Galaxy Tab S7 FE debuts in India with pen flourishes and a study focus

The Galaxy Tab S7 FE is available for purchase in India starting this week, all according to plan. To announce the development, the company’s local branch debuted a video ad that’s all about pen flourishes, of all things. Though it also frames the Galaxy Tab S7 FE as the ideal study pal, which is a pretty believable claim.

Confused? Check out the video itself down below, it should clear things up a bit:

Get the official Keyboard Cover for the Galaxy Tab S7 FE at a discount

You are currently able to get your hands on the Galaxy Tab S7 FE starting at ₹46,999 – which equates to just under $480 – and that’s inclusive of all taxes, mind you. Samsung Gallery’s new video player sucks, but you can still use the old one

Samsung’s Gallery app gets new features from time to time, and Samsung also keeps changing how existing things work. Some of those changes make sense, but some of them just seem to come for the sake of change instead of actually making the experience better. One such change was how the Gallery app plays videos when you tap the play button.

In recent versions of Samsung Gallery, clicking the play button on a video doesn’t open them in a dedicated video player. Instead, the video just plays right there on the preview screen, with the option to enable sound by tapping the audio toggle at the bottom right of the screen. And while that in itself isn’t a major issue, the new style of playing videos makes it inconvenient when you want to move forwards or backwards, as you don’t get a proper progress bar when a video is playing.

But did you know that you don’t need to do it that way and there’s still the option to watch a gallery video in the good old dedicated video player that has been part of Samsung’s Galaxy devices for years? Yes, you can still do that, and it just takes a couple of extra taps: All you need to do is pick a video from the gallery, tap the More button (the one with the three vertical dots), and select Open in Video player.

The video below shows how that works. You’re welcome.

High refresh rate displays: How essential are they for you?

High refresh rate displays are all the rage these days. They’re seen on smartphones across all price points, with Samsung bringing 90Hz displays to devices costing as low as $140 and putting 120Hz screens on all of its flagships. A high refresh rate enables extremely smooth animations and scrolling across the user interface and enhances the gaming experience. It’s especially good for budget and mid-range phones as it makes them feel faster than they would with a standard 60Hz refresh rate.

As more and more Galaxy devices come out with high refresh rate panels, there will be a time when they become the new normal. But, here’s what we’re wondering: How interested are you in that happening? Do you think high refresh rate displays are an important feature for phones, or do you think they are overrated? Should Samsung be putting a 90Hz or 120Hz screen on every phone possible, or would you prefer the company leave it out on some devices to make sure those are priced right instead of sacrificing other features that you consider to be more essential?

We really want to know, so go ahead and vote in the poll below and take to the comments section to tell us your thoughts on the matter.

Samsung’s smart TVs get another certification for their accessibility features

Samsung, the world’s number one TV brand for 15 years in a row, has been focusing a lot on improving the accessibility features of its smart TVs. The company has already received multiple awards and certifications, thanks to extensive accessibility features on its TVs. Today, the South Korean firm’s TVs have received yet another accessibility certificate.

The company has announced that its smart TVs have received the ATECH certification from ONCE Foundation in Spain. The certificate has been awarded to multiple TVs in Samsung’s lineup: Neo QLED TV, 4K QLED TV, 8K QLED TV, The Frame, The Serif, The Sero, and The Terrace. It means that the company’s TVs are more accessible and easier to use for people who are completely blind or those who have limited vision or color blindness.

Samsung’s TVs, which have received the ATECH certificate, are easier to use for people who are completely or partially deaf, have moderate or severe difficulties using their hands, or those who cannot speak. These TVs come with accessibility features that allow users with limited vision, hearing, or movement to completely set up their TV without needing help from anyone else.

Smart TVs from the South Korean firm come with a complete and easy-to-use accessibility menu. They also offer audio descriptions and accessibility subtitles. They meet or even surpass the accessibility requirements set by ONCE Foundation and European standard EN 301 549.

Jesús Hernández, Director of Universal Accessibility and Innovation at the ONCE Foundation, said, “It is important for manufacturers to take into account the needs of people with disabilities in order to achieve equal opportunities and non-discrimination as well as offer such information clearly and transparently and that is our goal.

