Samsung registers Couphone branding in Europe—but what’s it for?

Samsung has submitted the required paperwork to the European Union Intellectual Property Office to reserve a new brand name: Couphone—and before you ask, that isn’t a typo. That’s the peculiar moniker the firm is interested in.

Truth be told, we don’t have any information pertaining to the Couphone. Our first instinct was to compare the likeness of the branding to coupon, leading us to believe it could be some sort of digital money-saving service.

But that doesn’t appear to be the case. Samsung describes it as a “cellular phone” in the documentation it sent to the European Union Intellectual Property Office; however, it probably isn’t a conventional smartphone.

What is the Couphone?

So… What is it? Well, we did some digging and found that cou means neck in French, sparking speculation that the firm’s working on a neck-based wearable—like the critically-acclaimed FrontRow—with cellular capabilities.

Nothing’s confirmed, though.

Samsung might not be world’s top smartphone vendor in Q4 2017

Samsung has been the world’s top smartphone vendor for the first, second and third quarters of 2017. Many would have been expecting the company to continue this momentum in the fourth and final quarter. However, if a new report by TrendForce is believed, Samsung might lose this title to Apple in the fourth quarter of this year.

It’s estimated that global smartphone production volume will reach its peak for the year in Q4 2017 with a total of 425 million units, a 6.3 percent increase year-over-year. Global smartphone shipments for the entire year are estimated at 1.46 billion units.

Samsung’s Q4 2017 shipments

Samsung’s production volume reportedly reached its peak for the year in Q3 2017 and is now projected to fall in Q4 2017. TrendForce estimates that Samsung shipped 81 million units in the previous quarter, accounting for 24.5 percent of the market.

Its expected to ship 77 million units in Q4 2017, registering a 5 percent decline from the previous quarter. This would give the company a market share of 18.2 percent in the final quarter.

Samsung is expected to scale back the production of its high-end devices like the Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S8. It’s apparently going to do that in response to strong demand for Apple’s latest iPhones.

Apple is now expected to become the world’s largest smartphone vendor in Q4 2017 with a market share of 19.1 percent. It expects iPhone shipments to hit 81 million this quarter with the iPhone X accounting for 33 percent of the total.

Bear in mind that this is just one market research company. There are countless others that have their own predictions for Q4 2017 smartphone shipments. It remains to be seen how this plays out.

Dual SIM Galaxy S7 edge is now receiving the October security update

The latest security patch – not counting the one for November that is yet to make it to any device and was only recently detailed – is now hitting the dual SIM version of the Galaxy S7 edge, roughly three weeks after the standard Galaxy S7 and S7 edge got the update. The update is out in Taiwan now, and it should be making its way to other markets where the dual SIM models are available in the near future.

October security fixes now available for the dual SIM Galaxy S7 edge

The October security patch brings fixes for 215 Android vulnerabilities and six that made their way into Samsung’s version of Android. For those wondering, there’s no fix for the Wi-Fi KRACK exploit in the October patch; that will instead be included in the November security update. There’s no telling how long it will take for this month’s patch to start rolling out, and we guess development on Android 8.0 Oreo may act as an obstacle.

You can download the latest update by heading into the Settings » Software update menu and hitting the Download updates manually option (do make sure you’re on a Wi-Fi connection to prevent unnecessary mobile data usage)If you don’t see the update on your phone, you can also download the full firmware from our database and manually upgrade. We’re not seeing an update for the regular dual SIM Galaxy S7 yet, but it shouldn’t be long before that changes.

Firmware Details:

Live images of Samsung’s SM-W2018 clamshell flagship will make you want one

There aren’t a lot of companies out there making smartphones in the clamshell form factor. Samsung does release a couple of Android-powered flip phones every year in select markets. It has been working on a new flagship flip phone for the past few months.

It’s going to be called the SM-W2018 when it’s released and now that live images of this handset have leaked online, you may find yourself with the desire of owning one.

Previous reports have suggested that the SM-W2018 is going to have flagship-level specifications. It’s expected to feature two 4.2-inch Full HD display with a Snapdragon 835 processor, 6GB RAM and 64GB storage. It may also feature a 12-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front camera as well as a 2,300mAh battery.

The leaked live images show just how great the two displays are going to look. Moreover, the build quality itself appears to have a very premium look and feel.

We heard last month that the SM-W2018 has entered testing. We also spotted a firmware for the device, W2018ZCU0AQI9. There haven’t been more reports about this handset since.

Samsung’s flip phones are normally released in China so it’s possible that the SM-W2018 may not make its way out of the People’s Republic as well. Samsung hasn’t confirmed when it’s going to launch the SM-W2018. Some reports claim that it’s going to cost over $2,000 in the country.

