Galaxy Tab 5 8.0 (SM-T377A) headed for AT&T passes through FCC

It appears as though Samsung is preparing to add one more Galaxy Tab to its growing series (one of the Galaxy Tab 5 models), as a new tablet bearing the model number SM-T377A just passed through the FCC three days ago. The new Galaxy Tab is headed for US carrier AT&T.

This Galaxy Tab will utilize both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz Wi-Fi bands, run 802.11a/b/g/n, and will also support the FDD-LTE 2300 (B30) Mhz band for the first time (one of AT&T’s LTE bands). The model number, SM-T377A (close to the Tab 4 model number SM-T331) implies that this tablet could be the new Galaxy Tab 5 8.0 rather than the 10-inch Galaxy Tab 5 that bears the model number SM-T555. The source confirmed this summer that the Galaxy S6 edge+ would support Band 30 out of the box as well, and the regular Galaxy S6 and S6 edge also support Band 30 on AT&T’s network. Rumors say that the Galaxy Tab 5 7.0 (model number SM-T239)  has been tested in India and could be on its way as well.

There’s little to see at this point, but with Samsung’s Galaxy Tab A having a 4:3 aspect ratio, it’s likely that the Galaxy Tab 5 (all models) will support the same aspect ratio as well. At this point, only time will tell the nature of this new tablet, so stay tuned.

Samsung Z3 LTE model (SM-Z300F) receives Bluetooth certification

In case you haven’t heard, Samsung is moving forward with its homegrown operating system. Skipping a Z2, Samsung is soon to bring the Z3 to market as its second-generation Tizen-powered smartphone. The latest information we have concerns the Samsung Z3 and Bluetooth certification after the Z3 received FCC certification.

Bluetooth 4.1, the latest Bluetooth update, is on board with the upcoming smartphone that bears the model number SM-Z300F, but the Bluetooth certification also presents us with some other news: the Samsung Z3 will run Tizen 3.0, not Tizen 2.0 as some have reported in the past. Other specs include a 5-inch, HD display with 1280 x 720p screen resolution, a 1.3Ghz, quad-core Spreadtrum processor, 1.5GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, a 5MP front camera, 8AMP back camera, 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi (no 802.11ac), 4G LTE, dual-SIM slots, and a 2,600mAh battery – just as we said earlier.

Lastly, the Z3 will have Gear S2 support, so Z3 buyers may want to consider picking up Samsung’s upcoming smartphone and smartwatch, all in one swoop.

Samsung announces Galaxy Active neo in Japan

Samsung’s Galaxy S6 Active in the US is an excellent water-resistant smartphone with the kind of durability that sets it apart in the smartphone market, but its AT&T exclusivity in the US limits what would be otherwise a world favorite. Fortunately, Japanese Samsung customers can rejoice, since the S6 Active gets something of a younger “sibling” in the country.

Samsung Japan has taken the wraps off its new Galaxy Active neo, a smartphone that is similar to the S6 Active but features a 4.5-inch, LCD screen with an 800 x 480p resolution as opposed to the 5.1-inch, Super AMOLED display with a Quad HD resolution of 2,560 x 1,440p found on the S6 Active.

It would be easy to assume that the Galaxy Active neo is the same as the AT&T Galaxy S6 Active, just smaller, but that’s not entirely true. While the display and physical touch buttons match those of the Galaxy S6 Active, Samsung has done some small redesign with the Galaxy Active neo: the Active neo still retains the volume rocker and Active key that are found in the S6 Active, but the new keys have more of a square look as opposed to the round appearance on the S6 Active. As for the back of the device, Samsung has removed the four bolts that are at the four corners and expanded the camo print so that the back of the device sports the camo print from corner to corner.

As for the camera, LED flash, and speaker, Samsung has made some small revision to these as well. The speaker, located at the bottom back corner of the S6 Active, now sits to the right of the camera on the Galaxy Active neo and has a circular, “two-halves” shape instead of the “two stripes” appearance in the S6 Active. The camera, with its square metal ring in the S6 Active, is now round and has a round metal ring instead of the square metal ring with round corners found on the S6 Active. The Galaxy Active neo doesn’t appear to have a heart rate monitor, but the LED flash, round in shape on the S6 Active, now has a circular shape.

The Galaxy Active neo features a quad-core, Snapdragon 410 processor, 2MP front camera, 8MP back camera, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage with a microSD card slot for expandability, and a 2,200mAh battery with 4G connectivity.

Samsung has also added to its ever-popular Ultra Power Saving Mode, allowing users to have a color display with the apps users choose to use in Samsung’s most power-conserving mode.

The Galaxy Active neo will run Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box, comes in Solid Black and Camo White, and will cost 20,000 Yen, or $166 USD.

Samsung’s first monitor with a built-in wireless charger now available for pre-order

A couple of months back we reported that Samsung would soon unveil its first monitor that features a built-in wireless charger, the company did unveil one back then, it claims that the 23.6-inch SE370 is the world’s first monitor to come with an integrated wireless charging feature for compatible mobile devices. After showing it off a few months back Samsung has now started taking pre-orders for this monitor with shipments starting in the near future.

The circular wireless charging area is integrated in the monitor’s stand, users just have to place the mobile device in that area to start charging, status is confirmed by a LED light. Obviously it’s of no use to someone who doesn’t have a smartphone that supports wireless charging, like smartphones from a certain company named after a fruit, but then again they’re not going to be the ones buying the SE370. It does provide a way to declutter the workspace for those who have wireless charging supported handsets, they no longer need to fumble with wires or chargers when they can just as easily juice up the device by placing it on the monitor’s stand. All of Samsung’s recent high-end devices come with integrated wireless charging so it makes perfect sense for the company to launch this monitor which can now be pre-ordered through Newegg for $249.99.

Official Gear S2 unboxing video arrives

The Gear S2 goes on sale in the United States, Germany, Singapore and South Korea today while pre-orders are already live in Canada with shipments starting in a couple of weeks. Yesterday we did see some images of the retail packaging of the Gear S2 but now Samsung has treated us to the official Gear S2 unboxing video, it’s a short video which perfectly summarizes what you’ll get inside the box.

Lift the lid and be greeted by the Gear S2 smartwatch, be it the normal version or the much dressier Gear S2 Classic. Put that to the side and you get the quick start guide, extra bands, a charge and a dock. That’s all there is inside the box, if you’re looking for instructions on how to get the smartwatch up and running, Samsung has already published video tutorials for the Gear S2. The Gear S2 works with all Android smartphones running Android 4.4 Kitkat or higher, however you’ll have access to more features like Samsung Pay if you use the smartwatch with a Galaxy smartphone.
