Galaxy S20 camera’s Night mode improvements shown in leaked photos

The Galaxy S20 series, due to be unveiled in less than 48 hours, will have plenty of new stuff to offer. Upgraded cameras are expected to be among the main attractions of the new flagship, and while there’s still plenty of time left until Samsung puts the Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra on retail shelves, it seems someone has already managed to test their cameras.

Twitter leakster Max Weinbach has shared photos of two low-light scenes that he says have been captured with a Galaxy S10 and a Galaxy S20. We can only assume the Galaxy S20 used was not the Galaxy S20 Ultra, as the Galaxy S20 photo isn’t a great deal better than the ones taken with a Galaxy S10. The Galaxy S20 photos are a bit brighter in both scenes, but we can only see notably higher detail in one of the two shots.

It won’t be entirely surprising that the Galaxy S20 camera won’t provide a massive jump in quality over the Galaxy S10. The Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S20+ are said to be equipped with a 12MP primary rear camera that has a 1.8-micron pixel size, 0.4 micron larger than the Galaxy S10 and Note 10’s 12MP cameras, but the S20 camera is also expected to have an aperture of F1.8, whereas the Galaxy S10 and Note 10 camera have a wider aperture of F1.5.

And until we see samples from the Galaxy S20 Ultra, it’s impossible to say how the top-end Galaxy S20 model — with its 108MP primary camera — will fare in both nighttime and general photography. We can imagine it will be substantially better than the Galaxy S20 and S20+ on both fronts, but we will have to wait and see if that will actually be the case.

Samsung reportedly aims to sell 2.5 million Galaxy Z Flip units

Samsung’s first phone with a foldable screen, the $1,980 Galaxy Fold, went through a lot of criticism and hurdles before it was finally launched. The company managed to sell only 500,000 units of the device, as per the information from a key executive. Now, it is being reported that the smartphone giant plans to sell a lot more Galaxy Z Flips in comparison.

Korea Herald reports that Samsung is aiming to sell 2.5 million units of the Galaxy Z Flip this year. The price of the foldable clamshell phone is expected to be anywhere between $1,300 and $1,400, which is much lower than that of the original Galaxy Fold. Still, analysts and industry insiders are skeptical about the number.

The Galaxy Z Flip features a 6.7-inch, ultra-tall (22:9 aspect ratio) Infinity Flex AMOLED screen, Snapdragon 855 processor, 8GB RAM, and 256GB storage. It has a 12MP+12MP dual-camera on the rear, a 10MP selfie camera, and a 3300mAh battery. It also has stereo speakers, a side-mounted fingerprint reader, and wireless charging.

The Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung’s second foldable display phone, will be announced tomorrow during the company’s Unpacked 2020 press event. The South Korean smartphone giant released a 30-second teaser on TV during the Oscars 2020 broadcast earlier today. The Galaxy S20 series and the newer Galaxy Buds will also be unveiled tomorrow.

Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G with 16GB RAM to reportedly debut at Sprint

Samsung is yet to unveil its next-generation Galaxy S series officially. Still, almost all the information about the upcoming phones has made it to the internet in one way or the other. Apart from their images, specifications, and pricing, we even know which carriers will sell the devices on their networks.

According to tipster Max Weinbach, the highest-end variant of the Galaxy S20 Ultra (SM-G988U) will be sold by Sprint in the US. This variant will feature a whopping 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 512GB UFS 3.0 storage.

Sprint will also sell 128GB variant of the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G

Sprint will also stock the more affordable version of the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G, which comes with 12GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. Both the variants will have a microSD card slot which will be compatible with up to 1TB cards. The 128GB and 512GB variants of the phone could be priced at $1,399 and $1,549, respectively.

The Galaxy S20 Ultra will reportedly feature a 6.9-inch Infinity-O Dynamic AMOLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. Its quad-camera setup is expected to feature a 108MP primary camera, a 48MP telephoto camera (10x optical zoom), a 12MP ultra-wide camera, and a 3D ToF camera. The primary camera is expected to support 8K video recording. At the front, the S20 Ultra will reportedly feature a 40MP selfie camera that can capture 4K 60fps videos.

In the US, the phone will come equipped with the Snapdragon 865 processor. It will run Android 10 with One UI 2.0 and will be powered by a 5,000 mAh battery. Leaked specifications also point towards an under-display fingerprint reader, IP68 certification, stereo speakers, Samsung Pay, Wi-Fi ax, and 5G. It will come with a 45W fast charger in the box. The phone also features wireless charging as well as reverse wireless charging.

Pre-orders of the Galaxy S20 Ultra are expected to be bundled with free Galaxy Buds+ wireless earphones in some markets.

Samsung teases Galaxy Z Flip during Oscars broadcast

With the Unpacked 2020 event approaching, Samsung has started to tease its upcoming smartphones, even though all of them have been leaked already. The South Korean smartphone giant has teased its second foldable screen smartphone two days ahead of the official announcement.

The company fully revealed the Galaxy Z Flip smartphone in a 30-second commercial that aired on TV during the broadcast of Academy Awards (Oscars) 2020. The phone appears in its purple and black avatars. The video starts off showing the dual-camera setup and the hinge and then reveals the foldable screen with that beautiful blooming animation.

The small, 1.06-inch cover screen is also seen in the teaser video, showing a caller’s name and an option to answer or reject the call. The Galaxy Z Flip is shown sitting on its own on a table during a video call. We can also see that the phone doesn’t fold completely flat, and there’s a noticeable gap between the two halves. In comparison, the recently launched Motorola RAZR folds completely flat.

