Galaxy Z Flip lacks DeX support but Samsung could add it later via update

The Galaxy Z Flip appears to be Samsung’s latest smartphone to lack DeX support, at least judging by a photo shared recently by @Kuma_Sleepy via Twitter. It showcases the search results, or lack thereof, for ‘DeX’ on a Z Flip in South Korea, and seemingly confirms that the feature is missing from the device.

South Korea was among the first markets to receive the Galaxy Z Flip and to sell it out in less than 8 hours of availability. One early adopter has discovered that DeX is missing from the device, but hopefully, this is just a temporary setback.

The Galaxy Z Flip could get DeX support via firmware update

The original Galaxy Fold also lacked DeX support at launch, but Samsung added the feature later through a firmware update. The Galaxy Z Flip may get a similar treatment, or at least this is what we’d expect from a smartphone that comes with a price tag of $1,380.

However, this is not a guarantee. Lack of DeX support at launch is not something specific to Samsung’s foldable devices. As we’ve discussed in our review, the feature is also missing from the Galaxy S10 Lite even though it is available on the Galaxy A90 5G, and both models feature the Snapdragon 855 chipset. The Galaxy Z Flip is powered by the Snapdragon 855+ so, technically speaking, all of these smartphones should be capable of supporting DeX.

It’s a mystery how Samsung decides which smartphones should or shouldn’t get DeX at launch or at all, but all we can do is hope that the Galaxy Z Flip will start supporting the feature sooner rather than later.

[Poll] Are you going to buy the Galaxy Z Flip?

Whether you love it or hate it, the Galaxy Z Flip is difficult to ignore, so we’re making a poll for it. It’s one of the most unique smartphones on the market right now, and it’s turning heads for many reasons, such as the exquisite build or the polarizing price tag.

The Galaxy Z Flip was unveiled at Unpacked along with the Galaxy S20 series, but interestingly enough, Samsung has launched its foldable device ahead of its trio of ‘candy-bar’ flagships. The Galaxy Z Flip had a fairly short pre-registration period but it is now shipping to customers in various markets, at least where it hasn’t already been sold out.

This is Samsung’s second foldable device based on flexible display technology, and some of our readers who have skipped the original Galaxy Fold have been waiting for a less experimental device to drop. The Galaxy Z Flip seems to be just that, as it builds on the foundation laid down by the Fold and improves key areas including the durability of the flexible screen.

We’d love to hear our readers’ opinions regarding the Galaxy Z Flip, so we’re inviting you to participate in the poll below. Are you going to buy Samsung’s new foldable? Will you skip this model as well? Are you undecided? Vote below and feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section.

Reasons why the Galaxy S20 is a worthy upgrade over the Galaxy S9

Galaxy S9 owners who have skipped last year’s flagship series might now want to consider upgrading to one of the latest Galaxy S20 models. Although the Galaxy S9 is still a decent performer in various areas, its time as a flagship device has passed and the Galaxy S20 presents numerous advantages over it.

Today we’re looking at some of these key differences, from better performance to improved software support, and why Galaxy S9 owners might want to upgrade.

Bigger displays, smaller bodies

Samsung continued to trim down its screen bezels over the past couple of years since the Galaxy S9 was introduced. Its screen-to-body ratio kept improving, and it reached a point where the Galaxy S20 with its 6.2-inch display has a smaller footprint than the Galaxy S9+ featuring a similarly-sized 6.2-inch panel.

Of course, the Galaxy S20 Ultra is still a giant beast – arguably for good reasons – and there’s no way around it. Either way, the increased screen-to-body ratio on Samsung’s latest flagship series brings noticeable advantages and a more streamlined design.

120Hz refresh rate displays

The Galaxy S20 is Samsung’s first flagship series to adopt a display with a refresh rate higher than 60Hz. The Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra all come with a 120Hz display, and this provides a couple of benefits over lower refresh rate panels.

Essentially, a 120Hz panel will make animations look twice as smooth and responsive compared to 60Hz. This effect is difficult to appreciate through videos, so if you’re skeptical, your best bet to see the difference is to try the Galaxy S20 first-hand. Go to a local store, make sure the S20s they have on display have been set to 120Hz mode, and let the smooth animations do the talking.