Galaxy Z Fold 3 Indian launch all but confirmed by BIS certification

Although the Galaxy Z Fold 3 still does not have a concrete release date, Samsung is already doling out samples of the foldable to partners. There’s even a China-only variant called the Galaxy W22 5G. Users looking to get their hands on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 in India will be pleased to know that they will be able to do so soon-ish. The foldable has just received BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) certification, indicating that Samsung has the Indian Government’s blessings to sell the Galaxy Z Fold 3 in the country.

While the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3’s predecessor —the Galaxy Z Fold 2— came with an eye-watering price tag, it sold relatively well in the few-odd markets that it was available in. This time around, it might actually be within the grasp of many consumers, as the Z Fold 3 could up to cost 20% less than the Galaxy Z Fold 2, meaning that one could theoretically get it for US$1,600. Now, that is still a considerable amount of money, but the high-end smartphone market has breached the US$1,500 mark already, so an extra US$100 doesn’t seem like much of a stretch, especially for a revolutionary piece of technology.

Based on what we know about the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 so far, the foldable will be the first-ever Samsung product to ship with an under-display selfie camera. Rumour has it that it will also be one of the first devices to run Qualcomm’s yet-to-be-released Snapdragon 888+ chipset. Its hardware prowess notwithstanding, Samsung seems to have a lot of faith in the foldable, as it is reportedly churning out as many as 70,000 Galaxy Z Fold 3 units per day.

Galaxy J3 (2017) grabs the June 2021 security update

The entry-level Galaxy J3 (2017) has just grabbed the June 2021 security update. Identified by PDA version J330FNXXS4CUF1, Samsung’s latest firmware release has been spotted in Ireland, where it started deploying less than a day ago. The June 2021 security update has been rolling out worldwide for nearly a month by now, reaching 187 other device models in the process.

There’s no telling exactly how long will this update take to fully deploy, but existing Galaxy J3 (2017) owners are likely looking at days instead of weeks of waiting. And anyone looking to speed things up a bit can try doing just that by going to Settings Software update Download and install.

This patch is another reminder of why Samsung remains the king of Android security

Alternatively, our firmware archive already has full system images containing the latest security patch level for the Galaxy J3 (2017), should you want to download and flash the update manually. Either way, this particular release once again illustrates why Samsung remains the king of mobile security, at least in the Android space; the Galaxy J3 (2017) is near-ancient in terms of tech but has continued to receive regular updates long after its rivals have been forgotten by other manufacturers.

Granted, don’t expect this to go on for much longer but if this was a sub-$200 device from any other brand, its owners would have been left with outdated software vulnerable to well-documented exploits years ago. And yet here we are, four years later, reporting on security releases that are even reaching retirement homes, so to speak.

Samsung and AMD’s lovefest won’t be exclusive to Galaxy phones

A lot of hype is building around Samsung’s next-generation flagship Exynos processor. And that’s primarily because it will be the first smartphone chipset in recent times to feature an AMD GPU. Everyone is excited to see how well the chipset does when it ships inside a Galaxy smartphone next year. However, the Exynos 2200 might not be limited to just Samsung’s own smartphones.

According to a new rumor floating around on the Chinese microblogging website Weibo, the Exynos 2200 processor could end up inside a high-end smartphone from Vivo. And that’s entirely possible as the Chinese smartphone brand has used flagship Exynos processors in the past in its high-end devices like the Vivo X60 and the Vivo X60 Pro. However, those devices were limited to the Chinese market. International variants of the Vivo X60 and the Vivo X60 Pro used the Snapdragon 870 instead.

It was also rumored that System LSI (Samsung’s arm that designs Exynos SoCs) was in talks with more Chinese smartphone brands, including OPPO and Xiaomi. If Samsung hopes to put its next Exynos processor into more non-Samsung phones, it needs to release a killer chipset that’s not only feature-rich and powerful but also power-efficient.