A small print for the ad says, “You may notice a small crease in the center of the main screen, which is a natural characteristic of the screen.” We now know for sure that the phone’s screen will have a crease, just like the one on the Galaxy Fold. The teaser video ends with the “Change the shape of the future” tagline and the date of the Unpacked 2020 event.

Samsung will unveil Galaxy Z Flip alongside the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, Galaxy S20 Ultra, and the Galaxy Buds+ on February 11 in San Francisco during the Unpacked 2020 press conference.

Galaxy Z Flip X Thom Browne to kick off Samsung’s high fashion collabs

One of the major differences between the Galaxy Z Flip and the Galaxy Fold is that the former will be more attainable. While not cheap by any stretch of the imagination, at least it’s not going to cost $2,000 like the original foldable smartphone.

Granted, that does mean that the specs won’t be entirely flagship level, but that may not really bother the demographic that Samsung is targeting with the Galaxy Z Flip. It appears that Samsung will also have a number of high fashion collaborations for its clamshell foldable.

Galaxy Z Flip X Thom Browne may not be the only high fashion tie-up

According to a report out of South Korea, Samsung has been working with US-based designer brand Thom Browne (owned by Italy’s Ermenegildo Zegna Group) on a Galaxy Z Flip X Thom Browne collaboration. A cryptic teaser was posted on Thom Browne’s official Instagram account which featured the logos of both companies without any explanation.

It’s unclear how the Galaxy Z Flip X Thom Browne edition will be different compared to the regular Galaxy Z Flip, but it goes without saying that the changes will be cosmetic only. Nothing will be changed under the hood. This is essentially like Apple’s collaboration with French high fashion icon Hermès for the Apple Watch Hermès edition. It offers customers a range of cases and bands from the brand in addition to exclusive watch faces that go with the overall aesthetic.

The report mentions that Samsung may have similar tie-ups with other fashion brands to cement the Galaxy Z Flip’s image as a fashionable accessory. This will drive up the price, though. The Galaxy Z Flip X Thom Browne edition is reportedly going to cost 3 million won ($2,500), almost double that of the regular model.

If this is indeed happening, we’re likely going to hear about Samsung’s collaboration with Thom Browne at the Unpacked event on February 11.

Samsung cuts back on MWC presence amid Coronavirus scare

After Ericsson, LG, Nvidia, and ZTE, Samsung is the latest company to reconsider its MWC (Mobile World Congress) 2020 presence. Similar to various tech brands, the South Korean electronics giant has decided to cut down on the number of executives who will travel to the expo due to the Coronavirus scare.

According to people familiar with the matter, various Samsung executives from its Korean and US offices have canceled or planned to cancel their trips to Barcelona, Spain, where the trade show is set to happen in the second half of this month. As of now, the company still plans to attend the event and have a booth on the show floor, but its plans can change leading up to the event.

As per CNET’s report, we can see a halt on important dealmaking between high-level executives, something that usually happens behind closed doors at MWC. The global smartphone leader is the biggest brand to change its plans regarding its MWC presence.

Samsung used to unveil its flagship smartphones during MWC in Barcelona, but over the past few years, it has shifted the unveiling of Galaxy S series devices to its Unpacked event that happens in the US a couple of weeks ahead of Mobile World Congress. The company is expected to announce the Galaxy S20 series, Galaxy Z Flip, and the Galaxy Buds+ on February 11 in San Francisco.

Coronavirus is a pneumonia-like pandemic disease that was first discovered in the Wuhan city of China and then spread to various continents since December 2019. Over 37,000 people around the world have been affected by the virus and over 800 people have died due to the disease.

The spread of the disease had adverse effects on the tech industry, as most of the device manufacturing happens in China. Various brands and companies have closed their factories, shut down their stores and offices in China, and implemented restrictions on travel.

Since MWC attracts more than 100,000 visitors every year, it might be a good idea to restrict the number of people that attend the event in an attempt to stop spreading the disease.

Samsung Galaxy Buds+ get fully revealed in hands-on video

The Galaxy Buds+ are expected to be unveiled on February 11 alongside four new smartphones, the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, Galaxy S20 Ultra, and the Galaxy Z Flip. However, images of the earphones along with their detailed specifications have been leaked already. Now, a complete hands-on video of Samsung’s upcoming truly wireless earphones has appeared on the internet.

Reputable leakster Roland Quandt was able to get his hands on the Galaxy Buds+ via a European retailer, but as unbelievable as it sounds, similar things have happened in the past. He has uploaded a complete unboxing video of the unreleased wireless earbuds along with his initial impressions. As you might expect, the specs list that was leaked a few days ago turned out to be extremely accurate.

The blue variant of the Galaxy Buds+ (SM-R175N) is shown from all the angles in the eleven-minute video. The earbuds might not look very different from their predecessors, but they offer a great all-round upgrade for just $20 over the pricing of last year’s Galaxy Buds (read our review). The newer earbuds feature AKG-tuned dual-drivers (tweeter and woofer) for improved audio quality, three microphones on each side for better call quality, and double the battery life.

The earbuds come with three pairs of ear wings and ear tips, and a USB Type-C cable in the box. Similar to the previous-generation Galaxy Buds, the newer ones feature optical sensors for automatically pausing music when they’re taken out of ears. The pill-shaped case now appears to feature a glossy paint job instead of last year’s matte finish.

Priced at just $149, Samsung’s new wireless earbuds also feature ambient sound passthrough, increased talk time, wireless charging, Spotify gesture integration, and Game Mode. The South Korean electronics giant has also released a brand new iOS companion app that offers customization features to those who want to use the Galaxy Buds+ with an iPhone. The earphones will be offered in four colors: black, blue, red, and white.

These AirPods competitors are expected to be bundled for free in a few markets for those who pre-order the Galaxy S20+ or the Galaxy S20 Ultra.
