Salesforce will only support a few Samsung Galaxy and Nexus smartphones to avoid fragmentation

Salesforce has announced that it will support only certain Samsung Galaxy and Google Nexus smartphones starting with the update to its Android app. This is an unusual strategy from Salesforce to avoid spending time and money in testing the app for hundreds of Android devices and multiple versions of the operating system.

Salesforce explained in its support document that it is taking this step “due to the wide array of available Android devices, we are targeting our support to a select number of Android devices to continue improving our overall Salesforce1 for Android user experience.” Salesforce’s unusual decision will improve Samsung’s already strong position in the Android smartphone market.

The Salesforce1 app will support Galaxy S5, Galaxy S6, Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note 10.1 and the Galaxy Tab A 9.7. The Google Nexus 5X and the Google Nexus 6P are the two Nexus devices currently supported by Salesforce. Users can install the app on other Android devices, but the company won’t actively support them or fix bugs for those devices.

Samsung reportedly won’t be manufacturing A11 processor for Apple

Samsung’s hopes to become the chip supplier for Apple’s coming iPhone have reportedly been destroyed. According to a report from China’s Economic Daily News, TSMC has obtained all of Apple’s A11 chip orders. This might be due to the “chipgate” issue Apple faced with the A9 chipset in the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus.

According to the report, TSMC will build the A11 chipset on the 10nm FinFET process for the iPhone that will be released next year. The Taiwan-based foundry has already begun completing the final design for A11, and the company might start a small volume production as soon as Q3, 2017. TSMC is already the exclusive supplier of the A10 chipset that will be used in the upcoming Apple iPhone 7.

Apart from Apple, TSMC is expected to make 10nm chipsets for Xilinx, MediaTek, and HiSilicon. TSMC co-CEO Mark Lui said, “our first 10nm customer product has been produced with satisfactory functional yield. So far, three customer products have been taped out to us,” at the company’s investors meeting. Samsung is expected to manufacture 10nm-based Snapdragon 830 chips for Qualcomm.

T-Mobile updates Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 to Android Marshmallow

Verizon updated the Galaxy Tab S2 to Android 6.0.1 last month, and AT&T did the same a couple of days ago. It’s now time for T-Mobile to do the same. T-Mobile has finally started updating the Galaxy Tab S2 on its network to Android Marshmallow in the US.

The LTE variant of the Galaxy Tab S2 (SM-T817T) on T-Mobile’s network has begun receiving Android 6.0.1 through a firmware-over-the-air (FOTA) update. The 1022MB update bumps the Galaxy Tab S2′s firmware up to T817TUVU2BPF1 and brings new features such as App Permissions, Doze, Google Now on Tap, multi-user mode, Nexus Imprint compatibility for the fingerprint sensor, and an updated TouchWiz UI among others.

If you haven’t received the update, head on to Settings » About device » Software update» Check for updates.

AT&T rolling out the latest security update for the Galaxy Note 5

Galaxy Note 5 owners on AT&T should keep their eyes peeled for an update notification today. The carrier has started rolling out a new firmware update for this handset which brings the latest security patches for the Galaxy Note 5. The update is being sent out over-the-air and since it’s not a major release there’s no compulsion for users to download it over a Wi-Fi network.

Software version MMB29K. N920AUCS2BPG1 has now been released by AT&T for the Galaxy Note 5. The update weighs in at 22.6MB and brings the July security patch to this handset. In order to receive this update over-the-air, users must be on the current software version ending in PE6. They can either wait for the update notification or open Settings and go to About device under the System category followed by Software update > Check for updates. All they have to do then is to follow the instructions on the screen to download the update. Verizon and T-Mobile have already released this update for the Galaxy Note 5 on their networks, while AT&T only released Marshmallow for the Galaxy Note 5 less than a month ago.

Samsung Pay Beta makes its way to the Gear S2

When Samsung took the wraps off the Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic back in October 2015, it promised customers that it would bring a dedicated version of its mobile payment platform to the devices in the not-too-distant future. Unfortunately, chatter surrounding the matter quickly died down following the smartwatches official launch, but now, almost a year later, the South Korean company has launched a beta version of its dedicated Samsung Pay application for the units via the Gear Manager application.

It’s important to note, however, that unlike its smartphone counterpart, Samsung Pay for the Gear S2 or Gear S2 Classic doesn’t support magnetic strip transmission, so you’ll only be able to use the service with NFC readers. Don’t worry, though, as the majority of retail stores in the United States, which is currently the only region where the beta is available, have already made the switch over to NFC terminals also opposed to the antiquated swipe system that has been installed in bricks-and-mortar shops for a little over a decade now.

If you own a Gear S2, are located in the US and would like to get in the beta testing action, all you have to do is ensure that you have the Value Pack firmware installed on your device and the latest version of the Samsung Gear Manager application on your smartphone. Once you have them, tap the Samsung Pay Beta option located in the Gear Manager app to get started. You will then be guided through a straightforward step-by-step configuration process, which will transfer your credit/debit card information over to your watch.

Samsung Connect Auto will be launched by AT&T next month

Samsung Connect Auto is an affordable connected car solution that the company introduced earlier this year. It has developed an ecosystem of services and products that aim to provide a safe, eco-friendly and more fun driving experience to users. The device itself is a little dongle that plugs into the OBD-II port found under the steering wheel of every car manufactured since the ’90s. The dongle will provide users with real-time alerts to improve their driving behavior, offer them tips on how to improve fuel efficiency and even offer a Wi-Fi connection, this entire connected car solution is secured by Samsung Knox.

Back when Samsung Connect Auto was unveiled the company said that it will initially be launched by AT&T in the United States. It requires a cellular connection to function and provide features such as real-time car tracking using GPS and LTE as well as automatic notifications to driver’s contacts and accident concierge services following an accident. Latest news reports say that AT&T is going to launch Samsung Connect Auto in the United States next month and that it’s going to offer this connected car solution on a monthly payment plan. Samsung is expected to start selling this device to corporate clients in the coming months.

[Video] Is this the Galaxy Note 7′s official USB Type-C cable?

We expected the Galaxy S7 to come with a USB Type-C port, but Samsung chose to stick to a regular microUSB connector in order to maintain compatibility with the Gear VR and also to save people from the hassle of switching to a new type of USB cable. But the company is finally making the switch to a USB Type-C port with the upcoming Galaxy Note 7, and we possibly have our first look at the official Type-C cable that will accompany the device.

A video published on YouTube shows a USB Type-C cable that looks pretty similar to Samsung’s regular microUSB cables, with a packaging similar to the one used by the Korean manufacturer. Supporting the possibility of this being the Note 7′s cable is the model number – EP-DN930CWE – seen on the plastic surrounding the cable. SM-N930 is the model number the Galaxy Note 7 is expected to carry; if you’re still thinking this points to a flat version of the device, well, you are likely to be disappointed as it is pretty much guaranteed that the regular and curved versions of the Note 7 will be one and the same.

Thanks to the switch to the USB Type-C port, Samsung is expected to launch a new Gear VR with support for the new connector. It’s not confirmed at this point, but unless the company can make a really small microUSB to Type-C converter that fits into the existing Gear VR, a second-generation Gear VR is most likely on the cards.

Check out the video below to see the Note 7′s USB Type-C cable. Right around the end you can see the cable compared to Samsung’s official microUSB cable as well.