Better… Much better cameras

This is one of those areas that have changed drastically over the past couple of years. The Galaxy S9 was launched at a time when Samsung was transitioning from a single to a multi-rear camera setup, and the flagship series itself is split between these two philosophies. The Galaxy S9 has a single main camera, while the Galaxy S9+ has a dual-camera combo.

The Galaxy S20 series is simply in another class. Both the standard model and the Galaxy S20+ have 12MP wide sensors, 12MP ultra-wide shooters, and 64MP telephoto units with 3x optical and 30x digital zoom. The Galaxy S20+ even adds a ToF depth sensor.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy S20 Ultra is in a class of its own, even when compared to the S20 and S20+. It has a 108MP main camera, a 48MP telephoto lens with 10 x optical and 100x digital zoom, a 12MP ultra-wide shooter, and a ToF sensor. Not to mention that selfie enthusiasts work with a generous 40MP front-facing camera.

Bigger batteries with better fast charging

While the Galaxy S9 and S9+ come with 3,000mAh and 3,500mAh batteries, the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, and Galaxy S20 Ultra boast 4,000mAh, 4,500mAh, and 5,000mAh units, respectively.

That larger batteries are needed for the more power-hungry screens, but they will also provide better autonomy and faster charging. The Galaxy S9 has 15W wired fast charging capabilities, while the Galaxy S20 series tops 15W wirelessly. On wired charging, the Galaxy S20 and S20+ are capable of 25W, while the S20 Ultra boasts 45W.

5G is the future, and the Galaxy S20 is more futureproof

5G is not yet available in every market, which is why Samsung offers the Galaxy S20 in LTE flavor in some regions. But if you want to buy a more futureproofed flagship then the Galaxy S20 is it.

The Galaxy S9 lineup will forever be limited to 4G networking, and there’s no way around it. It’s a hardware limitation that cannot be overcome unless you want to upgrade to a new flagship. Why not make it the S20?

More memory = better multitasking

Memory usage has increased considerably over the years. Having 4GB or 6GB of RAM on the Galaxy S9 and S9+ was impressive a couple of years ago, but nowadays, even the Galaxy A51 ships with those exact same RAM capacities.

The more RAM a smartphone has, the more apps it can keep open at once, and the better it is at multitasking. The Galaxy S20 lineup has plenty of RAM, ranging from 8GB on the Galaxy S20/S20+ to a whopping 16GB on the Galaxy S20 Ultra.

On top of that, the Galaxy S20 has more base storage at 128GB built-in, while the Galaxy S9 series had 64GB of storage at the lowest.

Android OS Support

The last, but not necessarily the least reason to upgrade from the Galaxy S9 to the Galaxy S20 is better Android OS support. You knew this was coming, but the reality of the situation is inevitable. Samsung offers two major OS updates for its flagship phones, and the Galaxy S9 already got updated from Android Oreo to Android Pie and Android 10.

Support for the Galaxy S9 series will now be reduced to security patches, while the Galaxy S20 lineup is guaranteed to be updated to at least Android 12 over the next few years. If you want to experience future Android OS versions and benefit from better software support then it’s probably time for you to upgrade to one of Samsung’s new flagships.

Are you planning on buying one of the Galaxy models? Are there any Galaxy S9 features that you’re afraid you might be missing once you switch to the newer flagship? And what are some of the main Galaxy S20 advantages that might persuade you to adopt one of the latest models? Let us know in the comment section.

Samsung explains wizardry of Galaxy S20 Ultra’s 108MP camera sensor

The Galaxy S20 Ultra’s claim to fame is no doubt the 108MP camera at its back. This is the highest-resolution camera yet on any Samsung smartphone, and, as expected, the Korean giant has gone into detail about how the 108MP camera sensor — called ISOCELL Bright HM1 — makes for “brighter ultra-high-res images.”

