has never been a great performer, but that’s where the lower screen resolution should help in the long run.

Is there anything else that’s exciting on the Galaxy M10? Well, just the price tag. The M10 is priced at ₹8,990 (roughly $130) for the variant with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage. Its specs match those of the Galaxy J6, which came out in May last year for ₹13,990 (roughly $190), while offering a bigger display and an ultra-wide camera. Sure, the M10 is only going to be available online, but that doesn’t make it any less impressive that Samsung is offering the M10 for such an attractive price.

As always, whether the Galaxy M10 is a device worth purchasing is something you’ll find out in our full review. With the Galaxy M20’s base variant priced just ₹2,000 higher than the 3GB+32GB M10, I can see the M10 being bought by those who have a very limited budget on their hands. But, again, look out for our full review for a proper verdict on the device.

That 12GB Galaxy S10+ with 1TB storage rumor isn’t dying down

The rumors about a 12GB Galaxy S10+ variant with 1TB of internal storage aren’t dying down. It’s believed that this configuration will be part of a limited premium version of the Galaxy S10+ that has the ceramic back. We exclusively reported a couple of months ago that Samsung will sell a model of the Galaxy S10 with a ceramic back.

However, there’s no such concrete information available about this memory and storage configuration. Its origins are interesting too, given that this possibility was first highlighted in a general analyst report.

12GB Galaxy S10+ with 1TB storage might be quite expensive

The analyst report in question made predictions about smartphone RAM options for the future. It wasn’t a leak about the 12GB Galaxy S10+ but it was perceived as such by some outlets. Soon the Weibo/Twitter leaker crowed jumped into the fray. They also claimed that there will be a Galaxy S10+ model with these figures.

An anonymous tipster apparently got information from a Samsung representative who had working Galaxy S10 prototypes. They tell GSMArena that a premium version of the Galaxy S10+ will have 12GB RAM and 1TB of internal storage. This version will be sold in limited quantities. All of the reports make this version out to be separate from the 6.7-inch Galaxy S10 X which will have 5G support.

Samsung can obviously put these numbers on the next flagship but it will be stretching the price bracket to an unprecedented level. The Galaxy S10 prices rumored already show that it won’t be cheap by any stretch of the imagination. Its 8GB/512GB configuration is expected to cost a whopping ~$1,480.

Do you think Samsung should offer the 12GB Galaxy S10+ with 1TB storage regardless of how much it costs? More importantly, would you be willing to pay for it? Let us know in the comments below.

First carrier-locked Galaxy S9 Android Pie update rolling out in the US

The Galaxy S9 Android Pie update seems to be finally rolling out to carrier-locked devices in the US. The Galaxy S9 and S9+ on Comcast’s Xfinity network are getting the Pie update as we write this, and we should see more carriers in the US – especially the big four – start releasing the update in the coming days. It’s worth mentioning that the unlocked Galaxy S9 and S9+ don’t seem to be getting Pie just yet, but that shouldn’t be the case for long, either.

You can check if the update is available for your device from the Software update menu in the phone’s Settings app. The update will show up on its own at some point, but that can take some time so it’s best to manually check. If the update isn’t available over the air, we have the Android Pie firmware for the Comcast-branded Galaxy S9 and S9+ in our firmware database (S9 | S9+) that you can flash using a Windows PC to get on Pie right now.

The update brings with it the January 2019 security patch. For details on what features and changes Android Pie brings to the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, check out our One UI (Android Pie) feature focus series.