The Exynos 2200 is expected to feature one ARM Cortex-X2 CPU core, three Cortex-A710 CPU cores, and four Cortex-A510 CPU cores. It will most probably be manufactured by Samsung Foundry using its 5nm fabrication process. The AMD GPU used inside the Exynos 2200 will be based on the company’s latest architecture: RDNA2. AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su had announced that the GPU features advanced technologies such as ray tracing and variable rate shading.

Final big Galaxy A50 Android update hitting unlocked units in the USA

North American carriers have made considerable progress in how quickly they roll out new software updates for Galaxy devices compared to the rest of the world, but there’s still room for improvement when it comes to updates for unlocked variants of Samsung’s phones and tablets. Case in point: Unlocked units of the Galaxy A50 are only just making the jump to Android 11 in the US, two months after the carrier variants and nearly four months after international models were first updated.

But the good news is that those who own an unlocked Galaxy A50 can finally grab what will be the last big update for their phones. That’s right: Android 11 is it for Samsung’s popular 2019 mid-range phone, as it doesn’t make the cut for Samsung’s industry-defining software update policy that was announced last year. Still, it’s been a good run for the A50, and it will possibly get the One UI 3.5 update somewhere down the line before Samsung starts limiting it to just security updates.

For those wondering, the Android 11 update includes One UI 3.1, and it also bundles the June 2021 security patch. It should be available over the air right now, and you can try downloading it from the phone’s Settings » Software update menu. The Android 11 firmware is also available in our archive and can be used for manually upgrading to the latest software (version A505U1UEUCDUF1) using a Windows PC.

Custom Samsung app giving BMX TeamNL a shot at Olympic glory

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics couldn’t take place last year due to the pandemic. It was decided to postpone the event by one year. So even though the games are taking place from July 23 to August 8, 2021, they’re still being conducted as the Tokyo 2020 games.

National teams from across the globe will be participating in a variety of events. Everyone wants to win Olympic gold but it’s easier said than done. Athletes need to be at the very top of their game if they want to achieve glory. BMX TeamNL (Netherlands) knows that and it’s found a partner in Samsung that’s empowering them through technology to become even better.

Samsung helping BMX TeamNL in its quest for Olympic gold

BMX or bicycle motocross is a popular extreme sport across the globe. The craze began in the early 1970s, initially only in the US, but it swept the globe in the decades to come. The biggest testament to its popularity is that BMX was made a full medal Olympic sport by the International Olympic Committee in 2003.

Strength and technique are crucial for winning at BMX 70% of the races are decided by the start. A perfect start is vital to the team’s chances of winning gold as it pretty much guarantees that the athlete will be ahead and stay ahead of the pack.

TeamNL’s athletes Niek Kimman and Judy Baauw say that a perfect start relies on power, reaction speed and how high the front feel is lifted up. Minimal differences in these can make or break the race and these differences are tough to spot with the naked eye. So the team turned to Samsung and the company developed a custom app to help their chances at Olympic glory.

The Samsung FastFrame app developed for TeamNL athletes enables the coach to see in real-time through integrated technology what makes a perfect start. The team can then understand whether it was the power or reaction time that needs improvement. The app makes it easy to see these super small details that will make all the difference when the team competes in Tokyo.

Samsung has long been a partner of the Olympic Games. The company also launches a special edition of its flagship phone to commemorate the games. So while you can’t get the FastFrame app, you can try and get your hands on the Galaxy S21 Olympic Edition.

Samsung is the world’s fastest growing 5G smartphone vendor

Samsung was pretty quick to put 5G smartphones on the market. The company kicked things off with the Galaxy S10 5G. It declared 2020 the year of 5G for its smartphones as the next-gen network support was expanded to more devices.

The strategy appears to be paying dividends for the company. Samsung was the fastest growing 5G smartphone vendor in the first quarter of this year.

Samsung’s 5G strategy is paying off

Samsung initially provided 5G support on its flagship devices. It later trickled down to the mid-range Galaxy A and even entry-level Galaxy M devices. Samsung offers 5G smartphones in just about every price range now. Some models are even available in countries where 5G networks have yet to go live.