The wizardry behind the new sensor is a technology Samsung calls Nonacell. The Bright HM1 has 108 million 0.8 micrometer pixels, and using Nonacell technology, the sensor combines nine neighboring pixels to create a large pixel size of 2.4 micrometer. The photos you get are 12 megapixels in resolution, but thanks to Nonacell tech, the photos taken by the 108MP sensor benefit from much higher light absorption than any other smartphone camera sensor out there.

When multiple adjacent pixels are combined into one pixel, camera sensors usually suffer from color interference, but Samsung says its ISOCELL Plus technology makes sure that isn’t a concern on the S20 Ultra’s 108MP camera by placing physical barriers between each pixel. Samsung also says that the 108MP camera can create 12MP photos with 3x lossless digital zoom by “directly converting the pixels using an embedded hardware IP.”

Naturally, there are a lot of buzzwords that Samsung uses to explain its new camera sensor, but it does have us excited to see what the Galaxy S20 Ultra camera will be capable of. We’ll be reviewing the S20 Ultra (and its more humble siblings) in the near future, and in the meantime, you can read our hands-on impressions to find out what we thought about the phone after getting to play with it at Samsung Unpacked.

Galaxy Z Flip goes on sale today, stocks quickly running out

Last year, there was a two-month gap between the Galaxy Fold’s official unveiling and its initial release date. But for its second foldable phone, Samsung isn’t wasting any time. Announced on February 11, the Galaxy Z Flip is already on sale in the US and Korea. However, as we learned yesterday, Samsung ran out of stock in Korea in around eight hours, and things aren’t as simple in the US, either.

Right now, the unlocked Galaxy Z Flip is out of stock on the Samsung US website. If you wish to purchase Samsung’s clamshell foldable, you only have the option of going with the carrier-locked version from AT&T or Sprint, though you will get a neat little discount if you buy the phone from Samsung’s website and trade-in your existing phone. The highest you will get is $440 off the $1380 full price of the phone if you trade-in a Galaxy Note 10+, and the discount also applies if you decide to go with an installment plan.

If you order the AT&T or Sprint version, the device will start shipping from February 18th. If you want one today itself, the best option is to try and find a local store that has the Galaxy Z Flip in stock. You could also just wait for stocks to replenish on Samsung’s website for the unlocked model. That may take a few days, though, as Samsung makes its foldable phones in limited quantities.

When is the Galaxy Z Flip coming to other markets? Well, Samsung doesn’t have a proper date to tell us, though it is taking pre-orders/pre-bookings in many countries, and you can check if that’s the case in your country by visiting your local Samsung website. Do check out our hands-on impressions of the device as well — and look forward to a full review soon — if you’re interested in picking one up.

Samsung offers a bit of backstory on the Galaxy Z Flip’s design

Every time Samsung launches a new flagship smartphone, it spends the next couple of weeks taking us behind the scenes and explaining how it came up with the unique features and/or design of that smartphone. The company’s doing just that for the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Z Flip, and today, it is talking about the “story behind the Galaxy Z Flip’s fashion-forward design” in a new post on the Samsung Newsroom.

The most interesting info in the post is about how Samsung designed the Hideaway Hinge, which allows the Z Flip to stay open at an angle. Samsung says it did exhaustive research on hinge designs and had to cooperate closely among its many hardware departments to come up with a blueprint for the hinge. The ability of the Z Flip to stand on its own thanks to the unique hinge was a result of Samsung wanting to add “a new layer of convenience to the user experience” to its new foldable.

Samsung also talks about how the Galaxy Z Flip is designed to offer a comfortable grip and how it “combined a smooth glass finish with precise processing” to make sure the phone would reflect a range of hues depending on the angle the screen is opened at, no matter which of the three beautiful and striking color variants the consumer decides to pick up (we here at SamMobile are really digging the Mirror Gold version, which is sadly going to be available in limited markets).

There are a few more bits and pieces of info about the Galaxy Z Flip design in Samsung’s Newsroom post, which you can check out here. As a reminder, the Galaxy Z Flip goes on sale in the US and South Korea today and is expected to come to more markets in the next couple of weeks.