Galaxy X foldable smartphone interface possibly revealed by patent

There have been countless reports about Samsung’s foldable smartphone, commonly referred to as the Galaxy X. The company is expected to release this handset at some point next year. We’ve never really seen a glimpse of what the foldable smartphone’s user interface might look like.

A recent patent application from Samsung might possibly offer us our first look at the interface. The patent includes screenshots of a dual-screen interface, possibly taken from a prototype of the Galaxy X.

Galaxy X foldable smartphone

There is no shortage of patents related to Samsung’s foldable smartphone but none have included screenshots like we find in this one.

Titled “Electronic Device Comprising Multiple Display and Method for Controlling Thereof,” the patent gives us an idea of what using a device with two separate displays might feel like visually.

The user interface itself appears to be similar to the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S7. It can be used in both portrait and landscape modes for different usage scenarios. The screenshots show that it’s possible to have apps and even a recent apps menu on each display.

This interface suggests that the foldable smartphone is going to have two separate panels instead of one continuous display panel. If that is the case, the Galaxy X might look similar to ZTE’s recently launched Axon M foldable smartphone.

Samsung filed this patent back in 2016. It goes without saying that if this device is released next year, the user interface will be more in line with the one we find on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8.

Still no word as yet from Samsung on when it’s planning on launching this device.

Unresponsive microphone on your Galaxy Note 8 or Galaxy S8? Try this!

If the microphone on your Galaxy Note 8 or Galaxy S8 isn’t as responsive as it once was, try blowing into the USB area to clear any dust and lint that may have built up. We know, we know: it sounds like a belated April Fools joke. But it isn’t.

A member of our team found that the ‘Hey Bixby‘ command was a lot more responsive after clearing the microphone using the aforementioned technique, while one of my family members reportedly noticed an improvement in call quality.

Galaxy Note 8 is proving to be problematic for some owners

This week, it was revealed that some Galaxy Note 8 owners are experiencing a bug, which renders the handset unresponsive when either the Contacts or Messages application are opened. Samsung’s thought to be working on a patch, though.

Samsung raises awareness for endangered animals with its Frame TV

Samsung launched its high-end Frame TV earlier this year. The company has designed this product to look more like an art piece than a conventional television set. It has been showcasing this product at art galleries and museums in various markets.

Samsung is now teaming up with National Geographic to raise awareness for endangered animals while also availing the opportunity to plug its Frame TV. The company is participating in National Geographic’s photo exhibition for endangered animals by installing Frame TV units at the venue.

Raising awareness, one TV at a time

The Frame TV was first released in 55-inch and 65-inch models. Samsung also started selling a 43-inch model last week.

The National Geographic photo exhibition will run until March 4 at the War Memorial of Korea in Seoul. The exhibition is going to showcase photos of endangered animals on Samsung’s Frame TVs.

The Frame TV has an Art Mode feature that displays exclusive works of art like paintings on the TV. It’s also possible for users to display their personal photo libraries in Art Mode.

Photos of 5,000 endangered animals will be showcased during the exhibition on TVs provided by Samsung. The company is also going to sell 30 photos of endangered animals at the exhibitions and all of the proceeds will be donated to environmental conservation causes.

Mophie releases two fantastic battery cases for the Galaxy Note 8

Mophie has announced the Charge Force and Juice Pack, a lightweight wireless-charging cover and an integrated battery case, for the Galaxy Note 8. They’re priced at $49.95 and $99.95, respectively, but you’ll need to shell out a little more if you opt for the former.

Why’s that, I hear you ask? Well, the Charge Force is merely an ultra-thin protective case. It’s only once it’s paired with Mophie’s Charge Force Wireless Base, which retails for $39.95 in the United States, that it can be used to charge your Galaxy Note 8 on the go.

Charge Force (left), Juice Pack (right)

The Juice Pack, on the other hand, comes with an integrated 2,950mAh battery. Mophie claims that’s enough juice to provide 36-hours of additional talk time. The Galaxy Note 8, for comparison, comes with a 3,300mAh cell—so you’ll have a total of 6,250mAh worth of power.

Mophie’s Charge Force and Juice Pack are already out of stock

Both the Charge Force and Juice Pack are now available to order from Mophie’s website; however, at the time of writing, they’ve already out of stock. We’d recommend monitoring the firm’s social media to be the first to find out when they’re restocked.

Samsung’s Exynos 7872 SoC receives Bluetooth certification

Samsung’s upcoming Exynos 7872 system-on-chip (SoC), which Galaxy Club believes could debut on board the much-rumored Galaxy A3 (2018), has been certified by the Bluetooth SIG, suggesting that its release is right around the corner.

Information surrounding the Exynos 7827 is sparse

Not a lot is known about the Exynos 7872, other than that it bundles compatibility for Bluetooth 4.2. Rumors fresh out of China, however, suggest that it’s a 14-nanometer hexa-core SoC that’s equipped with a Mali-G71 GPU.