The latest research from Strategy Analytics shows that global 5G smartphone shipments grew by 6% in the first quarter of 2021.

Demand for 5G smartphones remains very strong in the United States, Western Europe and China. Samsung turned out to be the world’s fastest growing 5G smartphone vendor in Q1 2021. It shipped 17 million units during this period, this was a 79% increased compared to Q4 2020 in which it shipped 9.5 million units.

There’s no stopping Samsung’s incredible growth in the global 5G smartphone market. However, it still has a major portfolio gap in China. The company’s smartphone market share, 5G or otherwise, remains very low in the country. China is the world’s largest 5G market so it represents a huge opportunity for the company.

As we exclusively reported yesterday, Samsung will soon release a new 5G smartphone in China. It’s going to be a unique model of the Galaxy Z Fold 3. Whether or not that helps increase its market share in the country remains to be seen.

Android 11 update for the Galaxy A01 starts rolling out in the US

Samsung had released the Android 11 update to the international unlocked variants of the Galaxy A01 two months ago. The carrier variants in the US were not that lucky, though. Samsung has now started rolling out the Android 11 update to the Galaxy A01 in the US, starting with AT&T and Verizon.

The Galaxy A01 on AT&T and Verizon’s network in the US has started getting the Android 11-based One UI 3.1 update. The new software bears firmware version A015AUCU4BUE3 on AT&T’s network and A015VVRU4BUE4 on Verizon’s network. It also includes the May 2021 security patch. As per the official changelog published on Verizon’s website, the latest update brings chat bubbles, conversations section in the notifications area, one-time permissions, auto permissions reset, and more to the smartphone.

The new software should also include a refreshed UI design, improved privacy and security features, more lockscreen widgets, more accessible smart home device controls, and redesigned Device Care menu. Other features include improved Digital Wellbeing and parental controls and the ability to remove GPS location data from images. All the stock Samsung apps, including Samsung Internet and Samsung Keyboard, have received improvements as well.

If you are a Galaxy A01 user on AT&T or Verizon’s network in the US, you can check for the update manually by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install. The update might come to other networks over the next few days. The smartphone was launched in the US in early 2020 with Android 10 onboard.

Galaxy S22 camera specs reveal a positive change in Samsung’s strategy

Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy S22 sometime in Q1 2022, and some of its specifications have already been revealed over the past few weeks. However, this is the first time that we are getting to know the Galaxy S22’s camera specifications. While the vanilla and plus models of the Galaxy S21 series saw no real improvements over the Galaxy S20, we might see a significant camera upgrade with the Galaxy S22.

Galaxy S22 camera specs (leaked)

According to the information revealed by tipster @FrontTron, the Galaxy S22 (and the Galaxy S22+) might feature a triple-camera setup, featuring a 50MP primary camera sensor, a 12MP ultrawide camera, and a 12MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom.

If this information is correct, Samsung might not be running after higher numbers just for the same of marketing, and it might offer practical improvements. However, the tweet also cautions us to take the information with a pinch of salt. No information has been revealed regarding the camera sensors’ model numbers and whether the Galaxy S22 uses Samsung’s ISOCELL sensors or Sony’s IMX sensors.

The Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, Galaxy S21, and the Galaxy S21+ featured a 12MP (1/1.76-inch) primary camera, a 12MP ultrawide camera, and a 64MP telephoto camera (with cropping for 3x digital zoom). Although they all offered really good image quality, there was nothing spectacular about them. With the Galaxy S22, the company might use a larger (1/1.28-inch or 1/1.12-inch), 50MP sensor for brighter and sharper images, thanks to larger pixel size in both native (1.4μm) and 4-in-1 binning (2.8μm) modes. The new sensor should also offer brighter 4K videos in low-lighting conditions and 8K videos.

Replacing the Galaxy S21’s 64MP camera with a 12MP sensor and a proper telephoto lens should offer greater details at native zoom levels. There is still no information regarding the front-facing camera’s sensor size or resolution. While it was rumored earlier that Samsung might go with an under-display selfie camera for the Galaxy S22, it was later revealed that the South Korean firm has shelved those plans due to unsatisfactory image quality.
